ISLAM comes from the root word ‘salaam’, which means peace. It also means submitting one’s will to Allah (swt). Thus Islam is a religion of peace, which is acquired by submitting one’s will to the will of the Supreme Creator, Allah (swt) The literal meaning of Islam is peace; surrender of one’s will i.e. losing oneself for the sake of God and surrendering one’s own pleasure for the pleasure of God.

WHY MUSLIM PREFER TO CALL ALLAH? The Muslims prefer calling the Supreme Creator, Allah, instead of by the English word God. The Arabic word, ‘Allah’, is pure & unique, unlike the English word ‘God’, which can be played around with. If you add ‘s’ to the word God, it becomes ‘Gods’, that is the plural of God. Allah is one & singular, there is no plural of Allah. Therefore the Muslims prefer using the Arabic word Allah for the Almighty.

ALLAH IS ALL-HEARING (AS SAMEE): We can pray to him wherever we are! You can pray to Him to make your daily work easy. You can pray to Him to get you out of your troubles & problems. You can pray to Him to make your wishes come true. Ask Him for help. Ask only Him for help. You can ask Him for help quietly or loudly. He hears everything all the time. And how well He hears! Allah can hear us even without moving our lips. He is as-Samee’!

PROSTRATE: But celebrate the praises of thy Lord, and be of those who prostrate themselves in adoration. And serve thy Lord until there come unto thee the Hour that is Certain. (Qur’an 15: 98-99)

PRAYER: Guard strictly your (habit of) prayers, especially the Middle Prayer; and stand before Allah in a devout (frame of mind). If ye fear (an enemy), pray on foot, or riding, (as may be most convenient), but when ye are in security, celebrate Allah’s praises in the manner He has taught you, which ye knew not (before). (Qur’an 2: 238-239)

THE ANGELS: The Arabic word for Angel is Malak. Malaa’ikah is its plural. Allah created the Angels. He created them just as He created Man and everything else. They are made of light. We cannot see them, but we know that they are there! This because Allah’s messenger (P.b.u.h) told us so. Angels are Allah’s servants. They obey Him all the time. They carry out his commands. They have no power to disobey Allah.

THE ANGELS: Allah wanted man to obey him, So he sent Angel Jibreel (A.S) to Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h). Angel Jibreel told the Prophet what Allah wanted man to do. Jibreel (A.S) brought the Qur’an to the Prophet (P.b.u.h) at the command of Allah. This was Jibreel’s Duty. Allah sent Angel Jibreel (A.S) to many prophets before prophet Muhammad (P.b.u.h).

THE ANGELS: There are many Angels. Different Angels do different duties. Angel Jibreel (A.S) is one of them. Every one of us has two Angels who remain with him all the time. They never leave him, and they write down everything he does or says! They write down his good action and bad actions. Mikaa’eel, Israafeel, Ridahwan and Jibreel are also some of the Angels. A Muslim believes in all of Allah’s angels.

REASON TO GO TO FIRE (HELL): "What led you into Hell Fire?" They will say: "We were not of those who prayed (Qur’an 74: 42-43)

REASON TO GO TO FIRE (HELL):: So woe to the worshippers. who are neglectful of their prayers (Qur’an 107: 4-5)

ABANDONING OF SALAH: But after them there followed a posterity who missed prayers and followed after lusts soon, then, will they face Destruction (Qur’an 19: 59)

EMINENCE OF SALAT: The believers must (eventually) win through,- Those who humble themselves in their prayers; (Qur’an 23: 1-2)

HIJAB FOR WOMAN:   O Prophet! Tell thy wives and daughters, and the believing women, that they should cast their outer garments over their persons (when abroad): that is most convenient, that they should be known (as such) and not molested. And Allah is Oft- Forgiving, Most Merciful. (Qur'an 33:59)

HIJAB: Narrated Anas: Um Haritha came to Allah's Apostle….. a place equal to a foot in Paradise is better than the whole world & whatever is in it; & if one of the women of Paradise looked at the earth, she would fill the whole space between them with light, & would fill whatever is in between them, with perfume, & the veil of her face is better than the whole world & whatever is in it." (Sahih Al-Bukhari Vol. 8, Hadith # 572)

ISLAM: The literal f Islam is peace; surrender of one’s will i.e. losing oneself for the sake of God and surrendering one’s own pleasure for the pleasure of God. The message of Islam was revealed to the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings on him) 1, 400 years ago. It was revealed through angel Gabriel (on whom be peace) and was thus preserved in the Holy Quran. The Holy Quran carries a Divine guarantee of safeguard…

Page 43: Hadith & qur'an

THE BOOKS OF ALLAH: Allah sent prophets to guide man. Allah sent guidance to us through his prophets. This guidance of Allah is called wahi. The English word for Wahi is revelation. Revelation means to make Wahi (revelation) is the gift of Allah to man. Who brought the Wahi to the Prophets? It was Angel Jibreel (A.S) who brought Wahi to Allah’s Prophets. These were Allah’s Messages. These messages were collected in the form of books.

THE BOOKS OF ALLAH: The Qur’an speaks of four such books. These four books are: 1)The Suhuf which given to the prophet Ibraaheem (A.S), 2) The Zaboor which was given to Prophet Daawood (A.S), 3) The Tawraah which was given to Musaa (A.S), 4) The Injeel which was given to Prophet Isaa (A.S), and 5) The Qur’an which was given to Prophet Muhammad (P.b.u.h).

THE BOOKS OF ALLAH: All these books had the same message of Tawheed, i.e. “THERE IS NO GOD BUT ALLAH” What happened to these books? Except for the Qur’an, all the other books were lost or changed by people. Today the original words of these lost books do not exist, but we still believe that Allah once sent these books. We now have the Qur’an only. It’s words are original. Allah has protected the Qur’an in its original form.

AL-MASJID: A masjid is a place in which Muslims pray five times a day. When it is time for Salah, the Mu’adh-dhin calls out the adhan from the majid. You should enter with the masjid with the right foot first, saying “Bismillaah, Allaahummaftah lee abwaaba rahmatik” (in the name of Allah. O Allah, open the gates of your mercy for me). You should take off your shoes or sandals and leave them at the entrance of the masjid.

