ENDOCRINOLOGYis the science of hormones, substances released by glands that regulate every cell in your body, for both men and women.

Examples of endocrine diseases: thyroid, osteoporosis, metabolic syndrome and obesity, hirsutism, menopause, pituitary and adrenal pathology, low testosterone in males, andropause and impotence, polycystic ovaries, recurrent kidney stones, irregular or lack of menstrual periods, high and low calcium, diabetes etc.

We provide a comprehensive assessment of your hormone balance, in-house hormone testing, thyroid ultrasound, and bone density.

THYROID DISEASE affects thirty million Americans, half of which do not know they have the disease. Examples: hypo and hyperthyroidism, Graves and Hashimoto disease, goiter, thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer. Each person has a different genetic set point for TSH. Thyroid problems require lifelong attention.

We are the premiere thyroid clinic in Austin, and offer the latest treatment for thyroid disease, aggressive management of thyroid cancer with radioactive iodine, and second opinion consults for thyroid surgery.

OSTEOPOROSIS is a disease in which bones become fragile and more likely to break. Osteoporosis affects one in two women and one in four men over fifty and is generally missed.

Bone fracture is the “heart attack” of the bone. New treatments reduce the risk of fracture and build new bone. A bone density test is the only way to test for osteoporosis. We have the latest bone density testing equipment in Texas, and provide instant bone metabolism, medical consultation, and treatment option.

Cosmetic Dentistry: A New Smile for New Self-ConfidenceUnderstanding the steps you can take to achieve your dream smile.

According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), 99.7 percent of all Americans believe a smile is an important social asset. People gravitate towards a beautiful smile because it radiates many positive qualities, including confidence, openness and warmth. More and more people each year undergo cosmetic dentistry procedures to attain the smile of their dreams. Before you decide to have a cosmetic dental procedure, it’s impor-tant to know more information about specific treatments and how you can improve the chances of getting the results you are looking for. Dr. Mark Sweeney, a renowned cosmetic dentist and the founder of Austin Dental Spa, explains what cosmetic dentistry is, how certain procedures can drastically improve your physical appearance and offers advice for those wanting a re-newed, beautiful smile.

What is CosMetiC dentistry?“Cosmetic dentistry includes a variety of procedures that can rejuvenate your teeth, gums and bite,” says Dr. Sweeney. At Austin Dental Spa, his dental team uses advanced treatments such as teeth whitening, porcelain veneers and gum lifting techniques to transform a patient’s smile. Dr. Sweeney offers the in-office teeth whitening methods of Zoom! Advanced Power, which can brighten teeth up to eight to 12 shades, and the KöR Whitening Deep Bleaching System for deeply stained teeth.

Porcelain veneers, Dr. Sweeney explains, have the ability to dramatically improve the aesthetics of your smile once the thin ceramic shells are bonded to the front of your teeth. Meanwhile, a

gum lift procedure can remove excess gum tissue for patients who are experiencing a gummy smile. Cosmetic dentistry can also include restorative treatments such as dental implants for patients looking to replace missing teeth or address misalignment issues.

Who is an ideal Candidate For CosMetiC dentistry treatMents?Anyone can explore the possibilities of cosmetic dentistry to enhance the natural beauty of his or her smile, Dr. Sweeney emphasizes. Based on your needs, you can talk with a dentist about removing spaces, reshaping, whitening or straight-ening your teeth.

hoW Can i Make sure i’ll get results that look natural? “It is important that patients choose a dentist with the proper experience and technical skill to maintain as much of the original tooth structure as possible. Nobody wants to have something done

over again,” Dr. Sweeney says. He also advises to look for a cosmetic dentist that will try to improve the function of your bite and teeth in addition to aesthetics. A talented dentist, Dr. Sweeney notes, will produce results that look and feel as natu-ral as your original teeth.

Can i knoW What My sMile Will look like beForehand?“The most common concern we deal with is that patients want to be sure they know what they are getting and what their smile will look like,” says Dr. Sweeney. “We are able to get very close to exactly the look the patient is going for before we ever touch their teeth.” He recommends looking for a dentist with advanced tools and technology that can provide a preview of your potential future smile with a prototype or image.

Amy Salinas, MDNow, more than ever, CT lung screening for high-risk people is very much worth it.

Current or Former Heavy Smoker?CT lung screening for cancer saves lives.

It’s commonly known that you are at a higher risk for lung cancer if you have smoked heavily during any time in your life. In fact, smoking is believed to cause up to 90 percent of lung cancer cases and lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women in the United States. The good news is that CT lung screening for high-risk people can reduce deaths from lung cancer by 20 percent compared to the traditional chest X-ray.

What is Ct lung sCreening?Computed tomography (CT) lung screening is a simple radiological test done on people that are completely symptom free as a way of finding cancer before there are any indications. CT uses special X-ray equipment and computer software to obtain multiple cross-sectional images of the soft tissues, blood vessels and bones. It can distinguish between normal and diseased tissue based on changes in size, shape and appearance of the tissue. A CT lung screening can detect cancerous lung nodules at an early stage when they are more treatable, increasing survival chances.

aM i a Candidate For Ct lung sCreening? The American Lung Association and Austin Radiological Association recommend CT lung screening if you:

R are a current or former smoker and 55 to 75 years old

R have a smoking history of at least 30 pack years (this means one pack a day for 30 years, two packs a day for 15 years, etc.)

Together, these factors put you in the highest risk group for lung cancer and screening is recommended for you. However, the risk for lung cancer is different for everyone. If you do not fall into this group, consult with your doctor to see if you might benefit from CT lung screening.

the researCh behind Ct lung sCreening. Results from the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) published in 2010 showed a 20 percent reduction in mortality from lung cancer among participants screened using CT lung screening as compared to those screened with chest X-rays. The NLST was a randomized national trial of 53,454 current or former heavy smokers who fell into the risk group mentioned above. The group was ethnically representative of the U.S. population.

What is it like getting a Ct lung sCreening? The CT scanner features a large ring that your body slowly passes through on a movable table. You may hear a series of whirring or spinning sounds as the X-ray tube and other components move inside the scanner housing. CT lung screening is completely pain free and noninvasive and does not require the use of injectable contrast media. It takes between five and 15 minutes to complete. After the exam is completed you will be able to resume your normal activities.

