This publication is a compilation of vital information of the city’s demographic and socio-economiccharacteristics. It presents latest available information on population, individual and householdcharacteristics, housing and economic indicators. Momentarily, the 2007 Census of Population

data is available only up to the population count hence, other characteristics are not presented.

The coming out of this profile answers the growing demand of small area statistics in local levelparticularly at the barangay level in selected socio-economic and demographic variables usefulfor its planning and policy formulation. This is also useful in various researches, social or businessresearches that would be helpful in assessing the city’s progress.

Data came from published publications of the National Statistics Office and other secondarysources from the City Planning and Development Office-General Santos City.

Chapter 1OVERVIEW OF GENERAL SANTOS CITY

1.1 History

General Santos City was formerly called as Buayan District and became a municipality of South

Cotabato by virtue of Republic Act No. 82 in January 1948. Its history begun on February 27,1939 when the first Christian settlers led by General Paulino Santos landed on the shores ofSarangani Bay together with 62 first batchers.

Economic growth in the area has been apparent with the establishment of the basic institutionsand infrastructures and the construction of roads and the establishment of multi-million companiessuch as Standard Fruits Company (STAFILCO and Coca-Cola Bottling Company and theestablishment of first radio station in 1964. The municipality was classified then as a fourth classmunicipality. House Bill 5862 was filed converting General Santos Municipality into a city andrenaming it to Rajah Buayan City. However, the Bill was rejected. It was only in 1968 that themunicipality turned into a city through the passage of Republic Act 5412. More schools were putup in this time including the establishment of government hospital, public market, major streets

and highways and the building of bridges and the construction of the new city hall. Undeniably,with this development, the city became a first class city since 1975 based on its income.

1.2 General Characteristics and Geographic Boundaries

General Santos City lies at the southern part ofthe Philippines. It is located between 125°1'and 125°17' east longitude and between 5°58'and 6°20' north latitude. The city is southeast ofManila, southeast of Cebu and southwest ofDavao. The municipalities of Alabel, Malungon

and Maasim of Sarangani Province and themunicipalities of Polomolok and T'boli of SouthCotabato surround the city (CPDO-GSC ).

1.2.1 Political Subdivision

The City belongs to the First Congressional District of South Cotabato and is one of the 5 cities ofSOCCSKSARGEN Region. Currently, the city has 26 barangays (CPDO-GSC).

1.2.2 Land Area

The City has a total land area of 53,606 hectares. Barangay Sinawal constitutes the biggest landarea at about 68.76 sq. km followed by Barangays Tambler and Siguel with a land area of 57.74and 52.87 sq. km, respectively. Meawhile, Dadiangas East and Dadiangas South had smallerland area of 0.61 sq. km (Please see Table 1.1 of the land area of the barangays).

General Santos City, a highly urbanized city of the South Cotabato had a population density of987.84 in 2007 registering an increase of 28.58 percent over the 2000 period. Actual populationdensity in 2007 is lower than the projected value of the 1995 Census-based population projection

that would reach 1,043.20.

NSO 2005 Philippine Yearbook reveals that in 2000, General Santos City ranked 12 th among the16 highly urbanized cities in the Philippines outside NCR with respect to its population density,where Mandaue City (10,306.67 sq. km) and Butuan City (327.31) considered highly dense andleast dense cities, respectively.

On the other hand, Bgy Dadiangas West with an estimated land area of 0.86 sq. km. was noted tobe the most densely populated barangay with 21,224.42 persons per sq. km. followed by

Dadiangas South and Bula (Table 1.1). Meanwhile, Tambler, the largest barangay in terms ofpopulation, Siguel, Sinawal and Upper Labay were the least densely populated barangays of thecity.

1.2.3 Topography

Majority of the entire land area constitutes wide flat lands stretching northeast of the city andundulating terrain. Mt. Matutum, towards the North, towers at 2,293 meters above sea level. Mt.Parker, at the Southwestern part of South Cotabato, towers at 2,040 meters above sea level(CPDO-GSC).

1.2.4 Natural Resources

There are six sluggish rivers draining the city. There are also six creeks, three large cold springsand several minor springs that have potentials as sources of potable water. Underground water isusually shallow.

