HABIB PUBLIC SCHOOL Habib Public School Issue # 6 NEWSLETTER DECEMBER 2016 Dear Readers, The End of this year heralds the beginning of 2017. At HPS we like to reflect on and evaluate our accomplishments of the year. The achievements of the school is the sum total of the abilities of all its students. When they win we win, when they rise so do all the people involved in guiding them and when they shine so shines the entire Habib Public School. Our students have continued to rise to our every expectation and often to surpass them. This newsletter is a testament to their competitive skills and abilities. Be it a speech competition, sports or academics; our students have participated and brought home prizes as representatives of our school. In these troubled times it is more important than ever to highlight the concept of global citizenship. HPS has joined the Connecting Classrooms project, where we exchange our inclusive projects with select schools nationally and internationally. This year our students had an opportunity to interact with children from the Special Olympics, learn and teach our local language to a partner school, share ideas for environmental responsibility and learn about the effects of the wastage of food. Some of these projects have been mentioned in this newsletter. We wish you a wonderful new year and hope that you will continue to support us in making your children become global citizens which we can all be proud of. Junior Section Earth Day Earth Day is an event celebrated worldwide on 22nd April. The main purpose of Earth Day is to unite the people of many different cultures for a single purpose Care for the Earth, and to eliminate the problems of pollution of soil, air and water.

The students of Habib Public School Junior Section made hand bands, badges, wrist bands, and book marks in their classes to mark this day.

A pledge signing activity was also performed. Students wrote and signed ‘My Earth Day Pledge’ making a promise to the Mothethr Ear that they will keep it clean and take care of it.

Another activity was a plantation drive at school. Students contributed plants and planted them with the help of the gardener on the school premises.

An activity regarding ‘Save the trees’ was carried out by the students of Class IV who fixed the slogans on different trees at the school in Junior Section to remember the importance of trees throughout the year.

Independence Day HPS Junior Section celebrated the 69th

Independence Day of Pakistan on Friday 12th August in the school Gymnasium. Students wore white shalwar kameez and green scarves.

They carried Pakistani flags in their hands. A flag hoisting ceremony was held during the morning assembly in the school ground. The students later went to the gymnasium to enjoy the performances prepared by the students.

The choir group sang national and patriotic songs that aroused the audience who sang along.

Students shared information regarding the Minare-e-Pakistan, and Quaid-e-Azam’s Mausoleum and also delivered speeches on the importance of freedom.

The Gymnasium was decorated with different monuments and paintings showing different cultures of Pakistan.

The celebration concluded with a cake cutting ceremony.

Defence Day Defence Day was celebrated on September 6

with great enthusiasm in Junior Section.

Students sang National songs to pay tribute to our heroic soldiers and martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the sovereignty and prosperity of the nation.

Kangaroo Mathematics Contest The event was held on March 17. The spirit of the contest was to enhance and develop student’s ability of analytic thinking. Kangaroo Competition is not about memorizing; rather it’s about giving students an opportunity to apply mathematical concepts in various ways.

This also gives an exposure to the students about what the children in other countries of the world are doing. 103 students from class I and class II participated at the Pre Ecoliers Level where Rafay Abbas and Muhammad Hamdan Mazhar were awarded a Bronze Medal. 64 students from class III and class IV participated at the Ecoliers Level. Abdullah Zahid and Mohammad Saadullah were awarded a Bronze Medal.

30 students of class V and VI participated at the Benjamin Level. Syed Mohammad Akbar Abbas Rizvi and Suhaib Khan were awarded Bronze Medal.

International Kangaroo Science Competition 2016 The International Kangaroo Science Contest (IKSC) was held on September 29, 2016. 170 students of Junior Section participated in the contest.

The entire purpose of this competition was to bring out the hidden talents of the students by exposing them to thought-provoking questions and thus ushering them into the challenging realm of science. S. Hussain Mehdi of class 2, Ashhad Hassan Khwaja of class 3, Huzaifa of class 4, Syed Saadullah, Shaheer Ahmed and Ayan Mumtaz from class 5 were awarded Gold Medals.

