Resident Spotlight Paul Hanson Paul, the oldest of eight, was born in the Dutchtown area of St. Louis. His parents moved the family to North County where he grew up. After earning a civil engineering degree from Washington University, he worked as a verticalstructural engineer at various local firms including Solutia and Ameren. He designed cement plants that were built in Indonesia, Brazil and Canada. He met his wife Linda at Belcan Engineering, where she was the office manager. They married in 1986 and Paul helped raise her two daughters. Pam is an emergency room trauma nurse living in California and Sarah and her husband Jeff are raising their twin daughters in Ballwin. Linda was called Lulu by the twin granddaughters and Paul worked to teach them to call him Big Kahuna, which they have shortened to K”. Paul and Linda enjoyed travel to the Caribbean, including the Dominican Republic and Puerto Vallarta in Mexico. Unfortunately, Linda died in 2015. Steve and Barb Metivier helped Paul and Linda find HHR and they all closed on their lots on the same day. Paul enjoys the Friday Night Pass the Trash group and as a music fan enjoys the dances. Paul is an avid model builder going back to his high school days. As part of the International Plastic Modelers Society, he has exhibited his WWII models of German and American tanks and won many first and second places in both regional and national shows. To learn more about the German tanks, Paul has many books in German that he can reference. Paul is also an aficionado of the Napoleonic Wars for the intricacies of the uniforms, from the British, to the Prussians as well as the French. Again, he has quite a reference library to support his hobby. By: Mary Ann Schuermann H ERITAGE OF H AWK R IDGE C OMMUNITY A SSOCIATION, INC. Blossom: A Gardening Column by Ann Chandonnet Leafing through the St. Louis Post-Dispatch gift guide, "The List," I noticed two items of gar-dening interest. # One is a compost tumbler with a 65-gallon capacity drum ($181.79 at Lowe's). It is rotated with a handle, and has compartments for two stages of composting. Most city dwellers reject the idea of composting because of odors associated with decay. However, if you put in the right ingredients (broccoli stems, onion peels, apple cores, etc., no bacon) and the right addi-tives (blood meal, soybean meal, alfalfa meal) your compost will not annoy the neighbors. On a farm, animal manure would be part of the mix, but that's unwise for HHR . Also add a half-inch of top soil monthly. Sprinkle these additives; don't dump. # Two is a playmate for Roomba, Robomow RS630. It mows randomly, leaving its charging station multiple times a day, shaving a little each time. It returns automatically to its station when the battery runs low. The Robomow uses GPS. If it is lifted by a thief, an alarm will sound. ($2,499 at Home De-pot).

Town Hall Meeting Monday, Dec 9

Snow Events Just a reminder, when they are forecasting snow or ice, please make sure to park cars in your driveway, not in the street. I am requesting Lombardo also move construction vehicles and trail-ers when the forecast calls for snow. The plows and salt trucks can maneuver easier and do a better job when the streets are clear.

Exterior Holiday Decorating The Garden Committee will again be hosting a decorating con-test. We will have a daytime decorations winner and a nighttime decorations winner. The contest will be judged on Tuesday, December 17. Please be sure your lights are on by 6pm that evening.

New Books in the Library Return to Mars by Ronald R. Van Stockum, Jr. Markman's Cave by Ronald R. Van Stockum, Jr. Poetry Comes Up Where It Can: An Anthology of The Amicus Journal, 1990-2000. Edited by Brian Swann. Foreword by Mary Oliver.

ADVISORY BOARD REPORT November 19, 2019 The October financials were discussed and approved to be put on the website. We met with Nick from Greenwood to evaluate the year. Mowing next year will continue to be on Monday. His biggest challenge here is people over watering their yards. We met with 2 representatives from Walters Golf Management to discuss the budget for the golf course for next year as well as lake management, especially the chemicals involved in controlling the algae. The shared fence with McBride Homes should be installed starting the 20th. The fall HVAC maintenance is finished for the clubhouse. The Advisor election is in progress and the results will be announced at the Town Hall meeting in December. A first draft of the new Rules & Regulations was presented. The committee is doing a great job. We are doing some troubleshooting on the electrical wiring for the 2 street lights between the Pro Shop & Clubhouse. We are hoping they can be repaired which will help with the parking lot lighting. The caulking around the pool is complete and the cover is on. The sand blasting, painting and tile work will be done in the spring. The acoustic panels for the ballroom are ready to be installed and will be scheduled around events in the ballroom. Snow captain procedures were discussed. Three of us will make a decision on when or if to plow or treat for ice and then let Kelly know so she can contact Lawn Authority who has our contract. We finalized the 2020 budget which will be presented at the Town Hall Meeting. The next meeting will be December 17th at 10:00am.

HHR Holiday Traditions HHR has several long standing and some new traditions to recognize the upcoming holidays. We hope you will participate. Feel free to make suggestions for new traditions too! Holiday Decorating—12/03 9:30 am— Please come help us decorate the clubhouse. Each new HHR family is invited to hang an ornament on our tree (anytime during the holiday season). We recommend a non-breakable ornament with your family name and the year you moved to HHR written on the ornament. This year, we are in special need of some strong folks to help us with our huge tree. Holiday Luminaries On Christmas Eve at 4:30 pm, residents put out Luminaries to light up the neighborhood. The luminaries are made from milk jugs. More details will follow in the December Putterings, but you can start saving your gallon milk jugs now. We recommend special candles that can be purchased at the clubhouse for $1 each, beginning December 2. Special thanks to Dick Faxon for being Captain of the Luminary Project this year!!

Page 7: H OF H R COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION Putterings · The shared fence with McBride Homes should be installed starting the 20th. The fall HVAC maintenance is finished for the clubhouse. The

Scouts of Troop 952 returned on Saturday November 19th to pick-up the blue bags they left the previous Saturday. The Scouts were not disappoint-ed as the collection yield a total of 1979 items from our community. The Scouts then took the items to a food pantry located in Wentzville. This Scout group is sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints located on Lake Saint Louis Drive. The Scouting for Food Campaign organized by the St Louis Area Scouting Council again this year, collected nearly 2 Million items from the Greater St Louis and St Charles Area. Thanks to all our residents for making this another remarkable event that will assist many needy fami-lies in the area.
