“Tommy and Rosy” are two characters featured in a children’s educational EU

themed cartoon created by MEUSAC and financed by the European Commission.

It is completely dedicated to the young audience, providing an entertaining way to

communicate to children and at the same time teaching them in a simple way the

values and virtues of the European Union.

After the first and the second episodes, the cartoon has been developed to its

third edition, which is closely linked to the first two. In fact, the main characters

have grown into teenagers.

Tommy and Rosy were working as volunteers at the animal rescue centre in Episode

2. The third episode continues to build up on the previous episode with the image of a

neglected and weak horse that has now changed into an attractive and energetic one.

New characters have joined the old ones in Episode 3 such as, Peppi, whose role

is to encourage the children to take part in his project, an initiative focusing on the

key aspects of “sharing the common good” enshrined in the EU policies (social,

environmental, agricultural and educational) which are planned to be sustainable

and completely balanced.

Furthermore, an important role is represented by Tommy and Rosy’s mum who

encourages them to try and get some of their friends to join them when visiting

Peppi’s project.

The cartoon brings together the function of the EU with the forces of nature and

closely ties them throughout the episode. Obviously, the core message is that

the EU is igniting a process of change whose aim is to inspire people, of different

generations, to build a sustainable future, not just for themselves, but for future

nations and generations.

This project is financed by the European Commission – DG Communication and is one of the Operations of the Joint Communication Plan between the Government of Malta, the European Commission and the European Parliament.

Guys, this is Peppi, the mystery supplier of greens for the horses.

It’s fair trade; I get manure from the horses, which helps me convert surplus vegetables into high-quality compost!

Why don’t you sell these vegetables? They seem to be too good for just feeding to the animals.

Of course I do! See how she shines!

We can even touch her without being bitten!

Tommy & Rosy are interrupted by the sound of a roaring Land Rover.

You guys are welcome… anytime.

You should attend one of Peppi’s courses… he gets EU

funding. Encourage your parents to go along.

Peppi, would it be possible to see your

place? Joy told me about your farming ideas

and techniques.

Do you remember what Sky looked like when we first brought her here?

Peppi’s project gets funding from the EU.

It is open to people of all ages.

He seems like a great guy. You should see his old car…

funky hairstyle…

…crazy waistcoat & straw hat… so eighties Mum… an

old hippy wanabee just like you!

That’s enough of your cheek Tommy!

The conversation is interrupted by the phone ringing.

Tommy is ready to get his hands dirty… no need to research – it

sounds perfect to me!

Hi… the kids want to attend an EU course. It

takes place on a farm. I will look into it further and

let you know.

Sorry love! Got to go! Something has come up.

Let the kids do that course – maybe I’ll be able

to join them!

OK, I will. Stay safe… speak to you later!

Thanks Dad. Hold on… Mum is

right here. I miss you!

It’s Dad! Mum… it’s Dad on the phone!

The EU spends most of its budget on

farming & fishing. About €56 billion a year…

that’s amazing!

The EU ensures the veggies we eat are

healthy & the farmers can take care of their fields… that’s

what it’s all about.

Peace & Stability, Freedom, Security &

Justice, Jobs, Equality, Rights of the Child… to me

that’s progress!

Sustainable Development, Internal

Markets, Protection of the Environment, Balanced Growth… green things!

The EU pays for scientific & technical

research… teaching computer basics to developing new

energy sources!

I especially like that one – Solidarity between

Generations!

Tommy & Rosy decide to start the recruitment drive.

This is it Grandpa… I have turned over a new leaf… my big break into growing a better EU… a

better world!!

Tommy, Tommy, Tommy… calm down my boy.

I can see it now… converting solar & wind

power provides the electricity we need to power homes,

factories & cars!

And who knows… soon we will all be able to fly around in our very own anti-gravity machines!

I will be driving the tractor all day and resting by the fire side

at night… sleeping under the stars!

I remember Peppi… I would like to see what he

has done with the EU’s help. Tommy, you can put my

name down.

I will come with you!

It all fits in with my school project… where

money comes from and goes, and what the EU aims &

objectives are.

