GWA Gymsports Meeting Notes – 15th October 2015

No further information provided from the judging coordinators regarding this issue.

2.2.3. Update from Judge Fining Working Party DH – Contacted all the members on the committee. Sharron Isard will be required to collate all the information from the meeting. First meeting scheduled week beginning 19th November. The Event Policy is scheduled to be submitted to the board for ratification at their November meeting so there needs to be a breakdown of these recommendations which will be submitted with the policy.

2.2.4. Update on Technical Committee Planning Day – 6th December 2015 Confirmation of attendance for the workshop along with any specific topics for the workshop with Jan Collins from JGC Group should be e-mailed through to Karyn Murray by next week.

2.2.5. Update of GWA Awards Nominations Process. No comments were made in regards to the overview prior to the meeting, hence a brief discussion of the overview was discussed.

Award of Merit International Representation – HR felt that it is a GWA responsibility in nominating for this award. Recommendation was for GWA to provide a list of recommended athletes who have competed internationally and it will be checked by the Technical Directors of each Gymsport before the nominations are submitted to the GWA Board for ratification.

KM to put in a request to GA to provide updated information regarding High Performance athletes who are competing at international events.

Decided that Association will nominate the Award of Merit to the GWA Board for 2016. The GWA Awards Nomination process to be amended accordingly.

Discrepancies were identified in this document in relation to the MAG- International Levels Athlete of the Year. The MAG Technical Regulations refers to this award as the MAG International Athlete of the Year. This amendment was noted–

WAG – HR to ask Jill Wright for information to calculate the awards.

RG – CW will confirm with the RG TC that all awards are correct.

AER – The National Stream no longer exists. International now has a junior and a senior award.

T D’s to provide confirmation of attendees and KM to confirm workshop times and topics KM to action required changes to the documentation

TRP – FW to confirm with Elliot and Leo.

ACR – LC to check the coach awards in the ACR Technical Regulations

2.2.6. Information from Technical Committees regarding topics for GWA survey.

To get an indication of which areas clubs are struggling with and where GWA could improve.

Topics: Prices to enter events, awards – i.e. AER downgrading the awards for events, where the levels who used to get medals, ribbons are proposed and for trophies they medals are proposed.

Member survey – HR raised issues that if survey is to tick a box or to get value out of it. To get feedback from all Gymsports to get a collated survey rather than circulating too many surveys to ensure that surveys are time worthy. FW suggested in running the same survey to make it measurable and grow the sport.

3.0 ED & Board Update

3.1 Board Update – Report tabled by Karon Williams with key points noted (see attached).

KW further outlined that RG is part of the GA Membership Review Committee whereby GA aims to make membership clear, concise and transparent for a parents to know exactly where the money they pay for their child’s membership goes to. Currently there is a GA component, State components of the membership fees and this differ from state to state.

KW outlined that Meeting king will be a new way to communicate from the board to staff to Technical committee and Technical members. It will eventually be introduced into the Technical Committees once it has a solid user foundation. It is on target, however, it will not be enforced now.

3.2 Sporting School Update PD outlined that Sporting Schools have been in operation for a term. GWA perspective successful but quite labour intensive from everyone involved.

Following Term 3 a review was done – the funding model of the charges for the top end of numbers were not viable as it was too cheap.

There have been issues in regards to the booking form which required to go through too many people and making the processes to long. It has now been amended to eliminate the

backwards and forwards.

An increase of 11 clubs enrolled; 2 new clubs working through the process; 3 clubs are working through with the program.

380 schools with 3 schools ran more than 1 program, 1 being a regional school and 4 schools teach within the school conducting the sporting schools program and 7 schools sourced coaches through the website.

We have 2 schools running programs in Term 4, one is within the metro area and we have 1 in the regional area.

GWA are on target to increase by 10%.

Link between schools and clubs.

DH indicated that from a club involved in Sporting Schools that data is coming through slowly so statistics may not be accurate.

There has been negative feedback from the portal.

The program has helped Spirit Gymsports and are wanting to expand AER in sporting schools.

Gymsport and Judging Coordinators Meeting – 15 October 2015

GWA Board Report

1. GA Membership Review

In 2013 KPMG was engaged by the ASC and GA to conduct a membership review of GA

Undertake an analysis of the current membership models

Recommend a credible financial model

Consolidate findings into a single recommendation

A new model framework was agreed in 2014 as part of GA’s new strategic plan for 2013-2016 which

prioritised a sustainable membership model for the future that progresses GA towards financial

independence.

Removing barriers to registration and recognising new social participants as part of the gymnastics

family is a key part of the membership model in order to support growth.

