NEWSLETTER NO 17 - 20 October 2021 Dear Parents, Caregivers and Community Members Welcome back to the final school term. I hope all families had an enjoyable break with their children. Term 4 is certainly a very busy term with children undertaking various assessment tasks to complete the gathering of evidence for final Semester Reports. We also have swimming lessons in the last two weeks of term for students from PP – Year 6. Graduation for our Year 6 students, the wonderful finale to the school year with the presentation of book awards, many sporting events, excursions, plus all the learning programs within the classrooms. As you can see the journey of learning is a busy and exciting one for us all. Term 4 is a term in which children are expected to be independent and responsible for being organised for their learning and their personal achievements. They need to be able to do things for themselves and not have parents do it for them. I am positive that all parents will value the schools philosophy and support teachers in developing the potential of their child. There is a wonderful Chinese Proverb that we should all take heed from; Teachers open the door, but you must enter by yourself Children Leaving at the End of the Year Planning for the 2022 school year is underway. It would be appreciated if you could let the school know via email [email protected] if your child/ren will not be returning to Guildford Primary School in 2022. Thank you to parents who have already advised us of their intentions. Graduation Photos Next Tuesday 26 October at 9.00am the Year 6 students will be having their graduation photo taken. All Year 6 students will need to wear their leavers shirt for the photo. If your child does not have a leavers shirt then the red Guildford Primary School uniform shirt must be worn. The Year 6 students will receive a copy of the photo at their end of year graduation ceremony. Favourite Sports Team Colours Day On the last Friday of Term 3 the school was ablaze with colour as students and staff wore their favourite sports team colours. The money raised was donated to the Fight Cancer Foundation for Children. A total of $236.35 was raised. Thank you to all the students, teachers and parents for their support and participation. Staff Update This term we welcome Ms Jessica Gibbs as our Library Officer whilst we run the process of appointing a permanent Library Officer. Thank you to the staff, parents and children who have made Ms Gibbs feel very welcomed. Entry and Exit Through Front Gates Families, I ask your cooperation with ensuring that our students are kept safe when entering and exiting school grounds before and after school. Please use the small iron gate when entering and exiting the school. Many students and families have been using the larger vehicle entrance, which poses a potential risk to safety, as many vehicles and buses use this entrance. Once again I thank you for cooperation on this matter. Music News Last Wednesday we were lucky enough to have the music students from John Forrest Senior High School come and perform.

They arrived by bus with all their equipment: 40 students and 2 teachers. They then proceeded to set up in record time and tune up ready to play. True professionals.

The students and staff were treated to an approximately 45 minute long performance. It opened with the Swing or Jazz band and a male soloist, singing “Fly me to the moon” followed by male and female duet of “Hit the road Jack”.

This was followed by a flute duet of “Somewhere over the rainbow”, the 15 piece guitar ensemble playing “Inspiration” and a saxophone solo of “Careless whisper”.

The choir was phenomenal: doing both body percussion and singing acapella to “Bring me little water Sylvie” at the same time, as well as singing “Summertime”, from “Porgy and Bess”

Finally we were blown away with the with the big band classics of “It don’t mean a thing” and ‘Sing Sing Sing” made famous by Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman respectively.

The children beautifully behaved, perhaps partly due to the fact that they were mesmerised and amazed at how good these children were, and that they were only slightly older than some of them.

It was also nice to see some the instruments that we have been learning about, in real life, and hearing the sounds they make, and seeing their real size.

The feedback about the event, upon reflection by the children, was thoughtful and insightful and overwhelmingly positive. Everyone found something that they enjoyed and 98% of children asked if they could come back again!

I definitely think that we might be learning some of these Jazz, crooner and swing standards! The music from the pre and post -war era was very popular with the children. I was so proud and pleased at how engaged and well behaved all the children at Guildford Primary School were, but it has been what I have come to expect from them, and they never fail to deliver.

Let’s hope they can come again next year!

Jessica Jefferies, Music teacher
