GRID
F3572.5 - 145 - 170 kV Gas-insulated Substations
The F35 GIS is 3-phase, SF6 gas-insulated,
high voltage metal enclosed substation
designed for indoor and outdoor instal-
lations.
Alstom Grid has been actively involved in
SF6 technology for several decades and our
GIS have been in use worldwide since 1965
with proven success. Excellent reports from
the field confirm the soundness of our tech-
nical concepts.
Proven designThe reliable operation of our F35 GIS is
the result of field-proven design principles,
a purely mechanical operating mechanism,
up to date computer aided design methods
and comprehensive development and
type testing. Our designs are governed by
ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified quality
and environmental management systems.
Due to the architectural principles applied
and the new concepts developed, the
F35 switchgear is completely adaptable to
the layouts used in modern electrical
solutions.
The arrangement is suitable for future
extensions or modifications of the equip-
ment. It enables new, original and cost-
Customer benefits
• Flexibility
• Space saving, high compactness
• Increased safety and reliability
• Modularity and adaptability
• Easier operation
• Accessibility of components
The increasing demand for electrical power in cities and industrial centres requires the installation of compact and efficient distribution and transmissionnetworks. High voltage gas-insulated substations (GIS) are ideal for such applications.
effective solutions, while preserving the
necessary operating security and mainte-
nance criteria.
The F35 GIS is fully type tested to meet IEC
and ANSI ratings and requirements.

The mechanical drives are simple, contain
few moving parts and do not need any
interphase adjustments.
The organisation of the gas compartments
is optimised so as to require the minimum
number of gaskets: this means excellent
gas-tightness performance.
The enclosures are made of cast/sheet
aluminium. Their shapes are optimised to
meet the most demanding dielectric perfor-
mances.
The aluminium alloys have been selected for
their superior resistance to corrosion.
The switching components are equipped
with position indicators easily readable from
the gangways. Viewing windows to check
the contact position of disconnectors are
also available as an option.
The sealing between flanges is ensured by a
synthetic elastomeric gasket with a specially
designed cross-section providing three
concentric seals: this ensures excellent long-
term gas tightness.

System advantages
Top quality manufacturing and rigorous inspection guarantee excellent performance
The partitioning of the GIS into gas com-
partments is optimised for minimum service
interference during maintenance, extensions
and on site testing.
Each compartment is equipped with desic-
cant to absorb humidity and gas decom-
position products, a pressure relief device,
a density switch or sensor to monitor gas
density and a filling valve.
All connecting conductors are made of
aluminium or copper and are silver-plated
at the joints. The contacts are of the sliding
type to allow expansion without transmit-
ting mechanical stresses to the support
insulators. Finger or tulip contacts are used
for dynamic contacts, along with tungsten
protected contacts for short circuit and load
switching contacts.

Circuit breakerAlstom Grid has developed a circuit breaker
with three single-phase interrupting elements
contained in the same enclosure. The circuit
breaker uses an innovative and very reliable
spring-operated mechanism, developed
thanks to Alstom Grid’s technical expertise.
Combined 3-position disconnector/earthing switchThe basic element of the device is a moving
contact performing both the disconnector
and earthing switch functions. The design
prevents simultaneous closing of both
switches. Three positions are available for
the contacts:
• Disconnector closed
and earthing switch open
• Disconnector open
and earthing switch open
• Disconnector open
and earthing switch closed
The disconnectors are able to switch the
capacitive charging currents of the busbars
and bus transfer currents in double busbar
substations.
The disconnectors/earthing switches are
operated by an electrical operating mecha-
nism directly attached to the equipment.
GIS Components
The circuit breaker and spring-operated
mechanism are designed and tested for
extensive operation and a long service life
and are virtually maintenance-free.
Combinedcircuit breaker/disconnector The OPTIGIS® solution, based on proven
GIS technology, integrates circuit breaker
and disconnector functionality.
The circuit breaker’s breaking capacity and
the disconnector’s higher insulation level of
the insulating distance is tested via a series
of interrupting tests representing at least
25 years of circuit breaker operation.
Values tested for the circuit breaker/dis-
connector are fully in accordance with IEC
requirements.
Make-proof earthing switchThe moving contacts are activated by a
charged spring for opening and closing.
Make-proof earthing switches are used for
safe earthing of primary circuits, including
closing on short-circuit and switching
induced current.
The position indicator is mechanically linked
to the earthing switch contacts and is easily
visible from the operating level.
The earthing contacts of the make-proof
earthing switch can be electrically insulated
from the enclosures. This allows current
injection for adjustment of the protection
relays and the ability to check the resistance
of the main conductors or the ratings of the
current transformers.

