The race to find New Zealand’s most innovative Kiwi is on, strengthened by the announcement that XPO Exhibitions has partnered with NZ Engineering News as a principle sponsor of the event.
“It’s about innovation and excellence,” says Engineering News’ editor, Greg Robertson. “We wanted to find a common platform – a base, something simple like a Kiwi – and challenge the genius minds and creative hands of the engineering and manufacturing industries.”
He says the challenge is about showcasing just what the industry can do, adding that the more creative the Kiwi competition entries are then the greater attention this event will garner on a national level.
“This is about an event that fosters pride and passion in country skill and origin of build, and a chance to put quality, innovation and excellence in front of the people of New Zealand – in the form of an icon that they trust - so our market sector can start the well-de-served process of stepping out of the shadows of other industries that tend to grab more media attention.”
The competition will be open for entry on October 1, with rules, prizes and deadlines announced in the October issue of Engineering News and online, including a solid promotional campaign through social media.
“XPO getting on board provides a business-partner that packs punch and can help make this event a true success, worthy of one that reflects the vibrant industries that we’re hoping it will become an established part of,” says Mr Robertson.
Finalists will show their entries at EMEX 2018, to be held in Auckland May 1-3, with winners of the two categories (Professional and Student) announced at the show.
XPO Exhibitions, organiser of EMEX, says it is delighted to be partnering with Hayley Media, publisher of NZ Engineering News, on The Great Kiwi Engineering Challenge.
“As the largest industry trade show (EMEX) and the largest industry publication (NZEN), we are working closely on this project to make sure it centres around true Kiwi manufacturing prowess - a chance for the industry to think outside the square and explore new technology horizons with this project - there’s really no limit,” says Brent Spillane, managing director of XPO.
Entries can take all forms within the engineering sector’s elements; machined metal, 3D printed, robotic etc, with judging focusing on innovation, concept, skill application, out-side-of-box thinking and excellence. Entries must fit inside a 1 cubic metre shape.
Mr Spillane says that New Zealand’s biggest show for the engineering and manufacturing sectors has, at its core, been working hard to celebrate manufacturing innovation.
“EMEX is about demonstrating what applications, design and innovative manufacturing can come out of the plant, equipment and technology (all on display at the show), so this competition was a natural fit,” says Mr Spillane.
“In past years, we’ve seen a paradigm-shift in adoption rates of 3D printing and far more layers of high-tech software and tooling in CNC machines. We’d love to see how the machines, tooling and technology on offer at EMEX are utilised in this project. Couple this with a loyal crowd of 5500 industry visitors to the show and we’ve really got the makings for something special to come out of this competition.
“EMEX 2018 is getting right behind the Great Kiwi Engineering Challenge - you’ll see a great deal of promotion happening across our show launch period. The industry needs as much help as it can get to champion sector innovation and we’re sure this partnership is a step in the right direction.”