Qirat-o-Naat Competition Inter House Qirat competition was held in the School Gymnasium on 2nd September, 2016. This competition was between the students of different houses from classes II to V.

The Youngsters confidently did the Tilawat of the sacred Quranic verses and were judged on different categories like selection of Surah, pronunciation, voice and tempo.

Inter House Na’at Competition was held on 3rdSeptember, 2016.

The students recited different famous Na’ats. They were judged on the selection of Na’at, pronunciation, voice and tempo. Blue House was announced the winner of the competition.

Presentation - Food Wastage Wastage of food has become a global issue. It is an ever-growing threat which has a strong financial and environmental impact. Lessons learned early in life can prompt a lifetime of smart habits. Keeping this in mind HPS organized a short workshop for the training of children to give them an awareness of food wastage.

Since HPS is a part of the Connecting Classrooms project, this activity became an

integral theme to share with an Indian school. Dr. Ayesha conducted a detailed presentation with Class II. A Number of topics were discussed related to food wastage.

The children were told about the appropriate food portion to be taken for meals so as to avoid any leftovers. The various ways to reduce wastage were discussed. The kids were enlightened with the fact that food is a

blessing and therefore should be respected.

The children shared their insightful views too and made the activity a success by their keen involvement and interesting suggestions.

Hand Washing Activity Dr. Ayesha organized a hand washing activity in collaboration with the Dettol Company on 10th November 2016. Students of Junior Section from class I to V participated.

A movie was shown about how to fight germs and the procedure of washing hands. This was followed by a quiz and the winners were awarded prizes. The Dettol Company gave medals to all the students.

Iqbal Day Iqbal Day was celebrated in the month of November in the morning assembly.

Students delivered speeches and skits on this occasion.

A very unfortunate incident occurred on 31-8-2016. ALI SHAAN of class lll-0, met with an accident and was not able to survive. May Allah rest his soul in peace and

give courage to the parents, relatives and friends to bear this great loss. The management and the staff of Habib Public School is highly grieved at the irreparable loss of the brilliant student. ALI SHAAN will be missed by teachers and his fellow Habibians.

Senior Section Independence Day Habibians as always celebrated

69th Independence Day with a lot of pride. The

program was scheduled on Friday 12th August at

the school gymnasium.

With the playing of the National Anthem by the

School Brass Brand the program officially

started.

Habibians took their pledge after the recitation of

the Quran and Naat. Students and Teachers took

part in National Songs while waving the national

flag to express their patriotic fervor.

Habibians also took part in delivering English

Speeches, performed an Urdu skit and a Tableau.

In the end the School Vice Principal shared her

views about the day with the audience and

appreciated the Habibians for their love for the

country.

International Projects HPS has been striving to keep up with the expectations of the vision of rendering high quality all round education to prepare responsible future citizens. In addition to class room activities students are given opportunities to participate in International Projects.

iEARN Youth Exchange Program The program provides students from over 40 countries an opportunity to study at American high schools and live with American host families for one Academic year. The scholarship is funded by the US government.

This year two students, Asjad Ali and Shayan Askari qualified and were selected for the YES program.

Connecting Classrooms This is a global education programme introduced by the British Council in partnership with the Department for International Development. It offers different programmes to improve

classroom learning and develop ideas with teachers internationally. HPS is working with local and international partner schools to share lessons and activities that promote global citizenship. Our activities for the year will include the following: Earth Day Making the Right Choice. (To develop a

sense of responsibility and leadership. To practice the freedom of speech and understand the power of vote in a democracy.)

Journey Around the Globe (to learn about diversity of cultures around the world)

Something for Everyone! (a lesson on family values)

Taste buds on a Voyage. (To learn about the history of food and its nutritional value. Also to study the popular cuisines of different countries and their origins.)

