Guide to Socrative
Socrative is a quizzing app. It is great for judging whether students have understood the content of the
lesson/lessons. It is an incredibly versatile app as it can be used on any device with an internet connection- meaning
that you don’t have to book the iPads to use it. The quizzes are fantastic because they give you, the teacher, as well
as the student immediate feedback on whether the students have understood the topic of the class.

Teacher and Student App
There are two apps- the ‘Teacher’ and the ‘Student’. Click on the orange Teacher icon.
Log in by entering your username (this will be an email address) and password then click Sign In. If you haven’t
created a log in create one by clicking on the purple button saying Register.

Registering
Please note that if you register online (i.e by going onto your internet browser and going to www.socrative.com and
clicking on ‘Teacher Login’) then the registering process is slightly different. However don’t panic as the only
difference is that it will ask you a few more questions such as what do you teach? Etc.
1. Your name 2. Your email- I
recommend using your
school email as you are
less likely to forget your
details.
3. Password- again it’s
easy to remember if
you use your school log
in password. Ensure its
8 characters long.
4. Repeat password.
5. Click agree.
6. Click ‘Submit’.
Occasionally after clicking Submit it shows a loading sign on the
Submit button but doesn’t log in. This means it has ‘frozen’.
Simply quit the app (double-click the ‘Home Button’ and swipe
the app upwards). Re-open the app and put your log in details
which you just registered with in and it should log you in. If it
doesn’t then try re-registering.

**To change your room name simply click on Menu (top right
corner)- Profile- Room. Click on Edit next to the room icon and type
in what you want your room name to be. You cannot use a space
but you could use a . or a – instead.***
Dashboards & Virtual Classroom
This is your virtual classroom room name.
This always stays the same- but you can
change it. **Please view changing room
name.** The students use this number to
log in to your room.
Click here if you have made a quiz
and want to run it with your class.
Quick question
requires no prep.
Can be used as a
voting system. Click here if you
want the students to
team up to do a quiz
(please note you will
already have to have
made a quiz). This is
great as you can
reflect it on the
board and the kids
can see each team’s
progress.
Use this at the end of
class to assess how
the students felt
about the lesson and
check for
understanding- did
they think they
understood? They
also get to put into
their own words what
they thought the
lesson was about.

Manage Quizzes Dashboard
Click here to import a quiz someone
else has made using the ‘SOC-Number’
This is the archive of your past
quiz reports.
This is the archive of all your
quizzes. Click here to edit
them, find their SOC number
etc.
This one is fairly
straight forward.

Space Race Space Race is a way for the students to team up and collaborate on a quiz. The students can automatically be
assigned a team or you (the teacher) have the option to choose the number of teams. This is great as it gets
competitive and encourages collaboration and teamwork as well as peer learning. You can reflect the race on the
board as it happens so that the students can see which team is in the lead. This can also be useful if one or a few of
the students don’t have a mobile device so they could share a device as a team.
Select a pre-made quiz
Decide the number of teams
Assign team colours if you like
Would you like the
students to see
the correct
answers after they
have answered a
question? When you are satisfied click start!

Quick Question Requires no prep! Simply click on Quick Question and you’re away. Chose the question type you would like to use. Be aware
that these are run slightly differently in that you ask a verbal question and the students then choose what they think is the
correct answer. This is really versatile because not only can you use it to quickly judge your classes understanding of the topic
but it can also be used as a voting system- reflect it on the board to show the results of the vote!
***Teachers view of questions
For the short answer you have the option
of typing in the question instead.

