PURPOSE OF ASSIGNING PROJECT – To provide guidelines for piping

designers & site engineers

EXPECTED OUTCOME – Standardization of Piping Layouts Methods

BACKGROUND OF THE PROJECT –

For all municipal project orders, there are various piping involved with material of

construction Ductile Iron, MS, GI & HDPE. At the time of designing, it is very

repetitive to explain what the precaution measures to be taken while designing &

laying the piping. For site engineers, there are no guidelines available for piping

routing,

PPROBLEM STATEMENT -

At present there are no specific guidelines available for piping layout design &

piping routing which will be helpful for piping engineers & site engineers. There is

always new site engineer or piping design engineers for new project. To avoid

mistakes in piping designing & erection and to reduce the time for explaining the

basic concept of piping, the guidelines / manual was essential,

INTRODUCTION

This is very important to go through the design requirements before starting of piping

design & erection.

This manual covers the typical layout of the piping at various locations like submersible

pump delivery, blower discharge, Sludge pump discharge etc. For any project the

arrangement of piping at given locations should be maintained same. The piping

arrangements are given considering the basic requirement of process as well as

operation & maintenance point of view.

Additionally the manual covers type of valves & its construction details for

understanding to the site engineers.

The manual covers the precautions to be taken while designing / erection of piping. It is

essential to check the piping as per given instruction.

It also covers the supporting & hardware requirement of the piping. The site engineers

should take care while providing bolts & nuts of suitable sizes in the piping.

Finally there is a typical plant model provided with all civil structures, mechanical

equipments & respective piping which is very useful to understand & construct

accordingly.

TYPICAL AREA OF PIPING

A) SUBMERSIBLE PUMP DISCHARGE

There is always requirement to provide reducer in the discharge line of the submersible

pump, since the delivery size of the pump is lesser than the given pipe line size in the

P&ID. The reducer should be always eccentric type. Because the distance between

guide pipe on the pump & the delivery flange is very less, If we provide concentric

reducer, there are chances to foul higher flange with the guide pipe. Hence the reducer

should be eccentric & eccentricity should be on the opposite side of the guide pipe. See

2D view for details in the next page.

B) PREESURE GUAGE TAPPING FOR DI PIPING

Generally the pressure gauge tapping is 25 NB with 15 NB drain. The minimum size

of DI pipe tee available is 80 NB. If we go for standard DI tee, then no of reducers

are required to be provided to install the PG. Instead it is recommended to provide

special DI distance piece with 25 NB MS tapping. Refer the 2D view below for

typical DI distance piece for details.

C) FLOW METER INSTALLATION FOR AIR LINE

The upstream & downstream distance for flow meter should be as follows

UPSTREAM = 10 x DIAMETER OF PIPE

DOWNSTREAM = 5 x DIAMETER OF PIPE

D) BLOWER DELIVERY PIPING ARRANGEMENT

TYPE-1 – There should be long radius bends connecting to main header at blower

discharge. This helps in reducing noise levels of the blowers

It is essential to provide vent connection as shown in the drawing. At the time of shut down of the plant, the pressure from

the headers should be released.

D) BLOWER DELIVERY PIPING ARRANGEMENT

TYPE-2 – If the area in the blower room is compact to accommodate long radius bends,

then the air header should be taken outside of the room. The air header can be put

underground & the blower connections can be connected in 45 deg angle to the main

header. This also helps in reducing noise levels of the blowers. If the piping is routed

underground, it should be painted with primer & then given wrapping & coating by tar

felt sheets.

E) SWING CHECK NRV AT PUMP DISCHARGE

The swing check valve at any pump discharge should be always in horizontal

position. Isolation valve (Butterfly type) can be given in vertical or horizontal piping.

F) DISTANCE BETWEEN WAFER CHECK NRV & BFV –

The distance between wafer check NRV & butterfly valve should be more than 2 x

dia of pipe. The disc of wafer type NRV & butterfly valve opens inside the pipe. To

allow sufficient distance for this movement 2D distance is required. Suppose pipe

dia is 200 NB, provide 400 mm distance between these types of valves.

G) TYPICAL PIPING AT SLUDGE PUMP SUCTION & DELIVERY

We can take suction from side & delivery from top side for screw pump. It is important to provide flushing line at

suction side of the pump. At the end of operation, screw pump along with delivery piping should be flushed with

service water to avoid chocking of the pump & piping. The sludge piping should not have looping i.e. the sludge piping

should not be routed up & down. This increases possibility of choking. After delivery header, sludge piping should

have rising elevation. The elevation should not come down once it is raised.

BUTTERFLY VALVE

A Butterfly Valve is used to control the flow of material through a circular pipe or tube.

• The interior of the valve body is lined with an elastomer seat.

• Seats may be made of EPDM, buna, viton, Teflon, natural rubber, carbox, chlorbutyl, white buna, or white neoprene as well as other materials.

• Choice of seat material depends on temperatures, pressures and material handled.

• Type – Wafer , Lug

• Application - Air, gas, steam, or liquid.

GATE VALVE

• The gate valve is the most widely used on/off valve for large diameter, full port applications. When the valve is fully open, it allows straight passage through an opening that is essentially the same size as the inside diameter of the connecting pipe, so there is little pressure drop through a gate valve.