AL-MASJID: In the prayer hall, there is a niche, called the mihraab shows the direction of the qiblah. The qiblah is the direction towards which we pary. The masjid should be kept clean. Before going to the masjid, you must make sure that your body and clothes are clean and that they do not smell bad. After salah, leave the masjid with the left foot first saying: “Bismillaah, Allaahumma innee as’aluka min fadlik”

AL-ADHAN (THE CALL TO PRAYER): The mu’adh-dhin calls out the five times a day in the mosque. Muslim then get ready to offer Salah. The adhan reminds the muslim that it is time

Page 44: Hadith & qur'an

for prayer. When you hear the adhan, you should prepare yourself for salah. You should leave aside whatever you may be doing at that time as soon as possible.

WUDHU: The prophet Muhammad (P.b.u.h) said that a person’s prayer (Salah) is not accepted if he is not pure. So, before praying a Muslim must purify himself. He should wash off the dirt, if any, from his body. A Muslim should make sure that his clothes are clean. Wudhu should be performed with pure water.

THE FIVE DAILY PRAYERS: The second pillar of Islam is Salah. A Muslim must offer five fard prayers a day. Fard is Arabic word which means compulsory. The fard prayers are compulsory prayers. No Muslim should avoid them or delay them, without a valid reason. The five daily prayers have the following rak’ahs. 1) Fajr: two rak’ahs. 2) Dhuhr: four rak’ahs. 3) Asr: four rak’ahs. 4) Maghrib: three rak’ahs. 5) Isha: four rak’ahs.

PROPHET MUHAMMAD: (P.b.u.h) Prophet Muhammad (P.b.u.h) was born in Makkah on Monday, Rabee’ al-awal, in the year of elephant. It was the year 570 according to the Christian calendar. Prophet Muhammad (P.b.u.h) was born 50 days after the event of the year of the elephant. And what is the year of the elephant? The Arabs before Islam of course had no calendar. They counted days and months but they did not number their years.

KA’BAH: Abraha built a splendid Church in San’aa, but the people did not come to his Church. They continued to visit the Ka’bah. Abraha needed no further excuse. He set out for Makkah with a large army to break the ka’bah down. At the front of the army he placed an elephant. No one in Makkah had ever seen an elephant before. Abraha was not far from Makkah when the elephant stopped and it wouldn’t move any further (Continue) …

KA’BAH: Abraha’s large army also stopped. At this point a miracle happened. The Qur’an tells us its story. Since then this year was called the year of Elephant. It was the year Allah’s messenger (P.b.u.h) was born.

Page 45: Hadith & qur'an

PROPHET MUHAMMAD: Prophet’s mother name was Aminah bint Wahab. She belonged to a noble family of a tribe Quraysh. The prophet’s father name was Abdullah and his grandfather name was Abdul-Mutatalib. They also belonged to the Quraysh tribe. He died in Madinah months before the birth of his son. Abdullah was only 25 years old when he died.

PROPHET MUHAMMAD: When his mother Aminah gave birth to him, his grandfather Abdul-Mutalib named him Muhammad. Abdul-Mutalib hoped that his grandson would be praised and respected by everyone in the world. Most of the Quraysh used to send their newborn children to the desert. This gave the children good health. It kept them away from the crowd city. This also helped them to learn the pure Arabic language.

DHIKR AND DU’AA: Dhikr is an Arabic word. If you do dhikr of someone you remember that person. You mention him to yourself or to someone. In Islam it means remembering Allah. Du’aa is also an Arabic word. When you make du’aa to someone you pray to that person to give you what you need. A Muslim only prays to Allah and asks Allah for whatever he needs. Du’aa is a way in which Muslims worship Allah. Muslims only make da’aa to Allah.

DHIKR AND DU’AA: We should make every kind of du’aa to Allah as He says: “Invoke Me and I will answer your call”. We should ask Allah alone for help. Dhikr is remembrance of Allah. Allah is our creator. We have nothing of our own. Allah has given us all we have our life and all we possess. Every gift is from Allah. We should be thankful to him for these gifts. We should love Him above all things. We worship Him alone, fear Him alone.

DHIKR: We worship him by praying to Him. But now? Allah’s messenger (P.b.u.h) said that we can do this by saying a number of statements, like the following ones: Subhaan-Allah, Al-hamdu Lillaah, Laa ilaaha Illallaah, Allaahu Akbar. If we say this from our hearts, we can get closer to Allah, no name is greater than Allah’s name.

DU’AA: Prayer: Du’aa is a great tool in the hands of a Muslim. Prayer is a Muslim’s strength. We can pray to Allah in our own language. We can pray to Allah in our own words. But it is

Page 46: Hadith & qur'an

always better to pray as our prophet (P.b.u.h) has taught us. Allah’s messenger (P.b.u.h) has taught us supplication or du’aa for every occasion.

SAY BEFORE LEAVING YOUR HOUSE: Bismilaah, Tawakkaltu ‘alallaah, wa laa hawla wa laa quwwata ilaa billaah (In the name of Allah; I place my trust in Allah, and there is neither power, nor might except with Allah.

WHEN YOU SNEEZE, SAY: Al-Hamdu lilaah (All praise is for Allah). When you hear a Muslim saying Al-Hamdu lilaah on sneezing, say: Yarhamuk-Allaah (May Allah have mercy on you).

WHEN YOU ARE ABOUT TO GO INTO TOILET, SAY: Bismillaah. Allaahumma innee a’oodhu bika minal-khubuthi wal-khabaa’ith (In the name of Allah. O Allah, I seek protection in you from the male and female devils).

WHEN YOU COMPLETE YOUR WUDHU, SAY: Ash-hadu allaa ilaaha illallaahu wahdahu laa shareeka lahu, wa ask-hadu anna muhammadan ‘abduhu wa rasooluh (I bear withness that none has the right to worshipped except Allah alone, without a partner; and I bear witness that Muhammad is his slave and messenger.

WHEN ABOUT TO BEGIN RECITING THE QUR’AN, SAY: A’oodhu billaahi minash-shaitaanir-rajeem (I seek Allah’s protection from Satan, the one expelled from his mercy.