Uncertain quantities of mineral deposits are present in the city. Such minerals are limestone, ironsand, sulfur, copper, gold, nitrate, luminate, rutile and guano. Abundant sand and gravel are beingquarried at the Silway, Siguel and Buayan rivers (CPDO-GSC ).

1.3 Number and Population of Urban and Rural Barangays

General Santos City, a highly urbanized city has 26 barangays with the addition of 9 barangaysfrom 1990. In 2000, most of the barangays were classified as urban with 65%, while 34.6% wereclassified as rural barangays. However, comparing its proportion against the 1990, it can benoted that only 17.6% were classified as rural while 82.4% classified as urban barangays. Withthe increasing trend in the population and with the creation of new barangays, the urbanity of acertain area is affected.

Urbanity concept in the barangay level is an indicator of economic progress of a certain area. Acertain barangay is considered urban if its poblacion or district has a street pattern, with at leastsix establishments (commercial, manufacturing, recreational and/or personal services and with at

least three of the following: a town hall, church or chapel with religious services at least once amonth, a public plaza, park or cemetery, a market place or building where trading activities arecarried on at least once a week, a public building like school, hospital, puericulture and healthcenter or library and regardless of population size.

Tambler had the highest annual growth rate

Tambler is now the fastest growing barangay in terms of population with annual growth rate of11.85 percent between 2000 and 2007, tripling the city’s growth rate of 3.53 percent. Fatimawhich displayed the highest average annual population growth rate (12.64%) between the period

1995 and 2000 displaced in the rank of the five highest barangay with only 4.75 percent in 2000-2007.

If the rate continues to be at 11.85 percent, the population of Tambler will double in the next sixyears to come reaching about 18,378 people in 2013 adding more than three thousand personsannually. The population of Siguel (8,238) has almost doubled with the second highest annualgrowth rate of 9.18 percent and it will double at exactly 7.6 years adding 2,168 persons annually.Apopong ranked third with 5.60 percent annual growth rate. Its population will double in the next12 years with 7,042 persons added annually. San Isidro followed, with 5.16 annul growth ratedoubling its population in 13 years adding 5,804 persons annually and Baluan with 5.03 percentgrowth rate and will be doubled around 14 years adding 959 persons annually.

2.2 Population Projection

Population projection at the provincial, regional and national level is computed using cohortcomponent method which utilizes data on fertility, mortality and migration. With the unavailabilityof these data, the method in computing projections used is the ratio and proportion method. Table2.2 presented the projected population of the city utiIizing the population projection with census-based year in 1995.

2.3 Other Demographic Characteristics

With the unavailability of the other demographic characteristics in the 2007 Census results, thedata presented under this section utilized the latest available results of the 2000 Census ofPopulation with comparison to other censal years.

Five persons in every one household

A household may comprise of a nuclear family and/or extended family. In 2000, household in thecity had an average size of around 5 persons. Notably, there was a slight decrease in thehousehold size as the year advances (Table 2.3).

More single persons in the city

The city's total household population was dominated by single persons accounted for more thanhalf (58%) of the population while legally married constitutes only 34% or 139,980 in number asshown in the table below. Common law/live-in persons shares a minimal percentage of 4%. Of allpersons aged 10 years old and over, there were more married people (45.84%) than singles

(43.49%). However, this proportion went down by 3.24 percentage points compared to 1995.Notably, there was an increase in the proportion of common law or live-in from 2.25% in 1995 to5.42% in 2000. This indicates that people tend to settle for a live-in arrangement than to besolemnized legally.

Of the total household population, 0.8 percent had disabilities. Among the barangays, BarangayConel had the highest percentage of disability, although it constitutes only 7.40 percent of thetotal number of disabled persons. Barangay Olympog, on the other hand, had 1.71 percent andMabuhay had 1.25%.

Almost one out of four had low vision

Low vision was the most common type of disability accounting for 23.95 percent in 2000,increasing by 7.14 percent from 1995. Partial blindness slightly went down to 6.49 percent whileoral defect increased to 5.75 percent in 2000 from 5.46% in 1995 (Table 2.7). Mentally illindividuals decreased its percentage from 4.51% in 1995 to 0.40% in 2000.

