BEFORE YOU GET STARTED WITH ESSENTIAL OILS, KEEP THESE GUIDELINES IN MIND. Use carrier oils such as coconut, jojoba, or sweet almond to dilute essential oils that may burn skin. Oils should be diluted further for children and pregnant women. Always keep essential oils away from your eyes, avoid contact with mucus membranes, and don’t put them inside the ear canal. Conduct a skin test the first time you use an oil. If redness or skin irritation occurs, dilute the area with vegetable oil. Keep all essential oils out of the reach of children. Avoid eucalyptus and rosemary if pregnant or breastfeeding. Avoid peppermint if breastfeeding (it can decrease supply). To learn more, visit the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy.