USING RIHGT HAND: It is good manners to use the right hand for taking or accepting things, for eating & drinking, & for shaking hands. One should start from the right hand side of the body when stepping into shoes or sandals, & when putting on clothes. Similarly, one should put the right foot forward first when entering a mosque, & coming out of the toilet. As for the left hand, it should be used for dealing with things that are unclean

ETIQUETTE OF USING THE TOILET: When you need to go to the toilet, do not carry anything with you that has Allah’s name on it. Before stepping into the toilet with your left foot,

Page 48: Hadith & qur'an

say: Bismillaah. Allaahumma innee a’oodhu bika minal-khubuthi wal-khabaa’th. Keep yourself screened from the view by closing the door of the toilet. Do not talk while relieving yourself. You should not return the greeting (Salaam) of someone who greets you.

ETIQUETTE OF EATING AND DRINKING: Food and drink are great gifts from Allah. Wash your hands properly before eating. Come to the table in clean clothes. Sit straight at the table. You may keep your hands on your lap when you are not eating. Immediately before eating or drinking you should say: “Bismillaah” and after eating or drinking you should say “Al-Hamdu Lillah”

ETIQUETTE (MANNERS) OF GOING OUT: When you leave your home, say “Bismillaah, tawakkaltu ‘alallaah, wa laa hawla walaa quwwata illa billaah” (In the name of Allah; I place my trust in Allah, and there is neither power, nor might except with Allah). Then walk with ease. Do not walk too fast or too slowly. When Allah’s messenger (P.b.u.h) walked, H walked with ease. When he turned to address somebody, he turned his whole body completely.

ISSA [JESUS] (P.U.H) RAISED UP AND NOT CRUCIFIED AS PER QUR’AN: That they said (in boast): “We killed Jesus Christ, the son of Mary, the Apostle of God” but they did not kill him nor crucified him, but it was so made to appear to them. And those who differ in this are full of doubts with no (certain) knowledge but only suppositions. For surely they did not kill him. (Qur’an: 4: 157)

BIRTH OF ISSA [JESUS] (P.U.H): Behold, the angels said “O Mary! God gives you good news of a Word from Him. His name will be Jesus Christ, the son of Mary, held in honour in this world and the Hereafter and (one) of those nearest to God. “He shall speak to the people in childhood and in maturity and he shall be (one) of the righteous.” She said: “O my Lord! How shall I have a son when no man has touched me?” … (Qur’an: 3: 45-47)

MUSLIM BELIEVES IN JESUS (P.A.H): No Muslim is a Muslim if he does not believe in Jesus (pbuh). We believe that he was one of the mightiest Messengers of Allah (swt). We believe

Page 49: Hadith & qur'an

that he was born miraculously, without any male intervention, which many modern day Christians do not believe. We believe he was the Messiah translated Christ. We believe that he gave life to the dead with God’s permission.

CALLING TO PEOPLE OF THE BOOK TO ISLAM: Say: O People of the Book! come to common terms as between us and you: That we worship none but Allah. that we associate no partners with him; that we erect not, from among ourselves, Lords and patrons other than Allah." If then they turn back, say ye: "Bear witness that we (at least) are Muslims (bowing to Allah.s Will). The Holly Qur’an (Chapter 3:64)

NUH (P.U.H): Noah's mission was to a wicked world, plunged in depravity and sin. Although he preached the Message of God with immense zeal, his people refused to mend their ways, leading to his building of the Ark and the famous event of the Deluge, the Great Flood which perished all the evil people of his time. Noah is praised by God in the Qur'an. In sura 17 (Al-Isra), ayah 3, God states: Verily he was a devotee most grateful.

Ya'qub said: Then he prayed (performed) two prostrations. then takbir was pronounced for prayer and then he offered the morning prayer (in congregation). (Sahih Muslim, Book 4, Hadith # 1449)

ISLAM HAS FIVE CATEGORIES OF DO’S AND DON’TS: (i) ‘Fard’ i.e. compulsory or obligatory (ii) ‘Mustahab’ i.e. recommended or encouraged (iii) ‘Mubah’ i.e. permissible or allowed (iv) ‘Makruh’ i.e. not recommended or discouraged (v) ‘Haraam’ i.e. prohibited or forbidden

CALLING THE PEOPLE: “Invite (all) to the way of thy Lord, with wisdom and beautiful preaching, and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious!”[Al-Qur’an 16:125]

Page 75: Hadith & qur'an

MARRY ONLY ONE: “Marry women of your choice, two, or three, or four; but if ye fear thatye shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one.” [Al-Qur’an 4:3]

HIJAB FOR MEN: “Say to the believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty: that will make for greater purity for them: and Allah is well acquainted with all that they do.” [Al-Qur’an 24:30]

HIJAB FOR WOMEN: “ And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof; that they should draw veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands’ fathers, their sons...” [Al-Qur’an 24:31]SIX CRITERIA FOR HIJAB: 1. Extent: The first criterion is the extent of the body that should be covered. This is different for men and women. The extent of covering obligatory on the male is to cover the body at least from the navel to the knees. For women, the extent of covering obligatory is to cover the complete body except the face and the hands upto the wrist. If they wish to, they can cover even these parts of the body. Some scholars of Islam insist that the face and the hands are part of the obligatory extent of ‘hijab’. All the remaining five criteria are the same for men and women.2. The clothes worn should be loose and should not reveal the figure.3. The clothes worn should not be transparent such that one can see through them.4. The clothes worn should not be so glamorous as to attract the opposite sex.5. The clothes worn should not resemble that of the opposite sex.6. The clothes worn should not resemble that of the unbelievers i.e. they should not wear clothes that are specifically identities or symbols of the Unbelievers’ religions.

HIJAB PREVENTS MOLESTATION: “O Prophet! Tell thy wives and daughters, and the believing women that they should cast their outer garments over their persons (when abroad); that is most convenient, that they should be known (as such) and not molested. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” [Al-Qur’an 33:59]

OPINION OF HISTORIAN DE LACY O’LEARY: historian De Lacy O’Leary in the book “Islam at the cross road” (Page 8): “History makes it clear however, that the legend of fanatical Muslims sweeping through the world and forcing Islam at the point of the sword upon conquered races is one of the most fantastically absurd myth that historians have ever repeated.”

