WKU GUIDE WKU GUIDE

Dear WKU Parents:The annual Parent and Family Weekend is a great time for WKU parents and families to meet fellow parents, WKU students, as well as WKU faculty and staff. I specifically invite you to join us for our an-nual Festival on the Green on Saturday September 22 at 3:30 p.m. in the Topper Café on South Lawn, in front of the Hattie B. Preston Health and Activities Center. There will be great food, music, and fellowship for all to enjoy. Please make plans to attend the football game at 6:00 p.m. as WKU welcomes the Golden Eagles of Southern Mississippi to Houchens-L.T. Smith Stadium. Ticket information is included in this mailer. Please return this reservation form or register on-line at www.wku.edu/pfw to ensure an accurate count for the 3:30 p.m. meal. The WKU Parents’ Council is a group of leaders, which includes parents of a wide range of WKU students. They have planned a grand weekend for you, so it is important that we hear from you and get acquainted with as many WKU parents, and brothers and sisters as possible. The Parents’ Council, as well as our faculty and staff, seek to ensure the best quality of life for our students. We have had two sons, a daughter-in-

With our first daughter, Megan, many hours had been spent planning, organizing, shopping, and packing in preparation for this new chapter in her life. It didn’t matter how prepared we were, it was still a tremendously emotional experience for everyone involved. We worried about how she would adjust to campus life and be able to live without us. When she stopped coming home on weekends because she was too involved in campus life, we knew she was all right. With our second daughter, Mary Katherine, the emotions and worry were still there, but she adjusted quickly and we survived. She quickly engaged herself in campus activities and loves being a part of the WKU family. Now a senior in the Honors College, she is working just as diligently as ever to earn her degree in Psychology and become a WKU graduate. You will soon realize that WKU will become your child’s “home away from home.” The university not only provides a quality education, but also a safe environment, caring administrators, and many activities for your child to become involved in order to enhance his or her college days. “Life on the hill” will help instill integrity and character in your young adult and they will become mature, well-rounded individuals as they progress through their college years. As parents, we continue to visit the WKU campus as often as possible. At home we can keep in touch with campus news and activities via the on-line College Heights Herald, WKU website, Alumni Association homepage, WKU Spirit Magazine and even

Welcome to WKU!One of the biggest days in a child’s life is the day they move into

their college residence hall for the first time. We remember this

event as if it were yesterday. The excitement and anticipation

while driving to Bowling Green to deliver our child into the

capable hands of the WKU family was almost over-whelming.

on Facebook. We are currently serving as Co-Chairs for the Parents’ Council, which represents the Parents’ Association. If we can answer any of your questions or concerns, from a parents’ perspective, please feel free to contact us and we will do our best to assist you. We encourage you to be an active part of this transition by joining and supporting the WKU Parent’s Association. Sometime soon, take time to walk across this beautiful campus and feel the magic! WKU is REALLY a place for your child to be somebody! The motto of WKU is “The Spirit Makes the Master” and that spirit is alive and well today!

WKU TraditionsBig Red

Big Red, WKU’s athletic mascot, was born in the fall of 1979 and will celebrate its 32nd birthday in December. The huge, furry, lovable creature was originally designed and built by WKU student Ralph Carey (‘80) of Cincinnati, and made its debut during the Hilltoppers’ 1979-80 basketball season.

Big Red was a part of the NCAA’s “Mascot Mania” Exhibit and was on the ballot for Raymond Entertainment’s Mascot Hall of Fame. Since 2002, Big Red has also been selected into the Capital One All-America Mascot Team eight of the ten years of its existence.

The Red Towel

WKU’s unique “Red Towel” tradition originated with the late E.A. Diddle, one of the most successful coaches in history. Through 1,062 Hilltopper basketball games, Diddle clutched a red towel. He chewed on it, threw it, cried on it, waved it at fans and used it to signal his players. Former Hilltopper athlete, coach, and athletics director John Oldham developed the concept of WKU’s Red Towel athletics logo in 1971.
