PREFACE
Since 1896, the Elkhart County Historical Society has been collecting printed materials,
manuscripts, photographs and artifacts relating primarily to the history of Elkhart County,
Indiana. Since 1968 the collections have been located at the Elkhart County Historical Museum
at Rush Memorial Center, the former Washington Township High School, in Bristol, Indiana.
The museum is supported by Elkhart County under the administration of the Elkhart County Park
and Recreation Department, and also by funds from the Elkhart County Historical Society. The
museum is open to the public Tuesdays through Fridays from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. and
Sundays from 1:00 until 5:00 p.m. The library is open during museum open hours. The museum
is closed in December and January and on staff holidays.
The collections are non-circulating and are not loaned out through interlibrary loan. Free
assistance is given to researchers who visit the museum. An hour of free staff research time also
is offered to those who cannot visit; however, there is a charge for additional time. The staff
provides photocopying, microfilm copying, and photograph copying services, also for a fee.
Membership in the Society, while having no bearing on access to research services, will bring
news of Elkhart County Historical Society programs and activities. The annual individual
membership fee is $10.00; family membership, $15.00; life membership, $150.00. For assistance
and information, write Diana Zornow, Assistant Director, Elkhart County Historical Museum,
Rush Memorial Center, P. O. Box 434, Bristol, IN 46507. Telephone: 574-848-4322; fax,
574-848-5703; email, [email protected].
RESEARCH TIPS
It is important to realize, when beginning to search for information in the museum, that
due to the wealth and diversity of the Society’s collections, there are many different sources on a
given topic in numerous locations in the building. Staff members and volunteers will aid you in
exploring the various sources, and in most cases will retrieve the items. It is seldom possible to
locate everything in a short time. In fact, it is always a good idea to make a prior appointment, so
that the staff member can begin to check on pertinent items before your visit. Researchers are
asked to register and to handle the materials with care. Food and drink are not allowed in the
library or archives. Smoking is not allowed in the building.
SCOPE OF THIS GUIDE
Due to considerations of space, this guide focuses primarily on materials pertinent to the
history of Elkhart County, Indiana. There are additional items in the collections which pertain to
nearby counties in Indiana and Michigan and especially to the history of the state of Indiana.
This is the fifth edition of this guide. It has been compiled and edited by Martha M.
Pickrell, volunteer archivist, with aid from Diana Zornow, assistant director of the museum, who
is in charge of research, library and archives functions, and in the past from volunteer librarian
Bette Burrell, who with her husband Eugene founded the museum’s library in 1968.

Indexes to Elkhart County Recorder’s Records
In 1999 the Elkhart County Historical Society acquired from the owners of the former
Simpson/Elkhart County Abstract Company some very useful indexes compiled by the company
over the years to Elkhart County Recorder’s records. These large bound volumes are located in
the archives. They include the following:
Deed Indexes (index by surname to County Recorder’s Deed Books), 1831 - 1877 (11
vols.; missing vol. 7, 1871-1873). Like similar indexes in the Recorder’s office, these include all
the basic information on land transactions, including names of grantor and grantee, property
description, date, price, and book and page number. Note: unlike the indexes in the Recorder’s
office, names within a letter are not alphabetized. Vol. 6 has pages missing. Vol. 1 is difficult to
read because of fading ink.
General Index, c. 1830-1877 (2 vols.). Master surname index to the first 52 Deed Books.
Contains names, book page numbers only. Strict alphabetizing makes it a quick reference.
Companion set of Indexes to Deed Books, organized by property description, c.
1831-1899 (11 vols.). These are in three series: A, c. 1831-Nov. 1865; B, Dec. 1865-1899; and
C, 1883-1899. All rural areas, cities and towns are included, with essential information about
each transaction. It is possible to trace the history of a piece of property very quickly using these
books.
Three other sets of indexes are organized by date. These include: Indexes to Mortgages,
Mechanic’s Liens and other miscellaneous items, 1856-1907 (5 vols.); Index to Tax Sales,
1841-c.1931 (3 vols.); and Index to (court) Judgments, 1861-1965 (4 vols.) The Mortgage
volumes are subdivided by town/township, which is useful. See also Indexes to Archival
Materials.

