b. 10 Graduation Memories of HazelWiggins, Hazel CarolineCategory: Memory Books. School Books.

GRADUATION MEMORIES OF HAZEL. The title page says: LIFE'S FIRST MAJORTASK COMPLETED. EVENTS THAT WILL NEVER FADE FROM THE MEMORY OF"Hazel Caroline Wiggins." The name was filled in by the owner of the book. Shegraduated June 12, 1930 and two little snippets of blue and silver fabric from hergraduation gown were saved. She graduated from Duluth Central High School,Duluth, Minnesota. Tucked in the book are her graduation announcement, theprogram from the commencement, the program from "Class Night," and thebulletin from the preceding Sunday from her church the First Methodist Churchfrom a service dedicated to the new graduates. It seems a bit poignant. Shefilled out the page listing her gifts and her activities the day of graduation, butno friends or faculty signed and there were no clubs or dances or parties. Anexample of her entries: On June 8th she returned from the church service andwrote: "On returning home I found no one home so spent most of the day bymyself except that I went down to Leif Ericcson [sic] Park in the afternoon andlistened to the concert given by Duluth Central's High School Band. One of thenumbers was "America." Everyone stood up and it was quite thrilling to see peoplestanding all over the hillside and the band playing. In the evening I studied awhilefor examinations, and then sat out in the porch swing with Mrs. Bendickson, oneof Newell Bendickson's friends threw a ball through the window next door." Thepages are held together but the staples pulled loose from the spine. The bookmeasures 7" x 5 1/4". There are some scratches on the suede as you can see in thepicture.

A small cardboard box, yellow with age, may serve very well asa movie prop but it is a sorry container for the precious and irreplacable leapto life once again, reminders that make up the color and patterns of a child'slife. Cherished memories of the past are recalled and live again as you turn thepages of this Scrapbook. Built in 1910 the high school opened just as the formerly quiet hamlet ofHollywood was first being overrun by movie producers. By the 20s, it becamethe school of choice for the children of movie stars. But as the neighborhoodgrew more seedy with the passing years, and with a change in school districtboundaries, most of the well-to-do Hollywood parents stopped sending theirchildren to Hollywood High, opting instead for schools like Beverly Hills High andSanta Monica High.

"We have purposely omitted numerous sub-headings on the white sheetsto enable you to enter your own data, as the occasion may require--such aspromotions, transfers, furloughs, maneuvers, athletics, range records, etc. / Wesuggest keeping SNAPS and SCRAPS in the mailing box--it will not only keepit clean but can be used for remailing if you should desire to send 'SNAPS andSCRAPS' home for your parents, wife or sweetheart to keep up to date for you."

"Snaps and Scraps has been developed in accordance with personal views andpreferences of men in the services. They expressed a section of white paper, suitable for writing with ink, on which they could record their military life. Themost decided preferfence was for a pocket to file the clippings, photos, lettersfrom home and miscellaneous material, until ready to mount in the SNAP orSCRAP sections, or otherwise to be disposed of. / The flexible cover permits rollingof the entire book if so desired. The size is not large enough to be cumbersome inthe limited storage space available to service men."