Creating a Quiz Creating a quiz in the Socrative app is pretty straight forward. From the main dashboard click on Manage Quizzes
and then click ‘Create Quiz’. You can also log on to www.socrative.com and sign into the teacher app (on your
desktop computer) if you find it easier to type on there.
Click here to start making a new quiz!
Click here to name your quiz.
This is the quiz’s unique SOC number (use
this to share your quiz with other teacher)
Add a tag if you like.
When you are ready to add your first
question click on the kind of question you
would like first. This is the same when you
want to add further questions to your
quiz- scroll to the bottom of the page and
you will see them.
9
Multiple Choice Questions The multiple choice question is great because it requires little prep and is automatically marked as correct/incorrect
as the students work through the quiz- saving you lots of marking time!
Put your question here
Don’t like the question?
Delete it here.
Put your
correct and
incorrect
answers
here. Don’t
forget to
click which
one is
correct! You
can put
more than
one correct
answer.
Add or delete answers (you don’t
have to have 5!)
You can even add an image! Be
creative! Download an image from
the internet onto your camera roll
or take on using your camera.
Add an optional explanation to the
answer. The students will see this
after they answer.
Change the
order of the
questions
by clicking
the up and
down
arrows.
10
True/False Question The true or false question again is really straight forward and is automatically marked as correct or incorrect when
the students are taking the quiz. It is exactly the same as the multiple choice question except for that instead of
clicking on the correct answers(s) box-simply click of the true or the false (It will turn green) to show which on is
correct. You can again add an optional explanation and an image.
Click on true or false to highlight
which one is correct.
To add another question simply
click which one you want to have
next. If you change your mind you
can delete it.
11
Short Answer The short answer question is slightly different in that the computer finds it hard to judge whether the answer is
correct or not. You can add an optional correct answer (see below to see what it looks like) however if the student
spells it wrong the computer will mark it as incorrect. What you can do instead is write the correct answer in the
‘Explanation’ box. This way the child can see for themselves whether they got it right or not however you will have
to go through and correct these by hand when the report is sent to you. Other than this it is essentially the same as
the other question types.
Click here to add optional correct
answer. You can add more than
one.
Top Tips! As with any technology, when you are creating something it is good practice to make
sure that you save regularly (on the top bar next to your room name it says save and exit- click
here). After saving it will take you back to the main dashboard. Go to manage quizzes- my
quizzes and click on whichever one you were working on. Then click on edit (on the right hand
side). This will then take you back to the quiz creation/editing page.

