Homeowners in metroAtlanta can enhance the valueof their property using someof the world’s most eco-friend-ly materials and products;many are on display at theGeorgia Home & Gardenshow, including: • Rapidly renewable lumber– SunGrassWood bamboo• Something new fromsomething old – EcoVantagethermally modified wood• Ultra-low-maintenancerecycled composite decking –GAF’s DuraLife Siesta Collec-tion
One of the newestoptions for Atlanta AreaHomeowners is the bam-boo outdoor deck – wood
without trees!Bamboo is one of world’s
strongest plants and mostrapidly-renewal resources. In1995, technology was devel-oped to laminate long rectan-gular strips of bamboo into avariety of wide profiles andlong lengths for interior andexterior applications. So,now, in the Southeast, wehave available almost any sizeof lumber product in strong, beautiful, rapidly-renewablebamboo.TMW – no chemicals, nopreservatives, no warp-
ing, no rotting – No kidding!
The resourceful people ofFinland developed a methodof extending the useful life ofwood without chemicals orpreservatives. The product oftheir ingenuity is thermallymodified wood (TMW). Inthermal modification, wood issuper-heated to temperaturesapproaching 500° F. In thisheat, wood changes in twosignificant ways. First, thesponge-like properties perma-nently stop working, so TMWdoes not warp. Second, thecarbohydrates in the wood areconverted to a non-nutritionalstate leaving no food sourcefor mold or mildew, so TMWdoes not rot.
Composite Decking Ultra-low maintenance
and peace-of-mind!In Biddeford, Maine, in
1999, two chemical engineersdeveloped premium compos-
ite decking by blending recy-cled polypropylene plastic andhardwood fiber. This deckingmaterial is so strong that lob-ster fishermen in Maine use itto reinforce their traps. Lastyear, GAF – the same compa-ny that makes more roofs thatanyone else in North America
– bought the small manufac-turer in Maine. To show itsconfidence its durability,GAF’s Systems Plus warrantyprovides 30 years of transfer-able, non-prorated protectioncovering both material andlabor!

With Spring just aroundthe corner, it is important tostart the planning processfor your upcoming outdoorprojects. In recent years, outdoor living spaces havebecome increasingly popu-lar, both as congregatingareas for families and as amethod for adding value tohomes. The possible compo-nents one can add to theirbackyard are numerous: Firepits and fireplaces provideexcellent features to congre-gate around on coolevenings, outdoor kitchensexpand entertainment andhosting possibilities, andinstalling a pool or patio cantransform an ordinary back-yard into a unique outdoorliving retreat. Simple land-scaping can even transformyour space or add curbappeal. However, with all ofthe options and possibilitiesstarting an outdoor projectcan be a daunting task.
The first step in plan-ning and executing a suc-cessful outdoor project isclearly identifying the needs, priorities and budget for thespace. Next, the amount ofavailable space for your pro-ject and what features youwould like to install shouldbe determined. Take the
time to do some researchthrough web pages, maga-zines, and books to findimages and conceptualideas of landscape featuresthat you prefer. Be sure tolook at property lines, build-ing setbacks, and other localbuilding ordinances toensure that what you areimagining is possible.
Once you have a roughidea of what you would likeyour outdoor space tobecome, a design profes-sional can aid you in com-bining your ideas into acohesive plan. Landscapedesign plans can range inprice from a few hundred toa few thousand dollarsdepending on the size andscope of the project thatyou are designing. Youshould evaluate a few differ-ent designers to get a feelfor their strengths anddesign style before decidingon one. You also canchoose to work with adesign firm or adesign/build company thatcan help you with installa-tion once the design phaseis complete. Putting togeth-er a good master plandesign can help you to savetime any money later andwill ensure that your fin-
ished product is exactlywhat you had in mind.
Once your design iscomplete, you can select acontractor to work with dur-ing the installation phase. When deciding on a con-tractor, it is critical to find aprofessional that has experi-ence with similar featuresand project scales to yours.Collect bids from a few dif-ferent companies and takethe time to check referencesand to visit job sites of simi-lar completed projects. Agood contractor should alsobe able to provide you witha timeline for the projectthat makes sure that youproject will be completed ontime and on budget.
By taking a systematicapproach to planning youroutdoor project you can geta finished product that youand your family can enjoyfor years to come. Theopportunities of what youcan do with your outdoorspace are endless; just takethe time to imagine, create, and enjoy!

In a good or bad economy, one can't go wrong choosingenvironmentally responsibleoptions when building a home.Sustainable, good qualityupgrades make the house lesscostly to operate and thesecomponents will ensure andaccelerate its value over time. A'green' home contains energy-efficient heating, cooling, light-ing, water systems, and thebuilding process should beginwith concrete, not wood. Here's a handy checklist to usewhen talking to your builder:
Location: Build near publictransportation, with options towalk or cycle.
The Envelope: Ask for con-crete walls. Systems can be builtwith stay-in-place, pre-assem-bled blocks, steel reinforced, and then filled with concrete. This cuts construction time sig-nificantly, creates less wastematerial, and virtually elimi-nates mould, mildew and othertoxic emissions produced bybuildings structured with tradi-tional methods. Homeownerssave money with durability andenergy efficiency -- and theresulting structure (www.nudu-ra.com) is reported to be up tonine times stronger, with farmore fire protection, far moresound insulation, and with a
potential to reduce energy costsof up to 70 percent. Othergreen materials should includelow- and zero-VOC (volatileorganic compound) paints andsealants, high-performancewindows, and roofing materialthat does not absorb heat.
Green Energy Supply: Gen-erate your own. Solar panelsfor daylighting, natural heatingand cooling can be incorporat-ed cost-effectively into mostbuildings.
Conserve: Avoid over-designand aim for standard ceilingheights and building dimensions. The best green homes use sal-
vaged materials, or those with arecycled content.
Garden Green: Outside, plan for low use of water andpesticides. Design with drought-resistant native plants, perenni-al groundcovers, and shadycanopy trees. Flowering plantswill encourage the eco-impor-tant activity of birds and bees.
Water Conservation: Waterfrom sinks, showers, or clotheswashers (graywater) can berecycled for irrigation in someareas. If current codes preventgraywater recycling, considerdesigning the plumbing for easyfuture adaptation.

