Habits of Mind

Education is about changing minds.

At its most basic level it is about confronting and changing habits of mind.

Page 4: Habits of Mind

Why are Habits of Mind Important in College?

• It is not enough that we teach skills; we want learners to know when to exercise those skills.

It is not enough that we provide information; we want learners to know what to do with that information.

Mindset MattersFixed Mindset

Each person has a fixed amount of intelligence.

– Can cause students to view challenges threatening

– Can cause students to see mistakes as failures and demoralizing.

Growth Mindset

Intelligence is a potential that can be realized through learning.

– Can help students see challenges as roads to gaining intelligence

– Can help students develop constructive reactions to setbacks or mistakes

“To help chronically low-performing but intelligent students, educators and parents must

first recognize that character is at least as important as intellect.”

To succeed, you need GRIT
