GENERAL

Description This procedure covers the RF power calibration of Multi-Carrier Radios (MCRs) and UCR450

in the following frames: Modcell 4.0B, High Density 4.0/4.0B (radios connected to Flexent amplifiers), Compact 4.0B, and Compact Modcell 450 MHz (Standard Configuration) Base Unit of Compact 450 MHz RU/BU Configurations (for Remote Unit

calibrations, see Section 355) IMT 2100 MHz Compact 4.0B. Base Station 2400 (MCRs)

This Off-Line calibration procedure uses RMT’s “M4.0 RF Calibration” Graphic User Interface (GUI). This requires the cell to be disconnected from the switch (Out Of Service) and booted directly to the RMT.

When to Perform this Procedure

The situations requiring this field calibration (running this section) are:

Recalibrations required due to MCR, Filter, or associated cable replacements NOTE: Calibrate only the transmit paths effected by the replacement.

Transmit path add; i.e. adding a path using TX2 as part of carrier growth Previous Release Date

January 22, 2007

Release Notes Update for RMT 28.0

Automatic, post-calibration Backplane consistency check Cautions To prevent personal injury, care must be exercised when connecting power to any equipment.

Dangerous voltages and currents are present at the cell. Lucent Technologies’ CDMA equipment employs CMOS integrated circuits, which are susceptible to damage from Electrostatic Discharge (ESD). Use ESD wrist straps to avoid this damage.

Reference Sections

This section references procedures in the other Handbook Sections. The table below lists these sections and their function within this calibration procedure.

Section Function

001 Technical Support Information

003 Supporting Documentation

101 Required Test Equipment

302 RMT Off-Line Connection

345 Identify Channel and Tx Port Configuration of the Cell

351 Power Measurement Equipment Set Up Power Sensor CAUTION

The RF Power levels used with this multi-carrier calibration are higher than previous Off-Line calibration procedures and may damage power sensor heads. The calibration signals include all equipped carriers on a Tx Port at full power. A 40 dB, 300 Watt attenuator is recommended to perform this calibration for typical terminating power sensors (rated for +20 dBm max).

Preliminary Requirements

Check off each item in the table below to ensure that all prerequisites are met prior to starting this procedure:

RMT 28.0 or later is loaded on the laptop and configured to run,

An Ethernet Crossover cable is available,

RMT INITIALIZATION

Frame Must Be Booted to RMT

These RF power calibration procedures are performed using the Off-Line RMT feature with the cell connected/booted to RMT. The RMT Calibration GUI adjusts the “B1” and “B3” backplane parameters that control the radio output for each transmit path.

Multiple Frame Configuration Notes

If radios in more than one frame require calibration, perform the calibration for the Primary radios, if applicable, then calibrate Growth frame transmit paths. 15 MHz for Growth Frames: When calibrating the transmit paths for MCRs located in a Growth frame, the Primary frame must be active in order to provide 15 MHz.

If the Primary frame is not involved in the calibration (i.e. no radios or filters located in the frame are part of the calibration transmit path being calibrated) then the Primary frame may stay in service.

The Primary frame (Modcell 1.0/2.0/3.0) should stay connected to the switch and active but CBRs in the Primary frame should be turned off at the faceplates to disable the transmit paths that share triplex filters

NOTE: The Primary frame can be removed from service and booted with RMT and configuring the CTU to enable the 15 MHz; however, this is not recommended due to the unnecessary complexity this would bring to the procedure.

High Density CLGC Hub (Primary MCRs Connected to Filters in the Growth 1 frame): One High Density 4.0 configuration has transmit paths where the MCRs and amplifiers are located in the Primary frame and the filters are in the Growth. This configuration requires an Ethernet hub to support communication between the MCRs and those filters. During calibration of the Primary frame MCRs, the Growth 1 frame must also be booted with RMT to support this communication. When calibrating transmit paths in this configuration, the following are required:

The Ethernet hub must be connected to the first Voice URC (IOU connection) or URC-II (faceplate connection) of both frames,

The laptop must be connected to the Ethernet hub to run RMT, The Growth 1 frame must be booted with RMT with the CTUs initialized to provide

the 15 MHz and support the filter communication, and Another RMT session must be started to boot the Primary frame with the MCRs and

perform the calibration.

Compact 4.0B Growth Frame Configuration Notes

Compact 4.0B Growth Frame Configuration This configuration uses an Ethernet hub to allow Growth frame MCRs to obtain filter information from the Primary frame. When calibrating the Growth frame transmit paths the following is required:

The Ethernet hub must be connected to the first Voice URC (HIOU/CIOU connection) or URC-II (faceplate connection) of both frames,

The laptop must be connected to the Ethernet hub to run RMT, NOTE: The Primary frame may be left active (i.e. In-Service) when calibrating the Growth paths.

POWER METER CONNECTION Prepare the Meter

Set up and calibrate the power meter. NOTE: Power meter calibration must be repeated every time the meter is turned ON. This guarantees accurate measurements.

Power Sensor CAUTION

The RF Power levels used with this Multi-carrier calibration procedure and may damage power sensor heads. The calibration signals include all equipped carriers on a Tx Port at full power. A 40 dB, 300 Watt attenuator is recommended to perform this calibration for typical terminating power sensors (rated for +20 dBm max).

Dualband Cell Note

Remember to change the power meter setup when switching between the 1900 MHz (PCS) and 850 MHz (Cellular) bands.

Connect the Meter

Perform the following steps to connect the power meter to the frame for the first calibration.

Step Action

1 Turn Off all the Radios in the frame by moving the Tx faceplate switch on all radios to the OFF position. Also, turn off any other radios sharing the filter with the radios to be calibrated.

2 Place the RF power meter in a position so that the reading can be seen from the front of the cell.

3 Determine which filter positions the radio transmit paths are using.

4 Remove the foam jumper antenna cable from the transmit port (located on the top, rear of the frame) for the first transmit path to be calibrated.

5 Connect the cable/attenuator/sensor assembly to the appropriate transmit antenna for the first transmit path of the frame to calibrate (alpha face).

Caution: An attenuator must be used to reduce the RF power applied to the sensor for this measurement or the sensor will be damaged! See the caution above. Additionally, an adapter cable is required to physically allow the connection of the attenuator/sensor combination to the port. Use care to make sure that all connections are hand tight. There is no need for tools to tighten the cable/attenuator/meter connectors.

6 Proceed to RF CALIBRATION on the next page.