The current member fee model of GA and states is complex and a capitation model operates as an

annual tax on clubs posing a barrier to registration or recording of participants

The review sought to understand the potential impacts of a new membership model to members,

clubs, state bodies and GA, as well as model pricing structure options for consideration.

The preferred membership model is aligned with an agreed set of guiding principles, and addresses

the removal of registration barriers for 0 – 5 year olds and social users, simplifies technical and club

calculations and standardises nationally through:-

Creation of a new social member category at $0

All technical members charged the same registration fee

0 – 5 club license fee

Create a “market share” affiliation fee

Consultation – based on the feedback from different stakeholder groups a number of potential risks

and issues were identified that could impact on the successful transition to the new membership

model and pricing – however there are a number of initiatives that could help to mitigate some of

the implementation risks.

A key next step is to engage, collaborate and agree the preferred pricing model and proceed to

preparing for pilot commencement in January 2016. QG has agreed to pilot the agreed model.

RG sits on the GA Membership Review Committee.

RG is currently in Melbourne attending an ED meeting at GA to discuss the Membership Review. All

states have to agree to the proposed model and pricing before proceeding to the pilot stage.

2. New GWA Board Update

Governance

The GWA Board reviewed the procedures relating to the recording of the meeting minutes and

reporting back to the member clubs and Technical Committees. What was in place was time

consuming, costly and complex.

GWA is the only state that posted an amended version of the minutes on the website and sent a

copy to the Technical Committees. All other State Associations only release a Board Update to the

clubs. GA does not send the GA Board Minutes to the State Associations. The State Associations

receive a CEO Update from the GA Board meetings. This is a common Board of Management practise

for not for profit sporting organisations.

‘Meeting Place’ software was purchased (monthly fee) by GWA that provides the GWA Board with

the opportunity to minute discussion, note the decision and task and set a timeline to complete the

task. This can be linked to the person who is responsible for the task and email reminders are

automatically sent when the task deadline is pending. Using this software has halved the amount of

time it takes to record, proof and email the minutes back to the Board members.

The GWA Board Update is an easy to read summary that provides clubs and technical committees

with the latest information from the Board meeting. The update replaces the amended version of

the minutes that were posted on the GWA website. It does not include confidential information or

financial statements.

The Board Update will also be used by GWA staff to keep the Technical Committees informed of the

GWA Board activities and decisions.

Report Template GA Advisory Meeting2015 MAG Advisory 4/12/2015

MAG Advisory The focus throughout the weekend from GA was on participation and ensuring the decisions we made considered the potential impact on participation. Day 1 GA Staff Gymsport Specific High Performance Jo Richards and Bree Bryant provided a demonstration on the VAT system and outlined what activities are taking place in the HP area including the role of talent ID and talent transfer (Spin to win). Given the focus of the weekend was on participation, the MAG community requested we look at providing an AIS training camp experience for the open levels athletes that are in the ‘at risk’ bracket of dropping out (Level 8 and 9). Spin to win will look at developing a sports transfer package for clubs to hand out to athletes who are finishing up in gymnastics and the HP team will look at a suitable format for an AIS MAG Open Levels camp Education The focus for education was on simplifying the education process in an effort to reduce the cost and time commitment for new participants to engage in judging. Adi Glancy asked what communities can we engage in judging and what are our expectations and requirements for judges at each level of competition. GA will be doing much more work in this area over the next 12 months including rationalizing what education components can take place online. Events & Marketing Michelle Morris provided a review of the recently conducted National Clubs Championships and reported on the need for a comprehensive equipment list, which will be essential for the 2016 National Clubs. The Men’s Commission has already drafted this list into the 2016 Technical Regulations. It was also noted that scheduling of the MAG and WAG sessions would impact the equipment requirements. ALP Emily Rennes drove a conversation about the use of the ALP to promote participation that was met with resistance. The MAG community felt that the ALP was to provide a clear pathway for performance in gymnastics at both the national and international level and not to try to promote participation. Refer to Day 2 ALP for more detailed notes on content Participation Karen Norden started discussions on how we as could assist in stimulating the broader gymnastics community to engage in Men’s Gymnastics. The Club Starter Kit was suggested as a potential project that could help sell to existing or new clubs on the benefits of starting a MAG Program. It was noted that facilities and quality coaches remain the biggest hurdle to growth of men’s gymnastics however it was suggested that many WAG only clubs could easily start a men’s program. The group suggested the inclusion of a Masters division and a Special Olympics division to the National clubs Carnival.

