President’s Message 2008 recycling ALPAR helps to promote economically viable recycling through education and public awareness, placement of drop-off sites for recyclables and assisting with the backhaul of materials to Outside markets. Shipping for a large portion of the recyclables in the Railbelt is accomplished thanks to the generosity of Totem Ocean Trailer Express, Horizon Lines of Alaska, AML/Lynden, the Alaska Railroad and Northland Services. These companies have made recycling work for 25 years.

AlPAr Flying Cans Rural communities recycled 22,000 pounds of aluminum cans in 2007 thanks to Northern Air Cargo and member airlines of the Alaska Air Carriers Association, ALPAR’s backhaul partners.

school recycling Kids, with help from dedicated teachers, earn money for their schools by bringing cans to the Anchorage Recycling Center. ALPAR’s school posters help encourage students to reduce, reuse and recycle.

Can-do Kids Kids CAN DO a great job of recycling! They earn pocket money and prizes when they turn in aluminum cans at the Anchorage Recycling Center.

Adopt-A-Pathway Adopted pathways are kept free of litter by dedicated volunteers.

AlPAr youth litter Patrols ALPAR’s oldest program provides grants to communities for summer jobs picking up litter. Youth help clean up and recycle litter and and remind everyone to dispose of litter properly.

Community Clean up Across Alaska Volunteers all over the state help clean up their communities every spring. In 2007, ALPAR supplied over 250,000 free, bright yellow clean up bags to over 220 communities and groups thanks in large part to BP and Pepsi. ALPAR’s free, green recycle bags help communities with aluminum recycling.

Christmas Tree recycling, Nursery Pot recycling & more During and after the holidays, Christmas trees are dropped off at CARRS parking lots in Anchorage and Palmer, where they are recycled into wood chips for use on local trails and gardens. Our one-day September Nursery Pot recycling event in Anchorage helps with these hard-to-recycle containers.

Alaska’s communities are cleaner when everyone works together – our sincere thanks to the many volunteers who donate their time to help keep Alaska beautiful.

2008 marks ALPAR’s 25th year of service to Alaska’s communities. It is a time to

celebrate our successes and continue to look to the future. ALPAR’s commitment to

the environment through innovative recycling and litter prevention programs has

never been more apparent. As always, great partnerships with Alaska’s businesses and

communities have played a vital role in our success.

We are especially proud of ALPAR’s long-term backhaul program for the Railbelt

that ships recyclables to the lower 48. Horizon Lines and TOTE, and in recent years,

Lynden and Northland Services have generously contributed millions of dollars in

free backhaul services since the early 1980’s. As a result, our partners at Smurfit

Stone Recycling and Valley Community for Recycling Solutions are able to provide

on-going, economically viable recycling services to our communities.

Since the mid-80’s, rural communities have embraced ALPAR’s Flying Cans

recycling program thanks to Northern Air Cargo and many bush airlines, recycling

21,750 lbs of aluminum cans in 2007 alone. ALPAR’s recycling grants help fund

programs as diverse as refurbishing recycling containers in Sand Point to purchasing

a scale in Kwigillingok and sponsoring electronics recycling in Fairbanks.

This past year, ALPAR began a new initiative to educate and encourage businesses

to institute plastic bag recycling and conservation programs that will curb litter and

increase plastic recycling.

ALPAR continues to help clean up the state through our massive distribution of

the free bright yellow litterbags. With support from BP, we sent litter bags to over 220

communities and organizations across Alaska. And with help from ConocoPhillips,

ALPAR funded Youth Litter Patrols in 82 communities providing summer jobs for

youth and cleaning up throughout the summer.

I am honored to serve as ALPAR’s president for 2008-09. Thank you to our dedicated

board members, corporations, community organizations and volunteers who have

worked diligently to support recycling and a litter-free Alaska for 25 years!

Best Regards,

why do we recycle Plastic

bottles & Jugs only?In Alaska, only #1 plastic bottles and #2 plastic bottles/jugs are

accepted - all must have a neck and screw top. Containers without a neck such as tubs, buckets or clear salad bar containers contain different

chemicals than bottles/jugs even though they may use the same resin (#1 or #2), which does not allow mixing with bottles/jugs in the melting

process. “Non-bottles” are much lower in value and lower in volume as a percentage of all plastic containers which makes them much less economical to recycle. Plastics require strict sorting and since Alaska

doesn’t yet have a sorting facility, YOU must sort them properly at home. Don’t forget, you can also recycle plastic bags and film.
