If you are a parent or a professional working with a deaf or hard of hearing (d/hh) child with additional disabilities, then you know how challenging it is to find helpful resources and guidance. The result of the 2009-2010 Annual Survey of D/HH Children and Youth conducted by the Gallaudet Research Institute shows that 39% of d/hh children in the nation have one or more disability. The needs of d/hh children with additional disabilities vary considerably and there is no specific educational technique that is appropriate for all deaf children with special needs. Gallaudet University and the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center continue to work towards providing better training opportunities and useful information for parents and professionals. Graduate Certificate in Educating Deaf Students with Disabilities.

This 21-credit graduate certificate program may be completed in one year and emphasizes culturally relevant critical pedagogy as a foundation for preparing highly qualified special education teachers. The program focuses on working with the whole child, the family, and other professionals while merging content standards and CEC standards, in addition to general, bilingual, special, and deaf education pedagogy through coursework to prepare teacher candidates to work with a diverse group of children within a range of educational settings.

Prevention and Management of Problem Behaviors course (Recently modified!)

This 1 credit professional course will address problem behaviors in students with multiple disabilities from a communication perspective. Those taking the course will learn to analyze such behaviors from their communicative or functional intent. They also will learn to design programs to provide their students with socially acceptable ways to meet these communicative functions or needs and to reduce the magnitude of the problem behaviors. The Clerc Center’s Odyssey magazine features articles about issues important to educators and other

professionals who work with deaf and hard of hearing children and their families. Each issue centers on a specific theme. The 2008 issue focused on deaf children with autism and the 2010 issue centered on students with diverse needs. The 2012 Research to Practice issue is worth checking out as well. Subscriptions to Odyssey are free. All back issues are archived on the Clerc Center website at:

The Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center will soon launch the Deaf Students with Disabilities Network, which has been developed for parents, teachers, and professionals living and working with deaf and hard of hearing students with disabilities. This website will be designed to address the gap of knowledge specific to deaf and hard of hearing students with disabilities. This site will provide information and, more importantly, discussion forums that allow people from across the U.S. to interact and learn from one another. You will receive an email once this website is launched!