INDEXES TO ARCHIVAL MATERIALS IN THE SOCIETY’S COLLECTIONS
An extensive alphabetical card index to surnames in certain archival collections of the
Elkhart County Historical Society was created in the 1980s as a project of the Elkhart County
Genealogical Society and the Elkhart County Historical Society. The project was directed by
Betty Huster. Primary emphasis is on the years 1830 to 1865, with later entries as well. Most of
the records chosen for indexing were local government records. The bulk of this card index is
located in the library. A special section indexing divorces, adoptions and naturalizations
(extracted from certain court records) is filed in the archives. For identification of records that
have been included in this Surname Index, see 6. Local Government Records.
11
INDEXES AND LISTINGS - E.C.H.S. ARCHIVES (continued)
Indexes to individual record groups or collections of Local Government Records in the
archives include, among others, an extensive document index to the Auditor/Commissioners
Papers (contains some names) and a surname index to Clerk/Coroner’s Inquests. Located in the
archives. See also Michiana Searcher Indexes; 6. Local Government Records.
An ongoing project is an index to a multi-volume collection of abstract books donated to
the Society by the owners of the former Simpson/Elkhart County Abstract Company, primarily
but not exclusively pertaining to the city of Elkhart. A number of the volumes have been indexed
by surname and by property description. Since this extensive card index is in the process of being
computerized, some of it is still on cards, some on printout. Index located in the archives.

6. LOCAL GOVERNMENT RECORDS
As the oldest historical organization in the county, the Elkhart County Historical Society
is an officially designated local repository for county, township, municipal and school
corporation records which have been released by those agencies.
The Society’s collections consist of more than 400 cubic feet of original records, plus 29
rolls of microfilm. A large proportion of the records have come from the County Clerk’s and
County Auditor’s offices. Other agencies represented include the County Assessor,
Commissioners, Health Department, Highway Dept., Poor Farm (County Home), Recorder,
Sheriff, Surveyor, Treasurer, and Voter Registration; Township Trustees, Advisory Boards and
Justices of the Peace; county and town school corporations; and municipal government.
In many cases, the microfilms are copies of original records in the Society’s collections.
Where possible, use of the microfilm is preferred to save wear and tear on the original document.
Items in the collections have been numbered and listed in looseleaf inventory books and,
much more briefly, on catalog cards. They are grouped and inventoried by department. Since
transfer of many of the records (prior to strict state regulations) took place in an informal fashion,
occasional errors in attribution to departments may have been made. Detailed indexes to portions
of the collections have been prepared, and in the library there is a general Surname Index to many
of the earlier records. (See 1. Indexes/Indexes to Archival Materials.) Some records also have
internal indexes; however, the term “Index” as used in this section of the Guide means indexes
prepared by museum staff and volunteers.
The following list attempts to group the records in a sequence of optimum use to
repositories and researchers. Some groups of records must of necessity be described briefly.
+ = microfilm available at museum in addition to original
* = included in Surname Index in library

payment presented by government officials. Each volume contains a topical index to major items
covered in the sessions.
COUNTY COMMISSIONERS’ PAPERS (AUDITOR)
Elkhart County Auditor: Commissioners’ Papers and related records, 1831-1935 (77
boxes; over 100,000 items). A significant portion of these papers were originally filed by the
Auditor to accompany the permanent Commissioners’ Record. While some of the documents
also were copied in full into that record, in most cases the papers contain additional detail, such
as lists of names and descriptions of services. Even where lists are included in the
Commissioners’ Record, these documents contain the original signatures, which can be of
interest to a family researcher. * to 1862, later in some cases.
Please note that the documents, though voluminous, are no longer complete, and that
there are fewer documents after 1914. In addition to written and typed documents, there are
blueprints, maps, diagrams and bonds. A detailed card index lists thousands of the documents
under subject headings and contains some names. The records fall into these general types:
Administrative reports, which were filed at intervals by local public officials. Among
those of historical interest are reports of Township and School Corporation Trustees and Road
Supervisors, the County Sheriff (including Jail records), County Poor Farm Superintendent,
County Grand Juries and Boards of Charities, County Health Officer, County School
Superintendent and Truant Officer.
Petitions, remonstrances, meeting and election reports, contracts detail the history of
roads, bridges, ditches and other public works, incorporations of towns, controversies over liquor
licenses, fencing in of livestock, building of railroads, appointments and resignations of officials,
and many other matters. Petitions each contain dozens of names.
47

Civil War soldiers’ bounties*, daily life of the poor farm, coroners’ inquests, and bounties for
destroying wild animals, as well as on local businesses, tradesmen, and others who supplied
services. Various institutions such as the orphanage at Mishawaka and state schools and asylums
list services given to Elkhart County residents.
Organizations, local businesses, railroads and utilities submitted reports, usually for
taxation purposes, which list their officials or members, their purposes, and financial
information.

