ADMIRAL FARRAGUT ACADEMY St. Petersburg, Florida Admiral Farragut Academy is the only Honor Naval Academy in the United States. Founded in 1945, Admiral Farragut Academy is a co-educational, boarding and day college-preparatory military school with full Naval Junior ROTC status in grades 9-12 and military exposure in grades 6-8.

THE PROBLEM The 80-year old facility was experiencing system-wide plumbing failures in the hot and cold potable lines. Pinhole leaks, low water pressure and discolored water were all rampant. The academy required repairs to occur during operations so cadet safety was a high priority. As added safety, all contractors and their staff required Level 2 security clearance including background checks and fingerprinting.

THE SOLUTION The project consisted of the complete restoration of the water supply mains, risers and branch lines for the atrium style, 90-room facility. The project took approximately four months to complete. Using ACE DuraFlo’s ePIPE, the academy was fully functional and completely safe throughout the process.

“The cadet’s safety is our number one priority above all else and ACE DuraFlo’s epoxy lined piping solution for pinhole leaks and pipe restoration exceeded our need for health and safety concerns,” Randy Pike spokesman for the Admiral Farragut Academy says. “Pipeline Restoration Technologies was exceptionally courteous and professional and did not disrupt our school’s curriculum and activities even though the restoration took place with school in session.” “We are extremely pleased with Pipeline Restoration’s workmanship and the speed with which they completed the job,” Pike says. “Our plumbing works great and we won’t be worrying about leaks anymore!”

The Solution1) AIR DRYING OF PIPESAir hoses are connected to the piping system. The isolated system is then dried with preheated, fi ltered air.

2) CORUNDUM CLEANINGThe dried pipes are cleaned using an air and sand mixture that sandblasts the inside surface of the pipes. The cleaning process prepares the internal pipe surface for proper bonding of the epoxy.

3) EPOXY COATING APPLIEDThe fi nal stage of the ePIPE process is the application of the epoxy lining to the system. This seals and protects the piping system from future corrosion.

Welcome to our inaugural issue of Gear Up For the Game. Our publication is dedicated and devoted to the loyal fans of the hometown teams. We saw a distinct need for a magazine and information portal for fans. The media does a great job of game coverage but we feel not enough is being done for the fans that support and root for their favorite teams. The fans are the ones that buy the tickets, gear, food, drink, parking and more. Much of the excitement of the game are the activities fans partake in leading up to the game. The party begins in the parking lot before the game as fans tailgate and put their game faces on. Those that cannot make it to the stadium watch the game from the comfort of their home and we at Gear Up For The Game are popularizing the term “homegating”. Bring the tailgate into your home. We have two stories in this issue that I hope you find useful and informative. Tailgating 101 and Homegating. We made this publication digest size so it can be saved and referred to when you prepare for watching your favorite sporting event. Hopefully you will refer back to the checklist in this issue so both your tailgates and homegates are always a huge success. It’s the little details that will make your event an artistic and taste sensation. Our staff consists of seasoned experts on fan culture and we are committed to help you fully enjoy your favorite team. Our publication and web site www.GearUpForTheGame.com. will evolve and change as we grow. Our mission and creed is to inform and entertain and if we stick to that mantra and formula we will be destined for success. Watching sports is a great escape from the doom and gloom that fills the TV screens, newspapers and radio airwaves. Sport fans are passionate about their teams. After all, fan is short for fanatical. There are those that paint themselves like Big Nasty, Hall of Fame fan mascot, and Emperor of the Pewter Nation. Then there are equally passionate fans that wear a collared shirt with their favorite team colors and logo embroidered. The point is, you MUST wear your team colors. That’s the reason we decided to come up with name of our publication “Gear Up For the Game”. The matriarch of our family is my mother Muriel. She advised and encouraged me to form synergistic relationships with the customers that shop in our Authentic Team Merchandise retail super center and to form partnerships with others to share their message with our readers. I know we would appreciate it if you can patronize our advertisers and tell them that you saw their ad in our Gear Up For the Game magazine. Have you ever made the pilgrimage to our Authentic Team