Page 12: GWA Gymsports and Judging Coordinator Meeting Notes ... · The confirmation email or letter should have the information on it again. Email KM with any suggestions to improve the policies

Report Template GA Advisory Meeting2015 MAG Advisory 4/12/2015

2016 Technical Regulations The Men’s Commission had already drafted the Technical Regulations for 2016. There was a lot of discussion around qualification scores for Australian Championships but ultimately there were no changes made to these. The vast majority of the changes were more to do with clarifying the existing documentation not re-writing them. The equipment list for the National Clubs Carnival was also added. Day 2 MAG Presentation The commission presented their ‘Competition Health Check’ that is published each year within one month of the Australian Championships and is distributed to the State Associations and made available for download on the GA website. The presentation highlighted what data was collected, why this data is important and what it informs us about our sport. As this is only the second year the document has been produced there are no identifiable trends but more of a snapshot of the state of our sport. Open Levels Tour Sean Wilson provided an update on what locations and events may be suitable for future Open Levels Tours. There was no need or desire to change the existing format of the tour where the team travels to New Zealand every 2nd year and on alternate years travel further abroad. Potential 2016/18/20 Tour Locations

- Singapore Open

- Vitaly Scherbo Invitational

- Aloha Gymfest (may not offer MAG anymore)

- Yeeessoo Invitational (1st event January 2016)

Events Most of the discussion around events was focused on banding of the lower levels to promoted participation and to speed up the events. ALP Review The afternoon of day 2 was dedicated to initiating the review process of the MAG ALP. What is our ALP / Why do we need it? Competition Framework Pathway Mechanism to force a direction of development Education Resource What should the ALP address for our community? Min Standards Competition element of our sport Assessment tool Club/Coach information pack for engagement in competition What are the positive aspects of the current ALP Promotes standards Progressive structure Basic requirements of each apparatus are not overlooked

WA Update for GA WAG Commission & Advisory Meeting

The following are the key areas that the WA WAG TC felt were worth bringing to the attention of the GA Commission and WAG Advisory attendees. The intention is to be informative but brief and to the point.

Communications with Stakeholders & Expectation Management Initiatives A key area identified as requiring significant time and resourcing by the WAG TC in mid 2015 was the communication plan required to roll out the ALP and the associated changes to WA. In order to ensure that Clubs, Coaches, Judges and Parents understood the changes that would affect them in 2015, a number of key items were published and interactions engaged. Those of note (more recent):

Latest News Article: Foundation Festivals & WAG Updates

All (still) relevant WA TC prepared Pamphlets and Cheat sheets available on website - here.

Regional Clinics (Athlete & Coach clinics): Carnarvon, Karratha, Broome & South West

WAG TD presented and in attendance at GWA AGM & Club Forums, in addition to WAG Forum.

Utilising Surveys to gain important feedback; specifically for Foundations events & Talent Squad

ALP Adoption, NL 3-5 & Foundation Levels Events Run WA took the approach of having ‘transition’ year(s) to move the entire competitive program & events to the complete ALP philosophy. This has meant the splitting out of Foundation Levels into their own events (2 ‘seasons’; 2 competitions ~June, 2 ~Nov to allow L1 -> L2 transition in a year); move of ‘Club Levels’ events to use a modified NL technical content (intent is 2016 to be unmodified NL content); and scheduling Team events before Individual events (focus on Team initially while still mastering routines).

WA Clubs have picked up the Choreography quite well, and quickly applied the clarifications & changes. This has been quite pleasing to see.

Events run thus far have been very well received and supported. Minor issues with some Parents not being properly informed by their Coaches & Clubs. Specific details (rules) for WA WAG Events can be found here. Full calendar (as PDF) can be found here.

Judges Courses & Preparatory Materials

Remaining 2015 scheduled courses: Beginner: 11th October No Regional based courses or Advanced Silver courses have been scheduled. They are a priority for early 2016.

As per previous Codes - the WA Judges Committee and key experienced Judges created study materials for each course, utilising dropbox this cycle for their distribution (instead of DVDs/email etc). Workshops were also held for preparing the Advanced Course candidates. New workshop held 5th July to prepare Beginner judges looking to sit upcoming Intermediate course.

Immediate Concerns/Action Items for WA WAG TC The following represent the immediate concerns for the WA WAG TC (in no particular order):

calculation of WA athlete awards. Requires GA Australian Championships raw results.

indicative Dates for 2016 GA events – to allow further planning of Perth International event

Club Level Championships (~NL 3-9); 2 Foundation events; and 1 Elite preparation event.

documenting key WAG TC process in a Wiki and updating/detailing Strategic & Operational plans

preparation for NL 4-6 ‘Talent Squad’ – has 3 training sessions – intention is to run NL workshops prior

further statistical analysis on competitor numbers, long term competition seasons & age groups for 2017+ event planning. Additional consideration of change to Gymnastic coaching award rates.

clarity on Judging pathway and FIG opportunities; supporting & providing HP Judge opportunities.