Learning Language (to generate the feeling of global connection through learning phrases of languages of different regions.)

Clean the plate! (to learn the value of eating right)

Turning deficiencies into efficiencies (an opportunity to interact with athletes from the Special Olympics)

Credentials

DICE Youth Innovation

Habib Public School participated in Governor’s DICE Youth Innovation Event which was organized by DICE Foundation, in collaboration with its domestic and international partners.

Two students Hamza Irfan and Abdul Sami of

class X participated in the event with an innovative idea of producing renewable energy using low cost raw material.

Habib Public School secured an Award of Appreciation and a cash prize of Rs. 10,000.

Indus Hospital Family Six students participated in the Indus hospital family carnival at PAF museum. They set up a games stall at the carnival and managed to raise more than fifteen thousand rupees for the cause.

The left over gifts arranged by Habib Public School were donated to the Children's Cancer Hospital. This activity provided our students with an opportunity to learn the value of team work, leadership skills and a sense of humanity and care.

Karachi Star Kids and Youth Family Festival Karachi Star Kids and Youth Family Festival was organized by Youth Ka Pakistan in collaboration with Education and Literacy Department Government of Sindh.

A team of 15 students participated in the science exhibition with the concept of generating renewable energy; a prototype model was demonstrated. HPS received an appreciation award for their wonderful work.

Explore Pakistan 2016 Habib Public School organized an Educational and Recreational tour Explore Pakistan 2016.

The group of twenty five students and five staff members visited famous landmarks of Lahore, Muree, Islamabad, Taxila, Katas Raj, and Kashmir along with Northern areas of Pakistan.

The main highlight of the tour was a visit to the Senate and the National Assembly. Students were also made to attend a session conducted by the representatives of the Senate and were briefed about their work.

A shield of honor was awarded to Habib Public School on behalf of the Federation of Pakistan by the Chairman Senate Mian Raza Rabbani. Students were gifted with a book about the history of the Constitution of Pakistan as a souvenir. Students also presented a memento to the Chairman. They had an opportunity to visit the Pakistan Air Force Academy Lower Topa near Bhurban, and meet the former Vice Chief of Air Staff. They were briefed about the institution by the PAF officials.

The visit to the temples of Katas Raj was a memorable one. The tour resulted as an effective learning opportunity. It promoted leadership skills, discipline and self confidence among the students.

Bonfire It was a beautiful evening with students getting together in the school field. Students and staff sat together around the massive pile of burning wooden logs.

The evening was followed by a sleep over of students and male staff members at school.

The Annual Expedition Habib Public School organized its Annual Duke of Edinburgh Expedition.

Students are required to stay at the school for two days and one night. They were taken for hiking to Mubarak village. The hiking expedition was followed by a night stay at school.

The second day, students were taken for a beach cleaning activity.

The School Results

The Cambridge International Syndicate Areeb Zafar, Muhammad Mudassir, Huzaifa Tahir and Shahpar Nafees secured 10 straight A’s.

34 students out of the batch of 66 scored 5 As or more.

The Agha Khan University Examination SSC 28 students out of the batch of 80 scored A and A+.

Bagh Hoti scored 1st position in Principle of Accounts.

High Achiever for HSSC M. Ghazanfar Sakrani secured 1st Position and M. Owais secured 2nd Position in the Commerce group all over Pakistan.

Model United Nations Conferences KIETMUN This was organized by PAF-KIET University with over 600 delegates.

Areeb Zafer, Muhammad Ahsan and Hamza Najeeb received Honorable Mention.

PIMUN The conference had international delegates and committee directors from countries like Ukraine, Peru, Nigeria, Sweden, Denmark and India. Habibians brought glory to our school in the form of 7 awards and the very prized “Best Delegation Award”.