What do the results Mean?A “suspicious result” means that the CT scan detected something

abnormal. Abnormal findings include lung cancer or other serious conditions and also the possibility of a false positive, meaning no serious condition is present. You may need to have further diagnostic exams to find out more about the abnormal results. If you do have lung cancer, your doctor and other experts will discuss plans for treatment with you.

A “negative result” means that the scan revealed no abnormalities. This does not guarantee that you do not have lung cancer or that you will not get it. Your doctor will help you determine if and when you should be tested again.

What are the risks?CT scans do involve exposure to radiation (X-rays). But radiology is advancing rapidly and ARA’s new low-dose CT scanners allow for up to 60 percent reduction in radiation dose with improved image quality. Research has consistently shown that the benefit of early treatment and potential cure from obtaining a CT lung cancer screening outweigh the risks of the radiation involved. Plus, ARA uses best practices for lung cancer screening. Your safety is paramount.

The best way to prevent lung cancer is to never smoke or stop smoking now. If you are still smoking, talk to your doctor about ways to help you quit smoking.

Hormones and YouYour endocrinologist to the rescue.

Since hormones rule your body, have your hormonal balance assessed by an endocrinologist to optimize your health. Dr. Simone Scumpia of Austin Thyroid & Endocrinology outlines everything you need to know about hormones and their effect on the body.

horMones and endoCrinology.Endocrinology is the science of hor-mones, which affect every cell and every function in your body. The glands secreting these hormones form your endocrine system, a tightly intercon-nected system with thousands of feed-back loops. It is far more complex than any supercomputer today. Hormones control everything in your body from birth to death. Without hormones, your body cannot function. Examples of hormones: estrogen, testosterone, insulin and hormones like thyroid, cortisol, adrenal and pituitary.

What are endoCrine diseases? They are diseases caused by a malfunc-tion of one or more endocrine glands in your body. Examples: thyroid, osteopo-rosis, metabolic syndrome and obesity, hirsutism, menopause, low testosterone in males, andropause and impotence, polycystic ovaries, irregular or lack of menstrual periods, high and low calcium, diabetes.

What FaCtors aFFeCt your endoCrine systeM? Aging, other diseases, stress, environmen-tal and genetic factors do influence your endocrine system. Aging changes how hormones are produced and absorbed by your body. Genetic factors and other diseases can do the same. Stress triggers a cascade of hormones that affect your heart, kidneys and other organs. Recent research identified endocrine disrupting chemicals in our environment.

Why see an endoCrinologist? Hormone treatments must be followed by a hormone specialist (endocrinologist) the same way heart disease is followed by a heart specialist (cardiologist). An endocrinologist has years of special

training in diagnosing and treating your hormone imbalances. Endocrine diseases are often missed, since symptoms are often subtle and easy to brush aside. An endocrinolo-gist starts out with a thorough physical evaluation looking for these telltale signs, then follows up with a battery of blood and other lab tests. Often, additional highly specialized tests are involved to identify the root cause of your hormonal imbalance.

Have you seen an endocrinologist for your hormone problems?

What is thyroid disease?Thyroid disease affects 30 million Americans, yet half of them do not know they have it. It is called the “silent disease.” One in eight women will develop a thyroid disorder in their life; women are five to eight times more likely than men to develop hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism. Thyroid ailments include Graves’ and Hashimoto disease, goiter, thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer. Thyroid problems require lifelong attention. Each person has a different genetic set point for TSH, the thyroid stimulation hormone.

Do you know your TSH?

What is osteoPorosis?Osteoporosis is a disease in which bones become fragile and more likely to break. Osteoporosis affects one in two women and one in four men over the age of 50 and is generally missed. Bone fracture is considered to be the heart attack of the bone and can have major consequences on your quality of life from reduced mobility to potential loss of mobility altogether. A bone density test is the only way to test for osteopo-rosis. We perform such testing and provide consultation on bone metabo-lism and osteoporosis treatment.

Do you know your bone density?

horMone Myths debunked. The facts about some hormone myths:

bioidentical hormones are not human identical and may cause complications.

Fountain of youth hormones (otherwise known as human growth hormones) can cause serious side effects when used for anti-aging.

hCg diets (human chorionic gonadotro-pin) by themselves do not cause weight loss, but can cause irregular periods for women and breast enlargement for men.

hormone treatment of fatigue, depres-sion or anti-aging should be avoided due to many side effects it can cause.

adrenal fatigue is not a real disease, but adrenal failure is a life threatening disease.

What is oPtiMal health and biologiCal age?Medicine addresses disease treatment and prevention. Optimal health and biological age deal with your health before disease prevention or treatment. We focus on optimal health, the ideal yet achievable health of your body as you reach middle age and beyond. Our specialized equipment allows us to measure and evaluate your biological age, a measure of how well or poorly your body is functioning relative to your actual calendar age. Biological age is a composite of several “ages” such as brain age, bone age, heart age and vessel age. Optimal health focuses on your wellness before disease can be identified; it is a step before disease prevention and does improve the quality of your life.

Have you had your biological age tested for your optimal health assessment?

Chris W. Brennig, MD“Varicose veins can cause clinically significant symptoms including pain, swelling, blood clots and skin breakdown.”

Austin Vein Institute 512.346.2727, veinaustin.com

Dr. Chris Brennig is a board certified vascular surgeon and the founder of the Austin Vein Institute.

Ask an Expert

Varicose Vein Treatment and PregnancyTreating varicose veins can help ease dis-comfort and pain during pregnancy.

When left untreated, varicose or spider veins can make pregnancy even more uncomfortable. Dr. Chris Brennig, founder of Austin Vein Institute, shares treatment options for women with vein damage. Dr. Brennig offers sage advice and urges women to think about evaluation before or between pregnancies in order to supply better health and happiness to the legs supporting their baby bump.

What is iMPortant to knoW about variCose veins?Number one: Varicose veins can cause clinically significant symptoms including pain, swelling, blood clots and skin breakdown. Number two: They get worse with time if left untreated. Number three: Treatment is safe and effective with minimal down time. All treatments are performed in our office with a local lidocaine (common skin anesthetic). Most treatments take less than an hour.

What are CoMMon MisConCeP-tions surrounding variCose-vein treatMent With regards to PregnanCy?There’s a lot of misinformation suggesting patients wait until they are certain that they’ve finished having children before they treat their varicose veins. This is false. With each pregnancy, varicose veins will get significantly worse. By treating them prior to future pregnancies, the problem may be eliminated.