Page 76: Hadith & qur'an

NO COMPULSION IN RELIGION: “Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from error” [Al-Qur’an 2:256]

QUR’AN PERMITS MUSLIMS TO HAVE NON-VEGETARIAN FOOD: “O ye who believe! Fulfil (all) obligations. Lawful unto you (for food) are all four-footed animals with the exceptions named.” [Al-Qur’an 5:1] “And cattle He has created for you (men): from them Ye derive warmth, and numerous benefits, And of their (meat) ye eat.” [Al-Qur’an 16:5] “And in cattle (too) ye have an instructive example: From within their bodies We produce (milk) for you to drink; there are, in them, (besides), numerous (other) benefits for you; and of their (meat) ye eat.” [Al-Qur’an 23:21]

HINDU SCRIPTURES GIVE PERMISSION TO HAVE NON-VEGETARIAN FOOD: 1. It is mentioned in Manu Smruti, the law book of Hindus, in chapter 5 verse 30 “The eater who eats the flesh of those to be eaten does nothing bad, even if he does it day after day, for God himself created some to be eaten and some to be eater.” 2. Again next verse of Manu Smruti, that is, chapter 5 verse 31 says “Eating meat is right for the sacrifice, this is traditionally known as a rule of the gods.” 3. Further in Manu Smruti chapter 5 verse 39 and 40 says “God himself created sacrificial animals for sacrifice, ... , therefore killing in a sacrifice is not killing.” 4. Mahabharata Anushashan Parva chapter 88 narrates the discussion between Dharmaraj Yudhishthira and Pitamah Bhishma about what food one should offer to Pitris (ancestors) during the Shraddha (ceremony of dead) to keep them satisfied…

PROHIBITING EATING OF CARNIVOROUS ANIMALS: Ahadith narrated in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim including hadith narrated by Ibn Abbas in Sahih Muslim, Book of hunting and slaughter, Hadith No. 4752 and Sunan Ibn-I-Majah chapter 13 Hadith no. 3232 to 3234, the Holy Prophet (pbuh) prohibited the eating of: (i) Wild animals with canine teeth, i.e. meat eating carnivorous animals. These are animals belonging to the cat families such as lion, tiger, cats, dogs, wolfs, hyenas, etc.(ii) Certain rodents like mice, rats, rabbits with claws, etc.(iii) Certain reptiles like snakes, alligators, etc.(iv) Birds of prey with talons or claws, like vultures, eagle, crows, owl, etc.

BLACK STONE AT KAABA: Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “I know that you are a stone and can neither benefit nor harm. Had I not seen the Prophet (pbuh) touching (and kissing) you, I would never have touched (and kissed) you”. (Sahih Bukhari, Volume 2, Hadith # 675)

PORK PROHIBITED IN THE BIBLE: “Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcass shall ye not touch, they are unclean to you.” [Leviticus 11:7-8] “And the swine, because it divideth the hoof, yet cheweth not the cud, it is unclean unto you. Ye shall not eat of their flesh,

Page 77: Hadith & qur'an

nor touch their dead carcass.” [Deuteronomy 14:8] A similar prohibition is repeated in the Bible in the book of Isaiah chapter 65 verse 2-5.

PROHIBITION OF ALCOHOL IN THE QUR’AN: “O ye who believe! Intoxicants and Gambling, (dedication of) stones, and (divination by) arrows, are an Abomination – of Satan’s handiwork; eschew such (abomination), that ye may prosper.” [Al-Qur’an 5:90]

PROHIBITION OF ALCOHOL IN THE BIBLE: 1. “Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging; and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.” [Proverbs 20:1] 2. “And be not drunk with wine.” [Ephesians 5:18]

ALCOHOL IS PROHIBITED IN HADITH: The Prophet of Islam Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 1. In Sunan Ibn-I-Majah Volume 3, Book of Intoxicants, Chapter 30 Hadith No. 3371. “Alcohol is the mother of all evils and it is the most shameful of evils.”2. In Sunan Ibn-I-Majah Volume 3, Book of Intoxicants, Chapter 30 Hadith No. 3392“Anything which intoxicates in a large quantity, is prohibited even in a small quantity.”Thus there is no excuse for a nip or a tot. 3. Not only those who drink alcohol are cursed but also those who deal with them directly or indirectly are cursed by Allah. According to Sunan Ibn-I-Majah Volume 3, Book of Intoxicants, Chapter 30 Hadith No. 3380. It was reported by Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), that Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said: “God’s curse falls on ten groups of people who deal with alcohol. The one who distills it, the one for whom it has been distilled, the one who drinks it, the one who transports it, the one to who it has been brought, the one whom serves it, the one who sells it, the one who utilizes money from it, the one who buys it and the one who buys it for someone else.”

ALCOHOLISM IS A ‘DISEASE’: If alcohol is a disease, it is the only disease that: - Is sold in bottles - Is advertised in newspapers, magazines, on radio and television - Has licensed outlets to spread it - Produces revenue for the government - Brings violent deaths on the highways - Destroys family life and increases crime - Has no germs or viral cause

FEMALE WITNESSES ARE PREFERRED IN SOME CASES: Some incidents require only female witness and that of a male cannot be accepted. For instance, in dealing with the problems of women, while giving the burial bath i.e. ‘ghusl’ to a woman, the witness has to be a woman.

INHERITANCE IN THE QUR'AN: The Glorious Qur’an contains specific and detailed guidance regarding the division of the inherited wealth, among the rightful beneficiaries. The Qur’anic verses that contain guidance regarding inheritance are:* Surah Baqarah, chapter 2 verse 180* Surah Baqarah, chapter 2 verse 240* Surah Nisa, chapter 4 verse 7-9

Page 78: Hadith & qur'an

* Surah Nisa, chapter 4 verse 19* Surah Nisa, chapter 4 verse 33 and* Surah Maidah, chapter 5 verse 106-108

GOD IS MOST POWERFUL AND JUST: “Allah is never unjust in the least degree” [Al-Qur’an 4:40]

THIS LIFE IS A TEST FOR THE HEREAFTER: “He who created Deathand life that He may try which of you is best in deed; and He is the Exalted in Might, Oft-Forgiving” [Al-Qur’an 67:2]