Areeb Zafer, Saad Zafar, Hamza Najeeb, Syed Murtaza & Uzair Qureshi as Best Delegates. Saqib Dawoodani received Honorable Mention and Muhammad Arhum as Special Mention

ZABMUN This is one of the biggest conferences in Asia, ZABMUN. Over 800 delegates from renowned institutes all over Karachi participated in the conference.

Areeb Zaffar was awarded as Best Delegate and S.M. Arryan received Special Mention.

DALMUN Habibians bagged 10 awards at Dawood ‘A’ level Model United Nations. Razique and Hamza Najeeb Best Delegates. Hamza Edhi received Honorable Mention and Best Brand Ambassador.

While Abdullah Tanweer, Ali Ahmed, Shayan Askari, Mousab Rehmani, Adil Majeed, Faizan Faisal and Hamza Edhi received Honorable Mentions.

HPSMUN Habib Public School’s very own Model United Nation conference was held.

A platform was set for the Habibians where they were provided a forum to learn the art of public speaking and discuss global issues.

HPS will hold its first Inter School MUN in January’17 where it aims to host around 500 delegates from different renowned schools.

Inter House Competitions

Throughout the year HPS provides opportunities to the students to develop diverse skills. Competitions are held house wise and a record of house points is maintained.

Habib Public School celebrated student’s week. This comprised of events in six different categories. These included Paksitan Quiz, Husn-e-Qirat o Na’at, Bait bazi, National song competition, Art competition, Bi lingual Declamatoin, and Urdu Fehmi.

Competitions were conducted in which students from class VI to XI participated while representing their houses.

Inter School Competitions

Ghulaman-e-Abbas School Nabwi Contest Azhar Zaidi secured 1st position in Na’at Competition and Daniyal Raza was awarded

a consolation prize. A championship trophy was awarded to HPS which was declared as School of the Day.

International School of Studies Elocution Contest The 1st Interschool Elocution Competition, organized by International School of Studies was held on 10th Nov. 2016 at PACC.

Sarosh secured 2nd position.

2nd Bi-lingual Declamation This was organized by Reflections. 22 renowned schools participated where

M. Daniyal Raza secured 1st Position in Urdu and Abdullah Tanveer secured 2nd Position in English.

Impromptu Speech Contest The contest organized by Korangi Academy was held at SKBZ. M. Adil secured the 1st Position Trophy and a cash prize of Rs.5,000/- Hamza Edhi secured the Audience Choice Trophy and a cash prize of Rs 2,000/-

HPS was awarded the Winning Trophy for Best School Performance.

3rd Bi-lingual Declamation This was organized by Generation School. Yusha Khalid of class VI secured 1st Position in Urdu.

Inter School Math Olympiad

Basim Mehmood of class IX secured 1st Prize.

Mathlers Mathlers designed a 3 months competition for schools in Karachi. 2,700 students from different renowned schools of Karachi participated in the contest.

Basim Mehmood of class IX Camb won the First Position and received a cash price of Rs. 50,000/- Shaheer Luqman won a Consolation prize.

Centre for Educational Assessment and Testing Services CEATS organized its mathematics contest in January 2016. Sixteen hundred candidates of 450 schools, from all over Pakistan participated in the contest.

Basim Mehmood of class IX Camb. secured 2nd position all over Pakistan. He has been awarded a shield and a Silver Medal. Karachi Youth Festival 2016 Karachi Youth Festival 2016 was organized by the Arts Council of Pakistan. Among 27,500 participants registered in 12 categories Habibian Ayyan Rashid of Class X-O secured 1st Position in Photography and won a Cash

Prize of Rs 10,000/- awarded by Governor Sindh Dr. Ishrat-ul-Ibad.

Habibian Youth Fest Following in the tradition of hosting inter-school events, this year too, a 3 day event was organized which comprised of 8 different categories of competitions.

Renowned personalities like Prof Seher Ansari, Mr Waseem Badami and Ms Rubina Naqvi attended as Chief Guests along with famous personalities as judges who evaluated each category of the competition. Sixteen renowned schools participated.