Another common misconception is that varicose vein treatment is cosmetic. That’s not true. Varicose veins are certainly often visually unappealing, but they are also unhealthy and will continue to cause worsening health problems if left untreated.

What oPtions do Pregnant WoMen have?If you have varicose veins, the earlier you get evaluated, the sooner treatment can be completed. We don’t typically

treat varicose veins during pregnancy, but we do treat patients between pregnancies or before they decide to get pregnant. We see a lot of women during pregnancy due to leg swelling, leg pain and/or blood clots in their varicose veins. We help them manage these conditions safely so that they feel better and can focus on their preg-nancy instead of painful leg veins.

Will insuranCe Cover My treatMent? Insurance plans typically cover evalua-tion and treatment of varicose veins because the medical community has long recognized varicose veins as a significant health problem. It is also widely accepted that varicose veins worsen when left untreated.

Who should treat variCose veins?Leg veins are an important part of your body’s vascular system. Vein treatments from an inexperienced or less knowl-edgeable provider may significantly increase the likelihood of misdiagnosis, over-diagnosis or potentially dangerous medical misadventures.

It is important to seek care from a physician with a proven track record as an experienced expert in the field of vein and vascular care. An established reputation of expertise in the field as well as proven success in treating not just cosmetic but also complex vein conditions should be reassuring for patients seeking care. Finally, it is important to confirm exactly who will be performing your treatments. Patients should not have to settle for lower-level providers or substitute physicians perform-ing their vein treatments.

Why are board CertiFied vasCular surgeons Consid-ered exPerts in the Care oF vein disorders like variCose veins? For decades, board certified vascular surgeons have been recognized as some of the leading medical experts dedicated to comprehensive evaluation, care and treatment of vein and vascular conditions including varicose veins.

To become a board certified vascular surgeon I completed a five-year general surgery residency and an additional two-year specialized vascular surgery fellowship at the Tufts Medical Center in

Boston. In 2006 I was recruited from Boston back to Austin by St. David’s HealthCare to help provide exceptional vascular care to the people of Central Texas. I was also recently honored as one of Austin’s best doctors by Austin Monthly magazine in 2013.

hoW does treatMent Work? I personally perform all vein treatments at the Austin Vein Institute. Your treatments will never be passed to a lower level provider or a substitute physician. The key to excellent care is having an ex-tremely qualified evaluation by a true expert in the field of vascular and vein care. Following accurate diagnosis and treatment planning I use the latest and safest treatment modalities to care for all of my patients.

What is the reCovery ProCess? There’s not much to the recovery process. Patients wear support stockings for approximately seven days following most treatments. We want patients to remain active, walk and exercise after treatments so there’s no real downtime. Most normal activities can be resumed immediately following treatment.

Alicia Zander, RN, NP-CCommUnityCare has seen fewer pre-term labors and deliveries in the women who participate in Centering Pregnancy groups.

Centering PregnancyMothers-to-be get together in groups at CommUnityCare to receive pre-natal care, education and social support.

There are 25 CommUnityCare Health Centers in the Austin area, providing health and dental care to residents of Travis County. Centering Pregnancy is one of the nationally accredited programs they offer.

Since 2007, CommUnityCare has been facilitating Centering Pregnancy programs. These patient-centered groups involve the women in every way. Each group meeting includes a time for socialization, education, discussion and health care.

Alicia Zander, a licensed nurse practitioner who works with the Centering groups says, “Centering works to build social support. It really involves people in their own health care, and they set their own goals. It’s a lot of fun.”

Fun is important to Zander, and she thinks that’s part of what women enjoy about the groups. Zander says, “It’s great for the patients because it’s a lot more egalitarian and patient-centered. You affect change and affect people’s lives if you can relate to them on a personal level and make them laugh. It’s a much more down-to-earth way to approach health care.”

Centering PregnanCy grouPs helP MoMs helP theMselves and eaCh other.Centering Pregnancy has been generously funded from the beginning by the March of Dimes, an organization devoted to healthy pregnancies and most recently has received additional dollars from DSRIP (the Delivery System Reform Incentive Payments). Centering Pregnancy groups share this goal.

Each group consists of eight to 10 women who share the same due date month. They meet 10 times during their pregnancy. The group meets in a space that has a TV, video monitor, books and videos for moms, a food area, a kids’ play area and a space off to the side where the women receive their routine pre-natal health care.

When a woman gets to a meeting, she weighs herself and checks her own blood pressure. The meetings always begin with a welcoming activity and a time for socializing. The women come together as a group to discuss topics like nutrition, healthy relationships, preparing for labor, post-partum depression or other pregnancy and family-related topics. The group leader facilitates the discussion, clarifying information as needed and encouraging group members to share their own experiences and opinions.

“The idea is that women know their own bodies, and they are, in general, a wealth of knowledge for each other,” says Zander.

Zander says she knew the program was successful when she got a call from a mom who had just had her third baby. She had experienced post-partum depression with her two previous pregnancies. At her six-week post-partum checkup, she told Zander, “I’ve actually been kind of depressed, but then I just called up some of the girls from the group and had them over.” Zander says the group helps women to feel less isolated.

grouP MeMbers have a loWer Pre-terM labor and delivery rate.CommUnityCare has seen fewer pre-term labors and deliveries in the women who participate in Centering Pregnancy groups. Nationally, the pre-term labor rate is 11.7 percent* and in Texas it’s 12.8 percent* but, so far, women who participate in the group

only have a 4.8 percent pre-term labor and delivery rate. Zander says, “This is beneficial in many ways. One, for moms who’ve had babies pre-term, it can be wrenching to be apart from your baby. Two, it’s also hard to breast feed and bond with baby, and pre-term babies often have health problems. It’s also a huge driver of health care costs.”

Zander is proud of the fact that 99 percent of the women in these groups come out of the hospital breastfeeding their baby. She also offers this example of the groups’ success: “We had one mom in our early groups who had been pregnant five times, and she’d had four pre-term labors and never breast fed, and after Centering Pregnancy she had a healthy term baby and breast fed for more than a year.”

Centering Parenting Provides inFants With Care until tWo years oF age.Centering Parenting groups work much the same way as Centering Pregnancy. Six to eight mothers with babies born around the same time meet as a group, and the babies receive routine well-child care visits and vaccines. Dental Health GuideThe do’s and don’ts of caring for your teeth.

