2016-2017 GT Star Class By Yadira Cansigno The recent GT star classes have not only been educational, but fun and exciting. I was in the first semester star class and everyone liked how they were able to purse and inform others about their personal interests. Usually in school, students are conformed to certain subjects but this star class gave others technology to turn their favorite subjects into a report. After weeks of studying and researching every student gives a report on what they learned. On the other hand, students in this GT class were also given the chance to get together and have other people learn alongside with them. Myself and 3 others learned French, which is much easier than doing it by yourself. Other groups included robotics, animals, photography and chemistry. One thing I loved was the technology and tools available to further your learning. And when the French learning students ended their session we taught the whole class a single word of French. This way everyone learned something new everyday. One thing that made this class different from others was how Fridays, the students became teachers. Every kid (or group) would teach the class something different than both individual and group projects. Lessons taught ranged from learning how to create slime to learning how to play volleyball. These days were awesome because students got a chance to teach about topics that they were experts on. Another exciting experience we were given was our field trip. On this field trip we missed only the beginning of 3rd hour Gifted & Talented Resources Delta County School District GT Website http:// specialservices.deltascho ols.com/gifted-talented/ Delta County GT Community on FaceBook https://www.facebook.com/ groups/496814840523273/ Western Colorado Association for Gifted & Talented www.gifted51.org Colorado Association for Gifted & Talented www.coloradogifted.org National Association for Gifted Children www.nagc.org February spotlight on Delta Middle School February 2017

(sadly enough) but were able to learn a lot from going to a Paonia farm. When we arrived we were taught about the distribution of their products and got to have a taste of their sweet apples. Then we were given a tour of their plants and afterwards were given their homemade apple cider.

Not only did this star class gave us an opportunity to educate ourselves on more personalized subjects but it also made us more friendly and have better connections between grades. From the beginning of the year to the end we (including Mr. Cummings) went from strangers to good friends. And the result of this friendship was more debates and further questions on about every subject imaginable.

2nd semester is showing up to be all last semester was and more with our group projects. They included, human anatomy, rockets, slime, dystopian survival, chemistry and aerial photography . I along with others am really glad GT was an option for star class for both semesters for the opportunities it opened up. !

The 6th graders have also been busy with projects! ! !!

GT Parent Council News On January 23, the Parent Council sponsored an informative program with Edith Johnston PhD, LPC exploring the many ways that gifted students’ brains are wired differently from their peers. An overview of You Think Differently, gave participants a lot to think about, and a lively discussion followed. Dr. Johnston will offer the full class to high school students during the February break, at the DMTC. !
