GLOBAL DATA SYNCHRONIZATION DEFINED
• Data synchronization is the electronic transfer of standardized
product and entity information between trading partners and the
continuous synchronization of that data over time
• Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) is the key to product information:
– Brand name and product descriptions
– Ingredients, allergens, nutrients
– Product labeling, certifications, organic
• Global Location Number (GLN) can include:
– Brand Owner
– Manufacturer

The USDA Food Connect Website can capture 107 product attributes for a single
item. Of these 107, GDSN currently accommodates 91 of them.

identify food products produced from a variety of agricultural
commodities.
Improve the flow of food product information from US manufacturers
and processors to schools and other US Government supported food
procurement groups.

USDA will contract with one of the GS1 authorized Data Pools
USDA will import nutritional data from the data pool and make it
available to schools
Data will be transferred through an automated system
Food Connect will update data on a routine schedule
Food Connect has built-in nutrition screen to verify data integrity
USDA will further develop Food Connect to share the data with third
party software providers
