    G U I D E B O O K HISTORY

    Cannes/ GUIDE BOOK

From 1834, Cannes became one of THE placesto be! Across the Channel, the city of Cannes hadacquired a great reputation for its climate after aformer Royal Chancellor, Lord Henry Broughamand Vaux, decided to spend the winter here... andended up staying thirty- four years!

A talented ambassador for Cannes, inviting hisfriends and relations to the city, Lord Broughamopened the doors to the city to his peers andkings, queens, princesses, dukes as well as greatwriters and up and coming artists like ProsperMrime, Guy de Maupassant, Domergue, Cha-

teaubriand, Victor Hugo, Stendhal, Picabia, Renoirand Picasso. And so the first tourist season wasborn, from autumn to winter. With the advent ofpaid leave, the season switched to spring andsummer. In the days when the first trains broughtQueen Victoria of England, Tsarina Maria Alexan-drovna of Russia, and the kings and queens ofSweden, Denmark, Belgium and Spain, Canneswas enriched by sumptuous palaces, mansions, big luxury hotels and venues for festivities.

The Croisette, then called Boulevard delImpratrice, became a social focal point edginga beautiful bay. Several gaming establishmentsadded an international flavour that appealed toan Oriental clientele of Maharajahs, Sultans andEmirs as well as Western high society. Francesfirst clay tennis court was built in Cannes by SirThomas Woolfield, nicknamed the Marquis ofCarabas.

    CANNES, CAPITAL OF SOPHISTICATED SPORTS

Golf became popular from as early as 1890,spurred on by Grand Duke Michael of Russia, who founded the Cannes Golf Club in Cannes-Mandelieu Sailing, introduced a few years earlierunder the aegis of the Duke of Vallombrosa, definitely established its pedigree in Cannesthanks to the Prince of Wales, the future EdwardVII, through the prestigious Royal Regattas in theBay of Cannes. Participants included the crownedheads of England, Russia, Denmark and Sweden. The 20th century transformed the City of Princesinto a leading tourism destination on the FrenchRiviera.

at the foot of ahill that served as a lookout over the Seignioryof Rodoard, Cannes startedout as a small fishing harbour overrun withreeds. It was called Portu Canuae andfaced the Lrins Islands, known since Antiquityunder the names of Lro and Lrina.

In 999, one year before the awful Year OneThousand, the Castrum Marcellus, fortwas built on the hill of the Suquet.Portu

Canuae had its khan, its high pointin Celto-Ligurian terminology, hence thename Cannes !Having experienced Spanish and Saraceninvasions, the royal incarceration of theenigmatic Man in the Iron Mask, the spectacularbreakout of Marshal Bazaine, the armiesof Charles Quint warring against those ofFranois I, not to mention the landing ofNapoleon Bonaparte, Cannes was alreadyprepared for its cosmopolitan destiny

CANNESS COAT OF ARMSAzure, silver and gold, Canness coat of arms reflects the citys sky, light and sunshine. Aroundthe year 1000, the Abbey of Lrins added two letters : C for Canna (Cannes) on the upper left ofthe shield and A for Abbatia (Abbey) on the lower right.

This coat of arms remained unchanged until 1633, when the consuls of Cannes decided, withoutany authorisation, to replace the two letters (C and A) with two fleur-de-lis, a tribute to theMarquis de Saint Chamond, representing the Governor of Provence.

The silver palm on a field of blue was the Abbeys emblem. Still present on the coat of arms today,it makes reference to the palm tree on which Saint Honoratus climbed for the sea to clean hisisland of the snakes infesting it.

But it was not until 20th September 1946, inCannes former Casino, that the InternationalFilm Festival opened - the first major inter-national cultural event after the war. The firstFrench convention centre was built in 1947 to hostthis prestigious event. The first Festivals exuded the air of a society, tourism or film event rather than a filmcompetition. The Cannes Film Festival quicklybecame the quintessential event for filmprofessionals, as well as the annual event withthe greatest media coverage. Today, almost 4,000journalists attend the Festival.

of the Americans and the British wereshocked by interference from fascistgovernments in the selection of films for theVenice Film Festival, the Mostra di Venezia. They therefore encouraged the idea of aninternational film festival in France. Possiblehost towns included Vichy, Biarritz andAlgers, but Cannes won the vote because ofits sunshine and delightful setting as well

as its suitable infrastructure. Presided overby Louis Lumire, the inventor of movingpictures, the 1st International Film Festivalin Cannes was to take place from 1st to 20thSeptember 1939.

Its aim was to encourage the developmentof the cinematographic art in all its formsand to foster a spirit of collaboration betweencountries that produce films.
