SANS10400-Part XA: Energy usage in buildings This regulation Energy usage in buildings came into effect on 9 November 2011 and the building regulations known as South Africa National Standards 10400 or SANS 10400. SANS 10400 consists of 22 parts, under the general title “The application of the National Building Regulations” of which Part XA: Energy usage in buildings is applicable to us. This standard applies to all new buildings and building extensions as per the building occupancy classes specified in the regulation. SANS 10400 Part XA provide the building envelope requirements that involve areas such as Floors, Orientation, External walls, Fenestration, Roof assemblies and hot water services. The regulation divided South Africa into 6 climatic zones. The recommendations for the ‘R-value’ are based on the climatic conditions in particular locations. The ‘R-Value’ is the resistance to heat transfer across a material therefore the higher the R-Value the better the ability of the material to resist heat flow. The R-values, total R-values, and total U-values act as requirements to which SANS 204 must comply with.

SANS204: Energy efficiency in buildings This standard specifies the design requirements for energy efficiency in buildings and of services in buildings with natural environmental control and artificial ventilation or air conditioning systems. The R-values, total R-values, total U-values and SHGC contained in SANS 204 are used to comply with the requirements of Regulation SANS 10400-XA. SANS 204 provides typical data and deemed-to-satisfy thicknesses of generic insulation products. The available thermal guide assists in determining the level of typical insulation products to achieve “deemed to satisfy” rule for energy efficiency in for instance a roof or ceiling.



ENERGY EFFICIENCY – New Standards The Department of Trade and Industry published an amendment to the National Building Regulations on 9 September 2011 introducing requirements for energy usage in buildings. These regulations “Energy usage in buildings” and “Energy efficiency in buildings” are the deem-to-satisfy guidelines that we as Global Specialised Systems KZN use to advise our clients in order to comply with the new regulations.
