THE NEW BIRTH—JOHN 3 FR. ANDREW WOJTAN HOMILY SUMMARY MARCH 11, 2018

Certain signs can only come from God. Nicodemus knew it and assures: we know You are a man of God, You are a holy man. We want to find out who exactly You are?

John clearly points that the Jewish People were not able to believe that God loves them so much that He would come in Person. This incapacity prompts Jesus to say, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.”

The Jewish Leadership allowed religion to degenerate into laws, rules, regulations & prohibitions, so much so that they trapped themselves. They could not perceive this extraordinary love of God. They could not accept that they had to go through another Rite of Initiation to enter the Kingdom of God. They thought they were already in the Kingdom of God. The only initiation they know is the Rite of physical circumcision, which made them the People of God. The idea to start all over again seemed ridiculous to them. They were convinced they had reached their destiny. If you think you are already a saint, would you work to become one? Nicodemus and the Jewish Leadership were in this position.

Jesus said, “I tell you most solemnly, You must be born from above.” There is a difference between religion and spirituality. Many people have their religion (Catholics, Protestants, Moslem, Jews). They each have certain revelations, rules, rituals and worship organization. Religion, if di-rected only for the external, misses the essence, which is this incredible love of God. The aim of the New Evangelization is to make us aware of this invitation, to enter into a personal relationship with God.

Nicodemus does not understand that the Holy Spirit has the right to operate outside of their rules, that the Holy Spirit has complete freedom. The Spirit blows where It wills. John wants us to know that the mysterious coming and going of the Holy Spirit parallels the mysterious coming and going of the Incarnate Word. Both Jesus and the Spirit come from ‘above.’ They can hardly be understood by people who are from ‘below.’

The Jewish Leadership should have understood the meaning of the bronze serpent. (Num 21:4-9) The people fell into rebellion and sinned against God in the wilderness. Moses was asked to raise the bronze serpent as a sign for the people who were in need of healing. Taw sign – symbol of the Mes-siah. It was the sign of salvation. The power of the serpent will be reduced to nothing by the Messiah. It is the pre-Christian crucifix. (Wis 16:6-17). “For he who turned toward it was saved, not by what he saw, but by you, the savior of all.”

Jesus told Nicodemus that He will have to be lifted up, as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert. The issue in the sign of the Son of Man is eternal life.

The Jewish Leadership had to remind themselves: by rejecting the light, the alternative is darkness; by rejecting the life, the alternative is death. Those who reject the Beloved Son put themselves out-side of the Salvation offered by the Lord, and so ‘judge’ themselves. The reason that some prefer darkness is their strong attachment to sin: they love their sin. So, the real sin is unbelief, the refusal to accept Jesus and the new life He offers.

God sent His Beloved Son! Anyone who believes in the Son receives the gift of Eternal Life, but any-one who refuses this gift will never experience this new life in the spirit, being offered by Jesus, the only Savior.