Considerations for GA Commission In order to assist the GA Commission, the WA WAG TC would like to put forward the following suggestions:

concerns regarding the significant jump from Beg to Int judging; supporting materials / preparation workshops would assist, how does the Commission & other States feel about this?

distribution of ‘draft’ GA Technical Regulations to State TC’s for feedback. Set limited (i.e. 2 weeks) period for feedback. Would allow more eyes for proof reading and raising issues early;

when the revised ALP Manual is being prepared, suggest circulating to State TD’s/JC’s to assist with proof reading and raising issues and questions early.

WAG – GA Advisory Meeting - October 2015

Report by: Heidi Rose. Date: 14/10/2015

Meeting Specific Notes Saturday

Time Heading/Area Notes

9am – 9.30am Welcome – Mark Randell (CEO)

Thank you and Welcome.

9.30 – 10.45am ASC – Andrew Ramsay “Play.Sport.Australia” policy revealed & discussed, sister policy to “Australia’s Winning Edge”.

11am – 12.30pm GA Updates Presentation from Karen Norden. See GWA report.

1.20pm – 2pm WAG National Clubs proposal from TAS representative Mark Moncur: o Mark proposed new schedule and the creation of ‘divisions’ after initial qualification round. Intent is to

provide more opportunity for people to walk away with awards. Awards would clearly indicate though what division they were.

o Proposal very well received. More incentive for Clubs (especially WA clubs) to attend. Change to schedule also reduces the Judging load (i.e. not 2 full days of judging and needing to be consistent).

Nationals Qualification requirements discussion (was discussed over a number of sessions)

2pm - 2.40pm Judges Pathway – Nick Bugeja

Nick outlined the need to completely review the judging framework and education requirements (ASC requirement).

Brain storming session on ‘capabilities’ required of each judge to judge each of our levels

2.40pm – 3.20pm Foundation Levels & Participation- Karen Norden

Round table review, each State providing comments/feedback on how they had implemented FL events and the success they had seen (or not).

Comment: NSW have blindly adopted all principals, no transitions. This was intentional as they felt it was their opportunity ti make significant change, and they were concerned they would be forced into ‘compromise’ if they did a transition path.

Comment: each state in a very different ‘starting’ position (some already had banding, some had none etc); that significantly impacted their approach.

3.20pm – 4pm Pathways Update - Jo Richards & Bree Bryant

Jo provided update on the Camps that had been recently run (across disciplines) and their plans for early 2016;

Bree provided update on her work with States and programs on ‘transitioning’ athletes and providing TID opportunities.

4.40pm – 5.20pm National Events – Michelle Morris

Michelle requested feedback regarding Nationals and National Clubs, to assist with planning for 2016: o Significant comments from attendees of National Clubs. Issues with set-up and ability to move around

the venue. Plans already in place to resolve for 2016.

5.20 – 6pm Resources & ALP - Emily Rennes

General discussion on required changes for 2017 re-release.

Note: discrepancies between Skills, go by Section 2 over the choreography notes. Discrepancies between DVD and choreography notes, go with the notes/

WAG – GA Advisory Meeting - October 2015

Report by: Heidi Rose. Date: 14/10/2015

Sunday

Time Heading/Area Notes

9am – 10.30am Gymsport Presentations Comment: disappointed with the WAG approach & professionalism. Not sure right information shared either.

10.45am – 12.30pm & 1.30pm – 4pm

WAG Specific Discussions Nationals Scheduling: JW suggested double panelling NL 7 & 8 qualifications, so there is no need to share with MAG (capitalising on ‘dead’ WAG apparatus time). All liked the idea (would require that States don’t have same session allocated for NL 7 & 8 due to coaches).

Nationals Qualification: o Clarification that each state gets ‘6 free’ athletes to qualify before the qualification requirements need to be met. o ‘Extra’ athletes need to meet AA score of 43.00 or Apparatus Specialist scores (Vlt, BB, Fx 13.00; UB 12.50)

Team sizes: significant discussion on ‘fairness’ to smaller states (i.e. they were medalling before, not in 2015). Decided to keep same for 2016, to allow more time to see full impact of change.

Nationals Finals Qualification: o Top 32 athletes. But if State not represented in top 32, (max) top 2 athletes from that State included as additional.

Intention is to provide more opportunity and inclusion to ‘smaller’ states.