Have you ever made the pilgrimage to our Authentic Team Merchandise retail super center in Tampa? If you haven’t, we look forward to welcoming you. If you have been to our store we hope you will return often. We are clearly the leaders in licensed merchandise for the hometown teams. We have the largest collection and selection of officially licensed gear. All in-stock merchandise ships out safe and sound to anywhere in the world the same day. We get in fresh merchandise daily so you need to check back often. We have it all! We want to hear from you. Send us your favorite tailgate recipes. Do you have a shrine dedicated to your favorite team? Send us a photograph. Interesting story ideas that you think our readers want to hear and read? We want to hear about your tailgates and homegates and tips that we can share with our readers on how they can step up their enjoyment as they follow their favorite team(s). Email me at jnf@bullsheaven or you can call me at 813-908-2827. I want to give a shout out of thanks to our editor Ben Keller who has worked so hard on this issue and future editions of this publication. We have grandiose plans. My brother Stephen says, “Be careful what you ask for and dream about - you can till you can’t.” I believe in having a positive attitude. I’m looking for the USF Bulls to become perennial Big East Champions in all sports, the Rays to remain American League Champions and bring home the World Series Pennant, the Lighting to win the Stanley Cup and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to bring home the coveted Vince Lombardi Super Bowl Trophy. Am I asking for too much? I don’t think so. See you again in August with another issue. In the meantime, Go Bucs! Go Bulls! Go Lightning! Go Rays! Jeffrey Neil Fox, Publisher

COVER STORY Story by Ben Keller – Editor

Thinking back to October 2008, a Tampa Bay Rays fan is reminded of a World Series run that was rivaled only by the ’69 Mets (except, they actually won it). Literally everyday in October became a record day in Rays Franchise history. But shortly after that monumental run that took the Rays all to way to an American League Championship victory against their division rivals, the Boston Red Sox, and an eventual loss to the notoriously hated Philadelphia Phillies in the 5th game of the World Series, the Rays lost a key member of their team.

After a half-decade of loyal service to the Rays/Devil Rays, the front office announced on November 18, 2008 that Kelly Frank aka “Raymond” (the Rays’ beloved mascot) had been terminated. No reason was given for the firing, but Frank’s antics and contributions to the Rays nation will forever be missed. She had a way of bringing a smile to the faces of Ray’s fans with her antics such as her hyping up the crowd by banging the cowbell and also patented the Raymond butt shimmy which is a favorite of the home town fans.

Despite fans being outraged by the firing of Raymond by the Ray’s front office following the their magical run to the World Series, fans at the 2009 Home Opener on April 13, 2009 welcomed the new Raymond with open arms. Children would run over to take pictures with the lovable furry mascot while other fans would rally around to try and give Raymond a fist-bump.

When it comes down to it, fans forget that there is someone on the inside of that furry light-blue suit. An individual, but most importantly, a performer. To bring a smile to somebody’s face is a gift, and not just anyone can have the patience to be a team mascot. So as fans of the home town team, I think

the next time you see Raymond, give him/her a high-five and

just say thanks for

being there every game, just as enthusiastic as the game before. Ring those “Cowbells” Rays fans, and we’ll be smooth sailing all the way back deep into October baseball.

TAILGATING Story by Jeffrey Neil Fox

Tailgating in the parking lot with Raymond James Stadium as a backdrop has become a tradition for Tampa Bay Buccaneer, Tampa Bay Rays and University of South Florida Bulls fans. There is noth-ing better than meeting other fans outside the stadium for cama-raderie, pre-game speculation, tasty snacks, ice-cold drinks and a festive meal.

Tailgating can simply be described as fans getting pumped up for their team in the parking lot prior to entering the stadium. The spirit that you bring to the game begins at your tailgate. Fans come from all over the bay-area to take part in pre-game festivities.

“The parking lot is a classic block party,” says longtime fan and tailgater Chris Merritt of Land ‘O Lakes. “Everyone tries to outdo other tailgaters, but you just can’t cast judgment. “

You’ll see the tailgating group with the “Mack-Daddy” Motor Coach – with the plasma TV and gourmet food – parked next to someone with a small Weber grill cooking burgers and hot dogs with chips and dip. Just have a good time - it’s all good!”

