Guide for tree pruners HOW TO DIAGNOSE THE PRESENCE OF EMERALD ASH BORERS Adult emerald ash borers are small green metallic insects that are hard to observe in the field. Ash trees attacked by emerald ash borers may show a wide variety of signs and symptoms: The D-shaped adult emergence holes (figure 1), the larvae (figure 2) and their S-shaped galleries under the bark (figure 3) make it possible to accurately confirm the presence of this insect. disposal of ashwood waste Ashwood waste such as logs or branches is the biggest carrier in the spread of emerald ash borers. Adult emerald ash borers, which spread by flying, may emerge from ashwood starting in the late spring and all summer long.

ash borers, after processing, may be kept and relocated (for example, lumber cut into wood planks, with woodchipping of the wood waste including the bark).

after processing, may be kept and relocated. Please note: At no time may ashwood be kept as firewood.

treating ash trees to proteCt them against emerald ash borers There are a number of approved pesticides on the market to control emerald ash borers. Ville de Montréal uses TreeAzin. This pesticide, whose effectiveness has been scientifically proven, has very low toxicity for the environment. Under the municipal by-law, no permit is necessary to use it, contrary to the other products on the market. Since emerald ash borers may be found all over the island of Montréal, it is preferable to have ash trees treated as quickly as possible. When an ash tree starts to show symptoms of infestation such as withering, the treatments are generally ineffective.

treatment of ash trees in high-risk areas Every year, Ville de Montréal carries out thousands of detection operations. These operations help determine the areas where ash trees are the most likely to be attacked by emerald ash borers. All healthy or slightly withering ash trees located in these areas must be treated and this must be done every year, between June 1 and August 31. Certain exceptions apply. The owners of ash trees located within these areas may be eligible for financial assistance covering part of the treatment costs.

help us fight emerald ash borers! Emerald ash borers are jeopardizing the survival of ash trees on the island of Montréal. If nothing is done, thousands of ash trees will have to be cut down over the next few years. In order to slow down the infestation of these destructive insects and reduce the number of ash trees that will otherwise die on its territory, Ville de Montréal and its partners have adopted a by-law to fight this insect. Your cooperation is essential to its success!

Cutting down and pruning ash trees Under the current municipal by-law, if more than 30 % of an ash tree’s branches are dead, the tree must be cut down no later than December 31 of the current year. An owner wanting to have an ash tree cut down on his property must first obtain a permit. This permit is required for ash trees 15 cm in diameter or more. It takes a certain amount of time before a permit is issued, because an inspector must examine the tree. Ash trees may be pruned or cut down at any time of year. However, it is important to comply with the restrictions on moving and disposing of ashwood.
