It’s a ‘Dream Baker’s Dozen’ this year, as 13 toys are chosen by

the Toy Retailers Association(TRA) to make the toy industry’s official list of the top toys for Christmas.

With a nod to the past but with two feet firmly in the future

the list is a mix of old favourites brought right up to date, current

technology and a new crop of must-have character toys, say the TRA.

Some of the enduring favourites on the list have been around for over 50 years. Cabbage Patch Kids, Spiderman, Twister and Lego are sure to be toys that many adults have fond childhood memories of. They’re still loved just as much by children today, albeit in new evolutions of the originals. Contrast this with the high-tech tablets for kids and exciting new character toys inspired by TV and film and it’s safe to say that children will have a varied, imaginative and engaging Christmas this year.

There are some toys that hold an enduring place in the hearts of children for generations and this year we’ve seen the toy industry come up trumps by reinvigorating these classic favourites for 2012.

We also continue to see technology being woven into toys to add extra dimensions to the play experience – whether this is the use of apps, interactivity, touch screens or integrated multi-functions such as e-readers and cameras.

The top 13 in no particular order:

Cabbage Patch Kids Cabbage Patch Kids are back! Each Kid comes in one of 12 fashionalities and their own aspirational twist. Just like real kids like to dress up and play pretend, so do Cabbage Patch Kids! Each with their own unique look from facial expression, fashion personality, birth certificate including name and birth date & adoption papers. Adopt the Cabbage Patch Kid that you want to bring home to your family.

LeapPad2 The number 1 learning tablet just got better!LeapPad2 inspires kids to imagine and explore with a front-and-back camera and video recorder, 4GB built-in memory to story 10,000 photos, a built-in music player and microphone. You can even take your picture, record your voice and feature in your own cartoon, games and more.

Explore a library of 225+ LeapFrog Explorer cartridges and downloadable apps. LeapPad2 comes with 5 apps: Pet Pad, LeapFrog Learning Songs, Cartoon Director, Art Studio and one app of your choice.

FurbyTime to dust off your FURBISH dictionary because FURBY is back and ready to take the world by storm! Feed it, speak to it, tickle it, play music for it and shake, tilt or turn your FURBY upside down. But be warned - how you treat your FURBY will shape its personality! Are you ready to handle a FURBY?

We all know Christmas isn’t about the presents, but

spending time with the family. But...When it comes to select the best Christmas gifts, it’s important to bear in mind that the best Christmas

gift is as unique as the person receiving it.

A unique gift is the most memorable demonstration of intimate personal connection. When you walk out to search the perfect greeting card and Christmas gift, please do keep the recipient’s interests and needs in heart.

How to choose Christmas gift for loved Husband or Boyfriend? Purchasing present for men is definitely quite challenging. If you’re aiming to figuring out what’s the most wanted thing of a man, it’s always right to detect his hobbies and individual passions. If your beloved guy is a celebrity fan, so

try to secure two tickets and watch the celebrity’s performance with him. If your man is a humorous one, maybe a funny joke or amusing item which can make him laughs is enough.

How to select Christmas gift for your wife or girlfriend? As for presents for women, the most desired gift is often related to jewelry, but thats not always the right choice. If her work or daily life is a little stressful, perhaps a leisure spa or relaxing party is more suitable. Some nice clothes or shoes are always an appriciated gift choice, but you must be clear about her proper size and personal dressing style.

How to pick out proper gifts for dad? Selecting a gift for dad is a little different from choosing gift for husband or boyfriend. Also you can start from daddy’s specific hobby or interests. Maybe a pair of new glasses, a fishing pole, or a useful tool will be a perfect

idea. All the dads usually like to recollect past life and big occasions, it may be good to choose some memorable photos or cherished keepsake for dad’s desk or photo album. Every dad is proud of his daughters and sons, so please do offer him a chance to show off.

How to select Christmas gift for mom? As Christmas comes with a pretty cold winter, something to keep warm (sweater, gloves, hat) is a nice choice; they’ll harvest a sense of warmth though in chilly winter. Besides, jewelry or quality cookware, Mum always knows how to appriciate selfmade presents by her kids. So get crafty this Christmas and create some nice presents for Mum.

How to hunt proper gifts for kids? You can start from your kids’ wishes what they wanted and chattered at ordinary times. Newest toys, updated electronics, kids are always curious about the newest and most funny things. Also plan to purchase some practical gifts such as clothes, educational items or crafts, are an ideal choice.

DonationAnother option would be to choose a prefered charity and to donate a part of the money you would normally spend on gifts and/or Christmas cards. You could do this on your own initiative or at the office or even with the whole family. These days you can even adopt an animal in the name of a loved one.

But most of all ‘surprise’ loved onces with a thought, a touch or a few little words this will mean more than 1000’s of gifts. Merry Christmas!

The Christmas holidays can be a dream for some children or a

nightmare to others! When children are asked how they spent their holidays after they return to school in January, their responses are

interesting and can provide parents with food for thought.