Open Division (2016+): discussion about intent, about qualification requirements. More discussion required, proposals made ‘in principal’.

General Notes Area Notes

Hotel & Meals Mantra Tullamarine. Hotel was very good, food very good. Minor scheduling issue with the WAG allocated afternoon tea on Saturday, as there were no snacks left by that time.

Organisation of WAG Sessions While the list of questions/areas requiring discussion appeared to be defined to the WAG Commission, it felt haphazard.

Except in the session with Karen Norden & Emily Rennes; no opportunity to really find out what other states where doing and how each state had approached rollout of ALP.

No other State shared a report.

General GA Sessions Very informative, they came with specific agenda’s.

WAG Session(s) Attendees:

GA NSW QLD TAS ACT VIC SA

Jill Wright (JW) Trisha Hade (TH) Trevor Dowdell (TD) Skye Sinclair (SS)

Marnie Hemming (MH) Lacie Jones (LJ) Mark Moncur (MM) Lesley Dickens (LD) Sue Synnot (SS) Simone

Comment made that it was confusing to people the distinction between responsibilities of HP staff & WAG TC, and that perhaps HP staff should also have been in attendance.

Gymsport & JC – WAG – October 2015 15/10/2015 Created by Heidi Rose & Tracy Holmes

GYMSPORTS/JUDGING CO-ORD REPORT WAG – October 2015

Strategic:-

Elite & State Team Operational plans outstanding: o [Unchanged] Draft Elite plan completed. Discussed at July 2014 TC meeting. WAG TD to edit with

recommendations from TC and share with GWA & GA. Elite will require more liaising/discussion with GA given recent GA position changes. More information regarding GWA plans also required in order to ensure appropriate

alignment.

WAG TC trialling use of Web-based software to assist with information sharing and task management. Trial is ongoing, but has been beneficial thus far.

Require a Communication Strategy. Look to schedule discussion for early 2016.

Risk Management

Clubs/Coaches/Judges making assumptions & jumping to conclusions regarding National Program and WA adoption. WAG TC & GWA Office focusing on getting information out to the community:

o Appreciate that GWA & WAG TC should be selective with communications, but concerned that there has not been enough engagement recently (last couple of months) which is affecting 2016+ planning.

Finance

Judging & Judges Committee

Budget o Budget previously submitted to office. 2016+ review required. o Judge Reimbursements: requires discussion on feasibility on changes. o Judge Travel Subsidy: current subsidy sufficient given GA subsidy and the current schedule. If

changes to schedule result in International team being different from National Levels team then a review/recommendation would be required.

WAG TC

Budget o Black & Gold Talent Squad: draft prepared. Intention is to continue to decrease reliance on Judges

funding, and use that for ‘value add’ activities for the squad.

Performance

Events o [Correction on July Report] Foundation Festivals: Generally very well received. Feedback survey

prepared and ready to be sent to Clubs, but TC expecting increased number in competitions later in the year now the Clubs understand the structure.

Event Statistics – o Comprehensive review underway, comparing not only events, but levels and age groups (due to

changes with National program, and alteration of which levels compete which events). o Further information from the GWA Office required in order to finish this.

State Teams o Review

Outlined/updated in July Gymsports Report

High Performance – Not Scheduled Item for Period o Australia vs China Friendly Invitational (7-8

th August): event very successful and provided WA

judges with a great international judging opportunity. o Allana Slater was selected as the Australian Judge for Japan Junior (20-25

th September, Yokahama)

o Emily Little & Martine George selected for World Championships (23rd

Oct – 1st Nov, Glasgow)

Planning

Calendar o Note: WAG TC submitted request to hold another Perth International in 2015. Still awaiting GA &

State ED’s calendar discussions. Suggestion is to run with Autumn State Championships. o Verbally advised that Australian Classic will be 7-11

th November.

o WAG TC prepared a ‘Calendar Planning Principals’ document, to assist with everyones upstanding of the ‘why’ behind date selection.

Tech Regs / Event Handbooks o Review in process. Event details discussion still outstanding.

2015 Advisory Meeting 4/12/2015 Created by Samantha Elkington

2015 ADVISORY MEETING Western Australia Aerobics Gymnastics Samantha Elkington – Technical Director *Unfortunately Liz Lions the technical director of the commission was not present at the advisory meeting therefore no decisions could be made without her, this was very frustrating.

DAY 1 Aerobics Breakout Session 1: Karen Norden – Focus on Participation growth and initiatives

Aerobics unfortunately had low participation numbers, however Aeroskools athletes were not included therefore we have asked them to be included for 2017, GA will said that they will get back to us about our request.