You are such a good example Violet!

You encourage social inclusion…

…and you protect our heritage & culture by singing

old Maltese songs.

Violet, you know more about vegetables than any of us… please

do come with us!

On the rig, an unsecured segment from the main drill cut itself loose from its stabilising ties. Falling

onto the deck, the segment causes havoc to equipment and men on deck.

Well… I will have to see how busy I am… you don’t want an old woman

holding you back.

I heard that they love to sing songs

at the farm.

Spread the butter equally across both sides

of the bread…

Gender equality… I love this idea.

25m high pressure hose with couplings checked

and secured.

Hi Joe… I popped by to tell you about this course

Tommy & I are attending… we want you to join us.

Sounds fantastic but I can’t make it. Jessica on

the other hand, is always keen to learn new skills… she

is a CPD diva!

CPD? What is CPD?

The EU funded course lasts for a

year and its value is over €12,000… we didn’t have to pay a cent!

Continuing Professional Development. We all need to keep on learning, no matter

the age or profession.

I learnt so much! It’s a great example

of the EU helping our government to sustain

our people’s skills.

Jessica recalls the presentation about ‘Sustainable Tourism’ which she gave as part of her course on Advance Tourism.

Tommy and Rosy arrive at the gate of the Nature Project farm. Peppi greets the children and

proceeds to take them on a farm tour.

This place is magic! It has such a nice feel!

Diversity leads to resilience…

it’s like a spider web.

Oh no… off she goes again… EU & diversity… I told

her she’s got it all wrong!

Rosy is right on the button.

The strands represent different countries.

The combination is strong. If a strand is damaged, the

others take the load.

Hi guys… this place is just so great!

Hey Peppi, you’ve grown a beard… does the EU

not supply razor blades?

The EU target for 2020 is to reduce poverty & decrease social exclusion…

growing their own prosperity is the key.

I love Malta & its people but I miss my family in Turkey. I look forward to the day that

Turkey joins the EU.

Contrary to my home country Albania, everyone

seems to be doing fine here… you do lack rain though!

Humanity can generate soil fertile enough to feed thousands of people.

You can even produce your own soil & compost.

Peppi takes the group to the composting toilet (humanure).

Some members of the group enter the hut to explore more.

I had doubts about Malta joining the EU, but it has made our country a

member of a larger, more united family.

Go on… I think you will be pleasantly

surprised!

It’s all about re-joining the natural cycle of life.

Investment requires a lot of money…

The light & warmth of the sun, through the use

of solar panels power Peppi’s house for free!

The EU’s investments in technology & research help us identify ways to reduce

carbon emissions.

You have got to be kidding… you want me

to smell this?

Saving water… no crazy chemicals… we start making soil.

Wow! What a lovely smell of soil just after the first rain of the season.

Malta has another target for 2020… 10% of our

energy must come from renewable sources.

Abram explains that each EU member country pools in

what money it can and then the EU re-distributes these to

where they are needed. These are known as funds.

Wake-up… wake-up you city folks…

time to get moving! No matter your age, 20 minutes of daily exercise

helps you to live healthier and without being a

burden to others.

In this way, plants are very similar to the solidarity

between the member states of the EU.

The answer is always about balance… giving &

taking… this is reflected in our economies, culture &

progress.

…they provide nitrogen in this case

and protection against insects in this case.

This little plant helps to keep pests away and so it actually protects the plants

around it.

This big tree could be Germany or France… the smaller plants like Malta or Cyprus are returning the

favour…

Malta is in the middle… so that makes us the

balancing point of Europe.

So this is what peace and well-being feels like!

Look around – we are like the United Nations

here tonight!

It can only happen when we have certain

freedoms & the security of life – water, soil & food for everybody.

We have to find new ways for everybody to have work they enjoy doing and allows them to progress

physically & socially.

We live in a dangerous time if we

continue to mess it up… but glorious if we get it right…

we’ve already started!

The tour has come to an end and the group is enjoying the last moments around the bonfire.

We believe in people… better levels of social justice… greater

equality between men & women, no matter their

race or age.