When you are choosing a dentist, your personal goals for the health of your teeth and mouth should be the basis for making your decision. Look for a dentist who has experience with the services you are seeking. Most importantly, choose an office with a caring staff that takes the time to really listen to what you want. The Hills Dental Spa not only offers a relaxing and comfortable experience but also helps us understand the common questions and concerns when it comes to dentistry and the care of your teeth.

does Whitening daMage teeth?Studies have shown that when properly done on patients with no active decay, there is no damage. According to the American Dental Association, damage to teeth after whitening can occur with overuse of at-home whitening systems as these are administered without the supervision of a dental professional. Damage could also occur in the enamel if inferior whitening solutions are used. Some patients experience sensitivity in their teeth or irritation to the gums for a short time immediately after treatment; however, symptoms usually resolve quickly and no permanent damage occurs.

iF My teeth don’t hurt, Why should i have any dental treatMent? Dental pain is often referred to as the worst kind of pain and often, painful dental emergencies occur in the middle of the night or on a weekend. Addressing tooth decay early, before you have pain in a tooth, is the best possible thing you can do to keep your teeth healthy and functional. Typically, by the time you have a toothache, the cost of dental care is significantly higher because the treatment is more aggressive. A small

cavity can be painlessly removed with a quick and inexpensive filling, but left untreated, that same cavity grows and goes deeper into the tooth. By waiting until it hurts, the decay can expand into the nerve and may require a root canal, or even extraction of the tooth. These procedures often require multiple appointments to get you restored back to health. The same can be said for gum disease—symptoms are “silent” until a very serious and painful event occurs. Being proactive, instead of reactive, makes treatment and its outcome more beneficial and longer lasting.

hoW oFten do i really need a dental Cleaning?Every person is different, so the answer varies throughout your life due to changes in habits, increases in stress levels and health conditions, which can influence the health of your mouth. Most healthy patients who brush and floss regularly and have no active cavities will benefit from professional hygiene cleanings twice a year to remove any buildup that cannot be reached with a toothbrush and floss. If you have had bone loss you may require a cleaning every three to five months to keep your mouth healthy and prevent bacteria from causing more bone loss, which can lead to tooth loss. Once the bone is lost, it will require more frequent cleanings to ensure the disease process does not

worsen the condition of your bone and gums. Your hygienist and dentist will develop a plan that is best for keeping your mouth healthy.

hoW oFten do CroWns, veneers and Fillings last? While the answer varies person to person, there are certain things you can do to ensure that your dental treatments will last as long as possible. First, keep your regular cleaning appointments. This will keep the edges of your restorations cleaner and healthier than you are capable of doing at home. Second, wear a night guard or bite guard. If you grind and clench, you are placing more forces on your dental work, which may cause it to wear out sooner, decreasing longevity. Similar to tires on your car, there is only so much use and “tread-life” to your natural teeth and dental work as well. Habits, such as crunching ice, chewing fingernails, clenching teeth when you are stressed or grinding teeth in your sleep, all effect longevity. Next, brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and floss either in the morning or at night. Finally, if your teeth are crooked and uneven, you are placing more stress on your teeth during normal chewing. It will also be more difficult for you to keep your teeth clean. By straightening your teeth and wearing a retainer to keep things in alignment, you will be able to keep your teeth cleaner at home and have less chance of fracturing a crown, filling or tooth.

Lisa M. Jukes, MDHeavy menstruation and severe cramps should be evaluated further by a specialist.

Painful Periods Dr. Lisa M. Jukes outlines the causes and treatment options for heavy menstruation and agonizing cramps.

Most women experience discomfort when Aunt Flo comes to visit. However, there are varying degrees of pain associated with menstruating, as it affects women differently depending on the symptoms and causes. Heavy menstruation and severe cramps not alleviated by healthy lifestyle and use of over-the-counter pain relievers should be evaluated further by a specialist. When your body doesn’t respond to these tactics, it could potentially be more serious and even require surgery. Endometriosis, adenomyosis, uterine fibroid tumors, ovarian cysts and prolapse are some of the common diagnoses for women suffering from pelvic pain and/or abnormal bleeding.

What are the signs oF an abnorMal Period? One sign is pain that doesn’t respond to Motrin, or [the patient] has to dose frequently and take several Motrin to be able to get relief and go about their normal activity. As far as unusually heavy bleed-ing, changing a Kotex every hour or two, that would be considered not normal. Staining bed clothes at night or having to get up a couple times in the night to change a Kotex would also be considered not normal.

If your pain does not respond to various therapies (healthy diet, exercise, pain relievers, birth control), if you are bleeding between periods, experiencing a heavy flow or if your menstrual cycle is interfer-ing with your quality of life, preventing you from going to work or leaving the house, then it is time to seek help from a women’s health professional. Why do heavy Menstruation and CraMPs oCCur? Painful menstrual cycles can occur as young as the early teenage years, but tend to peak in a woman’s 20s and 30s. The

painful symptoms typically go away with pregnancy and then oftentimes return for women in their 40s.

Pregnancy can provide relief of symptoms from endometriosis and pelvic pain for several years.

Endometriosis is a condition in which endometrial type cells have implanted outside the uterus, causing severe cramps, abnormal bleeding and other pain, including pain with intercourse.

Endometriosis can affect at least 25 percent of women. It can be genetic or even associated with congenital uterine anomalies. There’s a condition related to endometriosis called adenomyosis and that’s a common reason for severe menstrual cramps as well as heavy bleeding. It’s a condition where the endometrial lining has implanted in the muscle wall of the uterus.

Pain can also be caused by uterine fibroids and can cause bleeding problems if the fibroid is affecting the lining of the uterus. Fibroids are benign, non-cancer-ous, fibrous-like tumors in the myometrium (muscle layer of the uterus).

Pelvic pain should be further investi-gated to assure that it is not related to a gastrointestinal, urologic or musculoskel-etal disorder. Heavy bleeding can even start with a young woman’s first few menses. Up to 25 percent of these adolescents may have a hereditary bleeding disorder, which can be deter-mined by simple blood work. Later on,

heavy bleeding, bleeding between cycles or with intercourse can be secondary to overgrowth of the endometrium, uterine polyps, fibroids or adenomyosis.

What are the treatMent oPtions? The first step would be to see how the body responds to pain relievers and possibly hormonal contraceptives. If the body is not responding, the next step is evaluation and possible ultrasound in order to determine the etiology.

The treatment depends on what we find and whether that person wants to have children or has completed their family. If the findings are suggestive of endometrio-sis based on history and physical exam, then we typically proceed with a laparos-copy, which, in my experience, I prefer using da Vinci surgery.