High voltage interfaces F35 type switchgear can be directly
connected to high voltage cables, transfor-
mers or overhead lines.
• Connection to high voltage cables
All types and sizes of cables can be con-
nected, according to IEC standards.
The plug-in dry type cable connection is
designed to incorporate cable-end insulators
at IEC standard dimensions.
• Connection to power transformer/
reactor
The F35 can be directly connected to power
transformers/shunt reactors by means of
gas-insulated busducts connected to an
SF6-to-oil compartment which meets IEC
recommendations. Removable links enable
dielectric testing of the GIS at the interface
with the transformer bushings.
• Connection to overhead lines
The F35 GIS connects to overhead lines by
busducts and SF6 air bushings. The compo-
site or porcelain insulators are filled with
SF6 gas. Electric field grading based on
SF6 insulation provides an excellent voltage
surge withstand and guarantees a long
service life.
A range of insulators allows external creep -
age distances to meet specific customer
requirements. Composite insulators are also
lightweight and explosion proof – a valuable
safety feature.
• Interconnection elements
Telescopic coupling elements with sliding
sleeve joints on the conductors allow the
removal and installation of components
for assembly, extension and maintenance
work without dismantling other switchgear
components.
Expansion bellows are provided when
needed to compensate for thermal expansion
movements and tolerances.
Customised instrument transformersThe switchgear is equipped with conventional
instrument transformers housed in standard
enclosures. The technical specifications can
suit all applicable protection and measure-
ment standards and practices.
Voltage transformers are equipped with an
integrated disconnecting facility for GIS and
power cable testing, without any additional
dismantling and gas handling.

Local control
Local control is integrated into the switch-
gear. The local control of each bay provides
the following functions:
• Control and monitoring of the bays and
density of the SF6 gas inside the
compartments
• Electrical interlocking between com-
ponents
• Interface between the remote control,
local control and the GIS equipment.
Digital or conventional technology may be
used for these functions.
Digital bay control ensures the control and
measuring functions and provides enhanced
information for the substation and/or
remote control.
The cabling of the GIS devices to the control
cubicle is executed in the factory before
delivery.
Complete factory functional tests of the
control cubicle and GIS configuration are
carried out according to the latest IEC
standards. Thus, minimum time is required
for onsite installation and commissioning.
The control and monitoring system of all
GIS functions enables predictive instead of
preventive maintenance.
Fully tested, easily shipped and erected
The F35 Gas insulated Substation is fully
assembled and fully tested in the factory
according to IEC/ANSI. Up to three bays are
combined in one transport unit, then shipped
to the site. Shipping units are filled with SF6
or dry nitrogen gas at a slight overpressure,
to prevent moisture and dust ingress during
transport. The equipment’s light weight
and compactness considerably simplifies
transport and on site erection.
The bay fixation with adjustable supports
bolted to the floor enables simple and rapid
erection work with minimum requirements
on the concrete floor.
After erection, the complete substation under-
goes final inspection and commissioning
tests. Dielectric tests, including partial
discharge measurements according to the
relevant standards, ensure the dielectric
integrity of the GIS.

Mobile substation
Mobile substations are flexible and effective
solutions and can be customised to the
client’s needs.
Possible applications are temporary replace-
ment of installations with similar voltages
in emergencies caused by upgrades, plant
expansions, prolonged authorisation proces-
ses, breakdowns, short-term peak energy
demands, natural phenomena damage and
maintenance and operation requirements.
Mobile substations are designed for easy
relocation using conventional transportation.
The mobile substations are completely
assembled and tested according to the rele-
vant standards at the factory and include
all connections of the components to the
integrated local control cubicle and to the
common earthing point.
The erection of the mobile substation on
site is quick and simple:
• Connection of the station earth
to the common earthing point
• Connection of the plug-in power cables
to the cable terminations and fixations
on the pre-assembled auxiliary frames
• Connection of the remote control
to the local control cubicle
• Filling of the gas compartments with SF6
to operating levels
With its reduced number of components,
the commissioning and operation of the
mobile substation is easy and safe and does
not require any adjustments before entering
into service.
