Dear parents and carers,

It was an extremely busy week to end the term with many students participating in the coal miners cup, sports rep trials, Gala days, the final evening of 7s Rugby as well as State swimming at Homebush in Sydney.

The choir and practice for the Gunnedah Eisteddfod is underway and we are very fortunate to have Mr Brown and Mrs Christie to provide expertise in the area of performing arts.

Displays for the Show were finalised, and show entries put in. Thank you to all staff involved in setting up the South school display.

We have many extra programs and learning opportunities provided at South, and I cannot thank the staff enough for always taking on extra tasks in order for the students to have as many of these opportunities as possible.

Uniform Change We will have a ‘transition period’ from summer to winter uniform for the first 2 weeks of the term.

For the first 2 weeks of term 2, students will be able to wear their summer OR winter uniform depending on the weather.

At the beginning of week 3, which is the 14th May 2018, all students will be expected to wear their full winter uniform.

The uniform shop here at school stocks everything required; other than the girls winter tunic.

ANZAC DAY

ANZAC Day is the Wednesday of the second

week of the holidays. South has always had a

large representation of students marching as a

sign of respect to those who have served our

country.

Time: 10am

Where: Mitre 10 Carpark

Wear: Full summer uniform and hat.

Bring: Students may carry a drink bottle with them if needed.

The march will begin at 10:40 sharp.

Congratulations and Farewell to Mrs Worley

Congratulations to Mrs Shanyn Worley who has been appointed as the Principal of Attunga Public School. Shanyn has been a classroom teacher for 18 years at Gunnedah South and has taken on leadership roles as Assistant Principal S2 whilst here. Mrs Worley has been the relieving Principal at Tambar Springs Public School since the beginning of 2017 and will now be the permanent Principal of Attunga.

We thank her for her hard work and dedication to the students she has taught and the staff she has mentored and supervised.

On behalf of the staff, students and entire South school community, I wish her every success in her new role as Principal.

S3 Choir It was my pleasure last Tuesday to be invited to the S3 Choir practice.

WOW! Finding words to describe the choir at practice is difficult. Listening to these students sing made me feel ‘tingly’.

They were concentrating, enjoying themselves, confident, AMAZING!

Mr Brown is an engaging conductor and Mrs

Passfield and Mrs Merlehan can’t stop smiling they are so proud of these students. This group of students not only sing well together, but are obviously supportive of one another and are relishing the teamwork!

Well done to you all.

Show Success There were many entries from South students in this

year’s Gunnedah Show. Entries included writing,

artwork, photography, cooking and produce. Thank

you to Mrs Cooper, Mrs Keeler Mrs Sams, Ms

Stanger for organising entries from the kitchen and

garden. Also to Miss Tudgey and Miss Reynolds and

their team for their organisation.

Results include...

Our Fabulous P and C One of the South school’s P and C fund raising initiatives is the annual Gunnedah Show clean up. On Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday mornings, members of the school community came out in force to clean up the showground.

It is actually very pleasant , with many parents, students and staff walking together, chatting and laughing in the early morning, and not an arduous task at all.

Below is just a snapshot of those who volunteered their time on Sunday morning; please note that there were many, many more who were not pictured.

Special mention must go to the students, former students and parents who volunteered before work and school on Friday morning!

Current students included:

Sid Cooper, Phoebe Street, Claire and Charlie Barnes

Former students were Olivia Guest, Ben Neale and Lilly Street.

Thank you to Duncan Hill, branch manager of

Landmark Gunnedah for the use of their

truck, Andrew Stephens and James Goodall for

driving and to all the dads who loaded the bins

and took them to the tip. Your time was very

much appreciated.

It was noted that Mrs Donoghue was

unstoppable on Saturday morning, tossing bins

off the back of the truck. A huge effort!

Funds raised through the show clean up will go toward much needed concreting under the western gate shelter.

Thank you to all for a great

South School effort!

State Swimmers Students from South were well represented in the North West swimming squad and competed in individual and relay events at the Homebush aquatic Centre, Sydney during week 11.

The following information was received on Thursday concerning the relays.

Junior girls relay: 6.5 secs PB

Junior boys relay: 10 sec PB

Senior boys relay: 6 sec PB

Heading in to term 2, we are looking

forward to the arrival of Mr Peter Baum,

who will take up the permanent position of

Principal at Gunnedah South Public School.

It has been a pleasure to welcome Mr Baum

and have him visit the school over the past 2

weeks, and also to see Mrs Jeffery back to

support the transition to new principal.

It has been my pleasure to be the relieving

principal over the last 5 terms and I will

certainly miss all the titanium lunches! (A

treat not only for the deserving students).

As we enter another chapter with a new

leader, I am filled with excitement for the

future of Gunnedah South as a whole, but

most of all, for the students we educate.

My new position at South will be as Deputy

Principal- Instructional Leader; so I am very

much looking forward to working with

students and staff and being back in

classrooms.

Thank you all for your support while I have

been relieving as principal it has been my

pleasure and I look forward to seeing you all

in term 2.

I wish everyone a safe and relaxing holiday.

With warmest

regards,

Nicki Walsh

No act of Kindness,

no matter how small,

is ever wasted!

KINDNESS CHANGES THE WORLD!

The PBL focus this week was Kindness. Being kind shows respect for yourself and others, which is one

of our school values being Respectful. Students engaged in lessons and different activities around

kindness. All classes created a Kindness Chain. We have put this on display in the Library. This has

created many discussions amongst students, staff and visitors to the school. It has been pleasing to see

the ‘Acts of Kindness’ that have taken place within the school this week and encourage the use of

random acts of kindness- developing a pay it forward way of acting.

