Invitation
The global downstream industry is in a state of transition. The fall in oil prices, structural shifts in demand and supply trends, the evolving regulations on sulfur cap in marine bunker fuel, the continued expansion of the Asian economies, the possible repeal of the crude export ban in the US are just some of numerous industry trends that add risk to the business, challenges thus faced by the industry today are daunting. These trends will only accelerate going forward & greater changes will come over time thus calling for the industry's transformation.
This age of transformation and continuously shifting global marketplace, necessitates implementation of disruptive innovation technologies and strategies for the global downstream industry, dramatically shifting its focus towards a more nimble and efficient operating model to survive and ultimately thrive. That is easier said than done, to use innovation, the companies require not just big ideas but also key intelligence on the market trends, the big opportunities, the challenges ahead & future technologies etc. It also calls for self evaluation, global collaboration with strategic partners, modernization of their IT environment for migration to innovative
rd technologies like the 3 Platform & most importantly the timely adoption of these strategies & technologies to eventually make a difference.
Companies that successfully identify high-impact areas and develop transformative innovations & strategies under such conditions would make a difference, keep the lights on until the new dawn & ultimately emerge as the “Super-Refiners”.
Organised by The Energy & Climate Initiatives Society (ENCIS), the agenda for the Global Refining & Petrochemicals Congress 2017 (GRPC) is thus designed to help the national, regional & global industry deliberate, collaborate & demonstrate their understanding on what disruptive innovation & transformation means for them including an informative schedule of raising Global Standards and help them achieve overall excellence. Widely recognized as “The Definitive Forum” for the downstream industry, GRPC partakes with stakeholders across continents, promoting innovation & excellence to be incorporated at all levels.
It is thus with great pleasure that I, on behalf of the ENCIS Advisory Board, invite you to participate in the 2nd edition of The Global Refining & Petrochemicals Congress 2017, to be held on 25-26 May 2017 at Bombay Exhibition Center, Mumbai, India. Please join us in this worthy and exciting mission. Your participation is vital to achieving the goals of this conference and the transformation of the global downstream industry.
I look forward to welcoming you at The Global Refining & Petrochemicals Congress 2017 !!
Anand Kumar,Conference Chairman, GRPC 2017,Co-Chairman, Advisory Board, The Energy & Climate Initiatives Society (ENCIS) &Former Director (R&D), IOCL
The Indian Opportunity
Touted as the world's fastest growing economy, India's demand for oil is insatiable. The IMF's World Economic Outlook 2016 report states that India's growth is driven by private consumption, which has benefited from lower energy prices and higher incomes.
Over the past decade, India's crude oil imports have doubled to about 3.8 MMbpd, making it the third largest crude oil importer. Its consumption of petroleum products rose a massive 11 percent in 2015 to 183.5 MT. With exponential growths in the manufacturing & industrial sectors, India's oil demand is forecast to reach 6.6 MMbpd by 2030 & 10 MMbpd through 2040 making it the fastest growing crude customer in the world as per the IEA.
The Domestic demand for fuels is the catalyst for downstream capacity growth. As on date the country's 23 refineries have a total capacity of 4.6 MMbpd that's makes it the 2nd largest refiner in Asia & the 4th largest in the world. However considering the projected demand over the next decades, India's current excess capacity is very small. The country would thus need to add another 100 MT of refining capacity by 2030. Refineries in India, both in the private and public sectors, are therefore scaling up, investing in new technologies, creating world-class facilities & adhering to regulatory compliances, investing over USD 30 billion in next five years. A 1.2 MMbpd Greenfield refinery has also been announced by the government on the west coast at an investment of another USD 30 billion. The proposed project, will be completed in two phases, with two crude units totaling 40 million tons in the first phase and a third one in the second phase including petrochemical units.
The government proposes to set up at least three petroleum, chemical, and petrochemical investment regions (PCPIR) that will benefit the downstream sector. With the drop in oil prices, refiners in India are also filling up their petroleum reserves as a hedge against price volatility and supply disruptions. Oil storage capacity of 5.3 MMt is being built at three locations: Visakhapatnam (already operational), Mangalore, and Padur.
It is obvious that with the convergence of multiple factors and a conducive investment climate, India's downstream sector is on the brink of exponential growth, providing mega opportunities to strategic investors, technology licensors, service providers, equipment suppliers, and EPC contractors.
