    H i s Early Life

Hadhrat Muawiya + was born five years before theproc lamat ion of ~abawwat ' .~rornhildhood already thesigns of determination and nobility were visible.

Consequently once while still a youth his father AbuSufyan & looked at him and said, "My son has a grandhead and is worthy of being the head of his people".

His mother Hind a & heard this remark and commented,"What! Only the head of his people? I will weep if he doesnot lead the entire Ara b n a t i ~ n . " ~

Once an Arab physiognomist spotted Hadhrat MuawiyaG%while he was playing and commented. "I believe that thisperson will bec ome a leader of his nation". 'Ibn Katheer & writes:

He was that leader whose orders were obeyed and he wasamongst the very wealthy. 4

Concerning the writers of "Wahy" Allaah says:

"Written on honoured pages, Exalted, purified, By thehands of Scribes, honoured righteous" (80- 13114115).

"Oh Allaah, make Muawiya a guide (fo r others), one w hois himself' rightly guided and a mea ns at guid ance for

    8people. "

In another Hadith, Nabi & made the following supplicationfor him saying:

"O h Allaah, teach Muawiya accounting and protect himfro17l the punishment of Jahannam." 'The renowned Sahabi, Hadhrat bin Al-Aas (RA) says thathe. heard Nab@ say:

"O h Allaah, teach hinz the Q ur'an, grant him a strong holdupon the lands and save him from the torment ofJahannam. " "'In addition to this Hadhrat Muawiya& himself said that

once I went to fetch some water for Nabi $i o performWudhu. Upon completion of his Wudhu with this waterNabi & looked at me and said, "Oh Muawiya whengovernorship is given to you (i.e. you beco me a ruler) thenremain fearful of Allaah an d be just".

    Hadrat Muawuya R. A &, 9

In some narrations Nabi % is reported to have added,"Wlzosoever does good deeds, pay attention to him and begood. Wlzosoever does any evil, then overlook it".Afternarrating this Hadith Hadhrat M uawiya2% ays, "After thisstatenzertt of Nabi & the thought stuck to my mind thatIwould definitely be tried with this responsibility.Consequently events transpired likewise (i.e.I was madethe ruler)".

On e narration even has it that once Nabi & consulted withHadhrat Abu Bakr and Umar & regarding som e affair butwhen both were unable to propose a suitable solution Nabi& said.

"Call M unwiya and present the case before hinz because he

is very authoritative (in counselling) and trustworrlzy (i.e.he would not give wrorzg advice)."

There is yet another Hadith wherein Nabi & mounted hisconveyance seating Hadhrat Muawiya 4~ behind him. After a short while Nabi k sked him, "Oh Muawiya &,which part of your body is touching mine?"

he replied, "O h Rasul of Allaah , my abdomen (and chesr)is touching your blessed body".

Upon hearing this Nabi $& supplicated for him thus:

    "O h Allaa h, Ji'll him with knowledge." "

Hadhrat Muawiya & in the Opinion ofthe Sahaabah &.

On one occasion Hadhrat M uawiya was insulted in the

remarked "Do not speak ill of that youth of th e Qua rishwho laughs when in anger (i.e. he is extremely .forbearingand tolerant) and from whom nothing is taken except withhis consent. Whatever is above his head cannot be snatchedfrom him but after bowing to his feet (i.e. he is very brave

    and possessive.) l 6

    Hadrat Muawuya R.A+ 11

It has also been narrated thdt Hadhrat Umar.+ once said,"O h people! Do no t split into fractions after demise. If youpeople will not take heed then bear in mind that Muawiyais still present in Shaam. "

    '

Hadhrat Umar & would also say regarding him, "Youpeople praise the Kaiser, the Cosroe and their knowledgeand dexterity whereas in your midst Muawiya is present?!"

Hafiz Ibn Hajr .+ reports that when Hadhrat Ali& returnedfrom the battle at Siffin he addressed the people thus, " O hpeople! do not disapprove of Hadhrat Muawiya A'sgovernorship, for verily if you lose, you will witness headsfalling from their shoulders just as the fruits of the wildgourd tree brea k and drop down". l9

Once a complaint was lodged before Hadhrat Ibn Abbaas4- regarding Hadhrat Muawiya & verdict concerning som:issue. The former commented, "He is definitely a Jurist1~irn.selj~20 M eaning that whatever he does is based on thegrounds of his in-depth know ledge and understanding.

Another report is that Ibn Ab baas & said,

"Verily Muawiya w as honoured with the companionslzip ofNabi&t therefore objecting to him is worthless." 21

Hadhrat Ibn Abbaas &+ also said.