The da Vinci robotic system gives me 3-D visualization, better magnification and use of instruments that have more precise movements. Laparoscopy allows me to see into the abdomen through small incisions in order to diagnose what is causing the pain or bleeding. I am now able to perform more complicated, minimally invasive surgeries rather than making large abdominal incisions, including single-site umbilical laparoscopic surgery. With da Vinci, patients experi-ence less pain, less risk of infection and scarring, and shorter recovery time, among many other benefits.

Pregnancy 101Insight on the process of pregnancy and delivery.

Renaissance Women’s Group was formed in 1995 specifically to provide high quality, personalized Ob/Gyn care to women. With 10 physicians who are all trained as Ob/Gyn special-ists, each expert provides both routine and high risk pregnancy care. Renaissance has delivered tens of thousands of babies, yet are just as excited to help deliver your baby as they were with their first delivery. Seeing each patient and each preg-nancy as a time to provide individual-ized, attentive high quality care, Renaissance also provides gynecol-ogy care for patients from teenage years through menopause and wants to be your doctor for your entire life.

Renaissance Women’s Group outlines everything you need to know about pregnancy and delivering your baby safely and comfortably.

What should i knoW about PreConCePtion Care? If you are considering pregnancy, we urge you to discuss this with your doctor at your routine annual appointment, or if needed, a separate preconception appointment. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is very important for a success-ful pregnancy, and we can address any special needs easily.

What hosPital do you reCoM-Mend For delivery? We recommend the St. David’s Women’s Center of Texas at North Austin Medical Center. The center is now the largest maternity hospital in Central Texas with the most annual deliveries. This volume provides us with the hospital and sub-specialist support we need in virtually all situations, from low risk routine natural deliveries to the highest risk problem pregnancy. At the same time, this facility is known for providing the personalized caring attention that we demand for our patients from a hospital facility.

hoW should i PrePare For birth? We encourage prepared, educated childbirth, and whether you choose a natural birth plan or desire some form of anesthesia, make sure your Ob/Gyn is

working closely with you to achieve your personal goals and birth plans. A high percentage of patients at Renaissance deliver naturally, but 24/7 in-hospi-tal availability of anesthesia for those who choose it or for emergencies is a real plus. It’s also important to know your options for vaginal delivery after a C-section if that is in your plan and fits safety criteria. Renaissance offers childbirth educational classes through our practice taught by our nursing staff.

What iF i have a ProbleM that Makes Me high risk? Ensure that your doctor and delivery team has specialized training in both routine and high-risk pregnancy care. At Renaissance, we frequently care for women with diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid issues and other underlying medical conditions that can complicate pregnancy. Our group is capable of handling most pregnancy complications, however if additional help is needed, we work closely with the maternal fetal medicine sub-specialists at North Austin.

i’M an older MoM. What do you reCoMMend For genetiC Coun-seling and testing? We recommend a number of options for all patients, regardless of age, for screening and/or diagnosis for genetic problems, including the new maternal serum fetal DNA test for chromosome abnormalities. Dr. Byron G. Darby has long specialized in prenatal diagnosis and ultrasound, and we also have a certified genetic counselor on staff for patients with complicated genetic issues.

What iF i have trouble beCoM-ing Pregnant? We will be happy to work with you to achieve pregnancy. Our group provides basic fertility workups and care, and most patients can conceive with methods that we employ in our practice. If more advanced fertility treatments are needed, we work closely with board certified repro-ductive fertility subspecialists.

other renaissanCe WoMen’s grouP serviCes. Our physicians are trained not only to deliver babies, but to provide modern up to date gynecology care. If you need a birth control method, we have a number of options, including oral contraceptives and long acting reversible contraceptive devices including IUDs. If you desire permanent birth control, we usually utilize the Essure tubal occlusion procedure, done as an outpatient without incisions. For menstrual issues, we have a number of non-surgical methods, but if necessary we can perform outpatient endometrial ablation. Our approach to gynecologic problems is conservative, but if surgical methods are needed, all of our physicians are highly trained in minimally invasive surgical methods. Our group was the first in Austin to have all physicians certified to perform the da Vinci robotic surgery, and we achieve close to a 100 percent “closed” or minimally invasive rate on all surgeries, allowing virtually all cases to be outpatient or one night hospital stays.

Important Testing for WomenAwareness, prevention and treat-ment for breast and bone health.

As technology continues developing in the arena of women’s health, St. David’s HealthCare is proud to take part in that discussion, providing important testing options and serving as a resource to women in Central Texas. There are two important examinations women who are 40 and older should know about and take action to get tested for. Three-dimensional (3-D) mammography helps to detect cancers in women earlier, while bone mineral density testing helps determine a patient’s bone health. Dr. Elizabeth Moorehead and Dr. Mark D. Akin explain why these tests are impor-tant for your health.

What is 3-d MaMMograPhy teChnology? The latest advancement in mammogram technology to benefit women, 3-D mammography offers a comfortable design and delivers exceptionally sharp breast images, as well as superior screening and diagnostic performance. Similar to a traditional two-dimensional (2-D) exam, the 3-D mammography experience captures multiple, low-dose images of the breast from different angles which are then used to produce a series of 1-millimeter thick slices that can be viewed as a 3-D reconstruction of the breast. Only taking a few minutes more than a traditional mammogram, the 3-D exam allows physicians to see breast tissue in greater detail than ever before.

What are the beneFits oF a 3-d MaMMograM versus a traditional MaMMograM?Because a 3-D exam allows a physician to see the different layers of breast tissue without as much overlap as with a traditional mammogram, it helps reduce false positive rates, which minimizes the chance that a patient will be asked to return for follow-up tests. Recent studies show the use of 3-D mammography, combined with conventional 2-D imag-ing, has a significantly higher cancer

detection rate than conventional 2-D mammography alone. All women may benefit from the use of 3-D mammography, but the technology is particu-larly effective for women with dense breasts.

When and hoW oFten should a WoMan go in For a MaMMograM?By age 40, a woman should schedule her first mammogram and should return once every year following for the rest of her life. Depending on family history and if a first-degree relative has been diagnosed with breast cancer, a women should consult with her doctor on mammogram examination at an earlier age. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death among women, and statistics indicate that one in eight women will develop breast cancer sometime in her lifetime. The stage at which breast cancer is detected influ-ences a woman’s chance of survival, so it’s necessary to schedule yearly exams. Paving the way for breast cancer detection, 3-D mammography can help detect cancers earlier and may improve a patient’s outcome.

