B y D yan Moore Residents o f the South Bergen area can look forward to a new and im- proved Division of Motor Vehicles Office opening in Wallington. I he new office would replace the agency located in Rutherford. The DOT initiated the move of the Rutherford Motor Vehicle office be- cause there is inadequate space in terms of parking and office area at the Rutherford location. Residents and businesses have complained of inadequate parking for the agency and often, those that use the agency, park in lots designated for businesses in the area An agency designed to serve those w ith cars, yet does not offer a place to park the vehicle The Department of Transportation (DOT) is in the process of finalizing a contract to lease property in Wallington on Main Street at the former site of A&P. The relocation would then need to be approved by the Legislature. If the move is ap- proved, relocation could take place by the end of the year. The nesv location w ill provide im- proved parking facilities and approxi- mately twice the square footage of the office in Rutherford “ We believe the new facility w ill be more convenient for customers,” said David Brown, spokesperson for the DOT. “The move should result in minimal disruptions to customers.” The Rutherford office w ill remain open and continue serving the pub- lic for as long as possible until the W allington office is ready. If the new location in Wallington is approved, it w ill be approximately three miles from the existing Ruther- ford office and w ill thereby serve the same geographical area. The princess won’t be living happily ever afterT hough we may he crilies ofthe British and we

may believe the outdated - perhaps ludicrous - monarchy system should cease, something else is (rue.

We fell in love with a princess named Diana.Cut down in the prime of her fairy tale life, this

beautiful, fragile, caring young woman died when it looked us though she was about to find the kind of happiness the rest of us regular folk take for granted.

She broke all stereotypes we had ofthe dowdy Windsor family.

A shy girl ol'2() when she married the pnnce, we watched her emerge as a confident, outgoing, “queen of people’s hearts".

Diana also broke the long-held royal belief that mothers of princes and princesses should be standoffish and never show affection for their children in public.

It was clear to the world that she loved her kids dearly and sadly, she was probably their only link to reality, to humanity.

Instead, Diana's sons are left with a lasting image of inhumanity, their mother being chased, hounded and stalked by the blood-thirsty photographers that followed their every move in each waking moment.Clearly, these givedy animals stop at nothing. There are reports that some actually pushed away pass- crsby who were trying to help the accident victims, in their quest to shoot photos o f the princess and her boyfriend dying. Pathetically, but predictably, those photos were later up for sale.

Someone on the radio said we wouldn’t know

her and love her if it wasn't for the press. That may be true, however, no one needs to see

fuzzy pictures of the princess embracing her boyfriend. I'hey are two consenting adults, and yet that photo, published recently, reportedly fetched $ 2 0 0 ,0 0 0 .

Responsible, legitimate journalism can provide us with the kind of insight necessary to appreciate the life of another.

We did not need the princess’s privacy invaded and her safety and happiness compromised in order for us to love and admire her.

I he photographers do what they do for money, plain and simple. It is immoral, reckless, insensitive, demeaning and horrible.

Other celebrities have long lamented the obscene tactics used by these photographers. Tom Cruise said he was chased by these insensitive animals through the very same tunnel.

What should be done? Do we have to enact laws to protect all citizens, especially the famous ones, from the viciousness of such photographers? Must we become moral and ethical police, forcing people to show some humanity?

Just as we shake our heads and say no, o f course not, a photographer is taking pictures o f garbage from the trash can of someone famous, while another is hiding in the closet of a terminally ill celebrity.

What a world we live in.Princess Diana deserved to live happily ever af

ter.But then that photo wouldn’t fetch such a hefty price, would it?
