PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
We are drawing to the end of a tumultuous term.
We started with the expectation that we would
be learning from home for a significant time, to
then return to school at beginning of Term 2.
Thank you to the whole school community for
helping the process go quite smoothly. Staff
members for their planning and communications,
students for developing independence and
digital skills and families for responding quickly to
requests and supporting the school and students.
We are heading for normalcy but need to be
mindful of maintaining protocols to minimize risk.
As restrictions ease the library will open to the
public in the holidays (see below) and these hours
will continue in Term 3. We will be able to resume
assemblies in Term 3, some excursions and formal
planning, including the Junior School Camp at
Arbury Park in Term 3 (see article).
Sport: SYP principals discussed sport for term
3 and agreed:
The Year 8/9 carnivals (netball and
football) will be rescheduled to Term 3.
One year 6/7 carnival will be rescheduled
to Term 3.
The interschool sports days will not be
rescheduled however, the Track and Field
Country Championships will be held in
Adelaide in Term 4. Students will be
selected from School Sports Day results.
School Surfing – Friday 31st July will go
ahead as scheduled but as a round not a
team event.
The Student Led Conferences were held last week and students relished the opportunity to share
their learning with family members and teachers. I sat in with some of the conferences and was
impressed with how students articulated their learning, showed passion and could reflect on the
next steps in their learning. We had 96% attendance with a few conferences rescheduled to
accommodate parents. Families have been sent an email with a survey link to provide us with
feedback. This will be open until early next week.
Congratulations to Taylor and Kaelah who have produced the “Using digital technologies for
learning and teaching” policy (included in this newsletter). They worked with student leaders,
staff and Governing Council to produce a contemporary policy reflecting upon how the many
aspects the digital sphere interacts with schools. The policy reflects that technologies are part of
our working lives and we all need to learn to use them responsibly. Now we are using Office 365,
students sign the “ICT agreement” which has some of the nitty gritty detail. We will hold these
agreements on file and they will only need to be completed once. The documents are on the
school website in the “Documents/permissions” section.
With all of the change, restrictions and precautions we have been rethinking Presentation Night.
We would like to keep it flexible so we can adapt to any circumstances. We are pleased to
announce that the event will be held at the school with two distinct sections (Junior and
Secondary) with light dinner options. It will be held in the new COLA (covered outdoor learning
area) or outside if the COLA is not complete. In the event of inclement weather we will use the
gym. We are keen to given it a “picnic” atmosphere. Parents and Friends will be involved in the
planning and we are excited to refresh the event. The committee are in the initial planning
stages and more information will be provided next term. Given the difficult times our local
businesses have faced we are also changing the approach to sponsorship and our sponsors will
receive information about this next term. We will celebrate our stars under the stars!
Congratulations to the Year 12 students who have completed their Research Project, a milestone
in Year 12. They can now focus on their full year subjects – the end is in sight!
On behalf of our staff we wish our students and families a relaxed and refreshing holiday break.
We look forward to a productive Term 3.

What a year for the inaugural running of Adelaide University’s Shark Tank program at Yorketown
and Ardrossan Area Schools. Each Wednesday for the last semester students across both sites
have been collaborating face-to-face to identify and develop a business idea. Students used
online collaborative skills to communicate between these sessions, a timely ability to master
during these interesting times of COVID-19. Students pitched their final business model on
Wednesday 17 June at Ardrossan. Madison Hughes and Jacinta Fry’s team had the idea of
developing a time management app that never allows you to miss a commitment, Sally Page’s
team re-invented the school locker for better personal organization, Lucy Warren and Jess Ayu’s
team developed an app that supports mental health management within schools, and Orlando
Warren-Smith and Ellen Lombladt’s team crafted an online learning platform for high school
students. Explanations of customer segments, distribution channels and revenue streams were all
part of the final pitch, including the all-important ‘ask for investment’. Would you pay $100,000 for
15% ownership of any of these business ventures? All students did a great job with Lucy Warren’s
team progressing to the state semi-final, requiring them to re-pitch a condensed version of their
business model to a panel of business industry judges on Monday 22 June. We’ll await the results.
Students who successfully completed all of their assessments and submitted them to Adelaide
University will receive university credits for their efforts. Completion of the program also grains
important SACE credits as it was aligned to SACE Stage 1 Business Innovation.
“The program was not what I expected. The language was different and navigating the course
material was at times challenging.” Sally Page
We as teachers had to continuously collaborate and share ideas to understand this new
program and develop different ways of delivering learning. I would like to thank my colleague
Cherie Beech at Ardrossan Area School for navigating this journey with me.