FINAL JUSTICE ON DAY OF JUDGEMENT: “Every soul shall have a taste of death: and only on the Day of Judgement shall you be paid your full recompense. Only he who is saved far from the Fire and admitted to the Garden will have attained the object (of life): for the life of this world is but goods and chattels of deception.” [Al-Qur’an 3:185]

ALLAH CAN BURN MORE THAN BILLION TIMES IN HELLFIRE: “Those who reject Our signs, We shall sooncast into the Fire;as often as their skins are roasted through, We shall change them for fresh skins, that they may taste the penalty: for Allah is Exalted in Power, Wise”[Al-Qur’an 4:56]

MUSLIMS SHOULD BE UNITED: “And hold fast, all together, by the rope which Allah (stretches out for you), and be not divided among yourselves;” [Al-Qur’an 3:103]

PROHIBITED TO MAKE SECTS AND DIVISIONS IN ISLAM: “As for those who divide Their religion and break up into sects, thou hast no part in them in the least: Their affair is with Allah: He will in the end tell them the truth of all that they did.” [Al-Qur’an 6:159]

DIVISION NOT ALLOWED IN ISLAM: the prophet (pbuh) is reported to have said, “My Umma will be fragmented into seventy-three sects, and all of them will be in Hell fire except one sect.” The companions asked Allah’s messenger which group that would be. Where upon he replied, “It is the one to which I and my companions belong.” (Tirmidhi Hadith No. 171)

ISLAM PRESCRIBES ZAKAT: Islam prescribes a system of Zakat (obligatory annual charity). Islamic law prescribes that every person who has a saving that exceeds the nisab leveli.e. more than 85 grams of gold, should give 2.5% of that saving every lunar year in charity. If every rich person in the world gave Zakat sincerely, poverty will be eradicated from this world. Not a single human being would die of hunger.

Page 79: Hadith & qur'an

CHOPPING OFF THE HANDS AS PUNISHMENT FOR ROBBERY: Islam prescribes chopping off the hands of the convicted robber. The Glorious Qur’an says in Surah Maidah:“As to the thief, male or female, cut off his or her hands: a punishment by way of example, from Allah, for their crime: and Allah is Exalted in power, full of wisdom.” [Al-Qur’an 5:38]

JUDGE ISLAM BY ITS BEST FOLLOWER I.E. PROPHET MOHAMMED (PBUH):If you practically want to check how good a car is put an expert driver behind the steering wheel. Similarly the best and the most exemplary follower of Islam by whom you can check how good Islam is, is the last and final messenger of God, Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). Besides Muslims, there are several honest and unbiased non-Muslim historians who have acclaimed that prophet Muhammad was the best human being. According to Michael H. Hart who wrote the book, ‘The Hundred Most Influential Men in History’, the topmost position, i.e. the number one position goes to the beloved prophet of Islam, Muhammad (pbuh). There are several such examples of non-Muslims paying great tributes to the prophet, like Thomas Carlyle, La-Martine, etc.

ISLAM IN THE UNITED STATES: It is difficult to generalize about American Muslims. They are converts, immigrants, factory workers, and doctors. This varied community is unified by a common faith, underpinned by a nationwide network of a large number of mosques. Muslims arrived early in North America. By the eighteenth century, there were many Muslims in North America. Great numbers of Americans have entered the fold of Islam. They are from different classes: the rich, the poor, the educated, and the illiterate. Today, there are about five and a half million Muslims in the United States. (Reference: The World Almanac and Book of Facts 1996, Famighetti, p. 644.)

THE PILGRIMAGE TO MAKKAH: The annual pilgrimage (Hajj) to Makkah is an obligation once in a lifetime for those who are physically and financially able to perform it. About two million people go to Makkah each year from every corner of the globe. Although Makkah is always filled with visitors, the annual Hajj is performed in the twelfth month of the Islamic calendar. Male pilgrims wear special simple clothes which strip away distinctions of class and culture so that all stand equal before God. The rites of the Hajj include circling the Kaaba seven times and going seven times between the hillocks of Safa and Marwa, as Hagar did during her search for water. Then the pilgrims standtogether in Arafa1 and ask God for what they wish and for His forgiveness, in what is often thought of as a preview of the Day of Judgment. The end of the Hajj is marked by a festival, Eid Al-Adha, which is celebrated with prayers. This, and Eid al-Fitr, a feast-day commemorating the end of Ramadan, are the two annual festivals of the Muslim calendar. (Please visit www.islam-guide.com/pillars for more information on the Five Pillars of Islam.)

FASTING THE MONTH OF RAMADAN: Every year in the month of Ramadan,1 Muslims fast from dawn until sundown, abstaining from food, drink, and sexual relations. Although the

Page 80: Hadith & qur'an

fast is beneficial to health, it is regarded principally as a method of spiritual self-purification. By cutting oneself off from worldly comforts, even for a short time, a fasting person gains true sympathy with those who go hungry, as well as growth in his or her spiritual life.

GIVING ZAKAT (SUPPORT OF THE NEEDY): All things belong to God, and wealth is therefore held by human beings in trust. The original meaning of the word zakat is both ‘purification’ and growth.’ Giving zakat means ‘giving a specified percentage on certain properties to certain classes of needy people.’ The percentage which is due on gold, silver, and cash funds that have reached the amount of about 85 grams of gold and held in possession for one lunar year is two and a half percent. Our possessions are purified by setting aside a small portion for those in need, and, like the pruning of plants, this cutting back balances and encourages new growth. A person may also give as much as he or she pleases as voluntary alms or charity.

PRAYER: Muslims perform five prayers a day. Each prayer does not take more than a few minutes to perform. Prayer in Islamis a direct link between the worshipper and God. There are no intermediaries between God and the worshipper. In prayer, a person feels inner happiness, peace, and comfort, and that God is pleased with him or her. The Prophet Muhammad said: { Bilal, call (the people) to prayer, let us be comforted by it. } (Narrated in Abu-Dawood, #4985) Bilal was one of Muhammad’s _companions who was charged to call the people to prayers. Prayers are performed at dawn, noon, mid-afternoon, sunset, and night. A Muslim may pray almost anywhere, such as in fields, offices, factories, or universities.