"O h nzy son! Whatever Hadhrat Muawiya &- has done iscorrect .for there is none among st us more learned thanhirn. " 2

    Hadrat Muaw uya R.A 12

As far as mundane matters were concerned Hadhrat IbnAbbaas 4% assessment is well known that,

" I have not jound any more deserving a nd cupable ofsovereignty tha n Muawiya".2"

    Words of Hadhrat Umar.A

bin Sa'ad have been recorded inthe famous book of Hadith Tirmidhi when, after he wasdismissed by H adhrat Umar& Farooq from the governor'spost of Hims, he severely reprimanded the citizens therewhen some of them started speaking ill of his successorHadhrat Muawiya &%, he informed them,

"Speak only ,favourable of Muawiya because I Iznve hocrrdNabi ,+$supplicate in his ,favo ur.Oh Allaalz! guide other..^by

    1, 24lneans c?f Muawiya.

Hadhrat Ibn Umar +% said, "I lzave not fburzdanothev nloveworthy qf'ruling that Muawiya". "Hadhrat Sa'ad bin Abu Warqaas Ad, ho was amongst theten people. given the glad tidings of entering Jannat andwho remained neutral during the battle between Hadhrat 'sAli 4- and Hadhrat Muawiya 2%, s reported to have said, "I/lave not seen anyone more decisive afterUthnznn thanMunwiya".2"

Hadhrat Qabiusa bin Jabir & has said, "I lzave not seen

anyone w ho is more tolerant that Muawiya ,neitlzer anyonemore wor.tlzy of governing, nor anyon e mo re digrlzfied, softhearted or more magnanimous than him." 27

From these few reports it can be adequately determinedwhat high opinions the Sahaba Kiraam held concerningHadhrat Muawiya +&, and what a lofty status he held intheir sight.

    Hadrat Muawuya R.A & 13

Hadhrat Muawiya & in the Opinion of theTabieen

What was his status among the Tabieen? This can beevaluated from the fact that Hadhrat Umar bin Abdil A ziz-% did not lash anyone during his entire reign of Khilafatexcept one person who spoke insultingly of HadhratMuawiya 4. H e ordered the lashing of only this person.1-8

Hafiz Ibn Katheer & explains that the famous TabeeHadhrat Abdullah bin Mubaruk d5 was asked aboutHadhrat Muawiy a dk, upon which he replied, "What can Isay regarding suclz a person who pecf2)nned S~i la at ehindNabi jg , and who, when the leader. of both worlds ~ n i d"Saruziul-li-nla n-hnrrzdidalz': e replied ,"Rn00-0a-nnkaI-lzanzd". 29

To the very same Hadhrat Abdullah bin Mubarak (RA) th equestion was posed that who is better Hadhrat Mu awiya2-or Hadhrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz (RA )? The questionsplaced, on one side, that Sahabi upon when all sorts ofcriticisms were levelled and on the other side thatillustrious Tabiee regarding where eminence the entireUmmah agree. Upon hearing this question HadhratAbdullah bin Mubarak (RA) became angry and remarked" Y ~ L Lnquire about a cornparison between those two?!I

swear by Allaah that the dust which entered the nostri1.rofHadlzt-at Mu awiy a.& while fighting in Jihaad by the side ofNabi $& is better than Hadhrat Uma r bin Abdul Aziz( R A )".30

    Hadrat Muawuya R.A & 14

A similar question was posed to Hadhrat Ma'afi bin Imraan. He was also infuriated and said "How can a Tabiee ever beequal to a Sahabi? Hadhrat Muawiya 4 was a companionof Nabi ,@ his sister was betrothed to Nabi ,$& Kareem andhe used to write and safeguard Divine Revelation. How can

any Tabiee hope to reach this status?': He then concludedby stating the following Hadith of Nabi $$ which states:"Whosoever speaks ill of any of my companions orrelatives, then Allaah's curse is upon him."

The renowned, Tabee Ahnat bin Qais (RA) was famous forhis tolerance and forbearance amongst the A rabs. Once hewas asked "Who is more tolerant? Yours elf or HadhratMuawiya &3 ? He replied "I have not seen anyone moreignorant than you! Hadhrat Muawiya & was tolerantwhile irz a position of authority and pow er whereas Ipractice .forbearance without any authorit ative position. Therefore how can I surpass him? How can I evenendeavour to equal

    Some Historical Events

Consequently Hadhrat Muawiya & prepared the first navalfleet in Muslim history and set sail for Qu brus on 27AHwith a group of Sahaba Kiraam . 37

This was the first naval expedition in Islaam ic history. The

renowned historian Ibn Khaldun writes, "Ha dhrat Muawiya4 3 , was the first Khalifa who had a naval fleet prepared andthrough him did the Muslims get permission for a navalJihaad. ''

    1

Imaam Bukhari (RA) has recorded the Hadith of Nabi $5I

wherein he had said, '1"The first army of my Ummat to engage in a battle at seawill make Jannat compulsory upon themselves." 39

    Hadrat Muawuya R.A & 15

This fact can be ascertained from the faith-kindling letterwhich Hadhrat M~~awiya wrote to the Kaiser of Romeduring the very period of this dispute when the Kaiser, noticing the winds of war blowing decided to snatch theopportunity, to initiate some military manoeuvres along the

    borders of Shaam. Hadhrat Muawiya4

received news ofthis and dispatched a letter to the Kaiser writing, "I havereceived intelligence of your intentions to mobilize yourforces at our borders. Take heed! If you do so, I willimmediately m ake peace with my companion Hndhrat Ali&> nd our en suing army which will march inclusive of mein the first r egiment, will turn Constantinople into asmouldering c harcoal. "

When this lett er reached the Kaiser he immediately tookheed and term inated all military activities. * He knew verywell that thes e people confronted Kufr as one body andsoul, and tha t their differences were unlike those ofpolitical leader s.