JUNIOR SCHOOL
JUNIOR SCHOOL
In the R-2 classroom, we have been learning about information reports. We have read some
wonderful facts about platypuses, wombats and koalas. Here are some facts about koalas
which are native to Australia.
Anika – They have sensitive noses.
Zelda – They have sharp claws.
Levi – Koalas drink out of leaves.
Laeken – Koalas can climb very well.
Tony – Koalas live in trees.
Tyler MP – The babies are called joeys. The babies go out hunting for their food.
Deisel – They have strong senses.
Sebastian – When they are one, they leave their homes.
Michael – They have two thumbs.
DJ – They leave their homes when they are 1 year old.
Kodi – They eat leaves.
Wyley – Koalas have sharp claws to protect themselves from predators.
Kai – Newborn koalas are the size of a jelly bean.
Sienna – They eat at night.
Mackenzie – They are slow.
Olivia – Koalas live in Australia.
Theo – Koalas eat eucalyptus leaves in the night.
Jack – They have strong legs.
The 5/6s have been studying Historical
Recounts with Mrs Murdock and chose
a famous monument, explorer,
significant event, invention or famous
person to base their research on. They
are all pleased with their improvements
in research and structuring a recount,
and enjoyed sharing them with their
peers.
In Spanish the 5/6 class studied El Zoo. They made “En el Zoo” books and read them to
the R-2 class. The little kids loved the stories and some even could read along!
The 5/6s made an Adivina (Guess
Who?) about a zoo animal. Mrs
Murdock took them to Minlaton and
shared them with some of their
classes. They enjoyed working out
the different clues. We are looking
forward to reading some of their
finished books soon, too.
The 5/6 students studied The Titanic as a
historical fiction text. We compiled a
chart of our lost letters or diary entries
from survivors and also from those who
perished. We discussed who really was
responsible for sinking the boat – Was it
the captain who ignored 7 iceberg
warnings? Was it the ship builder who
used cheap and nasty rivets? Was it
Bruce Ismay (the managing director) who
pressured the captain to speed up? Or
was it Thomas Andrews’s fault for not
insisting the 16 watertight compartments
were not positioned higher. We had lots
of opinions!
Dale drew and painted an accurate
replica of The Titanic and created Fact
File about the ship and the voyage.
Junior School Camp
The Year 3-6 students will have the opportunity to go Arbury Park Outdoor School for camp this
year. The proposed dates are the 19th -21st August but this is dependent on the lifting of Covid 19
restrictions. Please watch for further information going home in Week 10.

WHOLE SCHOOL
Induction Ceremony
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we were unable to have our traditional induction ceremony. In
replacement of our ceremony a series of short videos that introduce our student leaders will be
produced and uploaded to the school Facebook page, so keep your eyes peeled!
PBL Article
In Term 3 the Middle School will officially start PBL. PBL is a Problem Based Learning subject that
Year 7, 8, and 9’s join together to do. The question they are answering this year is “How can our
community contribute to the protection and rights of animals?” Mr Talbot and the Year 9’s came
up with the question and subject during their STEM lessons, as the students requested last year
that they come up with what they are doing. Last year PBL was organised by the teachers, but
this year the Year 9’s are stepping up into the leadership role. Each group has one Year 9, one or
two Year 8’s, and a Year 7. The teachers organised the groups by their strengths and who they
thought would work well together. On Tuesday 23rd the students found out their groups, went
through the topic that the Year 9’s presented, looked deeper into their strengths, and discussed
group norms. Students are feeling ready for the new semester and are about curious what PBL
will bring them this year.
PARENTS AND FRIENDS NEWS………
Amy, our fabulous Canteen Manager, would like to extend a big thankyou to the YAS Parents
& Friends for the donation of new appliances to the canteen. With these new additions Amy
will be able to whip up her culinary delights even more efficiently, which makes her job a little
easier and our stomachs even happier and fuller. Thanks P & F!!