THE TESTIMONY OF FAITH: The testimony of faith is saying with conviction, “La ilaha illa Allah, Muhammadur rasoolu Allah.” This saying means “There is no true god but God (Allah),1 and Muhammad is the Messenger (Prophet) of God.” The first part, “There is no true god but God,” means that none has the right to be worshipped but God alone, and that God has neither partner nor son. This testimony of faith is called the Shahada, a simple formula which should be said with conviction in order to convert to Islam (as explained above on pages 52-53). The testimony of faith is the most important pillar of Islam.

THE MOST WORTHY OF MY GOOD COMPANIONSHIP? A man came to the Prophet Muhammad (P.b.u.h) and said: “O Messenger of God! Who among the people is the most worthy of my good companionship?” The Prophet said: {your mother.} The man said: “Then who?” The Prophet said: {Then your mother. } The man further asked: “Then who?” The Prophet said: {Then your mother. } The man asked again: “Then who?” The Prophet said: {then your father.} (Narrated in Saheeh Muslim, #2548, and Saheeh Al-Bukhari, #5971)

STATUS OF WOMEN IN ISLAM: Islam sees a woman, whether single or married, as an individual in her own right, with the right to own and dispose of her property and earnings without any guardianship over her (whether that be her father, husband, or anyone else). She has the right to buy and sell, give gifts and charity, and may spend her money as she pleases. A

Page 81: Hadith & qur'an

marriage dowry is given by the groom to the bride for her own personal use, and she keeps her own family name rather than taking her husband’s. Islam encourages the husband to treat his wife well, as the Prophet Muhammad (P.b.u.h) said: {The best among you are those who are best to their wives.} (Narrated in Ibn Majah, #1978, and Al-Tirmizi, #3895)

ISLAM PROTECTS HONOR: The Prophet Muhammad (P.b.u.h) said: {truly your blood, your property, and your honor are inviolable.} (Narrated in Saheeh Al-Bukhari, #1739, and Mosnad Ahmad, #2037)

HUMAN BEINGS ARE EQUALS: The Prophet Muhammad (P.b.u.h) said: {O people! Your God is one and your forefather (Adam) is one. An Arab is not better than a non-Arab and a non-Arab is not better than an Arab, and a red (i.e. white tinged with red) person is not better than a black person and a black person is not better than a red person, except in piety. (Narrated in Mosnad Ahmad, # 22978)HUSBAND TO TREAT HIS WIFE WELL: the Prophet Muhammad (P.b.u.h) said: {The best among you are those who are best to their wives.} (Narrated in Ibn Majah, #1978, and Al-Tirmizi, #3895.)

INJUSTICE: The Prophet Muhammad (P.b.u.h) said: {People, beware of injustice, for injustice shall be darkness on the Day of Judgment.} (Narrated in Mosnad Ahmad, #5798, and Saheeh Al-Bukhari, #2447.)

THE TRUE JUDGMENT: the Prophet (P.b.u.h) said: { On the Day of Judgment, rights will be given to those to whom they are due (and wrongs will be redressed)... } (Narrated in Saheeh Muslim, # 2582, and Mosnad Ahmad, # 7163.)

GOD LOVES JUST DEALERS: God does not forbid you from showing kindness and dealing justly with those who have not fought you about religion and have not driven you out of your homes. God loves just dealers. (Qur’an, 60:8)

WHAT IS THE QUR’AN ABOUT? The Qur’an, the last revealed word of God, is the primary source of every Muslim’s faith and practice. It deals with all the subjects which concern human beings: wisdom, doctrine, worship, transactions, law, etc., but its basic theme is the relationship between God and His creatures. At the same time, it provides guidelines and detailed teachings for a just society, proper human conduct, and an equitable economic system. Note that the Qur’an was revealed to Muhammad (P.b.u.h) in Arabic only. So, any Qur’anic translation, either in English or any other language, is neither a Qur’an, nor a version of the Qur’an, but rather it is only a translation of the meaning of the Qur’an. The Qur’an exists only in the Arabic in which it was revealed.

Page 82: Hadith & qur'an

HOW DOES SOMEONE BECOME A MUSLIM? Simply by saying with conviction, “La ilaha illa Allah, Muhammadur rasoolu Allah,” one converts to Islam and becomes a Muslim. This saying means “There is no true god but God (Allah), and Muhammad is the Messenger (Prophet) of God.” The first part, “There is no true god but God,” means that none has the right to be worshipped but God alone, and that God has neither partner nor son. To be a Muslim, one should also:

1. Believe that the Holy Qur’an is the literal word of God, revealed by Him.2. Believe that the Day of Judgment (the Day of Resurrection) is true and will come, as

God promised in the Qur’an.3. Accept Islam as his or her religion.4. Not worship anything nor anyone except God.

THE UNBELIEVERS ON THE DAY OF JUDGMENT: He (God) will say: “How many years did you stay on the earth?” They will say: “We stayed a day or part of a day....” (Qur’an,23:112-113)

WE HAD CREATED YOU IN JEST WITHOUT ANY PURPOSE? Did you then think that We had created you in jest (without any purpose), and that you would not be returned to Us (in the Hereafter)? So, God is exalted, the True King. None has the right to be worshipped but Him... (Qur’an, 23:115-116)

THE VALUE OF THIS WORLD: Muhammad (P.b.u.h) said: { The value of this world compared to that of the Hereafter is like what your finger brings from the sea when you put it in and then take it out. (Narrated in Saheeh Muslim, # 2858, and Mosnad Ahmad, # 17560)

RELIGION ACCEPTED ON THE DAY OF JUDGEMENT? And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will not be accepted from him and he will be one of the losers in the Hereafter. (Qur’an, 3:85)

DIED IN DISBELIEF: Those who have disbelieved and died in disbelief, the earth full of gold would not be accepted from any of them if it were offered as a ransom. They will have a painful punishment, and they will have no helpers. (Qur’an, 3:91)

DWELLERS OF PARADISE: And those who believe and do good deeds, they are dwellers of Paradise, they dwell therein forever. (Qur’an, 2:82)

Page 83: Hadith & qur'an

GOOD TO HIS NEIGHBOR: Whoever believes in God and the Last Day (the Day of Judgment) should do good to his neighbor. (Narrated in Saheeh Muslim, # 48, and Saheeh Al-Bukhari, # 6019.)

