Week 6 Thursday 5 th March, 2020 Leaders Induction We will have a Special Leaders Induction assembly during our normal assembly times. Captains and Prefects, Sports Captains and SRC representatives will have their special assembly on Tuesday 17 th March at 2pm and Year 1 and 2 Representatives will have theirs on Tuesday 24 th March at 2pm. Leaders parents will be officially invited to attend. All parents are always welcome to attend. Swimming Carnival I thoroughly enjoyed our Swimming Carnival last week. Our students are so lucky to enjoy a day where not only do the good swimmers get to be involved in their usual races but the students who are not great swimmers get a number of opportunities to be involved with board races and games in another pool. I saw very few problems with all students enjoying a beautiful day in a pool right next to the lake. It was fabulous to see so many parents attending and enjoying watching their children doing their best. Thank you to Mr Vine for his organisation and for his hard work. Thanks to our teachers for their support and great teamwork and special thanks to parent volunteers. Congratulations to the 28 students who competed at the Zone Carnival yesterday. Everyone competed at a very high level and some achieved PB’S. Well done everyone! Student Led Interviews/Stage newsletters Interviews are next week. We are continuing our initiative to have students take more responsibility for their learning. All students will be involved in setting their own goals. Obviously younger students will require more assistance with this than older students. Students will then be presenting these goals to their parents at a “Student Led Interview”. Please contact the office if you did not get a note. Working Bee We have purchased 3 of these lovely shelters for the oval so our students can have a place to sit at lunch and recess. We have already installed the concrete pads on which they should be installed. Unfortunately, they arrived like the second picture and we need some help with putting these together. If you are able to help with this sort of work we are having a working bee on Saturday 7th March at 1pm. A BBQ will be provided. We are having a further Working Bee for the Bush tucker garden on the weekend of the 27 th and 28 th for people who would prefer to assist with this sort of activity. We might see how the time goes for the first working Bee before deciding on a time. Yarn-up We will have a Yarn-up to discuss some of our Aboriginal programs on Wednesday 18 th March at 4.30pm. Although this is targeted at Aboriginal families all parents are welcome to attend. A BBQ will be provided. Communicating with the School I am again repeating our communication protocols with a few additions. The first point of contact for issues regarding your child should be their class teacher. Issues are usually managed easily this way. If you need to speak to the teacher, Assistant Principal or the Principal it is best to make an appointment so we are able to give you the GWANDALAN PUBLIC SCHOOL NEWSLETTER Term 1 Week 6 2020 GWANDALAN PUBLIC SCHOOL Phone: 02 4976 1318 Email: [email protected] Kanangra Drive Fax: 02 4972 5189 Web: [email protected] GWANDALAN Principal: Sandra Notley NSW 2259

time required. Please go to the office to do this not directly to teachers’ classrooms. Please do not go to classrooms after the bell and talk to teachers during class time. They are there to teach and care for their 20+ students. Staff attend stage meetings and staff meetings on Monday afternoons and Tuesday mornings with the executive staff meeting on Wednesday mornings and Tuesday afternoons. Consequently, staff will be unable to meet with parents during those times. Parents are also welcome to contact their child’s teacher via the phone with an email or via See-saw. Please give teachers sufficient time to respond. I do not expect them to do this after hours. If you want them to follow up something this may take some time. We thank you for your support in this matter. Behaviour Management Procedure These procedures were attached to our last newsletter for your information. Please take the time to read these with your child so they are aware of the consequences of poor behaviour. Sign and return the slip at the end to the class teacher to confirm you have read our procedures. Courtyard Could we ask that parents allow teachers to

walk students safely to their classrooms in

the morning from the courtyard area. We

would appreciate if parents could move to the

back of the courtyard and not follow students

to class when the 9am bell goes.