The most important factor is to put your worries and concerns aside and kick back, relax and get ready to watch your Pewter Pi-rates play smash mouth, exciting football and emerge victories. There is nothing better than walking back to your car after a hard-fought victory from the home team and continuing the party in the parking lot. It’s always fun to claim winners rights to rival fans in the parking lots, but remember you are representing your team, so show good sportsmanship.

For YOUR convenience as a tailgater, we at Gear Up For the Game have developed a simple checklist to go through the day before and prepare as much as your can for your tailgate.

Page 11: GUFTG Spring 2009

• Rule #1 – Literally, GEAR UP FOR THE GAME! HAVE A BLAST!

Not everyone has the privilege of having tickets to their favorite home town team’s games, and often it takes a great deal of organization and planning to attend such a big event. Some fans insist that the best seat in the house is right in front of the television set. “Homegating” is an easy way to bring the excitement of your favorite team whether it is NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, etc. into your home.

The majority of fans watch the game from home. These fans say that you just can’t beat laying back in your recliner chair and relaxing in the cool A/C in front of your 52 inch Plasma Screen TV. Seasoned homegater Beth Phillips of Brooksville said recently, “Almost everything is already in place for an enjoyable ‘homegate.’”

You make the rules when you homegate. You plan and make your own food. You don’t have to wait in any long lines. Most importantly, you have your own private bathroom. The heat at a p r o f e s s i o n a l sporting event can elevate to temperature near 100 degrees depending on where you are, especially in Florida. This is when air-Conditioning becomes so crucial. HOMEGATING CHECKLISTBrought to your by Gear Up For The Game

• Rule #1: Have fun!• Get your family, friends and kids involved in deco rating and planning what food to eat. Make a list.• Wear your team colors! Gear Up For The Game!• Napkins, paper towels, utensils and cups• Grill: Make sure you have backup propane, plenty of meat, chicken, veggies, hot dogs and fish. • Ask friends to bring a covered dish• Snack foods: Chips, pretzels & dip. Be creative as you want. • Coolers: You can never have enough ice and cold drinks.• “Homegate” healthy: Everyone loves fruit salad and garden salads.• Drinks: Water, soda, juice, beer, wine and mixed drinks. You can bring out your blender. (Please make sure you designate a driver to get your guests home safely if they are drinking alcohol)• Sunday Sports section• Use your imagination and enjoy the company of your friends and family. Root and hoot for the home team to emerge victories.

Like Dorothy from the ‘Wizard of Oz’ said, “There’s no place like home!” Tailgating at home can be as simple or elaborate as you want. You can cater in, or even make a last minute phone call to order pizza to arrive just in time for half time. You can prepare and serve and elaborate exotic buffet or even just kick back with your buddies and enjoy a cold beverage.

Like any successful event, preparation and planning is paramount. Homegating is easier than tailgating as far an preparations and supplies go and you don’t even have to leave your house. It’s all personal preference, the most important thing is to support your favorite team and have a great time.

In addition to Gear Up For The Game’s “Tailgating Checklist”, we have devised a “Homegating Checklist.” Refer to it before every game and we promise

your Homegate will be a success!

To be a fan of your favorite sports team can mean a number of different things. It could be as simple as putting on your team colors and watching your favorite team on your big screen TV, or it can be as extreme as having a contractual agreement to buy season tickets for a professional sports club for several years. Whatever the case may be, fans love their teams. Without fans, sports competitions would not be the same.

Besides the revenue that an average fan generates for a sports team, the passion and spirit that a fan has for their favorite team can be compared to love. For some fans, a team’s performance can affect a fan so much that it can ruin their entire day. For instance, the number-one Tampa Bay Buccaneers fan, Keith “Big Nasty” Kudzig, who paints his face black and red and wears and rhino horn on a hard hat at Bucs games has been quoted on ESPN.com saying that he is affected so much by a Bucs loss that he will literally be depressed until the next game day. Although Big Nasty knows that his favorite team can’t win every game, he sure would like it if they could.