GOD LOOKS AT YOUR HEART: God does not judge you according to your appearance and your wealth, but He looks at your hearts and looks into your deeds. (Narrated in Saheeh Muslim, # 2564.)

PAY THE WORKER HIS WAGE: Pay the worker his wage before his sweat dries. (Narrated in Ibn Majah, # 2443.)

REWARD FOR KINDNESS: A man walking along a path felt very thirsty. Reaching a well, he descended into it, drank his fill, and came up. Then he saw a dog with its tongue hanging out, trying to lick up mud to quench its thirst. The man said: “This dog is feeling the same thirst that I felt.” So he went down into the well again, filled his shoe with water, and gave the dog a drink. So, God thanked him and forgave his sins. } The Prophet (P.b.u.h) was asked: “Messenger of God, are we rewarded for kindness towards animals?” He said: {There is a reward for kindness to every living animal or human. (Narrated in Saheeh Muslim, # 2244, and Saheeh Al-Bukhari, # 2466)

THE BELIEVERS ONE ANOTHER ARE LIKE A BODY: The believers, in their love, mercy, and kindness to one another are like a body: if any part of it is ill, the whole body shares its sleeplessness and fever. (Narrated in Saheeh Muslim, # 2586, and Saheeh Al-Bukhari, # 6011)

BEST TO THEIR WIVES: The most perfect of the believers in faith are the best of them in morals. And the best among them are those who are best to their wives. (Narrated in Mosnad Ahmad, # 7354, and Al-Tirmizi, # 1162.)

LOVES FOR HIS BROTHER WHAT HE LOVES FOR HIMSELF : None of you believes (completely) until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself. (Narrated in Saheeh Al-Bukhari, # 13, and Saheeh Muslim, # 45.)

THE MERCIFUL: The merciful are shown mercy by the All-Merciful. Show mercy to those on earth, and God will show mercy to you. (Narrated in Al-Tirmizi, # 1924, and Abu-Dawood, #4941.)

Page 84: Hadith & qur'an

SMILING: Smiling at your brother is charity... (Narrated in Al-Tirmizi, # 1956.)

A GOOD WORD: A good word is charity. (Narrated in Saheeh Muslim, # 1009, and Saheeh Al-Bukhari, # 2989.)

IS THERE ANY SACRED SOURCE OTHER THAN THE QUR’AN? Yes. The sunnah (what the Prophet Muhammad (P.b.u.h) said, did, or approved of) is the second source in Islam. The sunnah is comprised of hadeeths, which are reliably transmitted reports by the Prophet Muhammad’s (P.b.u.h) companions of what he said, did, or approved of. Belief in the sunnah is a basic Islamic belief.

BELIEF IN AL-QADAR: Muslims believe in Al-Qadar, which is Divine Predestination, but this belief in Divine Predestination does not mean that human beings do not have freewill. Rather, Muslims believe that God has given human beings freewill. This means that they can choose right or wrong and that they are responsible for their choices. The belief in Divine Predestination includes belief in four things: 1) God knows everything. He knows what has happened and what will happen. 2) God has recorded all that has happened and all that will happen. 3) Whatever God wills to happen happens, and whatever He wills not to happen does not happen.4) God is the Creator of everything.

BELIEF IN THE DAY OF JUDGMENT: Muslims believe in the Day of Judgment (the Day of Resurrection) when all people will be resurrected for God’s judgment according to their beliefs and deeds.

BELIEF IN THE PROPHETS AND MESSENGERS OF GOD: Muslims believe in the prophets and messengers of God, starting with Adam, including Noah, Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, and Jesus (peace be upon them). But God’s final message to man, a reconfirmation of the eternal message, was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (P.b.u.h). Muslims believe that Muhammad (P.b.u.h) is the last prophet sent by God, as God has said: Muhammad is not the father of any one of your men, but he is the Messenger of God and the last of the prophets... (Qur’an, 33:40) Muslims believe that all the prophets and messengers were created human beings who had none of the divine qualities of God.

BELIEF IN GOD’S REVEALED BOOKS: Muslims believe that God revealed books to His messengers as proof for mankind and as guidance for them. Among these books is the Qur’an, which God revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (P.b.u.h). God has guaranteed the Qur’an’s

Page 85: Hadith & qur'an

protection from any corruption or distortion. God has said: Indeed,We have sent down the Qur’an, and surely We will guard it (from corruption). (Qur’an, 15:9)

BELIEF IN THE ANGELS: Muslims believe in the existence of the angels and that they are honored creatures. The angels worship God alone, obey Him, and act only by His command. Among the angels is Gabriel, who brought down the Qur’an to Muhammad

GOD IS NOT A TRINITY: Indeed, they disbelieve who say: “God is the third of three (in a trinity),” when there is no god but one God. If they desist not from what they say, truly, a painful punishment will befall the disbelievers among them. Would they not rather repent to God and ask His forgiveness? For God is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. The Messiah (Jesus), son of Mary, was no more than a messenger... (Qur’an,5:73-75)

GOD IS NOT JESUS, AND JESUS IS NOT GOD: Indeed, they have disbelieved who havesaid: “God is the Messiah (Jesus), son of Mary.” The Messiah said: “Children of Israel, worship God, my Lord and your Lord. Whoever associates partners in worship with God, then God has forbidden Paradise for him, and his home is the Fire (Hell). For the wrongdoers,1 there will be no helpers.” (Qur’an, 5:72)

BELIEF IN GOD: Muslims believe in one, unique, incomparable God, Who has no son nor partner, and that none has the right to be worshipped but Him alone. He is the true God, and every other deity is false. He has the most magnificent names and sublime perfect attributes. No one shares His divinity, nor His attributes. In the Qur’an, God describes Himself: Say: “He is God, the One. God, to Whom the creatures turn for their needs. He begets not, nor was He begotten, and there is none like Him.” (Qur’an, 112:1-4) No one has the right to be invoked, supplicated, prayed to, or shown any act of worship, but God alone. God alone is the Almighty, the Creator, the Sovereign, and the Sustainer of everything in the whole universe. He manages all affairs. He stands in need of none of His creatures, and all His creatures depend on Him for all that they need. He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing, and the All-Knowing. In a perfect manner, His knowledge encompasses all things, the open and the secret, and the public and the private. He knows what has happened, what will happen, and how it will happen. No affair occurs in the whole world except by His will. Whatever He wills is, and whatever He does not will is not and will never be. His will is above the will of all the creatures. He has power over all things, and He is able to do everything. He is the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, and the Most Beneficent. In one of the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad (P.b.u.h), we are told that God is more merciful to His creatures than a mother to her child.1 God is far removed from injustice and tyranny. He is All-Wise in all of His actions and decrees. If someone wants something from God, he or she can ask God directly without asking anyone else to intercede with God for him or her.