Karen pointed out that a lot of the data was incorrect and that some athletes are registered for the wrong gym sport or not at all – club initiative to get this data correct.

NSW has a foundations festival that will allow many recreational kids the opportunity to have a go at all gym sports to keep them in gymnastics. This should definitely be done in WA asap.

Aerobics should be introduced into Artistic gymnastics programs to help with co-ordination and movement. Athletes that then want to move are already aware of other gym sports available.

Aerodance is growing and could one day hold its own competitions separate for the other divisions, it could even include Step.

For Aerobics to grow some people felt that the price of entering events was too high for a 90 second routine on the floor, this is deterring parents from keeping there children in Aerobics.

Emily Rennes – Resource building, the Australian Levels Program

For the Aeroskools program to grow we must educate teachers. Not a huge focus in WA as we do not have schools participating in the program, this needs to be our focus.

Adi Glancy – Judges Pathway

Aerobics needs to utilise the other gym sport judges, as Aerobics does not have many competitions every year it would not be much added on.

Coach education – late entries for the FIG Level 2 course will be allowed

Should level 2 athletes receive a score or just a ranking? No decision was made as Liz was absent

Judges should have access to Aerobic videos so that they can practise judging – Gymnastics WA should help us with a dropbox, do they have access to any videos of routines from Nationals.

When presenting a course the course presenter should be receiving the presentation minimum 1-week prior to the course.

Jo Richards – The pathway update FTEM, Team Future & resources for camps

Inclusive Aerobics program – short video of aerobics lesson released every week until the athletes learn a routine. Film and submit the routine. Win the opportunity to perform at State Championships. Inclusion grant opportunities.

Spin to Win

The spin to win program is to encourage talented past gymnast to move to other Olympic sports that use gymnastics skills. This does not help Aerobics at all and we have requested that the athletes that do not get accepted into another Olympic pathway to be

Page 25: GWA Gymsports and Judging Coordinator Meeting Notes ... · The confirmation email or letter should have the information on it again. Email KM with any suggestions to improve the policies

2015 Advisory Meeting 4/12/2015 Created by Samantha Elkington

introduced to Aerobic gymnastics. GA said that this would not happen until the end of 2016.

Miscellaneous

The question was raised if Liz Lions was going to attend the 2016 FIG Forum so that Australia can have input in the next FIG Aerobic gymnastics Code. GA needs to get back to us on this.

No date or location has been set for 2016 World Championships – the location that many people are talking about is Korea in June.

ANAC International Championships is rumoured to be moving back to the first week of August, no confirmation yet.

National Squad – Cairo Leicester and Giveney How are being invited to National Squad Camp however we are unsure if they can trial for the National Squad, Suzuki World Cup or World Championships – waiting for response when Liz Lions returns.

The money that is created from the sale of the levels DVD, does this go back to Aerobics? Needs to be checked by Liz Lions.

DAY 2 AERO Breakout Session 2: 2016 plans

Introduce general participation competitions for Level 1 – WA should introduce this for all 2016 competitions to try and get more athletes involved in Aerobics.

Masters Division to be included in 2016 – Aerodance rules. The age has not been set yet.

Aerobics will now be in the 2016 National Club, we questioned what divisions were going to be used and if they were going to be different to allow for more participation.

We requested that our National Championships be included with the other gym sports in May/June – GA will get back to us on our request for 2016 and 2017.

We would like to implement an Australian Cup Series, which nominates 1 competition in every state for level 6, level 7 and international athletes to travel to and compete. The winner would then be presented at National Championships. The details for this have not been done – waiting for Liz Lions to be back. WA would like to request Judges Invitational for our selected competition.

We would like to know dates and locations of all International Aerobics competitions in 2016 – FIG have not realised these yet.

It was discussed that the trials for ANAC International would be held in NSW at a state competition on 1st May 2016 – this has not been 100% confirmed.

2016 Technical Regulations

I have asked that formal protests be allowed at National Championships, the same process that FIG uses for World Championships for difficulty.

Gymsport specific topics

National Championship Issues: -The warm up facility was way too cold for the athletes -The walk from the warm up area to the competition was far too long and it was outside which made everyone’s shoes dirty. This would also be an issue if it were raining. -The warm up area needs matts, preferably a full strip & boxes for stretching -Podium training was too late for little girls in National Development

2018 Aerobic World Championships was suggested to be in Bendigo. We do not believe that this will work as there is not enough accommodation, especially not nice enough for FIG delegates. GA would also have to purchase multiple FIG Aerobic floors.

