Living Out God’s Purpose

C.S. Lewis said, “There are two kinds of

people: those who say to God, ‘Thy will be

done,’ and those to whom God says, ‘All

right, then, have it your way.’ ” As

redeemed children of God, of course, we

desire to belong to that first category, “Thy

will be done.”

Converting our belief into action is the

best way to be faithful. As Christians,

we continually look for ways to help

those around us.

Blood Drive

Good Samaritan donated 17 pints

of blood which can

save up to 51 lives.

Previous blood drives

resulted in 7 pints and

9 pints. We doubled our past

contributions!!! Way to go Good

Sam!!!

Trunk Or Treat

There were 35 trunks, over 50

volunteers, and over 250 kids (not

counting adults) at the Trunk Or

Treat Event on Oct 27. It was a

great opportunity to reach out to

the community, and

provide a safe, fun,

wholesome

experience for all!

Thank you to all who volunteered,

decorated their trunks, donated

candy, helped set up and tear down,

and most of all, opened their hearts

to our community!!

Pastor’s Column

by Rev. Scott K. Hove

“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his

love endures forever.”

(Psalm 107:1 - NIV)

Thanksgiving is more than an official U. S.

holiday. For the Christian thanksgiving is to be a

way of life based on what we have been given

by God through Jesus Christ. If all of our health

and material possessions were stripped away

we would still know God’s love and that it

endures forever … whatever life throws at

us! Paul reminds us that nothing “will be able to

separate us from the love of God that is in Christ

Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:39b)

What we do at Good Samaritan is a

response to God’s love. We aren’t a giving,

sharing, loving and caring people in order to

earn a reward, rather we are striving to do those

things as a response to God’s love. “We love

because he first loved us!” (1 John 4:19 - NIV)

November is the month when members

and attenders are asked to prayerfully consider

their commitments of finances and time in the

upcoming year. It’s a perfect time to ask you to

do this; not simply because budgets have to be

determined; but, rather, because it is a time

when “thanksgiving” is in focus. Our response to

a stewardship emphasis is not one that should

be made from guilt but from a thankful heart! It

is not a response to a pastoral plea but a

response to God’s love that can take a tangible

form.

One of my friends liked to remind me that

anyone who has a roof over their head, a

furnace, an air-conditioner, a bathroom and a

refrigerator lives better than royalty did just a

century ago. Even after a great recession we

enjoy so much! Yet, it is so easy to forget the

everyday things.

At Good Samaritan let’s never forget the

everyday things we have been blessed

with. Let’s give thanks for a great place to

worship, a school that is giving kids a great

education in the name of Jesus, tremendous

volunteers, varied worship styles, an expanding

campus, lots of young families and for “old”

saints, too! Let’s give thanks for the

opportunities to help others locally and around

the world, Bible studies, youth programs,

nurseries, and for what is to come!

Let’s give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;

his love endures forever!

Don't let your worries get the best of you; Remember, Moses

started out as a basket case.

Some people are kind, polite, and sweet-spirited

Until you try to sit in their pews.

Many folks want to serve God,

But only as advisers.

It is easier to preach ten sermons

Than it is to live one.

The good Lord didn't create anything without a purpose,

But mosquitoes come close.

When you get to your wit's end,

You'll find God lives there.

People are funny; they want the front of the bus,

Middle of the road,

And back of the church.

Opportunity may knock once,

But temptation bangs on the front door forever.

Quit griping about your church;

If it was perfect, you couldn't belong.

If a church wants a better pastor,

It only needs to pray for the one it has.

We're called to be witnesses, not lawyers or Judges.

God Himself doesn't propose to judge a man until

he is dead. So why should you?

Some minds are like concrete -

Thoroughly mixed up and permanently set.

Peace starts with a smile.

I don't know why some people change churches;

What difference does it make which one you stay home from?

November Sermon Series

Living Out God’s Purpose!

C.S. Lewis said, “There are two kinds of people:

those who say to God, ‘Thy will be done,’ and

those to whom God says, ‘All right, then, have

it your way.’ ” As redeemed children of God, of

course, we desire to belong to that first

category, “Thy will be done.”

On Sundays November 10, 17, & 24th the theme

of our worship services will Living Out God’s

Purpose! We will learn how the Holy Spirit,

transforms us to be more like our Jesus, who

willingly poured out his life in giving and serving,

ultimately sacrificing his very life for our eternal

lives.

As your pastor, I pray that each of you will take

advantage of these opportunities to discover

how you can live out God’s Purposes in your

life more and more each day, that you might be

strengthened in faith both for eternity and for a

fruitful life here on earth.

The particular themes for the three Sundays are

as follows:

Sunday, Nov. 10th “Living With an Attitude of

Gratitude”

Sunday, Nov. 17th “Living as a Servant”

Sunday, Nov. 24th “Living Joyfully and

Generously”

“Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand

firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves

fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that

your labor in the Lord is for a great purpose.” (1

Corinthians 15:58)

Living out God’s Purpose Commitment Weekend

Sat./Sunday, November 23rd/24th

is our church community’s Com-

mitment Weekend. I would like to

encourage you to plan now to at-

tend two important events. Satur-

day night or Sunday morning wor-

ship and a Celebration Breakfast

immediately following each Sunday

morning service. (This will be a

catered breakfast by owner of

“The Griddle” restaurant which

many of you attend on Sunday

mornings after services already.)

On Saturday night we will be hav-

ing a dessert social instead of the

breakfast.

Please be on the lookout for a

letter coming your way which will

explain much more about the

weekend and our attitude towards

stewardship here at Good Samari-

tan Lutheran Church. Also under-

stand, any commitment you may

make this weekend is a personal

matter between you and God. It

stays private and we will not ques-

tion that commitment or pressure

you to give more, even if you feel

you cannot make one at this time.

Yet, I also feel it is of some spiritu-

al importance that I give you the

opportunity to make that yearly

commitment in a prayerful and

thoughtful manner.

We will be contacting you to se-

cure your reservation to attend

the worship service and breakfast

or dessert social so we know how

All Saints Sunday

Would you appreciate a service that will bring healing and hope? Do you have a loved one you would like to honor or remember?

Then join us the weekend of November 2nd and 3rd for our All Saints Ser-

vices. These are wonderful worship services where the focus is on re-

membering all the Saints who have gone before us, and finding hope in

many to plan for.

Thank you in advance for all that

you already do to make Good Sa-

maritan a great Christian commu-

nity. I am so thankful to be a part

of such a life-giving and hope filled

community and I hope you are as

well.

Your Fellow Servant in Christ

Pastor Don Lorfing

“I thank my God every time I remem-

ber you. In all my prayers for all of

you, I always pray with joy because of

your partnership in the gospel, (of