Whether you’re an extremist, or the guy who wears sweatpants and sits on the couch to watch the game every Sunday afternoon eating potato chips and guacamole, all fans of a common team share a very unique bond. There is a shared love by any fan for their favorite sports club. Fans express their allegiance through t-shirts, hats, flags, license plates, bumper stickers, the interior decoration of a fan’s home, etc. Name any random item, and you can probably find your favorite team’s logo on it. (Don’t believe me? Check out www.GearUpForTheGame.com)

In my opinion, the most creative way to show your fan allegiance is by developing a team-specific vehicle. Meaning, turning your car, truck or van into a tribute to one’s favorite sports team.

FANS by Ben Keller – Editor

BIG NASTY! Story by Jeffrey Neil Fox

Keith Kunzig, aka Big Nasty, is the leader of the Pewter Nation and by far the biggest Buccaneer fan ever. One of Kunzig’s proudest moments was when his character was inducted into the NFL Pro Football Hall of Hame in Canton, Ohio in 2001.

Ever since he was a little boy, Kunzig promised his mother that he would be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He didn’t make it as a player, but he now has his place in the shrine as a fan. He said he made his deceased mother proud (she, too, was a fanatical football fan), when he looked up to the heavens and said, “This is for you, Mom,” on induction day.

Big Nasty has become an international icon during the past two decades and is a fan favorite. People stand in line to have their picture taken with him. It takes Kunzig more than an hour to transform himself from a normal guy to a wild, painted-up fan mascot. He’s the guy wearing black lipstick, a rhino horn on his head and a mile-long tongue. If you don’t believe in the “12th player” philosophy, Big Nasty will prove you wrong.

The famous Washington Redskins hoggets fan mascots had a dramatic influence on Big Nasty. When he found that these over-the-top fans generated millions for charities, he decided that he had to follow suit. Big Nasty has helped to draw attention and raise money for many Charities, including Locks of Love, March of Dimes, Children’s Dream Fund, the Kidney Foundation and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, just to name a few.

Big Nasty reached celebrity status when the Bucs went to San Diego and squared off against the Raiders in Super Bowl XXXVII in January 2003. Another proud moment for Big Nasty was when the Bucs returned to Tampa with the coveted Vince Lombardi trophy. He is hoping the Bucs make a return visit to the Super Bowl at the end of this season.

Page 18: GUFTG Spring 2009

When a typical fan gets ready to go to a Bucs game, they put on their pewter and red t-shirt, or throw on their Bucs jersey sporting their favorite player’s number and name. Then there’s the Super Fans. Big Nasty. JC Nasty. A-Train Man. Sign-Man. Pewter Pressley. Pirate Lady. Big Bop. Afro-Man. Boneshaker. These die-hard fans of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers paint up their faces, dress in costumes, wear skulls and crossbones necklaces and most importantly, are the biggest Buccaneer fans in the world.

The Super-Characters attend every home game, and the majority of away games to support their beloved Buccaneers. Fans like Big Nasty loves to entertain kids when he attends Bucs games and hands out tootsie rolls and takes pictures with anybody who requests one. Sometimes he will have a line of people waiting to take a picture with him. Sign-Man loves to hype up the crowd during the game by creating new and creative signs that might read, “First Down Tampa Bay,” or “Thanks for the interception”.

Despite how seriously the Super-Characters are about their Buccaneers, all their actions (intimidating face-paint, etc.) is all in good fun, and just because you’re a “normal” fan does not make you any less of a fan than the Super-Characters. Any Super-Character does their best to make any Bucs fan feel like they are part of a family and they encourage interaction

and love to take pictures. If you ever see them at a game, just say, “GO BUCS!” and you will receive a roaring response.

When it comes down to game time, all fans are created equal and every fan represents the 12th man on the

field. Who knows, you could even be the next Big Nasty.