Peppi asks everyone to make a wish & say

it out loud.

Fairness!

Well-being!

Rain!

Clean water!

Respect!

No poverty!

Sustainability!

Clean seas!

Compost made from poo!

Justice!

Daddy!

This is the new age, for all ages, to change the world.

The protection of children’s rights is crucial.

The rights of children… to be well fed… to feel loved

& respected… that’s vital for kids!

Apple Swanan apple a day keeps the doctor awayAn apple is rich in calcium and phosphorus, with a juicy crunchy taste. With the help of your guardians, create an Apple Swan for a party with your friends to encourage them to eat fruit and vegetables.

ingredients1 large red apple¼ cup lemon juice

method1. Cut off a slice from one side

of the apple, about halfway between the core and the outer edge, to make a flat base.

2. Apply lemon juice to prevent it from getting discoloured. Keep aside.

3. With a small, sharp knife, cut out a small wedge from one side. Make two cuts on both sides of the wedge, about 1/8 of an inch away from the outer edge, and cut out another slice.

4. You have just cut a slice outside a slice. Repeat this process twice. Do not remove the slices,

but make sure that they are cut through. You now have four slices that telescope into each other.

5. Carefully ease out the slices. Apply lemon juice and telescope them back together again. Repeat the entire procedure on the other side of the apple. You have now made wings on both sides of the fruit.

6. From the first reserved slice, carve out the head and neck of a swan.

7. Place the apple flat on its base, and position the neck of the swan on the top towards the stem end (the broader side of the apple).

8. Now open out the telescoping slices half an inch apart and place them back in the spaces on either side to give a feather-like effect.

you’re ready!

The European AnthemIn 1972, the Council of Europe (the same body that designed the European flag) adopted Ludwig Van Beethoven’s final movement “Ode to Joy” melody, from the Ninth Symphony, composed in 1823, as its own anthem. The poem, written by Friedrich von Schiller in 1785, expresses his idealistic vision of a united human race.

The conductor Herbert Von Karajan was asked to write three instrumental arrangements – for solo piano, for wind instruments and for symphony

orchestra. The European anthem has no official lyrics, however,

in the universal language of music, this anthem expresses the same ideals of freedom, peace and solidarity, which are the pillars of Europe.

In 1985, it was adopted by European Union Heads of State or Government as the official anthem of the European Union, which

is played during official occasions by both organisations. It is not intended to replace the national anthems of the Member States but

rather to celebrate the values they all share and their unity in diversity.

Both the European Union and the Council of Europe refer to this anthem as the European Anthem, because it is the Council’s intention that it represents Europe as a whole.

the aim of the game is to be the first player to reach the end by moving across the board from bottom to top.

The first player to roll 6 can enter the board. Each subsequent player must also throw a 6 to enter the board. The dice must be rolled again to show the number of squares that the player entering the board may move initially. Place the marker (such as a coloured button) on the appropriate square. Each player may only roll once.

You each take a go. The person with the highest amount starts first. The person with the second highest goes second and so on.

Complete the game. The first player to reach the top is the winner but you must have the correct number on the dice to land on the last square.

rosy “So we looked it all up and I think it all makes so much sense. It all fits in with my school project on the EU; where the money comes from and goes to and just what the aims and of the EU are. You are such a good example Violet! You know about social inclusion and you are a protector of our and culture with all those old Maltese songs you sing so beautifully.”

violet “Oh Rosy… such youth, such ! You make it sound like I already have a spot waiting for me in Brussels. Hmmm… Brussels sprouts – never a big seller I am afraid, it’s the children… they don’t seem to appreciate them much.”

rosy “Violet, where do you get all your ? Why don’t you come with us for a few days and see this place with us? Please Violet, please!!!”

violet “Well I will have to see how busy I am. Besides, it sounds like something just for people – you don’t want an old woman holding you back.”

rosy “You! You of all ! You are the youngest-old person I know! Besides you know more about vegetables than any of us! You have got to come with us – oh… yes… mmm… I nearly forgot… I was told that they also love to a lot there you know!”