What is bone Mineral density (bMd) testing and Why is it iMPortant?A bone mineral density test shows the amount of bone a person has in the hip, spine and sometimes other bones, and through the use of dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), the density of bones or the level of bone mass within the body is measured. This testing is the best possible way to determine your bone health and can identify low bone mass (osteopenia), osteoporosis and can determine your risk for bone fractures. For those who do have osteoporosis, the test also measures your response to osteoporosis treatment. During the test, a patient lies underneath a DXA scanner that produces two X-ray beams, each with different energy levels, and together

these beams scan the bones to deter-mine their thickness. The test takes 15 minutes to complete, is painless and emits less radiation exposure than a traditional chest X-ray.

When and hoW oFten should a WoMan go in For a bMd test?Because most women reach maximum bone density by age 35, testing for low bone density is not required until the age of 50 or by menopause. After an initial BMD test is complete and your results are within normal range, the test should be repeated every three years. In some cases, women may need to repeat testing sooner. Women who suffer from estrogen, calcium or vitamin D deficien-cy, or those who have undergone chemo-therapy, are at a greater risk for low bone density and should undergo BMD testing sooner than the recommended age. To learn more about BMD testing, women should talk with their gynecologist or primary care physician during an annual check up.

The Breast Center at St. David’s Medical Center offers 3-D mammography and the Women’s Center of Texas at St. David’s North Austin Medical Center provides a range of treatment testing and options for women in the area of bone mineral density testing, among other services.

Fertility What you need to know about infertility and when to seek help.

After an infertility diagnosis, finding answers and hope becomes paramount to the one out of seven couples in this country faced with this disease. Texas Fertility Center (TFC) in Austin, Round Rock and San Antonio routinely fields questions about the scope of services they offer, when to seek advanced treatment and the capabilities of the physicians that represent the practice with over 100 years of combined experience.

Most couples (85 to 88 percent) will become pregnant after one year of unprotected intercourse. The doctors at TFC suggest you consider partnering with a specialist after 12 months of trying unsuccessfully if you are 35 or younger. Women over 35 should seek higher-level care after only six months of trying because maternal age negatively impacts egg quality and quantity.

are there diFFerenCes be-tWeen an rei and an ob/gyn? Fertility specialists have performed fellowships in reproductive medicine and are board certified in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI). Achieving this level of expertise requires an additional three years of formal training beyond an Ob/Gyn residency. At TFC, our REIs do not deliver babies or perform office gynecology. Instead, they focus on treating infertility and recurrent pregnancy loss, and performing complex laparoscop-ic, hysteroscopic and robotic surgeries to correct anatomic barriers to pregnancy.

do i only need to see an rei For advanCed Fertility ser-viCes, suCh as in vitro Fertil-iZation? Actually, only 25 percent of couples need in vitro fertilization (IVF). Your doctor should perform a comprehensive evalua-tion of both the man and the woman and develop an individualized treatment plan for each couple. Most will achieve preg-nancy with minimally invasive treatment options, such as ovulation induction or

intrauterine insemination. At TFC, we counsel patients about simple lifestyle changes that can boost their fertility, incorpo-rating a mind-body approach to treatment.

does Fertility treatMent Work? A large indepen-dent study conducted by William M. Mercer in 1997 demonstrated that 85 to 88 percent of women who saw a board certified REI and followed his or her treatment plan successfully conceived.

What should i look For in a Fertility CliniC? You want to partner with a practice comprised of board certified REIs who are experienced, well regarded locally and active in the global medical community. As Central Texas’ largest fertility center, we have internationally recognized physicians, including the only REIs in Austin to be recognized by Best Doctors in America.

You should check to ensure that you will have access to state-of-the-art facilities and an accredited IVF lab. At TFC, our onsite laboratories are certified by SART, CLIA and CAP.

You should also inquire about how the practice contributes to the field of reproductive medicine. Our physicians are the only REIs on faculty at the new University of Texas at Austin Medical School. We travel regularly to Washington DC to lobby Congress in support of the pending Family Act. We also helped establish the Fertility Foundation of Texas to raise awareness about infertility as a treatable medical disease, provide grants to qualifying patients and fund infertility research. In addition to all of this, we also sponsor local events focused on women’s health and wellness.

Finally, you should verify that your fertility center conducts significant medical research. TFC regularly presents groundbreaking research at national and international fertility society meetings. We

also publish our research and have over 100 publications in leading peer reviewed medical journals and textbooks. Contact our research department or read more on our website about our past and ongoing studies and clinical trials.

What are treatMent oPtions For inFertility? Although we work in close partnership with your Ob/Gyn, our board certified fertility specialists at TFC have extensive specialized training in complicated laparoscopy for endometriosis, fibroids and pelvic adhesions, and operative hysteroscopy for fibroids, intrauterine adhesions and blocked fallopian tubes.

We are also trained in robotic surgery, and recommend it when we believe it can truly help our patients. We participated in the clinical trials of all surgical adhesion preventatives currently used in the U.S., and have testified before the FDA to help secure approval for these important surgical products.

The Health Benefits of Compression HosieryWhat you may not know about the woman’s clothing staple.

What is CoMPression hosiery?Compression stockings, or hosiery, are spandex garments compressing the limbs, offering pressure against our legs, reducing the diameter of distended veins and causing an increase of healthy blood flow, velocity and heart valve effectiveness. Compression hosiery is available in a range of graduated levels of compres-sion depending on the needs and use of them. Compression levels start from 10 to 15 mm Hg and continue up to 30 to 40 mm Hg—the lowest level providing lighter pressure, with the higher level being the tightest. Your medical professional can recommend the compression grade needed to support you during work or play.

Most young people are not aware of the benefits of compression hosiery as our bodies do not visibly or physically indicate we need that type of support until we age. The miscon-ception is that compression and support products are only meant for the elderly.

What are the health beneFits? The body will experience immediate improvement as one of the health benefits of compression hosiery includes increased blood circulation, helping oxygen levels balance body function more naturally without chemicals or drug intake. Compres-sion garments gently and comfortably squeeze the areas of your body and promote the movement of blood upward and inward to dramatically prevent swelling and lessen the risk of blood clots.