Most children will go to parties, receive presents, enjoy family reunions, go on outings or enjoy other memorable activities. Many children will also remark that they were given a lot of handouts to do revision work. Some chuckled that these handouts kept them out of mischief!

What do children relish most during their Christmas holidays? Well they enjoy making things with their parents or loved ones! It is understandable that parents need time, patience, creativity and a sense of adventure!

This is where I come in! My pet subject is Mathematics and here are a few ideas I wish to share with you, ideas you could use during the holidays. My aim is to get children to think and work out solutions, estimate and work sums mentally fairly fast. I am going to suggest some holiday work with a difference …

Sorting out Christmas cardsFor this activity, you will need a lot of Christmas cards. If you do not have old ones, a cheap bumper box will do.Group the cards according to size, orientation or according to colour. Sort them into groups and depict the result as a graph, bar chart or a Venn diagram.

What to buy for Christmas? For this activity, you will need a few mail order catalogues.

Create two imaginary families and decide on the amount of money that is to be spent for each family. The families should consist of varying ages to promote discussion of relevant presents. Create two diverse families to help raise children’s awareness of difference between lifestyles. Calculators can be

used when calculating amounts spent and amounts left to spend.

Christmas Eve - Will the presents arrive on time? You will need maps of the Maltese districts (such maps can be easily downloaded from the internet).

You have ordered Christmas presents from various shops and are waiting for them to be delivered. How are they going to be delivered? What kind of vehicle will be used? What is the distance in kilometres? How long will each vehicle take to deliver the present/s to your home? If you had to collect the presents yourself, how much would fuel would you use and how much would this cost?

Wrap them up! You’ll need patterns for wrapping paper! (Surf the internet)

Calculate the size of paper you would need for each present. Will one sheet be enough? Figure out the smallest piece of paper that will completely wrap the gift. What pattern would you choose? How many geometrical shapes would it have? How many times is a shape repeated?

Wrap them up! (2)Create your own design. What shapes or pattern would you use? What colours would you want your wrapping paper to

be? Make a poster to show the shapes you have found in your wrapping papers.

More mathematics work using everyday situations!1. Make a list of 5 ways that a pizza

delivery driver uses maths in his or her job.

2. Make a list of ways the pizza can be filled and work out the ingredients needed.

3. Think which would be the most economical pizza and why.

Going creative! Creating a snowmanFor this activity, you will need coloured paper, tissue paper or cotton wool

Draw the shape of a snowman. Paint the background and whilst it dries estimate how many balls you would need to fill the snowman. Write this number down. Make the balls out of tissue paper or cotton balls and fill the snowman shape with these rolled balls. Count the rolled ball as you glue them. How close was your estimate to the number of actual rolled balls you stuck?

Creating a recycled snowman! Use materials found around the home.Recycle material you have around the house. What shapes will you use? How many shapes are you using? Estimate how long it will take you to complete the snowman from beginning to end.

Making patterns - who says Art and Math don’t mix?For this activity, you will need two different coloured papers.

Use the coloured papers, for example yellow and blue as can be seen in the picture. Draw a star and fold it so that you make one half yellow and one half blue. Decide on the size of the background and divide into two equal parts, making it half yellow and half blue. Glue half of the yellow star on the blue background and glue the blue half on the yellow background.

Now look closer. How many lines of symmetry can you see? How many shapes can you see? How many blue angles are there? What kind of angles can you see?

Organise a dream holidayYou will need: internet or globeSelect your preferred destination and discuss the following questions: How far away from Malta is it? What kind of

transport will you use? What speed will you be travelling at? What currency will you use? How much will it cost you? What other mathematical questions can you come up with using this topic?

CHRISTMASFive presents were bought for Christmas. The red present costs €25, find out how much the other presents cost.• The red and purple presents

together cost €43,• The purple and blue presents

together cost €24,• The blue and yellow presents

together cost €28,• The yellow and green presents

together cost €33,• The green and red presents together

cost €36,

What is the total cost of all five presents? Answer at end of page. Further fun math activities:Organise a walk with the members of the

family. Take pen and paper and notice how often you meet up with numbers: cars’ number plates, road signs, house numbers etc. Cook together! Find easy holiday recipes you could do together with your children. Read the recipe together and group all the ingredients and utensils required. Let the children weigh individual ingredients, stir and mix. Cooking together with your children is a rich experience for mathematics and learning new vocabulary but most of all it can be a fun and enjoyable family activity. Remember never to leave children unsupervised in the kitchen!

These are a few ideas you can choose from! I mm sure you can come up with loads more at no or little cost!

Answer: Purple= €18, blue = €6, yellow =€22, green =€11

There are few experiences as soul draining as going shopping with kids – particularly younger ones - tagging along. It doesn’t matter what you’re shopping for, children have an unerring ability to make your life miserable.