9. ADDITIONAL SOURCES
VERTICAL FILES
The vertical files (20 drawers), located in the library, are very frequently used and
constantly added to. They contain historical sketches, reminiscences, manuscripts of papers
presented at Historical Society meetings, newspaper features and clippings, pamphlets, programs,
advertisements, small manuscript groupings, research correspondence, and other items. They are
organized geographically (16 drawers) and by surname (4 drawers).
Some of the topics typically found in a drawer (a complete list would be far too long to
include here) are Bands, Banks, Bridges, Buildings, Businesses, Cemeteries, Churches, Civil
War, Fires, History (general), Homes, Libraries, Organizations, Parades, Parks, Rivers, Schools,
Sports, Street Scenes, Wars, and others.
BUSINESS PUBLICATIONS
A collection of publications of well over 150 local businesses from throughout the county
(10 boxes) contains catalogs and other advertising materials, company newsletters, and annual
reports. Some of the larger groups of publications come from the following companies: Buescher
Band Instrument Co., C. G. Conn, Ltd. (now United Musical Instruments), Excel Industries, Inc.,
Miles Inc. (now Bayer), and the Selmer Company, all of Elkhart; and Goshen Manufacturing Co.,
Goshen Sash & Door Co., and I-XL Furniture Co., all of Goshen. An overflow of the vertical
files, these may be found near the Business Records section in the archives.
PHOTOGRAPHS AND POST CARDS
The museum’s approximately 15,000 photographs are located in archival collections, in
the library and in other areas, as well as in exhibit areas of the museum. In 2001, a project was
begun to catalog and digitize some of the more historically valuable photographs in the museum.
Approximately 3,000 photographs have been organized in acid-free boxes in a special storage
cabinet, in the library, manually catalogued and scanned. They are currently being entered into
the Past Perfect computer data base.
In addition, a collection of several hundred post cards, organized geographically, is
located in the office.
MUSEUM DISPLAYS
Much information is to be found in museum displays. Of particular note are individual
township displays in the Township Room.

10. SPECIAL NOTE: ELKHART COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY LIBRARY
The Elkhart County Genealogical Society is an active research organization with its own
library. It maintains a full schedule of activities for its members and the public throughout the
year. It publishes a quarterly, Michiana Searcher, as well as cemetery listings and other guides to
local records. Like the Elkhart County Historical Society, it is a registered nonprofit organization.
The society has cooperated in a number of projects with the Elkhart County Historical
Society, and for many years its annual fall full-day workshop has been held in the auditorium
adjoining the museum. In October 2004, at the invitation of Elkhart County Historical Society
and with the approval of the Elkhart County Park and Recreation Department, the society has
moved its library from its former location to the Elkhart County Historical Museum. The Sailor
Memorial Library, located in a room in the lower level across from the archives, is now open to
the public during the same hours as the museum. Like the museum’s library, it is a
non-circulating library.
The collections of the Elkhart County Genealogical Society significantly complement
those of the Elkhart County Historical Society. Among its major holdings are more than 300 rolls
of microfilm filmed by the Church of the Latter Day Saints Library’s County Records of Indiana
Microfilm Project (CRIMP). Volunteers from the Elkhart County Genealogical Society provided
about 3,000 hours of work toward the fulfillment of this project.
The CRIMP collection includes the following records originating with the Elkhart County
Clerk: probate files, 1830-1920 (including separate probate files for Elkhart city, 1900-1920);
minor heirs and guardianships; wills, 1907-1921; marriage licenses, Dec. 25, 1910-Dec. 29,
1920; marriage license applications, Dec. 14-30, 1915; marriage consent records, 1911-1920;
delayed birth applications, 1942-1957; and mixed court cases.
These microfilmed records are especially important to researchers because the paper
records from which they were created are not easily accessible. Indexes to the CRIMP
microfilmed records are available online under the category Archives/Crimp Project on the
Elkhart County INGenWeb Project web site at <www.rootsweb.com/~inelkhar/>. The society
suggests that after checking the indexes, a researcher visit the library, contact the society by mail,
or if they are not nearby, check the nearest Latter Day Saints genealogy research facility.
Another important collection consists of more than 200 family genealogies pertaining to
the Elkhart County area. The society has many additional books and genealogical quarterlies
from Indiana, surrounding states, and beyond.
Further information on membership and collections is available from the Elkhart County
Genealogical Society by mail at P.O. Box 1031, Elkhart IN 46515-1031.
