Rervbodv Loves Shirlev
Wo's Who Among America's TeschersThere is no greater rewmd for teachers than to be valued
by former shrdents. Shirley Marley has touched the lives ofthousands of students, many ofwhom credit her as the person
who most sigrrihcantly in{luenced their zuccess. Due to the
efforts of former student 22 year-old Megan Kairq Shirley willbe honored in the October 2005 edition of Who's Who Among
,4neica's Teachers. This publication, in book form, honors a
select five percent of our country's premier teachers. Teachen
are nominated for this distinction by one of their current orformer students.
Megan Kain currently resides in New York City. She
attended St. Thomas Aquhas High School and the University of Mchigan, graduating with honors, from
both schools. A Miller-N{arley alum, Megan studid at the studio from preschool through high school.
She is remernbered by everyone who danced with her as having been not only a gifted scholar, but a very
gifted tap dancer, as well. Her love for her "favorite teacher" inspired Megan to nominate Shirley forinclusion in Wo's Who Among Ameica's Teachers. When interviewed, Megan said "Shirley was a
major player in my formative years. She instilld in me a reverence and respect for leaming and taught me
to embrace both success and failure as opporhmities for personal growth. I credit Shirley for having given
me the work ethic and deterrnination that have contributed to my personal and academic achieverne, lrts".
Shirley Marley, a Kansas City icon, whose name is synonymous with tap dancing, has owned and
operated the dancing school for 45 years. She is recognized as one ofthe nation's leading authorities on
tap. During the 1960's and 1970's Shirley served as the director of the Kansas City Chiefettes and was the
children's choreographer at Starlight Theater. Currently, in addition to teaching over a dozen tap classes
per week, she is the choreographer for the tap productions at Shawnee Mssion Theatre in the Park and has
been the recipient of the theater's coveted Demmi Award for best choreography.
So why does everybody love Shirlef Shirley simply has this indefinable magical quality about her.
She is a centrifugal force that reaches inside yorn soul and gives you wings to fly. Shirley can and willteach anyone to tap dance, but ocactly HOW she does i[ remains an enigma. There is one thing we know
for sure. When God l;vas passing out the patience, love and generosity, Shirley was one of the first in line.
Jerald Vincent, a former studen! whose Broadway credits include leading rclenrnBeauty and the Beast,
Aida atdThe Producers, still refers to Shirley as his second mother. He has stated, 'l{one of this would
have been possible without the unconditional love and guidance of Shirley Marley." Shirley's former
students rwr the gamut from show-biz folks to doctors, lawyers and CEOs. And, you can be! that right
now, one of them is reminiscing about the time they did The Boogie Woogie Pigg,t. If Shirley ever wrote
her life story, very little of the book would be about her. It would be about US - her shrdents. Because itis her students that Shirley lives for. Young and old big and small; we are all members of Shirley
Marley's Who's Wo - and that is why we love her.

Once upon a time there were two little girls
who took dancing at Mller-lvlmley. Theirnarnes were Kristen and Lindsey Sudeikis.
Kristen, the older sister, grew up to be a pro-
fessional dancer and choreographer. Lindsey,
the younger, free-spirited sister, grewup to be
a nun- Recently, Kristenandhersister, the*Sister", reunited at Lindsey's convent in New
York City and delighted the nuns with a per-
formance of Shirley's The Sheik, tap dance.
Long story short......The nuns were so taken
with'lhe spirit" of tap dancing that they now
attend weekly tap classes taught by "ntur-othet''
than Lindsey Sudeikis.