Their methods for achieving this are varied. It could be through constant whining that they’re bored. They can run all through the shop, dodging through people’s feet, touching everything possible and thoroughly embarrassing you in the process. Or by constantly whining that they’re bored. There is the all-time favourite of throwing a tantrum in the middle of the store. And did I mention constantly, incessantly, infuriatingly whining that they’re bored?

You’ve been there. No matter how angelic your kids are, you’ve been there.

Because I’ve been there and because I’ve seen enough red-faced parents dragging children out of shops to know that this is a staple of parenthood.

What’s truly amazing is that shops haven’t realised this and figured out that it is hurting them. You walk into a huge store selling mainly kids’ clothes and, amazingly, the only people that they haven’t catered for are kids! These stores employ people to design how their shops look but apparently these people don’t have kids themselves.

If they did there’s no doubt that they would section off at least part of the store, turning it into a small play area. It doesn’t have to be anything complex and I’m sure that some basic toys like building blocks would do. If need be assign one member of staff to look after the kids there. Whatever helps to keep the kids quiet and allow the parents to buy what they want in peace, then that works just fine.

The same goes for restaurants. It isn’t for the food that children clamour to go to fast food chains, it is because they get given toys with their food (consider this: you gladly pay more for less food!) and invariably they’ve got quite good playing areas. Surely that isn’t too difficult to figure out why they’re so successful in targeting families yet how many eateries do it? Practically none.

It could be the thought of screaming kids in the playing areas that holds these restaurants back but in truth it doesn’t have to be that complex. Given them some colouring papers and a cheap box of crayons and you’re likely to keep them busy (and quiet) enough to give their parents some time for a normal adult conversation.

Believe me, they’ll be grateful. And they’ll keep coming back.

Winter 2012 - Issue 2014

In the next couple of issues you will be reading a sequence of articles about Trusts which we hope will create better awareness of the concept, eliminate wrong perceptions and illustrate simple and

practical methods in using a Trust within the family context.

What is a Minor’s Trust? A minor’s trust is designed and tailored around the needs of our children. It enables us to protect our kids’ interests and allows us to save our Children’s funds gradually ensuring that they will be available for them when they need them. Minor’s trusts are available to all our Children this Christmas and not a privilege for the wealthy few.

So what is the purpose of the trust? The purpose of a minor’s trust is always the best interest of the child and seeks to protect the child’s funds for his or her use, more specifically for his or her education or health or support. How do I set up a Trust? The process is simple, you may contact a trustee who will provide you with the service and a standard minor’s trust document. Once you have had time to read and understand the document you need only put a few Euros into the trust to begin with. Your child’s Christmas present this year could be the founding slab of his or her trust.

Is it a complicated document? The Trust document is written in simple

terms, which makes it easy for us all to understand and apply. The document contains simple details of your child as the sole beneficiary of the funds in trust and outlines the purpose of the trust.

Are Minor’s trusts expensive? They shouldn’t be. A simple standard trust for your child should not cost more than €120 a year.

Are Trusts Confidential? Most certainly. All details including the names of the minor beneficiary and the amounts held in trust are held in full confidence. Trusts are not public documents, they are private arrangements known only to the parents and the trustee.

Even the minor may be kept unaware of its existence until the parents wish otherwise.

Can we add money or property annually?Yes. A minor’s trust will typically receive monies annually usually around the birthday, Christmas, graduations and other important moments in your child’s life. The process is simple and only requires a call or bank transfer to the trustee.

In conclusion, saving in Trust for your Child is a natural development and is complementary to simply saving. The Trust reinforces the discipline and culture of saving for your child’s future needs, assisting you in this exercise and making it less burdensome going forward. The Trust offers you that security against life’s unexpected events as it gives you the comfort that the efforts and sacrifices of savings for your child’s future is protected. Trusts for children are second nature to parents in the UK. This trend is finally breaking through in the local family culture as our generation of parents’ appreciate the concept of building their family estates in Trust, simply by starting with a Trust for their Child.

Trusts are a simple yet a powerful tool in managing and administering the family estate.

In the following scenario’s, a Trust assists you in solving family estate planning issues.

• To preserve family wealth and assets from spendthrift children. In situations where your child may not be sufficiently responsible with the family assets, the Trust will be used to hold and protect the assets for the benefit of your child who will not be the legal owner. The property will not be subject to creditor’s claims arising from the child’s actions. Furthermore the child will not be able to sell the assets , dispose of them or terminate the Trust.

• To protect from parents’ possible future creditor claims. When settled

in Trust, the assets are no longer legally owned by yourselves, and as such they are protected from liabilities which may arise in the future against you.

• To use and enjoy Assets settled in Trust may have a number of beneficiaries besides the child including yourselves. This means that although the asset is no longer legally owned by you, you will still be able to use and enjoy the benefits of the asset during your lifetime. This type of arrangement is commonly carried out with immovable property which although transferred in Trust is initially used by yourselves and only after your death is it transferred to your children.