The events were Urdu Fehmi, Pakistan Quiz, National Song , Bilingual AD-LIB, Film Making, Photography, Still Life and 3D ART Competition.

Youm-e-Hussain A.S Habib Public School organized its 41st Youm-e-Hussain on Thursday, November 3, 2016.

The first session was conducted by the Junior Section. Students from Class I to V recited Nohas, Salams and delivered speeches. In the second session the students of Senior Section participated. Students recited Soz, Salam, Marsiya and Noha to pay honor to the Grandson of Prophet Muhammad, Imam-e-Aali Maqam. Students also delivered speeches highlighting the message of Karbala.

Molana Nusrat Bukhari was the guest speaker on the day. He also highlighted the lessons we should learn from the dignified sacrifice of Imam-e-Hussain a. s.

Tabarruk was distributed among the staff and the students.

Convocation 2016 The Habib Public School’s Convocation for the Class of 2016 (O-Level, SSC, HSSC) was held on Saturday, November 26, 2016 at the HPS gymnasium. A total of 197 students were

awarded trophies and certificates in various disciplines on the basis of their outstanding academic and co-curricular performances.

The Convocation was attended by Trustees, Members of the Habib Family, Management and Staff of Habib Public School as well as many Educationists, Dignitaries, Graduating students, their Parents and various Alumni. The renowned Gastroenterologist (Tamgha-e-Imtiaz) - Habibian of 1976 Batch Dr. Saad

Khalid Niaz (MBBS) (MRCP) (FRCP) was the Chief Guest on the occasion. The chief guest was welcomed with the National Anthem, followed by a Guard of Honor. The ceremony formally started with the recitation and translation of verse from the Holy Quran. The Principal, Mrs. Nargis Alavi highlighted the meritorious services of the Chief Guest and his sacrifices for the country. Vice Principal, Ms. Shahwar Ahmad addressed the audience and shared the progress report of the School for the year 2015-16.

Delivering the convocation address, Mr. Saad Khalid Niaz said that HPS is not just an academic institution but a vision that is reshaping the future of its students. He said

that this degree is only the first milestone of a very long learning roadmap that lies ahead of the students. He said, it’s the Students’ Day today. He believes they will have a remarkable future if they believe in ALLAH and ask for his blessings. Good education and an ethical upbringing are the best gifts parents can bestow on their children. Their dua’as can do

wonders. He emphasized on patriotism and how we should always love our country and keep asking ourselves ‘What have we done for our country’? Also we should always be ready to help others in whatever way we can and never show arrogance. The valedictorian, Areeb Zafar delivered the speech on behalf of the graduating students. He expressed his gratitude towards all his teachers and batch mates for the wonderful memories they gathered during their school days. In the end Ms. Shireen Zaman congratulated the teachers, parents and graduating students for their hard work and accomplishments.

The ceremony ended with group pictures and refreshments.

Habib Public High School Ship Owner’s College Speech

Competition The competition was held on account of Iqbal Day in which Kumail Raza from HSSC secured 3rd position for his speech on the topic

Scrabble Competition The competition was organized by Pakistan Scrabble Association. 3 students Murtuza Darbar, Burhanuddin Tapal and Shoaib Murtuza from HSSC participated.

Over 800 participants were divided into 6 categories. Habib Public School won the 1st position.

The Inter-House Gymnastic Competition On Friday September 21, 2016, 24 gymnasts from Class I to V took part in the Inter-House Gymnastic Competition.

Sindh Open Swimming Championship 2016 The Championship was held at Karachi Parsi Institute on two consecutive days; Saturday, October 15 and Sunday, October 16, 2016. Habib Public School participated in this Swimming Competition with a team of 45 swimmers. Renowned Schools and Clubs participated in the Championship.

Altogether, 77 events of different age groups were held where Habibians secured 308 Points. Habib Public School won 3rd Position and secured 22 medals.