2.4 Fertility, Mortality and Migration

Fertility, mortality and migration are determining factors of population change. One importantmeasure of fertility is the crude birth rate, which is the number of births per 1000 population. Theresults of the 2000 Census of Population also provides birth registration counts as shown below.

The above table shows that 90.10 percent are registered, while 4.20 percent are not registeredwith the Office of the Local Civil Registrars and reported to have 0.40 percent who did not knowabout their birth registration.

At the barangay level, highest registration of birth is noted for barangays Ligaya and Katangawanboth with 94.70 percent, San Isidro (94.20%) and Baluan (94.10%). Meanwhile, barangays

Siguel (48.0%), San Jose (49.30%), Tambler (61.50%) and Batomelong (63.20%) noted to havethe least registration counts.

Average Parity of Ever-Married Women aged 45 to 49 was also considered as a fertility measure.This refers to the number of children ever-born by a woman in her entire life.

Table 2.11 presents statistics on the average parity of ever-married women aged 45 to 49 yearsold. The data makes use of the 2000 Census of Population and Housing results, which asked therespondents if any living children had been born by women aged 45 to 49 years in the householdsor the total number of children ever born by women in their entire life. Women aged 45-49 yearsof age considered to have reached or are reaching menopausal stage and no longer pregnant.Therefore, their number of children born is found substantial and their parity is a measure of

completed fertility.

2.7 Children for every married woman aged 15 to 49

A woman aged between 15-49 years of age considered to be in the childbearing age had born anaverage of 2.7 children. Of all women aged 15-19, more than half (51.97%) of this population hadno children while 36.15 percent had only 1 child. It can be noted that a lot of women (16%) in

their mid 20's (25-29 years old) had born an average of two children. And upon reachingmenopausal stage (45-49 years old), more women had born between 3 to 5 children in their entirelives.

Average Parity is 4.8

In 2000, out of the 70,001 ever-married women in General Santos City (Table 2.10), 10.6 percentwere women aged 45 to 49 years old. Of this age group, women had born an average of 4.22children. This means that when a woman reaches at the age between 45-49 years, an average of4.22 children will be born in her entire life.

The table above shows the number of live births in General Santos City from 2004 to 2007 bysex. It indicates that generally more males are born than females as illustrated in Figure 2.C.This implies that there are still more males than females in the city or the sex ratio at birth is high.In 2004, for every 100 females who were born, 109 males were also born. In 2005, there were110 males for every 100 females born. In 2006, there was a decrease in the sex ratio to 108males per 100 females born in the city and still the same in 2007 (108).

Marriage

Marriage is one indicator of population boom. The occurrences of marriages result to highincidence of birth occurrences or high fertility rate. Table 2.12 below shows the number of ever-married women 15 to 49 years old by age at first marriage. In 2000, of the total 70,001 ever-married women, 11.35 percent of them married at the age of 20 years old. While 10.64 percentgot married at the age of 18 and 9.07 percent got married at the age of 19.

Meanwhile, the age at first marriage of ever-married women aged 15-19 was 17, while those aged

20-24 years old got married at the age of 19. Those at the mid 20's and late 20's got married atthe age of 21. While, those 30 and above got married at the age of 22.

Measures of mortality are usually derived from the civil registration system using death counts.Table 2.13 presents the number of deaths from 2004-2007.

Death occurrence in General Santos City had a sluggish increase from 2004-2007. With 2,451 in2004, it increased to 2,455 (0.16%) in 2005. In 2006, 5.73 percent has added to the death countsand only 0.30 percent in 2007.

Migration rate is 6.84 percent

One of the contributing factors of population increases is migration. In General Santos City, it isevident that almost 9 out 10 inhabitants are residing in the same city five years ago (89.64%).However, there were 6.84 percent of the inhabitants who had in-migrated General Santos Cityfrom other cities or municipalities of the same province and other provinces, while 1.41 percent ofthem had migrated in the city from other municipality or city, and 6.07 percent from otherprovinces.
