ESN Linköping wants you to get as good a start as possible to your stay in Linköping, which is why we try to match Swedish students with Exchange students in our Peer Student Programme. The concept of the Peer Student Programme is very open and fopen and free, it gives you someone to ask practical questions about student life in Linköping, to perhaps have lunch or ““ika” with occasionally or maybe attend some of ESN Linköping’s events together! A Peer Student can be your lifeline here in SSweden. Ask her/him about what milk you should put in your coffee, when you have to queue for the upcoming Kravall or where to “ix your bike. The aim is for the students involved to get the opportunity to make new friends, for International students students to get gain some insight into Swedish student life and for the

Swedish student to have experienced parts of another culture.

NoNote: it is not the job of the Peer student to assist you in practical matters such as retrieving your apartment key for you before you arrive in Linköping or similar, for such practicalities you will have to contact the International Of“ice at the ununiversity.

HOW TO GET ONEIf you want a Peer Student you have to sign up on our webpage www.esnlinkoping.org. You will “ind the application on the right hand side on the start site, after which we will try to pair you up with someone as soon as possible. Unfortunately we dodon’t always have enough Swedish students for all the International

students who sign up, or enough International students for all the Swedish students, so we cannot guarantee that you will get paired up with someone immediately. The Swedish student will then receive your contact information and contact you as soon as possible.you as soon as possible.

If you have questions about the peer student programme or need any help, please send a message to [email protected].

PEER STUDENT KICKOFF In the beginning of every semester ESN Linköping throws a Peer Student Kick Off where you can get to know your peer student better. (You are of course welcome even if you don’t have a peer student!) So grab your Peer Student and join us for this awesome evevent! You will “ind more information about the event on our website.

most of them on Thursdays. ESN Linköping has a kravall of its own, which is held in October every year. All educational specializations (economics, computer science, teaching etc.) have an overall colour of their own, making it easy to igure out persoperson’s ield of studies, as an international student your overall is blue with yellow stripes. Most people pimp their overalls buy sewing on patches they’ve gotten at different parties.

Important: you are never to wear it “full bodied” except for during the overall premiere party, normally you wear it as pants and tie the arms around your waist. To inaugurate your overall ESN will throw you a legendary Overall Premiere to get it dirty! dirty! To ind more information about how to wear, pimp and get your overall go to our website and read the overall guide..

So buy a overall as the semester start and join the Swedish tradition!

SITTNINGThe most typical element in the Linköping student life is the “sittning”, which is a themed dinner party spiced up with entertainment and a lot of singing amongst the participants!

A sittning in LinA sittning in Linköping has a few very obvious characteristics, which may be performed slightly differently dependent on the organizers’ faculty or programme, but the over all idea is the same.

Toastmasters/madamsThe The toastmasters/madams will be in charge of the sittning, they will decide when to do what, which song to sing when and similar things. Always be silent when they are speaking!

Seating arrangementsAAt almost every sittning in Linköping the arrangers will decide beforehand where everyone is supposed to sit by doing a seating arrangement and place seating cards at every seat. It is very important that you follow this order and sit where they have seated you, since the staff serving the food needs to know where everyone with special food preferences (i.e. allergies, non-alcoholic bebeverages, vegetarians etc.) are seated.

TempoThe The toastmasters/madams will at the start of the sittning present the tempo of the night. It could range from anything like “Things related to Sweden/rainforests/football/whatever” to “How I want this night to end” to “Things you don’t want your mother to know”. Whenever you feel like you want to sing a song, you think of something related to the tempo (preferably something funsomething funny!). Once you’ve thought of something funny, you inform the rest of the table by saying “Psst! Tempo xxxx”, when everyone is on board you start hammering on the table and then shout it to the rest of the room. The toastmasters/madams will then chose a song for you all to sing.

GyckelWhen attending a sittning in Linköping it is likely that you will get to see special performances called “gyckel”. These are songs where someone has replaced the lyrics to a wellknown song with lyrics that usually are of a sarcastic, humoristic and dirty nature. The toastmasters/madams usually perform some, and there might be guests performances as well. There are certain traditional things to shout betto shout between the songs in order to get to hear more, but what to shout is decided by the toastmaster/madam. Don’t worry, you’ll get the hang of it!

One word that might need further explanation is the noun “Fika”. First of all we have to straighten out one thing: it doesn’t mean the same thing as in the Italian word “Fica”. A Fika is more or less the act of having a coffee, often along with some kind of cookie or sweets. You can take a Fika whenever you want, in the middle of the night, in the afternoon and so on. Fika is more of a social thing, people even tend to have a common ika at work so don’t get worried if the person is not in their of ice, they are probably out for a Fika!
