The word grunge is believed to be a back formation from the US slang adjective grungy, which originated in about 1965 as a slang term for "dirty" or "filthy". One of the most important events in 1990s fashion was the rise of Grunge fashion in 1992. Grunge fashion was influenced by grunge music .

GRUNGE FASHION

The slouchy 1990s grunge style was born as a popular youth subculture back in 1991 with the appearance of the grunge rock brand Nirvana and their uber-successful album ‘Never-mind’. It’s safe to say that the new musical band became a real trendsetter both in the music and fashion industry, establishing a new genre in these worlds, which was meant to live forever.

Over the time the grunge style has undergone a number of changes, bringing the neo-grunge style characterized by nearly the same elements, only with a grown-up, polished look, the indie/ Hippie grunge style, which stands out with its romantic, vintage vibe, and the glam grunge look that is more feminine and luxurious.

The modern grunge style embodies sophistication and uptown aesthetics with less ripped jeans and more feminine, ethereal looks quite often interpreted in chiffon and organza.

The grunge mode of dress is not an easy style to maintain given its defining disinterest in all things remotely style-related. Still, elements of grunge have persevered through the years. Lots of teenagers living in the 90’s channelled their inner grunge goddess (or gods) with easy to wear pieces like, plaid, flannel, leggings heavy combat boots and dark gothic make up

The most recognisable elements of grunge fashion, is the plaid or flannel shirt. Back in time, plaid was often made into shirts, but nowadays with the modern twist, plaid is designed into skirts, pants, bags and even shoes. Plaid can be worn un-tucked or tied around the waist. It can also be layered over a t-shirt or dress.

RIPPED JEANS

Torn jeans frequently topped off grungy ensembles, indicating the general apathy associated with the movement.

Grunge has a way of making black leather look more effortless than tough, even with the studs that sometimes spattered cuffs and collars. This is about the easiest grunge element to incorporate into a modern look. The biker style jacket, for one, maybe the most versatile piece of outerwear. .

Grunge footwear typically consisted of combat boots. Dr. Martens were closely associated with this trend. Flat, clunky, rubber-bottomed lace-ups, which hit ankle-length, were cool, and they went with everything.

Makeup in the grunge style has little value. It’s either completely absent or uses dark shades. Grunge makeup doesn’t require eye-shadow mixtures or sparkles. They used to adopt natural, preferably with darker tones with bushy eyebrows and with bold touch to lips.

No grunge look worth its weight in hair oil would hold its own without an unkempt mass of dirty, stringy hair. Men and women alike hopped on the greasy hair bandwagon, abandoning showering in favour of a more in-your-face, anti-hygiene look.
