Interesting facts...

Average monthly weather guide

The United States is an enormous country, stretching for some 2,680 miles coast to coast, so climates and weather can vary quite drastically by season and location. During the summer months (June to August), northern states enjoy warm days and cooler mornings and nights, while southern states and tropical areas experience very hot temperatures. In autumn, (September to November), temperatures begin to cool down around the country. It’s a particularly beautiful season in northern regions as the leaves change to shades of red, yellow and orange. Winter (December to February) is fairly mild in the southern states, while the northern, north-eastern, midwestern, western mountains and Great Plains regions often encounter snow and colder temperatures. During the spring (March to May), temperatures begin to warm up and thunderstorms and rainstorms are common across the country into the summer months.

The United States of America is 242 years old this year: The Declaration

of Independence was signed in 1776

Explore the dramatic desert landscape

Las Vegas’ proximity to the desert isn’t as inhospitable as it seems. How about cycling around nearby Red Rock Canyon? Or take a kayak tour from the Hoover Dam down the Colorado River canyon culminating with a hike into the desert to some natural hot springs?

Take a larger bite of the ‘Big Apple’Holidays to NYC aren’t all about shopping and shows. Whilst art galleries might not be the first places that spring to mind when you think of New York, the Museum of Modern Art should be high on your list of excursions. The MOMA is located in Midtown Manhattan and houses some 200,000 works of modern and contemporary art, including Monet’s Water Lilies and Dalí’s The Persistence of Memory.

Head to a music festivalIf you are lucky enough to be in Los Angeles in April, how about combining your sightseeing with a trip out to the Empire Polo Club in Indio for one of the USA’s biggest festivals, Coachella?

See a different side to San FranciscoFort Point offers some wonderful views of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge but how about seeing it from the other shore? Hike the Presidio on the strait’s western shoreline where Baker Beach offers spectacular views of the bridge.

the USAA Taste of

HAMBURGERS

A US staple, nobody does hamburgers like the

Americans! From cheap and cheerful to classic and

gourmet, you’ll find every type of burger imaginable

here. For a real taste of America, find yourself a diner,

enjoy some fries on the side and wash it all down with a

root beer float! This is about as American as it gets!

CORN DOGS

Another American classic, a corn dog is a hot dog sausage

coated in a thick layer of cornmeal batter on a stick. Add

some mustard and ketchup and enjoy!

BARBECUE RIBS

Americans are serious about their barbecue and whilst

you can find pretty good barbecue fare almost anywhere

in the country, the best places to eat this US classic are in

the centre of the country.

CLAM CHOWDER

If you’re spending any time on the coast in New England,

you simply must try the clam chowder. A creamy, potato-

filled chowder, this traditional taste of New England will

delight your palate!

APPLE PIE

American as apple pie! Apple pie crossed the Atlantic

with the pilgrims and made itself at home in the USA.

Today, it’s one of the nation’s favourite dishes and the

quintessential American desert.

Chat with the localsThe official language of the USA is English but the Americans do have their own sayings and colloquialisms! To help you feel like a local when you’re exploring, here are a few phrases for you to try!

For realMeaning: a proclamation of honesty

BailMeaning: intransitive verb for leaving abruptly

CrashMeaning: to abruptly fall asleep, or to show up without invitation

HypedMeaning: a very excited state

SweetMeaning: an adjective that describes something that is good, or nice

Take a raincheckMeaning: a metaphor for postponing or rescheduling a meeting to some later date that is more convenient. This dates back to the 1880s and references the practice of giving baseball game ticketholders a pass to a game that must be rescheduled due to weather.

Shoot the breezeMeaning: killing time with idle chit-chat, ‘shoot the breeze’ probably stems from old-west imagery in which men with nothing but time and ammunition on their hands shot their guns at no particular target.
