To our 2009 graduates, families, and friends:

On behalf of all of us at The George Washington University, I offer congratulationsto our graduating students and welcome everyone to our CommencementWeekend. In a variety of events and activities May 15–17, the University will paytribute to the academic and personal achievements of our graduates.

In separate ceremonies during the weekend, each school will host a celebrationthat recognizes these achievements. Our all-university Commencement willtake place on Sunday, May 17, at 10:00 a.m. on the National Mall between theUnited States Capitol and the Washington Monument (between Fourth andSeventh streets).

Every effort has been made to ensure that we will be able to conductCommencement on the National Mall. At the same time, we have also carefullyplanned for an alternative venue if situations beyond our control prevent usfrom being on the Mall. This booklet will provide you with the information youneed for a successful and enjoyable Commencement Weekend, including detailsregarding the alternative site and emergency information.

Commencement is the capstone of a student’s journey. It is also a tribute to themany years of indispensable support and guidance each student has receivedfrom family, friends, and teachers, beginning long before his or her arrival at GW.I wish you all a weekend filled with pride and joy in successes achieved andthose to come.

Sincerely,

Steven KnappPresident

Commencement will be held on the National Mall rain or shine. However, if cir-cumstances beyond our control, such as an electrical storm, prevent us from hold-ing our ceremony on the National Mall, we plan to hold the event in the VerizonCenter. Because the Verizon Center is the home of two professional sports teams(the Washington Wizards of the NBA and the Washington Capitals of the NHL),we will announce the exact time for the alternate site ceremony after the playoffschedules for these teams (if any) are determined in late April or early May.PLEASE NOTE THAT EACH GRADUATE RECEIVES SIX (6) TICKETS [FOUR (4)BUFF AND TWO (2) GRAY] FOR COMMENCEMENT ON THE NATIONAL MALLBUT ONLY THE BUFF TICKETS CAN BE USED AT THE VERIZON CENTER.

In the event the Verizon Center is not available as a result of playoff games,GW’s Charles E. Smith Center will serve as the back-up site for the Sunday cer-emony. Graduates and the platform party will go to the Smith Center. Multiplevideo viewing sites will be available on campus for guests.

If we are forced to use an alternate site plan, we will do everything possible toschedule the ceremony at a time convenient for graduates and their families. While unlikely, it is possible that our alternate ceremony could take place onthe evening of Sunday, May 17. For that reason, you may wish to considermaking travel arrangements that could accommodate this circumstance.Again, we will do everything possible to conduct the ceremony at or near thescheduled National Mall start time.

In the event that it is necessary for us to cancel or leave the National Mall cer-emony due to life-threatening and/or emergency circumstances, the followinginformation will assist you:

• Current information on the status of Commencement Weekend events willbe available on a 24-hour basis throughout the week from Monday, May 11,through Sunday, May 17, at (202) 994-5050. This recorded information will
