The Global Scale of English and the Common European Framework of Reference

The Global Scale of English is a standardised, granular scale from 10 to 90 which measures English languageproficiency.ItisalignedwiththeCommonEuropeanFrameworkofReference(CEFR).UnliketheCEFR,whichdescribesproficiencyintermsofbroadlevels,theGlobalScaleofEnglishidentifieswhatalearnercandoateachpointonamoregranularscale—andwithinaCEFRlevel.Thescaleisdesignedtomotivatelearnersbydemonstratingincrementalprogressintheirlanguageability.TheGlobalScaleofEnglishformsthebackboneforPearsonEnglishcoursematerialandassessment.

CEFRandtheGlobalScaleofEnglishbothcompriseanumberofCanDostatementsforeachofthefourlanguageskills,describingwhatlearnersshouldbeabletodoatdifferentlevelsofproficiency.TheGlobalScaleofEnglishCanDostatementshavebeenalignedtotheCEFR,andmanyadditionalstatementscreated,ratedfordifficulty,andcalibratedtothescale.

This document provides an overview of the Can Do statements that are covered in each unit of the course.ForeachlearningobjectiveweindicatewhetherastatementisfromtheoriginalCEFRornewlycreatedbyPearsonEnglish:
