Sadly this is the only newsletter that we have been able to publish this year but hopefully during 2012 normalservice will be resumed and we will be able to publish at least 2 in the year.

The big news we have to tell is that we have been able to agree a rental with The Parish of St. Thomas to allowus to fully return to St. Stephens Church Hall, this will also enable Second Chance to return with us. Hopefullyas we will have a base again in the Community we will attempt to bring further projects to the Community.

As mentioned elsewhere in the Issue Second Chance will be operating from St. Stephens from Monday January9th, 2012 and their last Sale Day in Port Tennant Community Centre will be on Wednesday December 7th,2011, the break will give us the time to move everything back to St. Stephens.

The Grand Santa Project will operate again this year and hopefully the weather will be better than last year tofacilitate delivery of Santa’s letter to all those Children that wrote to Santa, although even with the weather wehad last year I think we were able to deliver all the letters and special thanks to all those that helped with thedelivery.

The special post boxes will be in the 3 Doctors Surgeries from Monday December 5th and there will also be apost box at the Gwyn Mission on Sunday morning during the Children's Service and on Monday evening dur-ing Sunshine Corner. A post box will also be at Second Chance during each of their openings during Decem-ber.

The 2011 Eastside Carnival was a success again this year and the inclusion of vehicle floats seemed to be apopular addition to all those that lined the route. The Carnival Queen event was also a success with a few moreentries for the Carnival Queen category this year. It would be good if we could get more entries in all catego-ries next year. A report and a selection of photo’s from both events appear elsewhere in this Issue.

The 2012 Eastside Carnival will be held on Saturday July 14th, further information will be published in theNew Year. A Lantern Parade will also be held on St. David’s Day, Thursday March 1st. This will be a jointventure with SA1 who have hired an Artist to work on the project and he intends to hold various workshops inthe Community, further details are published on Page 10. The Bi-Annual Awards event is also due to be held in2012 but no firm date or venue has been agreed yet, further details to follow.

In the New Year we will be able to communicate with you through the Internet as hopefully our new web pagewill be ready along with a new presence on Facebook, we will then be able to publish various information suchas photo’s, video’s, reports etc. The web address will be www.gsppartnership.org.uk and search for us on Face-book by using GSP-Regeneration-Partnership

We are always looking for volunteers for all our Projects so if you would like to offer any assistance with anyof the GSP projects please leave a message on 01792475882 or send an email [email protected] with your details and someone will get back to you.

SECOND CHANCE FINANCES

As mentioned elsewhere in this Issue it is only by the help of the Port Tennant Community Centre Board wasSecond Chance able to stay in existence during 2011. Contrary to some popular belief Second Chance doesn'tmake vast amounts of money, it’s the Membership of Second Chance that make money selling their items, Sec-ond Chance is only able to survive through assistance of others.

I have set out below some figures which hopefully will explain how Second Chance operates.

Up to the end of November 2011 we will have operated for 42 weeks and total Sales amounted to £2,761.40 ofwhich we paid to Members £2,209.12 and the 20% commission to Second Chance amounted to £552.28. Otherways we get our revenue is through sales of items donated to Second Chance of £258.51 and of course the Caféwhich made £457.59. We also had 30 new Members which amounted to £30.00 with Members donationsamounted to £18.40. The sale of clothes which had been donated and past their sell by date amounted to £59.85giving Second Chance a total income for 2011 of £1346.63.

The expenses incurred included the main one which was the rent of £1,050.00, printing of the small sales cardsand Pull Sheets amounted to £123.25 and various other supplies amounted to £56.00 for a total expenditure of£1,229.25.

On paper it looks like we made a profit of £117.38 in 2011 but in reality there are certain items that have beenbought by the GSP (like Rails, Stationary & Storage Boxes) that have not been included. At the end of the daythe GSP Board are quite happy just to provide this service to the Community.

2011 CARNIVAL REPORT

The 2011 GSP Eastside Carnival was held at Jersey Park on Saturday July 17th and we were fortunateagain this year in that the rain held off for most of the day.

This year saw the introduction of vehicle floats and we are grateful to the 2 Entrants who participated, wealso had the GSP Carnival Queen float and a Red Bus from the Bus Museum. Everyone commented onhow nice it was to see vehicle floats taking part again.

The Parade was led by the Eastside Jazz Band and a tribute was paid to Mr Percy Gilbert their leader formany years on being awarded the MBE by the Queen. He seemed to really enjoy the honour of riding inan open top car at the head of the Parade.

Another first this year was hiring The Samba Tawe Band to walk with the Parade and also to give a dis-play in the park. Thanks also to Community First for hiring Uncle Sam who entertained in the park andalso walked the parade on his stilts.

Many thanks to all those who advertised in the Lucky Paper Programme and to those that bought a Pro-gramme which incidentally the prize of a 19” TV has never been claimed, the winning ticket wasprogramme # 209 , if you have this Programme number please contact any Board Member. The 2ndPrize of a trial membership at the Village Gym was won by Billy Williams with Programme # 289.

FAMILY HISTORY

St David’s Day Spring Lantern Processionwith Terry Chinn

As darkness falls on March 1st 2012, SA1 will see an unusual celebration for St David’s Day as hundreds of spe-cially made lanterns will move in procession from the communities of Grenfell Park, St Thomas and PortTennant, over the sail bridge to the new developments in SA1 and ending in Ice House Square.

In the coming months, Artist Terry Chinn will be running workshops with members of the community to create afascinating range of original lanterns using a mixture of traditional techniques and modern LED technology. Thelanterns will be carried in poles as part of a procession so that they can be seen from a distance as they movealong the route. The event is being seen as part of the national celebrations for St David’s Day, as Welsh peoplethe world over commemorate their Patron Saint. Terry likens the lanterns as a ‘gift’ that is being brought fromthe long established communities that make up the GSP Partnership to their new neighbours in SA1: “Gift givingbetween communities can be seen as a welcome introduction, a barter for exchange and a simple connection be-tween people who are neighbours”.

Terry Chinn was instrumental in reintroducing lantern parades to Wales following his work with Welfare StateInternational Theatre company in the 1980’s . He has a background in theatre design, puppetry and shadow thea-tre techniques and has pioneered the use of lanterns as a way for people to have a hands on involvement with thearts, both through designing and making the lanterns as well as taking part in the procession.

The project is being funded by the SA1 public art fund as part of Swansea City Council’s programme of commu-nity engagement, which aims to make links between the new business developments and local residents. If you would like your community group or school to take part in Terry’s lantern making workshops, please con-tact Simon at [email protected] to book a place.

Have you ever wanted to start your Family Tree but didn't know how to start or what is available on the Internet.

If there is sufficient interest Dave Lloyd is prepared to run classes in the Computer Suite at St. Stephens . He willshow you the main Internet Sites which are both free and chargeable and how to use them.

You will need a basic understanding of computers, switching on and operating a mouse should be sufficient tounderstand what is being taught and hopefully it will be the starting block to you starting your family Tree. Ifyou haven't a home computer you could always use the free access to the Internet at St. Thomas Library, and allother Swansea Libraries.

If you are interested please send an email to Dave at [email protected] or if you don't have email accessleave a message on the GSP Answerphone on 01792-475822. Please leave your name and contact details andyour preference between Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday afternoon for the course to take place.

Depending upon the response it is hoped the classes will start in February 2012.

DO YOU HAVE A TATTOO?

Artists Craig Wood and Perry Roberts are gathering images of Swansea residents' tattoos to create apermanent artwork to be featured along the riverside walkway in the SA1 development. If you would like your tat-too considered for inclusion in the art project, please take a photo of your tattoo and email it as a jpg to either:[email protected] or [email protected]

At the end of the project, we would like to acknowledge every contributor so please include your full name, or letus know if you would prefer to remain anonymous.

SECOND CHANCEUPDATE

BACK TO ST. STEPHENS

With the GSP relocating back to St. Stephens the Second Chance Project will also be re-turning to St. Stephens and will begin operating from St. Stephens from 10 AM on MondayJanuary 9th, 2012.

The opening hours will be exactly the same as before, from 10 AM to 1 PM on both Mondayand Wednesday. Monday is the Take-In Day and Wednesday is Sales Day.

A special mention must be made of the Board of the Port Tennant Community Centre andespecially Lynne Dicks who were able to facilitate us when we found ourselves without aplace to operate from, at the start of this year. Without their assistance during the past yearthe Second Chance Project would have folded and a lot of Residents would have been un-able to avail themselves of the service that Second Chance gives the Community.