Habibian Akbar Ali was awarded the title of Group Champion in the under 8 age group.

The Inter-House Swimming Competition HPS Sports department organized an Inter House Swimming Competition on Friday, 7th October, 2016 under the name of Javed Taqi / Saleem Raza Inter House Swimming Competition.

A total of 20 events for different age groups were held at the HPS swimming pool under the supervision of the Sports Department. Principal Nargis Alavi and Vice Principal Shahwar Ahmad were the Chief Guest, where as Mr. Najam Altaf the Joint Secretary of State Bank of Pakistan was the Guest of Honour.

In the Junior Section Blue House won the tournament and Yellow House was the runner up. In the Senior Section Red House secured First Position and Green House was the runner up

HPS Hockey Team Trip to Azlan Shah Stadium, Ipoh, Malaysia An International series of Hockey matches was organized by RAJA ASHMAN SHAH AHF-MHC Hockey Academy in IPOH, PERAK – Malaysia.

A hockey team of 14 Habibians along with the Vice Principal, Sports Manager and a hockey coach accompanied the students and left for Kuala Lumpur on August 17, 2016. Habib Public School played friendly matches with different schools namely Anderson Excellent, Anderson High and Seagate High school. A Guest team from Indonesia also participated in the event. HPS won 2 matches out of 5 where 1 match was a draw and lost 2 matches against Anderson High and Anderson Excellent School.

Closing Ceremony was held on August 24, 2016. HPS Sports Manager, Mr. Kumail Abbas presented souvenirs including the traditional Ajrak and Sindhi caps to the President, Secretary and Treasurer of the Asian Hockey Federation.

Unified Sports – Special Olympics ‘Turning Deficiencies into Efficiencies’, an inspiring pursuit, which can uplift the spirit of any true sportsman.

Unified Sports were organized by Habib Public School with the cooperation of Special Olympics Pakistan; it is also an integral part of International School Award (ISA).

The event was held in the gymnasium where the courts were arranged for basketball, table tennis and badminton. Each team had a balance of special athletes and Habibians. A training session of an hour was held before the matches in order to develop coordination between the players.

The athletes inspired everyone with their spirit of sportsmanship as they played in coordination with their new team mates. This proved how deficiency can be changed into efficiency by working with the strengths of each person. A wonderful collaboration and teamwork could be seen between Habibians and the special athletes which made us all proud.

Inter House Hockey 2016 A Hockey Competition in the name of Haider Hussain, Ex Habibian and current secretary of Karachi Hockey Association was held in the HPS Hockey ground where the Chairman of KHA Mr. Gulfaraz Ahmad Khan, Secretary of

KHA Mr. Haider Hussain and Manager Marketing Mr. Nadeem Jaffery were invited as the guest of honor.

The Final was played between Blue and Yellow House and Blue House won the tournament on the basis of Penalty Strokes.

HSSC Malaysia Trip The HPS Sports department arranged a trip on the Invitational International Hockey Tournament 2016 held at Hulu, Perak in Malaysia.

The College Hockey team participated in the tournament along with 24 other international teams from all over South Asia, namely Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Indonesia, Vietnam and Maldives. HSSC team was able to qualify 2 rounds and lost in the quarter finals 1-0 against a departmental team of Malaysia of May Bank.

Inter School Gymnastics Championship 2016 To promote and introduce Gymnastics at grass root level through schools, HPS has taken the initiative to host an Inter School Gymnastics Championship which was held on Saturday, 3rd December 2016 in the Toyota Gymnasium.

Six Schools participated in the Championship HPS Gymnastics team was declared the winners with a total number of 111 points with 9 Gold, 6 Silver and 4 Bronze medals.

Inter School Football 2016 An Inter-School Football Championship was organized on a grassy field of KN academy Altogether 16 teams participated from renowned schools HPS Football Team won the

Championship. Player of the Tournament was awarded to Habibian Omar Khokhar.