Page 26: GWA Gymsports and Judging Coordinator Meeting Notes ... · The confirmation email or letter should have the information on it again. Email KM with any suggestions to improve the policies

2015 Advisory Meeting 4/12/2015 Created by Samantha Elkington

Each state will now be required to provide a judge at National Championships, we questioned if there was going to be a level requirement for the judge i.e. must be advanced.

In 2015 it was decided that Level 6+ athletes could only be put on the floor by advanced coaches, who was monitoring this? No answer was provided. Checking with Liz Lions

Why can coaches not view reports on international trips that there personal athletes have gone to? The personal coach needs to receive the same information as the athlete, especially when the athlete is under 18.

Nominations for international teams should be provided to the technical director so that they know who has nominated from there state.

ACROBATIC GYMNASTICS REPORT GA ADVISORY MEETING OCTOBER 2016

OVERVIEW

The meeting went over two days and was held at Mantra Hotel in Melbourne. Flights, accommodation, food etc were good but it would be nice to have the opportunity to have the meeting in Melbourne itself and not the airport for a change. The Welcome and ASC guest speaker topics were heavily weighted on the participation and increasing numbers in the sport. The overview did cover Sporting schools and its potential as well as its current limitations.

GYMSPORT SPECIFIC BREAK OUT SESSION

NATIONAL EVENTS

National Championships - issues with the timing of the schedule and waiting for presentations (sometimes hrs). This will be reviewed in 2016. Looking at increasing numbers but offering spare spots to other acrobats from states that have more than 5 per grp to enter and this will be done by a random draw. There will not be an end of event party as many states complain and do not support it. There will be a touch warm-up on the competition floor rather than podium training thereby reducing the number of days teams need to be at the event. Qualification scores will remain at 42 for L6 and 7, and 63.00 for L8 and above.

Clubs/ States will be required to provide a judge at National events at an appropriate level for the acrobats the club or state have entered. $250 per session.

National Clubs- will be in Bendigo for 2016. Similar set up but more matted areas for stretching in the warm up area. No podium training will be offered in 2016 and Acro will be in the second half of the week again. Tie break rules were discussed in detail and whether athletes who do not reach a score of 21.00 at the event would receive awards....the answer is no.

PARTICIPATION GROWTH AND INITIATIVES

Discussion on Level 8 and above as to how we can keep acrobats and should the difficulty be dropped for L8 and above. General feeling was no leave it as it is.

RESOURCE BUILDING, THE AUSTRALIAN LEVELS PROGRAM

A few minor changes to the ALP

Changes and clarifications will be released in the next bulletin

Tolerance was a long discussion. Its up to the State as to whether tolerance is kept for L6 and above.

JUDGES PATHWAY

Looking at starting a judges log and judges will need to do a certain number of hrs to be eligible to move up a level. Discussion on how this is facilitated in smaller states that may not be able to offer a large number of hrs.

FTEM PATHWAY UPDATE, TEAM FUTURE AND RESOURCES FOR CAMPS

Spin to win - GA have agreed that resources from the Spin to win program such as the skill matrix will be accessible to all gymsports including acro to assist in Elite development.

2015 Advisory Meeting 4/12/2015 Created by Louisa Choi

2015 Advisory Meeting Report This year’s Advisory Meeting was held at the Mantra Hotel at the Melbourne – Tullamarine Airport from the 10th – 11th October. The delegates that represented GWA covered all six Gymsports, these delegates included:

- MAG – Brenton Treacher - WAG – Heidi Rose - RG – Karen Gilgallon - ACR – Debbs Van Hagen - AER – Samantha Elkington - TRP – Fiona Wood

A representative for GfA was not present, however I spent the first day of the ‘Gymsport Breakout Session’ with the GfA commission and the other State representatives. Introduction / Welcome (Mark Rendell) Mark Rendell commenced the day by recognizing the hard work and technical support in driving the sport in each State. This year’s Advisory Meeting focused on the outcome of 2014’s market research in growing participation; drawing back to two of the four Gymnastic’s strategic pillars, Engage & Enthuse and Enable. Statistics were provided showing the successes in participation growth to date. Two of the Key Performance Indicators were:

- Podium Performance - 175,000 Gymsport participation

Comparison data was also presented indicating that we are on track to exceed 170,000 members for 2015.

- 2012 – 144,656 members - 2014 – 164,134 members - Growth of 13% - At the start of October 2015 we currently stand at 159,000 members.

Coaches and Judges statistics:

- 2015: Judges = 2308, Coaches = 5616 - 2014: Judges = 1856, Coaches = 5281

Concerns were raised in regards to not having enough coaches. Growth anticipated due to WAG ALP roll out.