FAN FEASTING featuring Brian Hartner, Grill Kingarticle by Ben Keller – Editor

Ingredients - 2 slabs of spare-ribs (about 4lbs ea.)- ½ cup of apple-butter- 2 cups of your FAVORITE BBQ sauce- ½ cup of garlic powder- 2 tbs brown sugar- 2 tbs black cracked pepper- 2 tbs paprika (smoked preferably)- 1 tsp cumin- 1 tsp cayenne- 2 tsp salt (opt)

Cooking Procedures Preheat your grill between 275 and 300 degrees Fahrenheit (medium/low heat). Proceed to peal the membrane off the back of the ribs. Set ribs aside after removing membrane and get a large bowl to mix rib-rub together. Add garlic powder, brown sugar, black pepper, paprika, cumin, cayenne and salt into the bowl, and mix with your hands. Then apply gener-ously to ribs. Place ribs on grill over indirect heat (it is optionally but adds great flavor when you use hickory chips on the grill; if you have a propane grill make a little bowl out of tin-foil and fill it with water-soaked woodchips, cover and punch a single hole in the top and place in a free space on the grill). Cook ribs for 2-3 hours, until they are golden brown. Flip and turn every 30 min-utes until cooked. After cooked, take the ribs off the grill and smear them with the apple-butter. Wrap the ribs in tin foil (put a ¼ cup of water in the tin foil with the ribs so they stay moist). Return ribs to grill, cook for another 90 minutes or until tender. After second grilling process is through, take ribs off the grill and remove the foil. Put the ribs back on the grill and apply your FAVORITE BBQ sauce. Cook another 10-15 to carmalize the bbq sauce, remove and ENJOY!

BBQ Smokey Ribsby Chef Brian Hartner

Grilling is considered to be an American staple. It is the foundation of any “homegating “ party and the number one choice of cooking-style for tailgaters. It’s easy to just throw some hot dogs on the grill, or pound some ground meat together and make a burger patty – but some tailgaters and homegaters consider themselves grill-masters and take it to the next level.

Take for instance Chef Brian Hartner. Chef Hartner has attended the world renowned Johnson & Wales Culinary Institute in Miami, FL where he received instruction from some of the top chefs in the country. Despite learning about food culture from all over the word, Chef Hartner’s

first love is the grill - his specialties are Wings, Baby-Back-Ribs and Shrimp. He just loves to watch a hockey game on his 47inch plasma television, and kick back while his food marinates in delicious spices and rubs that he creates himself, and then grill it to perfection.

Lucky for all of our grill-masters out there, Chef Hartner has agreed to share his recipes for Wings, Ribs and Shrimp with the Tampa Bay Community. If instructions are followed properly, his recipes are by far the most taste invigorating experience you will ever have at a tailgate - You will clearly be the grill-stud of the day.

low heat, so not to burn. When butter is melted, add the hot sauce,

garlic powder, black pepper and cayenne pepper. Mix together and

take off heat. After wings finish marinating, and the grill is heated,

place wings on the grill and cook for about 7 minutes per side, or until

an internal temperature of at least 165 degrees. Once cooked and

golden brown, remove wings from the grill and place in a mixing bowl

and toss with the sauce your made on the stove. Let sit for 5 minutes

and ENJOY!

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR provided by: Ben Keller – Editor, Gear Up For The Game

Dear Editor,First off, I just want to say GO RAYS, defending American League Champions,

WOOHOO!! Okay, I’ll get to my comment now: I am a novice tailgater and I was wondering if you could give me some advice on the basic items I will need to have the most successful tailgate possible, but without spending a lot of money. Thanks, Jonathan – Seminole, FL Jonathan,

Congratulations first and foremost for being the first ever “Letter to the Editor” for Gear Up For The Game. Here’s a little advice for having a successful, yet affordable, tailgate party. Bring your best friends, lots of water, beer, chips, burgers, hot dogs, buns, ketchup, mustard, napkins, a grill, a radio, folding chairs and if possible a canopy tent to protect you from the sun. If you can manage to get all of these items together, you’ll have yourself an awesome tailgate party. Oh right, and don’t forget to bring your car or truck! Have fun and be safe Jonathan, and root, root, root for those Rays.

Dear Editor,I want to welcome Raheem Morris to Tampa the right way by throwing an

amazing homegate party for all my closest buddies for the first Tampa Bay Buccaneers game of the 2009 season. Where can I find the best selection of Bucs gear in town so I can ‘Buc Up’? Go Bucs!

Sincerely, Jordan – Tampa, FL

Jordan,

The best place in town to get all of your Tampa Bay Buccaneer gear is Authentic Team Merchandise “It’s Bucs & Bulls Heaven” in North Tampa.