• To manage the timing of tax liabilities When you settle immovable property into Trust for

the benefit of your children, the legal transfer crystallises all tax dues with respect to stamp duty at today’s rates and at today’s property values rather than at unknown future rate and value.

• To cater for unexpected events within families. A Trust formalizes and implements your’ wishes as parents on how and when to transfer the assets to your child, ensuring all is clear and certain. This is particularly relevant in case of sudden serious illness or accidents which you may suffer.

• To avoid property getting caught up in inheritance issues. In the event of death, the property settled in Trust for the benefit of the child, is effectively outside your patrimony and avoids all the issues and procedures arising on inheritance.

• Trust Origins The concept originates from the UK and it all started when knights left the country on the crusades. To protect and preserve their property they would transfer the legal ownership to a third party, such as a close friend, under an agreement that ownership would be transferred back to the knight upon his return or to his wife and children if he died. This transfer of legal title empowered the trustee to protect and manage the estate effectively and to enforce the rights of the estate against all parties while the knight was away but always kept the beneficial interest with the knight and his family.

• Trusts in MaltaTrusts in Malta are governed by the Trusts and Trustees Act (Cap.331 Laws of Malta) which created the framework that

enables residents and non-residents alike to set up various types of trusts in Malta. A Trust is administered by an Authorised

professional Trustee regulated by the Malta Financial Services Authority.

• A practical DefinitionA “trust” arises where ownership of property, in its various forms is transferred by a person, “the settlor” to another person, “the trustee” to be managed, administered and protected for the benefit of yet another person, “the beneficiary”. The property does not form a part of the trustee’s estate, it is a separate patrimony and it is not available to the trustee’s personal creditors, spouses or heirs.

Therefore beside the legal owner, the Trust context results also in a beneficial owner. It is the beneficial owner who effectively benefits from the fruits of the assets held in trust despite the assets are not being held in his name.

It takes lots of cotton bolls to make your average baby vest and lots of chemicals too. Out of the world’s total pesticide use, 25% is used to farm cotton. A very scary fact, but true. We all think cotton is one of the most natural things around. The truth is, its not anywhere near as natural as we would all like to think.Naturally Coloured Cotton does cost 30% more than normal cotton, but we at Natures Purest think it’s worth it. The skin is the body’s largest organ, incredibly porous and all those chemicals, from conventional cotton, pass straight into the bloodstream.

Looking after your baby’s new unprotected skin has never been so important. Looking after our world and our people is very important too. That’s why our organically grown naturally coloured cotton is so special. No pesticides, no chemicals, no dyes. 100% Cotton, 100% True.

What is naturally coloured cotton? It grows naturally in three colours, cream, green and brown. We grow it without using any harmful pesticides and it is harvested by hand. We process the cotton without using harmful chemicals. We never dye our cotton – it starts as organic cotton and that’s how it stays!Soft, luxurious Natures Purest naturally coloured cotton products don’t just let your baby’s skin breathe easier. Made to the highest ethical labour standards, they also ensure your grandchildren and great grandchildren will breathe easier tomorrow.

What makes our naturally coloured cotton so special?Adding nothing is what makes our cotton so special! No dyes. No bleach. No chemical pesticides. No heavy metals. No formaldehyde. No chlorinated phenols. No chloro-organic carriers. No biologically active finishes. Just 100% Natural and Pure.

Some ChristmasTips for New Parents

The arrival of a new baby should be filled with joy, and the first Christmas that follows a baby’s birth is often quite a big event. We’ve put together the some tips to help facilitate this day as smoothly as possible.

Prepare for Conflicting AdviceThere are a few situations in life where everyone’s an expert, even if they’ve had no prior experience. One of them is parenting. It’s entirely likely that you’re going to receive all sorts of well-intentioned but entirely unsolicited parenting advice from relatives that you see only a few times a year. Some will naturally be more appropriate than others, so it’s best to have some sort of contingency plan about how to handle it.

Don’t Go OverboardGiven that it’s your child’s first Christmas, it will probably be quite tempting to go all out—an excess of gifts and decorations, alongside an extravagant family gathering. The baby is likely to fall asleep during proceedings, and they’re also not very likely to remember their first Christmas in the years to come!

Be Prepared for Nap Time and FeedingIt’s very, very unlikely that the baby will make it through the day without conking out at some point. Young children need lots of sleep, so make sure that you’ve set aside an area of the house for them to rest undisturbed.

Get Plenty of RestEasier said than done during the holiday season—and with a new baby, of course—but not entirely impossible either. Rest has some serious practical implications—if you’re not properly rested and overly stressed, the quality of your breast milk can be substantially reduced. So try to rest on time and …Enjoy Yourself!

Page 20: Growing Up in Malta - Winter 2012

Winter 2012 - Issue 2020

In the watery world of the womb, your baby was weightless and warm, he was comforted by the rhythm of your heartbeat and the gentle rocking motion of his “mother home” as his body was gently massaged by the

uterine wall and contained by the boundaries of your own body.