Kindness is not an act!

It’s a lifestyle!

This week Kyren and Tyren have been working hard in the MC class even

though it’s week 11 and the end of term. They have been learning to spell words

that begin with the blend ‘Sp’ and find word meanings in the dictionary.

They took a break from their work to have a yarn about what they like.

Kyren

If I could be an animal I would be a fish

as I like swimming.

I also like going to Subway so I can eat a

foot long and cookies.

I enjoy playing Rugby on Friday nights.

Tyren

If I could be an animal I would be a frilled

neck lizard.

I like going to porcupine lookout in the

car and looking at Gunnedah.

I play rugby and like tackling.

The Premiers Reading challenge is on again this year! It is a great way to get students reading. Students are able to choose books from a (very

long) list of books for their age level and read as many books as they can. K-2 are aiming for 30 books and 3-6 are aiming for 20. All books must be entered on the website (information provided on the next page) by 31st

August 2018! The aim is for students to challenge themselves and find

books that wouldn’t usually read. See Miss Reynolds in the Library for

more information or help entering

the books you have read.

Slight change in dates! The Book Fair will be here in week 3 of term 2. 14th-18th May! We can’t

wait to see what books are available Our borrowing challenge is off to a great start this year! Lots of students are remembering to bring in their library bags to borrow fit books for their classroom or to take home. 4R

have shot up the leader board this term to take first place! With a massive 169

points and 6 students with 100% borrowing for this term 4R will be

having a popcorn movie party in their Library lesson next week!

Congratulations 4R! Make sure you are bringing your library bag and borrowing

each week so you can earn point for

your class and beat them next term!

Save the Date!

Gunnedah South will be celebrating

Grandparents Day on Friday 15th June!

Gunnedah South has a long tradition of commemorating local servicemen and women and the spirit of ANZAC. Students are encouraged to participate in the ANZAC Day March on the 25th of April. This year ANZAC day falls during the school holidays. All students participating are to meet on the

roadside near Mitre 10 at 10.00am.

Summer uniform is to be worn by all students. As the weather is still quite warm students are

required to wear their red school hat and can carry a water bottle with them if they wish.

We had a great day out at the PSSA Rugby League trials All the players from Gunnedah South were excellent with a high standard of

play on show all day. The selectors had a tough time with finalising the teams. Cley Durrant, Owen Shoesmith and Chad Fisher

were selected in the Southern Zone teams to go to Tamworth. Gunnedah South students demonstrated outstanding Sportsmanship

throughout the day. A big thank you to Justin Fisher, Matt Durrant and Phil Shoesmith for their expert guidance of our teams.. A big

thank you must also go to Tash Fisher and the Gunnedah Junior Rugby League for the tre-mendous canteen and facilities provided on

The ‘Special Men’s Group’ Cooking

This week Mr. Silver, Mr. Gleeson and Mr Conn cooked cakes for the Gunnedah Show chocolate cake competition. They turned out pretty well

so the ladies at the CWA will have some tough decisions to make on Saturday. Mr Gleeson and Mr. Conn both voted Mr. Silver as the ‘Cake

Boss’ of the day. Thanks to Mrs Keeler for guiding us (especially Mr. Conn) for our cooking session. It was a lot of fun.

Primary Dance for Sport

During sport this Term, Stage 3 students have volunteered to participate in a Dance Program with Kerrilee Miller from T2K Dance. Students have been learning to use the

elements of dance to perform dance sequences to music. They are beginning to master their dance and are becoming more confident each week.

I was very impressed to see the progress they have made in such a short space of time.

Around the World with the

Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program (SAKG)

In the past month, students of Gunnedah South have been cooking up dishes from other

cultures. In weeks 5 and 6, students got a taste of China and looked at the Chinese New

Year Celebration. They cooked San Choy Bow, Chicken and Ginger Wontons and Fried Rice.

These recipes were made possible due to a wonderful bulk donation of chicken from

The Tamworth Steggles Shop.

During weeks 7 and 8, the children have had the pleasure of cooking some Moroccan

recipes. Spiced Carrot Salad, Chicken and Couscous Salad and Flat Bread were the

delicious dishes on the menu.

Thank you to The Tamworth Steggles Shop for the donation of chicken, Wholegrain

Milling, who continue to support the program by donating all of our flour. To Aldi who

donate fresh fruit and vegetables each week, that we are not able to grow, and to

Manildra for their kind donations of salt, sugar and oil. This support for our program is

greatly appreciated.

Science & History With 2LZ

I t has been a very busy few weeks in 2LZ with lots of hands of activities in science and history.

The children have been studying the History Unit,

‘The Past in the Present’. We have had lots of interesting discussions whilst exploring how things were in the past. As part of the discussion about

the purpose of museums and how things were discovered, we looked at fossils. Last week in class

we made our own trace fossils, using a dough made from flour, salt, coffee grounds and brewed

coffee. We have been very excited with the results.

Right: Tim, Arabella, Imagen and Deacon with their trace fossils.

In Science, the students have been learning about the needs of living things - water, shelter, energy and

oxygen, and where each of these come from.

Last week, the students made balloon rockets, with balloons, straws and string, demonstrating

how all things need energy to move. The students enjoyed

investigating how the amount of energy put into the balloon affected the speed and distance it

could travel.

Left: Sophie, Imagen and Tyler C with their rocket.