Who should use CoMPression hosiery? Anyone that stands or sits for long periods of time that also experiences a burning sensation or limb fatigue over time will benefit from compres-sion hosiery. Exam-ples of who can benefit from compres-sion hosiery in the workplace include hairdressers, teach-ers, health care professionals, chefs, retail salespeople, travelers, etc. It is also recommended to wear compression garments during exercise to aid in muscle recovery. Some women love the feeling of compres-sion during aerobics as it makes them feel more compact and efficient during workouts.

are there any harMFul side eFFeCts? Medical research reports only positive effects and to date has not found any negative side effects from wearing compression hosiery or other compression gear. You should always consult a physician if you have any serious health issues to determine the right fit for your needs.

What is diFFerent about traMPs CoMPression hosiery versus other brands? Tramps Fashion Compression Hosiery offers modern style and sensible fit—styles that are not available on the market. For instance, the high waisted style of The Bryanna pro-vides more comfort and better shape since it was made specifically not to cinch the waist. The Jocelynne is a

style that is designed to wear under any hip-hugging garments to allow your compression undergarment not to show a few inches above the natural hip hugger style line. The Emily is a style for moms-to-be, a style that benefits all pregnant women to help blood flow with comfort in the panty and tummy area.

Our unique open toe thong design provides more movement without the discomfort of a tightly closed com-pressed toe, which has led to toe disfigurement in many cases of long term use. Tramps Compression Hosiery’s breathable spandex blended fabric with graduated compression releases tension to the covered areas of the legs, from firm to comfortable compression, which forms naturally to your body shape.

Stroke Alert Know the facts so you can respond rapidly and effectively.

Knowing the risks, signs and symptoms of stroke can save lives. Stroke is the leading cause of serious, long-term disability and the third leading cause of death in the United States. Each year, nearly 800,000 people will suffer from stroke and 140,000 people will die from stroke.

What exaCtly is a stroke or “brain attaCk?”A stroke is a sudden infarct or area of dead tissue resulting from failure of blood supply to the brain, spinal cord or eye causing loss of function. It is equivalent to a heart attack, only it occurs in the brain and instead of destruction of heart muscle, brain tissue dies. Moreover, nearly two million brain cells (neurons) die each minute during a stroke. Hence, just as rapid treatment to re-establish blood flow is key in a heart attack, time is key for the brain.

Nearly 90 percent of strokes are caused by a blockage of blood supply, cutting off oxygen supply to cells, while 10 percent are due to bleeding (hemorrhagic strokes). Blockage of an artery restricts blood, oxygen and nutrient supply to brain cells, causing an ischemic stroke. Ischemic strokes usually occur from a clot which formed elsewhere (e.g. the heart) or forms within an artery and then breaks off and travels through the bloodstream until it lodges and blocks a vessel to the brain (or spinal cord or eye).

Clots which form in large arteries (vessels carrying oxygenated blood from the heart) can form within areas with buildup of cholesterol, fat and other products in the walls of arteries, causing either a clot that blocks the artery at that site (called a thrombus) or the clot can break off, travel and block the artery in the brain (embolic stroke).

Finally, conditions such as chronic high blood pressure (hypertension) can cause thickening of small vessels in the brain that can narrow and cut-off supply to smaller but often critical areas of the brain. Other strokes may not be readily detected because the unaffected brain

areas compensate (known as a “silent stroke”). If the blood supply is restored and all deficits clear within an hour, the term Transient Ischemic Attack or TIA is used (though brain images would be needed to determine that the ischemia was truly transient and that no tissue death or infarct occurred).

hoW do i knoW iF i aM or a loved one is having a “brain attaCk” or stroke?Stroke symptoms will depend on the part of the brain deprived of blood supply. Common symptoms or signs include the following:R Sudden numbness, tingling and/or clumsiness or weakness of face (facial droop or slurred speech), hand, arm and/or leg (especially on one side of body).R Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes.R Sudden dizziness with nausea, loss of balance or coordination.R Sudden unusual and severe headache (hemorrhagic stroke).R Sudden difficulty with speech, expressing thoughts, understanding language, or confusion.Strokes not only occur in a variety of ways, but they may also stutter, that is to say, symptoms may seem to be resolving then worsening again due to blood vessel obstruction. It is therefore critical to not wait and hope symptoms subside but act fast to treat and prevent death or disability.

transient isCheMiC attaCk (tia): a CritiCal oPPortunity. Stroke and TIA represent conditions within the spectrum of brain ischemia—a TIA may be viewed as the equivalent of angina of the brain. About 500,000 people have TIAs in the U.S. every year, though this is likely underestimated as symptoms may be ignored and underreported.

Symptoms typically last less than one hour; a third of those with symptoms lasting up to 24 hours have actual brain infarcts (tissue death). Studies suggest risks of stroke after TIAs exceeds 10 percent in 90 days; up to half of these persons will have a stroke after a TIA within two days. Hence, urgent work-up for the underlying cause(s) of TIAs offers an opportunity to prevent permanent disability or death. These studies include blood tests, imaging studies of the brain and blood vessels and an echocardiogram, all of which can be performed expediently during hospital observation after a TIA.

hoW Can stroke be Prevented or treated?Major risk factors for stroke include prior strokes, poorly controlled hypertension, diabetes, smoking, high cholesterol, obesity or sedentary lifestyle, alcohol abuse, atrial fibrillation and other heart disease. Most of these risks can be successfully modified and managed. Moreover, rapid treatment of a stroke within four and a half hours with clot-busting medication can significantly help outcomes.

Laser Assisted Cataract SurgeryWestlake Eye Specialists explain the advancements in cataract surgery.

Cataract surgery is an inevitable part of the aging process given our increase in life expectancy as well as the desire for an active lifestyle necessitating good vision. Cataracts affect more than half of Americans over age 65. Gone are the days when cataract surgery was an inpatient hospital ordeal. Today, this procedure has become streamlined and incredibly sophisticated. The latest of these technological advances is laser assisted cataract surgery.

What is a CataraCt?A cataract is clouding or yellowing of our own natural lens inside our eye. This occurs slowly as we age as a result of protein buildup in the lens. Cataracts prevent the passing of light to the inside of the eye and cause glare and loss of vision as a result. Common symptoms include difficulty with night vision, driving (glare from headlights) and reading. Fortunately, this is a totally curable condition with outpatient surgery.

