DEGREE PROGRAMME IN CIVIL ENGINEERING

Bachelor of Engineering

SUSTAINABLE BUILDING ENGINEERING

The current requirements for both existing buildings and new construction pose major challenges for engineers

especially in terms of mitigating climate change. At the same time, buildings should be made healthier for people to live and work in, while burdening natural resources to a lesser extent. Meeting these challenges requires a new kind of professional – a sustainable building engineer.

As a sustainable building engineer you will, for example, compare different construction and building services (heating, ventilating, air conditioning etc.) to fi nd optimal solutions forindoor environment and energy effi ciency. You will also be able to assess the environmental effects of buildings by means of environmental assessment tools (such as LEED or BREEAM). At the building site, you will know how to use recycled materials, minimize the amount of waste created and prevent environmental damage. As a facility manager, you will know how to cut the use of energy and other resources. You may fi nd a job in the new low-carbon and low-energy sectors, serving society’s needs for genuine sustainable development, both in real terms and on the social level. You may take part in export project tasks, international tasks, or municipal or state development tasks. The job options cover a wide range of positions in design and development, product support, consulting, and marketing. The studies will also encourage entrepreneurship.

This international programme in English will focus on sustainable building engineering. The programme contains courses in construction engineering, indoor environment and energy effi ciency, life cycle engineering and facility management.

The programme also involves general engineering skills such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, information and communication technologies (ICT), computer-aided design (CAD) and building information models (BIM). A signifi cant part (over 60 credits) of the studies will be carried out in practical labour market projects and work placement, starting from the fi rst study year and ending in a fi nal work, usually commissioned by our partners in the industry. An international exchange of at least four months will be included in the third-year curriculum.