Now, from this dark warm world of muffled sounds, the newborn must get used to new sensations: air moving across his skin and into his lungs, lights, direct sounds,

smells and stillness.

By offering what I call ‘womb service’, you can help your baby adapt

to being ‘on the outside’. Womb service involves recreating the sensations your baby experienced while he was safely carried inside you. WarmthInside your body, your baby didn’t experience cool air blowing on his tiny body or entering his lungs and these new sensations can be quite disturbing. So, at first, warm the space where you are going to be with your baby (16–20˚C will be a comfortable room temperature for your baby), and take care not to have fans or air-conditioners blowing directly onto him in warmer weather. If you are popping him into a cradle to sleep, he will be more comfortable (and likely to sleep better) lying on sheets that have been warmed slightly. Take care not to overheat your baby, but you can warm his sheets slightly with a heat-pack before you place him into bed – test the sheets with your forearm to make sure they aren’t hot. WrappingJust as your newborn was tucked snugly inside your body, supported by the uterine wall, you can provide a sense of security by swaddling him – wrapping him firmly in a gauze or muslin sheet in

summer, or a soft shawl or bunny rug in winter. With his limbs tucked securely against his body, just as they were in the womb, this will help your baby feel safe as well as inhibiting the newborn reflex. Known as the ‘startle reflex’, this is a primitive survival response that produces spontaneous, jerky movements and can be disturbing for your baby, especially if his own flailing little arm unexpectedly hits him in the face! Wearing your babyInside your womb, your baby was lulled to sleep by your body movements as you went about your daily work. Now, the motion of being carried in a sling against your moving body and your comforting heartbeat, as he breathes the familiar scent of your body, will help your baby feel safe. This feeling of familiarity will reduce stress hormones and help your baby relax – and a more relaxed baby will sleep more easily. Wearing your baby may have a balancing effect on his irregular rhythms of waking and sleeping, and is also thought to help him regulate his developing nervous and hormonal system, promoting day waking and night sleeping. WaterHelp your baby recall his watery womb world by taking a bath together. Remember that in your womb, your baby

was confined, not floating all stretched out, and his womb world was gently bathed in filtered light. By dimming the lights or bathing by candlelight with your newborn, you will help her recall the safety of her womb world and you will be able to hold her close and support her as she gradually relaxes and ‘uncurls’ her limbs. Bathing together is especially helpful if bonding has been interrupted by early separation or a difficult birth or feeding experience. Womb soundsThe calming, repetitive sounds of traditional lullabies recall the ‘womb music’ your baby heard before birth (your heartbeat, and fluids whooshing through the placenta). Baby music that incorporates elements such as the rhythm of a heartbeat or ‘white noise’ has remarkable soothing effects, especially if played continuously through the night. Of course, your own singing voice or even a gentle, continuous ‘shushing’ sound is transportable ‘music’ that doesn’t rely on the availability of a CD player, and it will help induce calm and sleepiness.

and pampered to a Facial and Make-up at Beauty Haven and a wash and blow dry at Hair Haven. Nikki sent us a few words of thanks…

“I was nominated for a day of pampering therefore, quite hesitant to go, as I’m not one to pamper myself and find it very hard to relax. Saying that, I can truthfully say today has been a wonderful experience for me. Not only did they make me look and feel pretty, but they went out of their way to make me feel comfortable. This is something I will definitely find the time to do again, thanks to all the staff at Beauty- and Hair Haven!” Many thanks again. Nikki

We took so many pictures, had lots of fun and even some emotional moments. It was hard to choose which pictures to use. But I think all in all these images will paint a great picture of an amazing day and some great memories for all of us.

What better way to spend some fun quality time during the hols, creating this simple festive craft. To make this lovely pop-out Christmas tree, you can use materials you already have at home. You can also use crayons rather than paint. So snuggle up round a table and get your festive creativity going.

You will need:

• Two sheets of green construction paper. You may also use white paper or cardboard and paint or colour it green

• White craft glue or transparent tape

• Scissors (ask for adult assistance)

• Free choice of decorations: paint, sequins, markers, glitter glue, pom poms, stickers, finger or poster paint, whatever you have available.

Step 1. Place two sheets of construction paper together and fold in half the long way.

Step 2. Cut triangles from the open edges of the folded paper to create two trees when the paper is opened.

Step 3. Cut a slit along the center crease, halfway up one of the trees starting from the bottom. Do same with the other tree, but this time starting from the top.

Step 4. Place both trees on a flat surface and start decorating with any materials of your choice. Allow some time for drying if necessary, flip over to the other side and decorate as well.

Step 5. Once both sides are dry, gently bring both trees together by interlocking the two cuts made in.

Step 6. Fasten together with glue or transparent tape.

Typically, most people have fasted for up to 12 hours from the time of an evening meal to breakfast on the following day and, during that time, energy levels will have fallen.