What does the surgery entail?Cataract surgery is an outpatient procedure that can be as short as 15 to 20 minutes long. The entire lens is removed through micro-incisions and replaced with an artificial lens implant made of acrylic that usually does not have to be replaced. Surgery is

performed under IV sedation one eye at a time, and once a cataract is removed, it never grows back.

What is laser CataraCt surgery?Until recently, cataract surgery was always performed with a blade. Now we have the ability to use femtosecond lasers, similar to Lasik, to assist in cataract surgery. The laser measures the patient’s eye shape prior to the procedure and customizes the incisions as a result. The incisions are then constructed with the help of the laser computer and without a blade. Usually, the entire laser treatment is finished under 30 seconds! In that time, the physician is able to create up to six different incisions to aid with the surgery.

Why Choose laser? The laser procedure has many benefits, making it a great tool to use during surgery. Each treatment consists of an ultrasound, which helps customize incisions specifically to each patient. The incisions are then constructed in a very predictable fashion with great accuracy and seal incredibly well as a result. The laser is also effective in treating astigmatism. While blade surgery has a hard time placing corrective incisions at the right depth, the laser is able to measure the patient’s cornea accurately and place the incisions at the perfect

depth. Astigmatism is managed quite effectively as a result. Finally, the lens implant is held in position more effectively due to the accuracy of the laser.

WhiCh laser is the best?Westlake Eye Specialists has had great results with the LenSx laser. This particular laser creates excellent corneal incisions and has led the way in FDA approval and software upgrades. In addition, the support staff for this laser is outstanding and ensures that it is in perfect condition. Performing well over 500 laser surgeries to date, Westlake Eye strives to deliver cutting edge technology to patients and the laser has been a great addition to our practice.

Caroline Jones, DMD Get to Know Dr. Jones:Great American Smiles

11615 Angus Road, Wind River Building Austin, TX 78759 512.345.9995greatamericansmiles.com

Dr. Caroline Jones came to dentistry with the sole purpose of making people smile. But after observing firsthand the exorbitant prices of dental procedures and the lack of good dental health benefits, she knew that something needed to be done to ensure that her patients were receiving the best treatment at the best possible cost.

Searching for the perfect solution, Dr. Jones came up with an innovative system that may revolutionize the dental industry: Great American Smiles, a membership program where the patient pays one annual fee and the needed services are provided.

An Austin first, her tier-based dental program includes different levels of memberships that you can join based on your unique needs, so you can ensure that your dental expenses are always consistent.

Great American Smiles offers comprehensive dentistry from small dental fillings to full mouth restoration (a lifetime smile make-over). For as little as $49 a month the health of your teeth can be covered for the rest of your life.

Some of the memberships also include whitening, veneers and aesthetic procedures. Exams are complimentary.

The boutique-style practice also offers flexible office hours. It opens early and closes late, which means that if you need a seven o’clock appointment on a Thursday night, a dentist is going to be there for you (Saturday services by appointment).

b Dr. Jones is originally from South Carolina and she obtained her dental degree at the Medical University of South Carolina in 1995. She moved to Austin four years ago for the brisket.

b She loves volunteering and she actively supports the PTSA, Vandegrift High School Athletic Booster Club and VHS Theater.

b Dr. Jones and her dental team volunteer as a group every third week of the month, with an understanding that volunteering is a great way to give back to the community. Additionally, she gives 10 percent of Great American Smiles profits to community projects.

b Dr. Jones also believes in living lightly, being kind and using resources in a wise and efficient manner.

"Without a great smile you can't really give your best to the world. You're always hold-ing back a little bit. And smiling is good, it releases endorphins which makes you instantly feel better.” – Dr. Caroline Jones

I’ve always said that breast reconstruction and cosmetic surgery are intimately intertwined and that you don’t have to accept a different standard of beauty because you’ve previously had cancer. Those are my core beliefs—the very cornerstones of my philosophy regarding your reconstruction experience.  As a female surgeon with fellowship training in microsurgery and reconstructive surgery, I blend both my expertise from University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and my cosmetic surgery experience from UT Southwestern Medical Center, to offer every patient a balanced and beautiful cosmetic result.

When considering reconstruction, it’s important that we participate in an open dialogue. I’m actually learning about you during this process as much as I’m advising you, because let’s face it, there are no cookie-cutter reconstructions. Every patient is unique, and your individuality affects your final outcome. That’s why it’s my belief that a consultation should be exactly that—an ongoing conversation resulting in the refinement of ideas and options before proceeding with your treatment plan.

I find my breast cancer patients to be inspiring—your tenacity and resilience challenge me to find better, more aesthetic solutions for you. Currently, I offer the full range of reconstructive options including DIEP f laps, implant-based reconstructions, oncoplastic procedures, fat grafting, and additional revisions and refinements. I also specialize in other cosmetic procedures such as breast augmentation and reduction, body contouring, tummy tucks and mommy makeovers.

What advice would you give a newly diagnosed patient?Allow yourself a couple of weeks to assemble a treatment team, and consult a plastic surgeon before you begin treatment. The initial panic is overwhelming, but rushing can result in mistakes that you’ll regret later.

What’s a common misconception in the reconstruction process?By law, if you’ve had a mastectomy and/or a lumpectomy, you cannot be denied reconstructive coverage by your insurance provider. The Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act guarantees reconstruction and revisions for the duration of your lifetime, so it’s never too late to begin reconstruction or to refine one that does not satisfy you.

What personal qualities serve you best as a surgeon? My need to be challenged and my compassion for my patients keeps me on the cutting edge of medicine, seeking the safest and best methods to help them regain their sense of self after facing the devastation of cancer.

A visit to Dr. AnnMarie Olson’s office will reinforce what many around Austin already know: Dr. Olson is committed to bringing Austin “high touch” dental care in a “high tech world.” She is one of Austin’s most talented cosmetic dentists, and is a leader in sedation dentistry. Dr. Olson is a past president of the Capital Area Dental Society and was the first woman elected to this position since 1947. She served the Texas Dental Association as chair of the council on peer review, and was recently inducted into the International College of Dentistry.

Dr. Olson enjoys her work with the Smiles for Success Foundation assisting women in transition from welfare to work who cannot afford the cost of dental care. With sedation dentistry, Dr. Olson and her team care for patients who are phobic about dentistry or have had traumatic dental experiences as children. Dr. Olson offers digital X-rays and CEREC one-day crowns.

Dr. Olson finds time to travel, garden, sing and cycle. She is a certified master gardener for Travis County, and a cantor and soloist at St. Theresa Catholic Church.
