QUALITIES FOR A COMPETENT EXAMINER

1. HIGH LANGUAGE COMPETENCY

a) Thorough knowledge of English Language Syllabus and the Year 6 HSP for English Language

b) Possess excellent vocabulary

c) Able to detect subtle nuances1 common to the language

d) Able to identify and mark common and not common syntax used by candi-dates

2. FAIR AND WISE

a) Indifferent to race or creed

b) Possess great empathy (able to understand candidates’ problems or difficul-ties)

3. VALIDITY

a) Correct and acceptable marking

b) True to the marking scheme

4. RELIABILITY

a) Consistent (when marking various levels of answers)

b) Steadfast2

CONSTRUCTING COMPLEX SENTENCES

1. NAME + WHO + ACTION + ACTION

Puan Lily, who is wearing a scarf , is sweeping the compound.

2. NAME + ADJECTIVE + ACTION

Linda, a helpful pupil, is helping her teacher to carry her heavy bag.

3. NAME + OCCUPATION + ACTION + ACTION

Encik Ahmad, the bread vendor, who is wearing a helmet, is selling bread and

cakes to his customers.

4. NAME + OCCUPATION + ACTION + WHILE + ACTION

Pn Nora, the teacher, is showing her pupils how to make paper flowers while

sitting on the floor.

5. NAME + DESIGNATION + ACTION + WHILE + ACTION

Farah and Siti, two active children, are in their tracksuits while waiting for their

coach to train them .

UPSR 014/2: SECTION A @ QUESTION 1

GENERAL GUIDELINES

PUPILS are ALLOWED to:

a) use any tense they want for any sentence

b) use any names for people

c) ignore words given

d) change the form of verbs given

e) write in any order (“flow” or “story line” not necessary)

UPSR 014/2: SECTION B @ QUESTION 2 (a)

GENERAL GUIDELINES

EXAMINERS are REQUIRED to:

a) award 1 mark for each answer with correct spelling and punctuation

b) give no marks for any answer with spelling or punctuation error

c) show NO LINIENCY when marking

To assess candidates’ ability to transfer information accurately and appropriately

SYMBOLS DEFINITIONS CLARIFICATIONS

Merit Every correct sentence put a tick at the end of the sentence.

Double Merit For every sentence or new word /sentence / expression that is used correctly.

Omission A word missed out in a sentence.

R Repetition For word used repeatedly in a sentence or sen-tences when it can be replaced by a pronoun.

O Oval Punctuation Punctuation errors made when writing. i.e Uppercase / lowercase / comma / full stop.

Vocabulary

Inappropriate word / vocabulary The word used gives a different meaning or incorrect used of word. i.e. paints-pains / hit-heat-fit / planned-planed.

________ Single line

Grammatical error Error related to any aspect of grammar what-ever it needs to be replaced or not, especially on sentence forms and functions

Double lines Structural error When there is more than one grammatical error continuously in one sentence or phrase.

______? Question mark Unclear meaning A sentence or phrase which has confusion in meaning.

sp Spelling error

Word which is wrongly spelled but does not give another meaning. i.e. fence-fent / finish-finised / sweeping-sweaping

Double vertical lines

Total distortion / blatant irrelevancy Use this symbol when sentences does not make any sense. * Put the symbols at the right side of the paper and write blatant irrelevancy.

SYMBOLS DEFINITIONS CLARIFICATIONS

Rd Redundant

Repeating word with the same meaning / word that is not needed. i.e. Durian fruit / repeat again / went back home / red in colour / thank to him

Word order Word wrongly positioned. i.e. also can = can also.

( ) Parenthesis / Bracket Chunk or stingy (part of the sentence correct) A part of a sentence that is comprehensible.

[ ] Square bracket

Not related to subject matter Word or phrase that is not related to subject matter. i.e. in describing pictures given. Notes: Use for Section A & B

Bridge Close up the space / it should be in one word.

/ Slash Separated A space needed here or insert a space or the word should be separated.

‘ Single inverted commas or single quotation mark

It is used when the word does not exist in the English language or used for names of books, movies, etc. i.e. ‘baju kurung’, ‘nasi lemak’