Breakfast literally means ‘breaking the fast’ and is

recognised as the most important meal of the day. The first meal of

the day is crucial because it helps refuel the body and brain with energy and nutrients after a night’s sleep. In addition to this, the nutrients in breakfast cereals have been associated with a wide range of health benefits, from aiding digestion and weight management to reducing the risk of heart disease.

There are 3 good reasons to eat breakfast:

1. Breakfast is a good start Eating a nutritious breakfast helps supply nutrients after a night’s sleep.

2. Breakfast is nutritiousPeople who eat breakfast are more likely to meet their requirements for vitamins and minerals.

Often nutrients missed at breakfast are

not made up from meals consumed during the rest of the day.

3. Breakfast is socialEating breakfast is a great occasion for social interaction with family and friends, and a way of developing good eating habits that last a lifetime.

Nestlé Breakfast Cereals are a good breakfast option because they are generally:

• Made with whole grainWhole grains are important part of a balanced diet. Yet, evidence suggests that 9 out of 10 people do not reach Whole Grain recommendations. This is the reason why Nestlé breakfast cereals are made with Whole Grain. Not all ready-to-eat breakfast cereals are. We guarantee that each serving is made with at least 8g of Whole Grain – this is what the green banner at the top of each pack stands for.

• An important source of vitamins and minerals

Breakfast cereals provide many vitamins and minerals that are important for health, for example, they are a source of calcium even before adding milk.

In many countries, breakfast cereals are the primary source of certain vitamins and minerals.

• Eaten with milkBreakfast cereals make it more fun and enjoyable for kids to consume milk. Milk is an important part of a balanced diet through different life stages.

• A source of fibre and low in fatMany Nestlé breakfast cereals are low in fat and a source of fibre. Have a look at the nutritional information on pack and make an informed choice. Nestlé breakfast cereals make it easier to have a nutritious start to the day

Millions of families will be able to increase their intake of important nutrients in the morning as Nestlé improves some of its most popular breakfast cereals. Cereal Partners Worldwide (CPW), Nestlé’s 50/50 joint venture with General Mills, has committed to reducing the sugar content of 20 Nestlé breakfast cereal brands popular with children and teenagers to 9g or less per serving by the end of 2015.

The changes mean that Nestlé breakfast cereals will have a sugar reduction of up to 30% across brands including Nesquik and Honey Cheerios. The reductions in sugar will be made alongside other nutritional improvements. Specifically, whole grain will be the main ingredient in all the new recipes.

The amount of calcium per serving will be increased to at least 15% of the recommended daily allowance (RDA), which varies in different parts of the world. In the European Union, 15% of the RDA for calcium is 120mg. The sodium content will also be reduced to 135mg or less per serving.

No compromise on taste The announcement reflects CPW’s continuing efforts to make it easier for consumers to eat a nutritious breakfast without compromising on taste. Since 2003 the company has removed more than 9,000 tonnes of sugar and almost 900 tonnes of salt from its recipes, while adding more than 3.4 billion servings of whole grain.

Whole grain CPW aims to help consumers boost their intake of whole grain by providing a minimum of 8g per serving in the majority of Nestlé breakfast cereals. Although health authorities worldwide recommend that people should increase

their consumption of whole grain as an important part of a balanced diet, studies suggest that in some countries as many as nine out of ten still do not eat enough.

CPW were the first global breakfast cereals producer to add whole grain to their products and they have been steadily increasing the amount since 2003. Product improvement continues to provide consumers with essential nutrients while preserving the tastes they enjoy as part of CPW’s commitment to nutrition, health and wellness.

Nutrition labelling Consumers can find clear facts and figures about the ingredients and nutritional profile of all Nestlé breakfast cereals on every pack. Although CPW is reducing sugar in Nestlé breakfast cereals, their energy content will remain roughly the same. Sugar is being replaced with other ingredients, typically other

carbohydrates, which contain a similar amount of calories.

Inspire is a non-profit organisation that leads the way in providing therapeutic, education and leisure services to persons with disabilities in Malta and Gozo. Through close relations with parents, government and the business community we aim to reach out and assist those who are excluded; to give them choice and opportunity and to emphasize their human rights and equal access to independence, education, employment, leisure and an inclusive community.

As a parent of a child with special educational needs, you know that:

• You have a vital role in supporting your child’s education

• Your child’s needs should be considered in all aspects of his development

• Your views need to be taken into consideration and you are a valid member of any team working with your child

• You are entitled to access any advice or support available by professional and established entities.

• Your child is unique and has his /her strengths and weaknesses.

Inspire’s Learning Made Easy (LME) Programme within the department for intellectual disability opened its doors to its first students, two years ago with all of this in mind. The Programme offered both in Malta and Gozo caters for individuals who are diagnosed with difficulties or delays in learning.

“No two students, within the Programme are the same and services are offered to

students of different ages and abilities said Ms Rosette Gatt, Programme Manager for the department. “As the name suggests, the Programme offers a personalised, multi-sensory approach that is adapted to the age, ability and the individual’s way of learning. Activities are simplified and presented in a way that will challenge the student’s strengths, whilst targeting his / her weaknesses” continued Ms. Gatt.