Running a Quiz
Different Kinds of Quizzes There are three different kinds of quizzes you can run in Socrative (not including space race and exit ticket). Below is
a list of each one:
Select which kind of quiz you want to run.
Explanation of each below:
1 2 3
13
Student Paced – Immediate Feedback
This first option gives the students the option of seeing whether they got the question right or wrong immediately
after they answer the question (you can disable this feature if you like- explanation later on in this section). The
students cannot skip questions or go backwards and forwards- they have to answer each question as it comes. You
can see what each student is answering in your live results tab- this only appears in the teacher app- picture below.
The live results tab looks the same for all quizzes except for the Space Race.
14
Student Paced- Student Navigation
In this quiz the students can skip questions and go backwards and forwards- they can navigate through the
questions. They are not able to see whether they got the answer right or wrong.
Teacher Paced
In this mode you, the teacher, choose when the students can answer the next question. You can skip and revisit
questions.
15
Additional Settings When you are choosing which quiz to run you will notice that there are also some additional settings. You can
disable students names- useful if you want to display the results on the board, you can randomize the question
order- makes it difficult for people to cheat!, you can randomize the answer order (not too sure about the use of this
one but be creative!), and you can even disable student feedback.
When you are happy- click start
16
Reports Whenever you have run a quiz with your class- when everyone is finished- Socrative will prompt you to select what
kind report you want sent to yourself and where you w ant it sent to. There are a few alternatives:
This is the list of ways you can have the
report sent to you. Easiest way is
generally email. You can opt to view it
later (this is useful if you didn’t mean to
start the activity!) Make sure you click on
one of the icons- even though it looks like
e-mail is selected don’t be fooled by this.
You must still click it before you can
continue.
This is the list of the kinds of reports which
can be sent to you. You can get a whole
class Excel, Individual Student PDF (you
can print these and hand them back to
your students- easy to mark the short
answers!) or question specific pdf. Bear in
mind that iPads cannot open zip files so
don’t be alarmed it you cannot open it on
your iPad. You can open the whole class
excel on your ipad but if you click on more
than one you won’t be able to- same with
the individual student PDF.
When you are happy- click submit!
17
If you chose to view your report later (or have accidentally deleted the copy you sent to yourself) they are stored for
you automatically. Simply go to Manage Quizzes- Reports and it will take you to this page:
This is the list of your most recent quizzes. You can chose to archive these so that they are not all in the recent tab.
You can also filter via Quizzes, Space Races, Exit Tickets and Short Answer.
18
Importing a Quiz Importing a quiz is easy and also time saving. If you find that you do not have the time to make a quiz this is a great
option. You could import your colleagues’ quizzes or even go online to find a quiz that you want to download. All
you need is the SOC number. By logging on to www.socrative.com you can navigate to their online community called
Socrative Garden. Please be aware that this is an American website so check the quizzes before you run them as the
curriculum will be different. There are other websites available which have Socrative quiz archives e.g. TES so it is
worth having a look around.
1.Go to www.socrative.com and click
on ‘Resources’
2. Scroll down ever so slightly and
click on BLOG.
3. Click on Quiz Sharing (top right in
the middle)
19
4. Click on the super obvious Shared Quiz
List.
5. It will take you to a large and very well
organized spread sheet which (luckily) you
can filter via subject. Then simply copy (or
write down) the SOC-Number….
20
6. And paste it into here (get to here by clicking on Import Quiz in the Manage Quizzes dashboard). Then click import
quiz. If it works it will say import successful and if it doesn’t it will come up with a red box saying that it didn’t work.
Check the number to ensure it’s correct. Make sure it’s in this format: SOC-XXXXX where Xs’ are numbers. If it still
doesn’t work then it is due to the fact that the number posted on the website it wrong.
Top Tip!! Always ALWAYS check a quiz you have downloaded before you do it with a
class. To do this, simply go to Manage Quizzes- My Quizzes. Then it will be called ‘Copy
of’ (then the name of the quiz). Click on it and some options will appear below it. Click
on Edit and it will take you to the quiz editing (same as the quiz creating) screen.

Troubleshooting
As with all technology- things do go wrong occasionally! Do not worry- here is a list of the most common things to go
wrong. If any others occur let me know and I will add them and solutions to this list:
1. You can’t log on (applies to both student and teacher log on)
a. The most common reason why you are unable to log on is due to your internet being dropped (or
not on in the first place). To rectify this close the app- I suggest fully closing the app by double
clicking on your home button and swiping the app upwards. Then go to your iPad settings. Go to wi-
fi and make sure it’s connected to iGryphon (password cda33794ffb). Once it has connected go to
safari to ensure that you are logged on to the school network. If you are not it will prompt you to
put your log in details in (your normal school log in) then click done. Go back to Socrative and try
logging in again. If it still doesn’t work try the good ol’ turn it on and off again.
2. You can’t remember your log in (you cannot log on because your password is incorrect)
a. Go to the main log in page- click on forgotten password. You will then be sent a link to the email
address you registered with- follow the instructions online from there.
3. You try to register but it freezes
a. This is surprisingly common when you register. Don’t worry- close the app and try logging in with
the details you just registered with. 9 times out of 10 this works. If it doesn’t- check your internet
connection and re-register.
4. You try to start a quiz but it says activity/quiz in progress:
a. On the top of your dashboard on the right hand side next to the refresh icon there will be a tap with
red text saying activity or quiz in progress. Click on this and then click finish (top right). This may
then prompt you to have the report sent to you. If the activity was accidentally started then simply
click view later and click submit.
5. You are running a quiz but the results don’t update
a. If this happens click refresh (top right hand corner- it’s a very small icon)
6. You import a quiz but it says it’s unsuccessful
a. Check to make sure that the SOC number is correct and written in the correct format –SOC-XXXXX
where X is a number.
b. If it is correct then it is due to the fact that the number on the internet is incorrect (yes
unfortunately this does happen- try and find a different quiz )