Updating akitchen, adding an extraroom, or finishing an attic orbasement can give you thehome you want for less, whileletting you stay in a conve-nient neighborhood with thesame friends and schools.
Remodeling projects area great opportunity tomake energy-efficiencyimprovements. Keepingenergy-efficiency in mindwhen planning your projectcan save money for years
to come while also reducingyour impact on the environ-ment.
Start with a Home Performance auditMake sure lowering your
energy bills and improvingyour comfort are part of yourremodeling goals. A RightChoice™ Home Performancewith ENERGY STAR® audit isa great way to get started. Anindependent expert will cre-ate a custom plan that putsyou in the driver’s seat.
The audit checks whetheryour home’s insulation andair sealing meets current effi-ciency standards and usesspecialized equipment tomeasure air infiltration andtest your heating and air con-
ditioning system’s perfor-mance. You’ll receive a prior-itized list of recommendationsto improve your home’s ener-gy efficiency, such as:• Installing additional insula-tion• Air sealing• Sealing, modifying orreplacing the duct system• Replacing heating andcooling equipment
If energy upgrades orrepairs are needed, you’ll beconnected with professionalsin heating, ventilation and airconditioning (HVAC); weath-erization; and insulation whoare part of Jackson EMC’sRight Choice network. Thesecontractors go through spe-cialized training and agree to
provide high standards ofworkmanship. While there isa charge for the audit, Jack-son EMC members canreceive rebates to offset aportion of these costs.
In addition to suggestingways to improve your home’scurrent efficiency, the resultsof the audit can help youdetermine what kind ofchanges you’ll need to makein your HVAC system andductwork in order to makeyour remodeled space effi-cient and comfortable.
Low-interest loans, Jack-son EMC rebates and taxincentives are a great way tolower remodeling costs, inaddition to providing monthlyenergy bill savings.
Abundant opportunities
for savingJust as there are many
remodeling projects and designsto choose from, there are awide range of energy efficien-cies you can build into yourhome improvement project toensure your home is comfort-able and uses only the electricityyou need. Here are just a few:• Efficient appliances andproducts – look for theENERGY STAR label.• Insulation – replace orupgrade it.• Air sealing – make sure
your conditioned air stays inyour home.• Windows and doors – willproduce improved comfortand enhance the beauty ofyour home.• Heating and cooling – makesure your HVAC system is prop-erly sized and the ductwork isdesigned for your project.Lighting – install air-tight, IC-rated recessed lighting to elim-inate air leakage.

Solar energy productsand their potential arereceiving more attentionthan ever, as peoplebecome increasingly inter-ested in alternative formsof energy. And if youhaven’t considered convert-ing your home to solarpower, you should. Manypeople have the impressionthat solar is a great idea, but one that they still can’tafford. What they likelydon’t know is this: Solarpanel efficiencies haveimproved enormously, whereby it now takes littlemore than half the numberof solar panels to producethe same amount of energyas it did a few years ago.Less panels equals lesscost. Also, the number ofmanufacturers making solarpanels has more than dou-bled in the same time, which has further loweredtheir cost. Add to that fed-eral and state tax credits
which now pay a combined65% of installed cost herein Georgia, and there hasnever been a better time forpeople to “go solar”.
It’s now within mostpeople’s reach to obtaintheir own solar energyindependence. You don’teven need to be inspired bythe “green movement”,and the fact that using solarenergy is great for the envi-ronment as a clean, renew-able energy source. Youwill see significant cost sav-ings immediately. Byinstalling a home solar sys-tem you have protectedyourself from the inevitablerising energy costs for atleast the next 20 years (theaverage life of solar pan-els). You are further assuredof double-digit returns ontheir investment, in thesethree main ways: (1) Fromthe avoided costs of risingenergy prices, (2) by profit-ing from the sale of theirpower production back tothe utility at a premiumwhich they must pay, and
(3) the immediate increasein their home’s value, which is calculated byappraisers at approximate-ly 20 times their annualenergy savings.
The best solar installa-tions take into account ahome’s overall energy effi-ciency. As the saying goes,“The best dollar of energyis the one that’s neverspent”. Reputable solarenergy consultants will con-duct a full assessment ofthe property and recom-mend areas where savingscan be had, sometimes byas much as 40%. Rarelydoes the cost of addingsuch things as increasedinsulation, solar attic fans, renewed caulking and radi-ant heat barriers outweighthe savings from loweringthe solar system size need-ed to power a home. Sodon’t put it off any longer:You can afford a solar ener-gy system, and gettingstarted is just a phone callaway. Stop investing in theutility company, and investin yourself!