Parents of children attending these services report that the Programme is also a support service for them, as it not only provides valuable learning to the child but also assists parents by offering guidance on what is best needed to help the child develop both physically and intellectually. The team at Inspire also provides points of reference should any medical, social or other problems be encountered.

Kevin, is a bubbly 5 year old boy with a winning smile. When he enters the room everyone stops to greet this energetic child. When Kevin started attending the Programme he could barely sit still and focused for a few minutes. Today he can sit for a one hour session and participates at all activities set. The sessions, which are held at Inspire’s premises, are also attended by his mother. At times, the Learning Support Assistant that supports him at the local kindergarten and works in liaison with his home educator is also present. All are happy with Kevin’s progress:-

“Kevin has been attending the Learning Made Easy Programme within Inspire, for the past 10 months. The Programme

offers an intensive one to one weekly Programme where all of his needs are being seen to. His tutor, Magda is very dedicated and gets on really well with him. She is a big support not only to him but also to us. From time to time his learning support assistant also joins in the session so that she can see what work is being carried out and how she can adapt these activities during the school hours. During these past months we were amazed at the progress Kevin has made. We are very happy with his overall progress and the quality of the service he is benefiting from at the Organization.”

Andrew has Down syndrome. Having attended the Foundation prior to going abroad for a couple of years, his parents sought Inspire’s help upon their return.

Andrew is a fast growing boy, who enjoys participating in activities that most boys of his age take part in. He enjoys his lessons and is a pleasure to teach and communicate with. This is what his parents had to say:

“The day our son was born we knew that we were going to face some challenges. It was no easy time. However, because we accepted the situation straight away we immediately sought help and support for him. Soon the initial feelings of fear of the unknown started to shed away and made moving on so much easier. We began to set high goals for Andrew as we could see abilities not disabilities

through the encouragement of the dedicated staff at Inspire. Today, nine years later, we can say that Inspire have been very instrumental in our son’s progress and development. He leads a fulfilled life thanks to Inspire instilling awareness about Down syndrome and inclusion. They helped him and us as a family in so many ways so that we can lead a normal life. This is due to the fact that Inspire sincerely cares and works closely with the child, their families, LSA and all those in the community who are involved in the life of a person with Down syndrome. We are now seeing Andrew flourish towards independence and his capabilities are beyond our wildest dreams. Thank You Inspire”.

Ana and her little brother Teo, both attend the LME. They are both being followed at home and are reported as doing very well. Both the children are wonderful to work with and the home environment is really helping them learn. It is very encouraging to see that both parents work very well with their children and support them in every way they can. The following is what they had to say:

‘Our two children, aged 2 1\2 and 4 years, have been participating in attending for the LME Programme for nearly two years now. The weekly sessions are of great benefit to both of them in that they are consistent and tailor-made for their very differing needs and moreover carried on in a positive attitude. My daughter, Ana, who has a motor disorder, looks forward to her ‘lesson’. She likes her tutor and works harder for her than for me. Every lesson she adds on to her knowledge and drinks up the praise. Her confidence in academic work has increased, and so has herself-esteem. My son, Teo, who has Down syndrome, found it very hard to understand and follow instruction. But thanks to a formal and structured approach, he can now follow his session. The emphasis on sight reading words increased his concentrating skills a lot. Each session ends with follow -up activities to do during the week. These exercises often give structure to our days; so we are busy working hard to get better……. and that is truly inspiring.’

Johann has Down syndrome and he is now 11 years of age. He has been attending the Learning Made Easy Programme for about 18 months now and his parents are very happy with his participation.

Johann’s parents report that ‘He gets on really well with his tutor and this helps him look forward to his sessions. During these sessions different things are targeted. Although a part of the session targets academics, other parts target motor, reasoning and independence skills. The joint visits between the tutor and coordinator combined with school visits and reviews are a big help as it ensures that progress is being monitored, targets adhered to, and discussions between everyone who is seeing my son are on-going. The Learning Made Easy Programme is offered to individuals on a weekly basis and it is up to the parent to choose, between a home or clinical environment. The length of the session also depends on

the individual’s needs and professionals might opt for an hour of intervention, slowly building up to the student’s ability to focus and participate meaningfully.

The Learning Made Easy Programme ensures that:• Teaching is specialized and skills-

based• Tutors working with the students are

supported by a team of professionals• On going physical and moral support

to the parents is offered• School visits take place, where

applicable• Specific researched resources are

used to help the student understand the learning intent.

