Group Riding Tips

1. Arrive at a group ride ready to ride. This means with a full tank of gas, appropriate clothing for the weather, well-rested and fed, and a bike in safe operating condition. Riding is no fun if you are too hot or too cold, or if you have too many unexpected stops.

2. Make sure everyone is aware of the proposed route and extended stops (such as lunch, fuel, and sightseeing stops). Might be a good idea to have a map of the route with these stops indicated. 3. The ride is self-paced, ride at a speed you feel comfortable with. No one should feel pressure to keep up with anyone else. It is not the point of the ride to have someone get hurt. 4. Ride in a staggered formation, with a minimum of two seconds between you and the rider directly in front of you. This allows you to use the entire lane to ride in and gives you an extra margin of safety. 5. Ride your ride. Make sure you keep looking down the road and through the corners, not at the bike

ahead of you. Set your own pace and choose your own lines through the corners. 6. A group of motorcycles is not considered a “single vehicle”. Be courteous and allow cars to enter/exit a highway or change lanes. Make sure you let the riders behind you know what is going on (this also applies to other hazards, as well). 7. At least one of the riders ahead of you will wait where you might make a wrong turn. Similarly, you are expected to wait at intersections and other decision points until the person behind you shows up.

8. Plan brief stops throughout the ride to let everyone regroup, make sure everyone is present, check gas supplies, and to allow for rests.

9. If you decide to split off from the ride, make a reasonable attempt to alert the entire group to your departure.

10. Enjoy the Ride!

Ride Safe,

Mickey

History of Labor Day

Labor Day: What it Means

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and

economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers

have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

Labor Day Legislation

Through the years the nation gave increasing emphasis to Labor Day. The first governmental recognition came

through municipal ordinances passed during 1885 and 1886. From these, a movement developed to secure state

legislation. The first state bill was introduced into the New York legislature, but the first to become law was passed

by Oregon on February 21, 1887. During the year four more states — Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and

New York — created the Labor Day holiday by legislative enactment. By the end of the decade Connecticut, Ne-

braska, and Pennsylvania had followed suit. By 1894, 23 other states had adopted the holiday in honor of workers,

and on June 28 of that year, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal

holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories.

Founder of Labor Day

More than 100 years after the first Labor Day observance, there is still some doubt as to who first proposed the

holiday for workers.

Some records show that Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a

cofounder of the American Federation of Labor, was first in suggesting a day to honor those "who from rude nature

have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold."

But Peter McGuire's place in Labor Day history has not gone unchallenged. Many believe that Matthew Maguire, a

machinist, not Peter McGuire, founded the holiday. Recent research seems to support the contention that Matthew

Maguire, later the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, N.J., proposed

the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York. What is clear is that the

Central Labor Union adopted a Labor Day proposal and appointed a committee to plan a demonstration and picnic.

The First Labor Day

The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with

the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later,

on September 5, 1883.

In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday, as originally proposed, and the Central Labor

Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a "workingmen's

holiday" on that date. The idea spread with the growth of labor organizations, and in 1885 Labor Day was cele-

brated in many industrial centers of the country.

Chapter Q Team

Its time to start visiting other chapters If you looked at the calendar in this news letter you can see lots of opportunities to go visit other

chapters. Jan and I love to go visit and we would like to have some of the chapter come with us. So

to that end I have included our tentative visitation ride schedule in the calendar. These are the dates

we are going to other chapters. If anyone would like to come with us please call or text or e-mail me

and let us know. That way we can set up a ride that will fit your schedule and get us to the chapters

on time. If you want to visit a chapter and it is not on our list let us know and we will try to make it

work. We travel by car until the weather is good enough to ride then we ride as much as we can.

We will also chase the plaques as much as we can so try to plan some rides to help out with that.

When we go for the Middle and West TN Plaque it is done by ticket draw and there is no minimum

number of people from our chapter required. When we go after the TN Traveling Plaque you must

have five members attending and this is given to the highest miles traveled to the Gathering. The

miles used are the total miles of all the members that attend the gathering, also if you ride your

Motorcycle you get double miles for that rider and co-rider. If you have any questions about the rules

please go to the district web site (www.gwrratn.org) and check them out.
