11OverviewHome AutomationGSM base home automationBasic workingMotivationProblem definitionObjectives ScopeCost estimationTime shedulePros & consConclusion2Home AutomationWhy we need it..?Forgetting to switch off devices while leaving home.

Needs arising to operate devices while we are not able to access them physically.

ImplementationDevices are connected to an embedded system.

The embedded system is programmed to control the devices according to commands from a remote.

3GSM base home automationHome Automation A Microcontroller System

Remote A GSM Mobile Phone

Commands SMS

4Basic Working

User sends commands via SMS

Mobile at the system transfers it to Micro controller

The Microcontroller operates the Devices according to the command received.

5MotivationThe motivation is to facilitatethe userstoautomate their homeshaving ubiquitous access. Thesystem provides availability due to development of alow cost system. The home appliances con-trol system with anaffordablecost was thought to be built thatshould be mobile providing re-mote access to the appliancesand allowing home security.6Problem definitionOne of the limitations about this is non availability of power because the power system makes use of power supply from Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN). Though this is a major problem but with thought about alternative source of power, it is a problem that will soon be a by-gone. Also another limitation noticed in the above work is the failure of network or busy network which will make the phone embedded in the system not to be available when called.

7ObjectivesTo co-ordinate appliances and other devices through Short Message Service(SMS).To effectively receive and transmit data via SMSTo eliminate the need of being physically present in any location for tasks involving the operation of appliances within a household/office.Minimize power and time wastage8ScopeThe scope of our project GSM Based control system is immense. The future implications of the project are very great considering the amount of time and resources it saves. The project we have undertaken can be used as a reference or as a base for realizing a scheme to be implemented in other projects of greater level such as weather forecasting, temperature updates, device synchronization, etc. The project itself can be modified to achieve a complete Home Automation system which will then create a platform for the user to interface between himself and the household

9Pros & consProsGlobal Range

Low Cost Low Power Requirement

ConsDelays in mobile networks

Need of a mobile phone entirely dedicated for the system
