GSI Creos handles a diverse range of industrial products from process machines incorporating state-of-the-art technologies for automotive lightweighting, to semiconductor equipment & materials, raw materials for paint & coatings and hobby products. These products are divided into 3 categories--Speciality Chemicals, Advanced Machinery & Materials and Hobby & Life--and in these areas, we have continued to provide cutting-edge value that always meets customer needs, while giving consideration to the environment.

Carbon is a material which has been used from ancient times, right up to the present day. Research into nano carbons (abbreviation for nano-sized and nano-structured carbon materials) has progressed in recent years unlocking the unlimited potential of this material to a point where it is now said that the 21st Century will mark “the era of Nano Carbons.” At GSI Creos, we are channeling energy into research in nanotechnology as a strategic business area and are currently leading the way in the development of applications for nano carbons in a range of products in various fields with the aim of commercialization.

GSI Creos is presently working on advanced research and development of applications for our CNT, “Carbere®,” a major material of nano carbons. Our research to date has revealed that “Carbere®” possesses a range of superior properties including mechanical strength and electrical conductivity etc. We have establ ished a research and development facility, Nano Carbon Development Center (NCDC), for this new and innovative material and are cur rent ly work ing together w i th industry, academia and government o rgan iza t ions and have a l ready succeeded in developing practical applications and productization in the area of advanced composite materials and paints etc. Based on the unique properties of our Cup Stacked Carbon Nanotubes (CSCNT), GSI Creos is d e l i v e r i n g n e w a n d i n n o v a t i v e a p p l i c a t i o n s o n i n d e p e n d e n t l y developed and invented technology.

We have developed high performance resin coating systems boasting superior performance in major physical properties, such as corrosion resistance, impact resistance and abrasion resistance. Our coating systems are already being used as the surface treatment under highly corrosive environments such as onshore and offshore area and other severe conditions. These app l ica t ions in chemica l p lan ts , power genera t ing infrastructures, vessels and ocean observational systems etc. remarkably realize long lifetime of those structures, hence contribute to significant energy and resource savings.

Development of advanced coating systems to withstand the harsh environment

Catalyst supported by “Carbere®”

One of the major technical issues surrounding fuel cells is said to be reducing the amount of precious metal used as the catalyst and increasing durability of the catalyst. By modifying our CSCNT using our unique technologies, GSI Creos has been resolving these problems contributing to expansion of the fuel cell market, a key player in next generation energy devices.

Using our unique technologies, we have effectively dispersed CSCNT into conventional CFRP to improve mechanical properties by approximately 30% thanks to joint development with Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). Main applications for this technology include sporting products such as bicycles, golf clubs, tennis rackets and fishing rods etc. With further development to increase strength and modulus, we aim to contribute to the energy field and high-speed transportation infrastructures.

Our transition into nanotechnology in the late 1990s was triggered by our e n c o u n t e r w i th Chemica l Vapo r Deposition (CVD) equipment in our industrial products division. Our carbon nanotubes, “Carbere®,” synthesized using CVD processes, have a unique shape, a stacking morphology of truncated conical graphene layers, or what we cal l Cup Stacked Carbon Nanotubes (CSCNT) and their superior properties are being revealed through further research and development.