Page 86: Hadith & qur'an

FORGIVENESS FOR ALL PREVIOUS SINS: A man called Amr came to the Prophet Muhammad (P.b.u.h) and said: “Give me your right hand so that I may give you my pledge of loyalty.” The Prophet stretched out his right hand. Amr withdrew his hand. The Prophet (P.b.u.h) said: { What has happened to you, O Amr? } He replied: “I intend to lay down a condition.” The Prophet (P.b.u.h) asked: { What condition do you intend to put forward? } Amr said: “That God forgive my sins.” The Prophet (P.b.u.h) said: { Didn’t you know that converting to Islam erases all previous sins? (Narrated in Saheeh Muslim, #121, and Mosnad Ahmad, # 17357)

INTENDS TO DO A GOOD DEED: The Prophet Muhammad (P.b.u.h): { Your Lord, Who is blessed and exalted, is most merciful. If someone intends to do a good deed but does not do it, a good deed will be recorded for him. And if he does do it, (a reward of) ten to seven hundred or many more times (the reward of the good deed), will be recorded for him. And if someone intends to do a bad deed but does not do it, a good deed will be recorded for him. And if he does do it, a bad deed will be recorded against him or God will wipe it out. (Narrated in Mosnad Ahmad, # 2515, and Saheeh Muslim, # 131.)

RAISE HIM UP BLIND ON THE DAY OF JUDGMENT: But whoever turns away from the Qur’an, he will have a hard life, and We will raise him up blind on the Day of Judgment. (Qur’an, 20:124)

HAPPIEST MAN: The Prophet Muhammad (P.b.u.h) said: { The happiest man in the world of those doomed to the Fire (Hell) on the Day of Judgment will be dipped in the Fire once. Then he will be asked: “Son of Adam, did you ever see any good? Did you ever experience any blessing?” So he will say: “No, by God, O Lord!” (Narrated in Saheeh Muslim, # 2807, and Mosnad Ahmad, # 12699)

WHEN THEY ARE SET BEFORE THE FIRE: If you could but see when they are set before the Fire (Hell) and say: “Would that we might return (to the world)! Then we would not reject the verses of our Lord, but we would be of the believers!” (Qur’an, 6:27)

DID YOU EVER EXPERIENCE ANY HARDSHIP? The most miserable man in the world of those meant for Paradise will be dipped once in Paradise. Then he will be asked: “Son of Adam, did you ever face any misery? Did you ever experience any hardship?” So he will say: “No, by God, O Lord! I never faced any misery, and I never experienced any hardship.” (Narrated in Saheeh Muslim, # 2807, and Mosnad Ahmad, # 12699.)

LOWEST IN RANK AMONG THE DWELLERS OF PARADISE: The Prophet Muhammad (P.b.u.h) told us that the lowest in rank among the dwellers of Paradise will have ten times the like of this world (Narrated in Saheeh Muslim, # 186, and Saheeh Al-Bukhari, # 6571)

Page 87: Hadith & qur'an

A SPACE IN PARADISE: A space in Paradise equivalent to the size of a foot would be better than the world and what is in it. (Narrated in Saheeh Al-Bukhari, #6568, and Mosnad Ahmad, #13368.)

PARADISE CAN’T IMAGINABLE: In Paradise there are things which no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human mind has thought of. (Narrated in Saheeh Muslim, # 2825, and Mosnad Ahmad, # 8609.)

Page 88: Hadith & qur'an

MUHAMMAD (P.B.U.H) COMPANIONS THEY DID NOT STAND UP FOR HIM: Muhammad’s (P.b.u.h) followers loved him, respected him, and trusted him to an amazing extent. Yet he continued to emphasize that deification should be directed to God and not to him personally. Anas, one of Muhammad’s (P.b.u.h)companions, said that there was no person whom they loved more than Muhammad (P.b.u.h), yet when he came to them, they did not stand up for him because he hated their standing up for him. (Narrated in Mosnad Ahmad, # 12117, and Al-Tirmizi, # 2754.)

TWO MONTHS WITHOUT LIGHTING A FIRE TO COOK A MEAL IN THE PROPHET’S (P.B.U.H) HOUSE: Aa’isha, Muhammad’s (P.b.u.h) wife, said: “O my nephew, we would sight three new moons in two months without lighting a fire (to cook a meal) in the Prophet’s (P.b.u.h) houses.” Her nephew asked: “O Aunt, what sustained you?” She said: “The two black things, dates and water, but the Prophet (P.b.u.h)had some Ansar neighbors who had milk-giving she-camels and they used to send the Prophet (P.b.u.h) some of its milk.” (Narrated in Saheeh Muslim, # 2972, and Saheeh Al-Bukhari, # 2567.)

FLOWING OF WATER THROUGH MUHAMMAD’S (P.B.U.H) FINGERS: Another miracle was the flowing of water through Muhammad’s (P.b.u.h) fingers when his companions got thirsty and had no water except a little in a vessel. They came to him and told him that they had no water to make ablution nor to drink except for what was in the vessel. So, Muhammad (P.b.u.h) put his hand in the vessel, and the water started gushing out between his fingers. So, they drank and made ablution. They were one thousand five hundred companions. (Narrated in Saheeh Al-Bukhari, # 3576, and Saheeh Muslim, # 1856.)

PROPHET MUHAMMAD (P.b.u.h) PROPHECY IN HOLY BIBLE: “If anyone does not listen to my words that the prophet speaks in my name, I myself will call him to account.” (Deuteronomy, 18:19)

GOD DOES NOT FORGET: God can forget if He wants to. But God does not forget anything because forgetting is an ungodly act, which reeks of human limitation and failing. The Qur’an says "…my Lord never errs, nor forgets”. (Al Qur’an: 20: 52)