- 535 – Affiliated Clubs - 164,134 – Registered Athletes. - 394,910 individuals engaged in activities delivered by affiliated clubs. - 1,732,100 individuals engaged in activities delivered by non-affiliated providers.

Statistics based on market research across Australia in relation to Gymnastics and analysis correlates to growth in the number of Trampoline parks having opened being the biggest contributor along with Fitness Aerobics.

Other statistics in participation growth include: - GFA: +23% in the past two years - KinderGym has had no growth - WAG: +3% - MAG: -4% - RG: +17% - ACRO: +20% - AER: -11% - TRP: +40%

2015 Advisory Meeting 4/12/2015 Created by Louisa Choi

Play Sports Australia – Andrew Ramsey Two focuses:

- Increasing participation - Success in awareness of the sport.

Gymnastics = opportunity. Research has shown that the natural instincts for children do gymnastics skills indicates opportunity to engage with these children and build awareness to this sporting avenue. Megatrends:

- A perfect Fit - From extreme to main stream - Everybody’s game - More than Sport - New wealth, new talent - Tracksuits to business suits

Concerns affecting participation rates can be due to a number of influences:

- 70% of adults in Australia are inactive which can filter down to the children. - The concerns of joining a club:

o The club being too cliquey o Not enough opportunity for beginner level learning o Inflexible schedules o Costs

Recommendations to overcome these concerns have been to consider providing more fun and enjoyable programs allowing the comfort of being with friends and promoting kids and parent programs. Participation and sport development – Karen Norden

- ASC categorization – Gymnastics currently sits in Category B; the sport shows significant participation.

- A real figure of participation is required to be conducted to be able to give more detailed analysis.

- A communication strategy is required to give more exposure to the sport to grow participation but to also provide an understanding of the different disciplines of the sport to the wider community; to engage and enthuse the wider community.

- Ultimate Sport Expo – Gymnastics is getting involved with the event for the first time on 21 and 23 Nov 2015. There will be displays, workshops, come and try sessions and interactive activities throughout the course of two days. The objective of the involvement is wanting to expose gymnastics to the community.

Sporting Schools

- Promoting the benefits of the sport at schools to build awareness and then be able to develop and improve resources at the schools and professionalize the workforce.

- Educating schools to book endorsed coaches. - Sporting Schools Statistics:

o Figures doubled from 2013 – 2014 o Gymnastics is the second most preferred sport in sporting schools. o Incentives to transition to new members. o Adding AER, RG and ACR to sporting schools. o Term 3 (2015):

469 programs requested.

Page 31: GWA Gymsports and Judging Coordinator Meeting Notes ... · The confirmation email or letter should have the information on it again. Email KM with any suggestions to improve the policies

2015 Advisory Meeting 4/12/2015 Created by Louisa Choi

224 actual programs delivered. GA endorsed coaching providers

o Term 4 (2015): 335 programs requested.

Sporting Development

- Establishment of the confederation of the Oceania Union. - There are currently two FIG countries (Australia and New Zealand). There must

be five countries to create a union. - Currently working on three more countries. - Countries that have been worked on to develop the sport and clubs in: Samoa,

Fiji, Cook and Marshall Islands. - Fiji: Developed 17 coaches, 2 judges and had 63 participants at their first

competition. GFA – Breakout Session Events (Michelle Morris)

- Inclusion of events in National Club Carnival 2016. - Gym for life challenge 2021.

Team Gym

- Discussion around formatting the workshop by the presenter bringing a team along for more visually effective teaching. There were also suggestions in approaching TRP clubs to be part of Team Gym and marketing to them and other clubs for States.

- Tying in Team Gym with National Clubs in Byron, 2016. - Consider placing Team Gym before TRP and ACR (as some athletes are drawn

from those gymsports). - Don’t have to do all apparatus at National Clubs e.g. consider having a TRP

club to just compete mini-tramp and tumbling. - Considerations in running Team Gym with another Gymsport. It would be a

challenge having to run it with RG due to music requirements for both competitions.

- Opportunity for Team Gym to be held at the changeover day at Bendigo Stadium to capitalize on opportunity to present workshops either side and target all Gymsports attending.

- Pros and Cons in relation to exposure for other Gymsports if held separately, ability to hold workshops etc. to generate interest and education.

- Realistic to expect 10 teams providing ongoing workshops, education and promotion occur.

- Discussion around which states are taking up Team Gym and what support can be expected for across Australia. VIC just starting but potentially too soon for clubs to attend however there is a club in Bendigo being targeted to champion the program. TAS and ACT are developing committees, some of the clubs that already attend national clubs from TAS may consider supporting 2016.