• On going progress is monitored

The students’ ages within this Programme varies, from children who are diagnosed at birth such as those with Down syndrome, to students with other learning difficulties such as global developmental delay, syndromes or speech delay and who are attending any educational setting being the mainstream or a Resource Centre. Thus students can attend one of two Programmes

In the Learning Made Easy - Early Years Programme, home sessions are offered to support both the child and family. This support is offered by an

Early Intervention Educator working directly under the supervision of the Programme manager / coordinator, as well as a physiotherapist. The benefit of this Programme is also the backing of a therapeutic team when needed. Parents also have the opportunity to access other therapies offered by Inspire usually on a a pay per use basis, These services might include speech therapy, occupational therapy, mother and baby swimming clubs as well as the use of the multi-sensory theatres.

In the Learning Made Easy – Middle and Secondary Years Programme an individualized literacy and numeracy Programme, is offered. Students who benefit from this service participate in a variety of educational and independence

living activities. These activities are chosen together with the parents based on the students’ and families’ needs. Services can be carried out in the home or at Inspire’s premises, throughout the week from Monday to Saturday. Specialized approaches are used to help the student grasp concepts through activities that in the class environment, even with the support of an LSA, are difficult to implement. All students undergo a dynamic assessment that works alongside the requirements of the National Curriculum. It helps to identify the child’s level of functioning and specific needs and in turn enables the staff to map out the goals and helps them organize the lesson plans required.

Our mission is to make sure that that all children can succeed each at his / her, own pace and in a way that is easy for him to learn!

Have you seen it yet? Tinti - Malta’s latest innovation in kids bath time products? Tinti makes bath time so

much fun you will have no problem getting your kids in

the bath…the problem will be getting them out…

We all must have experienced it as parents at some point. The little one(s)needs to go in the bath, but refuses to budge. You’re getting desperate when everything else fails. Luckily now there is a solution to avoid bath time hassle! (I can all hear you sigh with relief!)

There is a lot of fun for kids with Tinti. The bath fun and toy products make bathing, personal care and washing in the bath water great fun and develop children’s creativity and senses. The concept is very simple; Tinti brings colour and fun to the water in any bath, shower or paddling pool. And while the kids enjoy playing with Tinti, parents can rest assure that the products are completely harmless for the sensitive skin, never contain preservatives or stain your child or bath, are dermatologically tested and paraben free.

The interaction of playing by having fun is responsible for the promotion of children’s curiosity, independence and last but by no means least the positive experience of washing and caring for themselves.

The Tinti range consists of: Bath water colours, Kneading Soap, Painting Soap, Crackling Bath, Magic Bath Balls, a Magic Wand and even a Volcano!

Besides fun in the bath, Tinti can also be used for educational experiments.

Here is an example: Tinti’s colour experimentWhat you will need• Tinti bath water colours in blue, red

and yellow• A bath tub or paddling pool in the

garden with sufficient water• Empty, non-returnable plastic bottles

or different sizes of transparent tumblers. Glass bottles can break

so be careful and use plastic bottles instead for this game. And after the game, simply recycle the bottles and protect the environment.

Here’s how to do it:The colours and different possibilities for mixing the colours are the focus in this experiment. First of all, fill all of the transparent containers and bottles with water. It is best to place half a tablet of each colour in each of the large plastic bottles and then mix them well with the water. Now the experiments can begin. Add a small splash of red water to a small splash of blue water: suddenly a new colour will appear and when you slowly stir it with your finger you will see blue and red veils of colour turn into a colour purple. And so it continues with the fun mixing experiments. What colour do you get from blue and yellow and from red and yellow? Try it out! Your friend the Tinti Octopus hopes that you will have lots of fun!

What children will learn from this experiment? With the Tinti colour experiment, little ones learn to distinguish and experience colours around them and also learn how exciting it can be to mix different colours. The blue and red colours make purple and blue and yellow make green.

You can find Tinti products at:All leading pharmacies and stationers. For Trade Enquiries please call: Tub4Fun on 9949 3774 or 9946 7733 or visit the website www.tub4fun.com

Maltese Board Books for Babies and Toddlers

Brand new on the market: a set of 4 board books in Maltese. Books in Maltese for the very young (from birth) are hard to come by, and parents often resort to English ones and translate on the fly. The situation has just become a bit easier, as Merlin Publishers have just published a cuddly set of padded board books, with touch-and-feel elements on each spread. The board books introduce young children to simple, basic vocabulary in Maltese, in four key subjects: animals, colours, transport, and fruit and vegetables. Focus is on key words, while at the same time introducing a few Maltese words for common objects that might otherwise just get referred to with their English equivalent. These books are perfect for babies and toddlers, but also for slightly older children who might not be Maltese-speaking at home and need a primer for basic vocabulary-building.The playful, colourful illustrations and the child-friendly format of the books, make them an ideal stocking-filler this Christmas.

We have two sets of books to give away. Send an email with “books” in the subject line to: [email protected]. Or complete the voucher and send it in before the 20th of Feb. 2013. Don’t forget your contact details!

Id-dinja tiegħi: L-annimali, Il-kuluri, It-trasport, Il-frott u l-ħaxix, are published by Merlin and available from all bookshops, or directly online (with free delivery to Malta and Gozo) from www.merlinpublishers.com
