Mama, Can I Get Baptized? “Take heed that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that in heaven their angels always see the face of My Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 18:10) This declaration about children, spoken by our Lord Himself, tells me two things:
1. Children are covered by God’s love before they are baptized. There is no reason to baptize children
until the Spirit moves them to request baptism.
2. When a child wants to be baptized, we should honor that desire and seriously consider the Spirit
moving in the child’s life.
Baptism is not to be taken lightly, but it is a joyous occasion. We practice “believer’s baptism”, meaning that the person has made a conscious, informed decision to be baptized. We also practice baptism by immersion, meaning that the person is totally immersed in water to symbolize complete acceptance of Christ and sharing in His burial and resurrection.
There is no right age for a person to be baptized. It is a matter of faith, not of age. I have baptized persons as young as 10 and as old as 80. Either way, I try to make sure the person understands baptism – to the extent any of us can understand such a mystery – and is voluntarily making the commitment.
WE ARE OFFERING BAPTISMS ON EASTER THIS YEAR! Easter is a wonderful time to be baptized. We have chil-dren in our church who are asking to be baptized. We want to be sure that their parents approve and that the children are deciding for themselves.
For both children and adults thinking about baptism, we will have four Pastor’s Classes immediately after church on March 17, 24 and 31, and on April 7. We will discuss baptism from the perspective of the Father, Son, Holy Spirit, and Church. People who take the class and still wish to be baptized will be immersed during our Easter service on April 21.
Baptism should not be taken lightly, but it is also not to be feared. It is an affirmation of our commitment to follow Jesus – and that is a wonderful decision! If you want to be baptized, please contact the pastor or church office and plan to take the classes.
Each of us should decide for ourselves whether and when to be baptized. We will baptize persons under age 18 only with the consent of a parent or legal guardian. If a person was “sprinkled” in another tradition, we accept that baptism; another baptism is not required. However, if such people wish to be baptized by immer-sion, we will happily comply.
Please call Pastor Joel on (561)252-0493 with any questions or concerns.
Yours in Christ,
Pastor Joel