Mobile Dentist NSW Health is working with public primary schools to offer free dental check-ups and preventive care to students as part of a school-based mobile dental program. Your child’s school has been selected to participate in this program. The program involves a mobile dental team making scheduled visits to your child’s primary school. During the first appointment a dental check-up and preventive care package will be provided, subject to parental consent. The program is scheduled to visit our school from 16/03/2020 to 19/03/2020. 1. Read all the information provided

2. Carefully complete the consent

forms

school as soon as possible

NSW Health Primary School Mobile Dental Program Child Dental Benefits Schedule information sheet Dental care for children in NSW • All children (under 18 years old) can access free public dental services in NSW • Some children may also be eligible for the Commonwealth’s Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) • Regardless of whether your child is eligible for the CDBS, they will receive the same high standard of care that all NSW public dental patients receive at no cost to you

What is the Child Dental Benefits Schedule? The CDBS gives eligible children access to up to $1,000 in benefits for dental services over two calendar years. Children are eligible for the CDBS if they are: • Aged 2 to 17 years for any one day of the calendar year and • Eligible for Medicare and • Part of a family that receives Family Tax Benefit Part A or the child receives an Australian Government payment from the list available through the Department of Human Services. You don’t need to register your child for the CDBS. Families will be advised by the Department of Human Services if their child is eligible.

What services are covered by the CDBS?

A range of services can be provided under the CDBS including: • Examinations • X-rays • Cleaning • Fluoride varnish • Fissure sealants • Fillings • Extractions CDBS benefits are not available for orthodontic or cosmetic dental work or any services provided during a stay in hospital (including day surgery).

How can my child access the CDBS? Your child can access dental care under the CDBS through the NSW Public Dental Service, including the NSW Health school-based dental service, or through a private dental practitioner. When your child attends a public dental service, you will be asked to sign a form (enclosed in this consent package) giving us permission to bulkbill for services under the CDBS. Even if the $1,000 benefit cap is reached, or your child needs treatment not covered by the CDBS, NSW Public Dental Services will not charge for these services.

To find out more information: Visit www.health.nsw.gov.au/cdbs or visit the Australian Government’s Department of Human Services website at www.humanservices.gov.au/ individuals/services/medicare/child-dentalbenefits- schedule. You can check your child’s eligibility and CDBS balance through your Medicare online account at my.gov.au or by calling 132 011. Brush your teeth morning and night Eat more

5/6P Term 1 Week 6

The students in 5/6P have had a very smooth transition into their new class. It has

been great to see new friendships forming as we settle into the new year. Students

have been learning new technological skills on their Chromebooks as they become

better prepared for life in an ever changing world.

During our literacy lessons we have been looking at Imaginative writing. We have

been looking at our writing structure with a focus on parargraphing. Check out

some of our art based on Margaret Wilds book “The Treasure Box”. The students

were tasked with recreating their favourite page.

Our science lessons this term have been looking at the Earth and the Solar System.

We created some artwork based on the Sun and the Moon.

This Term 2L have been writing some fantastic pieces of persuasive writing. Here are

some brief examples of excellence:

Teddy Bears or Dolls?

In my opinion I think teddies bears are the best because you can sleep with them and they are really cuddly and soft. I also think they are better because you can dress them up and make them shine like a bright light. By Elyssa Whitney.

In my opinion, footballs are the best because you can kick them far distances. You can play almost anything. You can play footy and you can get really, really fit. You kick it hard like death. You can throw it very, very far. Also you can kick it as hard as you want to. That’s why they’re so fun. By Tyler Wells.

Beach Balls or Pails and Shovels?

In my opinion beach balls are the best because you can get fit and do beach volley-ball and air ball soccer. You can’t do that with pails and shovels. Can you float a beach ball? Yes!!! But can you with pails and shovels? No!! And that is why I think it is the best. By Caleb Gwinnell-Sheather.

I my opinion pails and shovels are the best because you can dig holes with them. Balls can’t do that. Also, you can make sand castles with them and balls can’t do that. By Brielle Bull.

In my opinion, beach balls are the best because you can play catch with them and you can play soccer with them. Also, you can play with them in the water. Plus, it keeps you fit. By Joel Hamilton.

In my opinion, jump ropes are the best because they make you fit and healthy. They are fun but painful. All girls like them. By Brigit Fokas.
