Completion ChallengeCompletion design requires the capability to deploy long interventionstrings throughout well life without the need to kill the well.

SolutionAs well paths become more complex and larger sections of reservoirexposed, well completion engineers need to consider the need to performwell interventions during well life to maintain performance.Traditionally well intervention string lengths are limited to the lengthof lubricator that can be stacked on top of the production tree. eaddition of a Halliburton LV4 lubricator valve extends these possibilitiesby placing the swab valve within the tubing string below the productiontree. is delivers operational cost savings and improves safety byreducing the number of surface rig ups and intervention trips required.

e LV4 valve is normally installed in tandem with the tubing-retrievablesafety valve (TRSV) to provide a fully testable well barrier forintervention purposes. Positioned above the TRSV, the LV4 valveprovides a barrier for lubrication purposes and protects the TRSV closuremechanism from damage if a toolstring is dropped. e dual control line,balanced-actuation piston used to function the LV4 valve providesunlimited setting depth making it suitable for use anywhere within thecompletion. e ID through the LV4 valve maintains full access to theID of the TRSV ensuring full functionailty of both tools during the lifeof the well.

Closure of the FS and IB valves is achieved using a simplecollet shiing tool attached to the end of the workstringnormally extended through the bore of the valve. Uponretrieval, the collet shiing tool engages the mating“nubbin” shiing profile within the valve, immediatelyisolating the formation and allowing inflow or positivepressure testing above the closed ball.

Following deployment of the upper completion, the FSand IB valves are opened using different methods.

Opening the FS ValveUsing the patented Liquid Spring indexing mechanism,the FS valve is opened remotely by the application of apredetermined number of pressure cycles, appliedthrough the tubing string. Unlike other remote triggeringdevices, the liquid spring mechansim requires no wellspecific set up and enhances long-term suspensioncapability. e valve opens when the applied pressure isremoved, therefore avoiding surging the formation.Opening is facilitated by the valve’s power spring and

boost piston, which provide the necessary force to openthe valve in applications where extreme debrisconditions may exist.

Opening the IB Valvee IB valve is opened mechnically using a collet shiingtool attached to the end of the upper completion.Immediately prior to landing the upper completion theIB valve is mechanically opened by the collet shiing toolproviding access to the reservoir.

Completion ChallangeTo provide a reliable fluid loss control valve for use incompletions where fluid loss is undesirable or needs to becontrolled.

SolutionAs the industry moves into more hostile environments,the challenges facing completion engineers become morecomplex. e need to balance operational andenvironmental concerns means that it is not always feasibleor practical to prevent formation damage through the useof chemical-based completion fluid systems alone. Coupledwith increased water depths, hydrostatic pressures oenexceed that of the formation making it difficult to completea well. Installation of a fluid loss control valve satisfies allthe above requirements.

e FS (remote open) and IB (mechanical open) fluid losscontrol devices use high-performance ball mechanismsthat provide a positive bi-directional seal in brine andoil-based mud environments. Valve selection is based oncompletion design and is application specific.