In addition to this Allama Ibn Khaldun relates that whenHadhrat Muaw iya 4% decided to make peace with HadhratHasan (RA) , he requested for a blank sheet of paper andplaced his sea l at the bottom. He then sent the paper toHadhrat Hasan (RA) with the message that I am sendingyou this blan k paper whereupon is my seal, whatever

conditions you wish to write, I will accept. "I

Allama Ibn Katheer (RA) writes, "When Hadhrat Hasan(RA) had negotiated the pact and returned to Madinah, then one person began criticising him for the truce hereplied, 'Do not rebuke me .for I have heard Nabi ,& saythat the days and nights will not seize to alternate untilHadhrat Muawiya & does not become Ameer'. " "He remained Ameerul Mumneen for 41 years.60 Reflectingupon his reign at Khalafat, Hafiz bin Katheer (RA) writes,"The entire Muslim populous pledged their allegiance to

co~nfor t nd jus tice and ~e cu r i ty . " ~ 'Hadhrat Muawiya -h paid special attention to winning overhearts, administering justice and fulfilling righk6' For thisreason Hadhrat Sa'ad bin Waqas & , on e of the AshuraMubbashera said, " I have not seen, after Uthrnalz 2+-,anyone ~ z o r e ecisive that Hadhrat Muawiya 2%.

Hadhrat Abu Ishaq As-Sabi'ee (RA) wouldsay, "Zf you hadto .see Mua~viya r lived in his era, you would (because ofh is j ~ u t i c e )say he is Imanz M ahdi." ""

It is also narrated that Hadhrat Mujahid (RA) said, "If youhad lived ~ I Lhe time of Hadhrat Muawiya A- yo^^ wouldsay that Ize i s Im am M ahdi." 6 s

Once in a gathering of Iman A'mash (RA), a personhappened to make mention of Hadhrat Umar bin AbdulAziz (RA ), hearing this, the Imam comm ented, " I f y o u h adseen the tinze of Hadlzrat Muawiya & then you wouldk~zow!"The people asked "Are you referring to histolerarzce and jbrbearance? He replied, "No but to hisjustice and unbiased attitude". 66

Ibn Tamiya (R A) writes, "Hadhrat Muawiya &'.s treatmentof his s~lbjectswas that of the best of leaders. They lovedhinz dearly. In Bukhari and Muslirn an authentic Haditlztells us that, 'The best ojlead ers are those who love peopleand they in turn, are loved by tlze people. Each one ofthem

    I 1, 7 0prays jbr the other.

    Hadrat Muawuya R.A &b 17

H i s Tolerant and So ft Nature

In this regard Hadhrat Jabir (RA) says, "I have not .fbundanother as tolerant as Muawiya. " 7"

Hadhrat Muawiya &- himself says, "The ple as~ lre get fronz

    s~val lowing n ynger. I get porn ~zothing lse."78

However, this tolerance was only practised if Deen or thestate was not affected by it. Therefore, if ever the situation

I calleJ for an iron hand, he would act accordingly and wasuncompromising in his principles, allowing no room forundue leniency. He says himself, "I will not be nu2 obstaclebetween any person and his tongue ns Long as he is not anobstcrcle to tlze state". '"Once, when outlining political principles, he said,

'Wherever rny whip sufice.~ wil l not use my .sword, wherever m y to ngue sl&fiic:esI will not use wzy whip. V t h epeople tug ntit 1 will loosen 11 7y grip and when they relax their grip I willpull.'80

    H i s Love for Nabi g

He had much love and a deep relationship with Nabi %.Once he came to learn of a person in Basra who greatlyresembled Nabi 2. e sent a message to the governor ofBasra, to immediately send the person to him with utmostdignity and honour. When the person arrived, HadhratMuawiya bk personally advanced to welcome him andshowered him with gifts and a robe of hongur.82

Due to the same love for Nabi $F, he preserved some ofNabi &Is cut nails, his cloth and some hair regardin g whichhe bequested to be placed in his nose, ears and eyes and beburied with him. x 3

Due to this relationship with Nabi A, many of his waysbear a striking resemblence of the manners of Nabi W .Hadhrat Abu Darda (Radiallahu anhu) says, "I have notfound anyone's salaat so similar to Nabi g' s salaat thanthat of Muawiya's". 85

It was this same love which drove him towhole heartedlyaccept every work and deed of NabiA.
